POINTS TO PONDER

From the Field

Buckle up, I think the cattle business could get very exciting. Traveling across the prairie provinces this winter showed the feed situation was a lot better than anticipated. In July, there was a full-on drought through a big portion of the western provinces. Some rains in August did provide some regrowth in many areas, and an open fall allowed many producers to graze cattle well into November, when they anticipated starting to feed months earlier. We still need to have a lot of snow, or heavy spring rains, to get some runoff to fill dugouts and sloughs, as too many producers had to haul water, or will have to next year if there isn’t some significant moisture. There were some higher percentages of cattle culled in many operations, but not the wholesale dumping that some were predicting in early summer. Yes, the cow numbers in North America are down and the years ahead will see a significantly smaller number of calves available to feed. Since early December, when the feedlots in the USA finally became current, the price Jack & Gloria H (204)-843-2246 C (204)-791-0091

of fat cattle has moved higher. The packers are still making historical profits for this time of year, but at least the pendulum is moving to the feeders, who need a break after the last 24 months. The higher fat prices have also strengthened the calf market here in January, as the late spring and summer futures for fats look very strong. If we can get a decent growing season and see the feed grain prices come down a bit, the calf market this fall should be excellent. When that happens, we have heifer retention, which takes more calves out of the system, which pushes prices higher yet. The demand for beef, both domestically and internationally, has been exceptional considering the historical, record high prices being demanded in the supermarkets. Visiting around the world, Australian cattle producers are experiencing extreme, historically high cattle prices, as they just went through the scenario I am talking about here in North America. They came out of a drought with cow numbers down and the calf market increased, causing heifer retention, etc., etc. I hope you enjoy the producer

profile in this issue about cattle farming in Northern Ontario. It is interesting and that area has an almost pioneering feel to it, as more of the land is developed to be productive the further north you go. You will also see the excellent set of Charolais bulls available in the early sales, and can find the bulls you require to fit your program and add to your bottom line. Now, I am off to do some more picturing and touring bull pens for the spring sales. As we get into the bull sales, if Jon Wright, Robbie Chomik, or I can be of any assistance, please don’t hesitate to give us a call. We are always happy to help in any way we can. DES POINTS À RÉFLÉCHIR

Dans nos champs Helge By

Investing In The Commercial Industry

Charolais cattle are well positioned to serve the needs of the commercial beef industry. Every spring, thousands of registered bulls are sold by members of the Canadian Charolais Association into the commercial industry where they add performance and profit to commercial cow herds. Often we hear opinions about the “purebred” industry and their lack of connection to the commercial industry, however the Charolais breed and breeders have invested significant resources into developing tools and cattle that continue to provide value to the commercial industry. A few examples follow: Data collection and evaluation – Charolais breeders consistently report data on their animals. This includes traits that matter to commercial customers including birth weight, calving ease and growth. As well, many cattle are also scanned using ultrasound to determine differences in carcass merit. Currently the CCA

Sean McGrath

has a database of member contributed data that exceeds 1 million animals and contains performance data on hundreds of thousands of animals. More importantly, this huge investment in data collection is followed up by an investment in science and analysis of the data. A good example of this investment serving the commercial industry is the genetic trend in calving ease and birthweight. By investing in science and tools to evaluate data, Charolais breeders have provided cattle with reduced labour requirements and more live calves. More importantly, over that same time investments in genetic evaluation tools have maintained or increased weaning and post-weaning growth genetics. It is very commercial industry relevant to have more live calves that grow faster. Another exciting and fairly recent investment by the Charolais breed is working with DNA technologies. This has several implications for the commercial industry but a few of them include:

FROM THE CANADIAN CHAROLAIS ASSOCIATION, CONTINUED FROM PAGE 16 Increased pedigree accuracy – this is extremely valuable as it improves the integrity of the Charolais herdbook which means that the product purchased by the commercial industry is more accurately evaluated and described. Increased genetic evaluation accuracy – the scientific investment by the Charolais breed in genomics has resulted in higher accuracy EPD. This is a huge advancement to the commercial industry for a couple of reasons. First is that the more accurately we can evaluate an animal’s genetic merit, the faster breeders can make genetic progress. The faster breeders make progress, the faster better bulls are available to the commercial industry. Secondly, improved accuracy of evaluation greatly reduces the risk associated with using a bull. For example, we can look at a yearling bull at a sale and check his birth weight in the catalogue. Judging from his phenotype and birthweight, we may decide to use the bull on young cows or heifers. Now imagine if instead of just this limited information you had

Figure 2. Canadian Charolais genetic trends for Weaning Weight (WW) and Yearling Weight (YW) since 2007 information that was the equivalent of having already bred and calved out 10 heifers to the bull. This is an example of the power of the genomic investment made by the Charolais Association and it’s members. Charolais breeders have always been involved in the industry and have a long history of being commercially focused. Investments in data collection and evaluation tools to

serve the industry total in the millions of dollars over the years. There is a lot of good information available on many of these investments and genetic selection tools that may benefit your operation at www. charolais.com. This spring is a good time to see if those investments can provide a return to you and your operation.

Figure 2.

PROFILE – DESROCHERS FARMS

Ranching in Northern Ontario Candace By

Jason D esrochers is a third - generation farmer, at Val Gagne, in northern Ontario. “My grandfather worked in the west at harvest time with a bunch of Irish men. That is how he learned, and in turn we learned, to speak English. He found the west dry and didn’t see a future there for himself. He went back to Quebec and purchased land in this area, not far from the Quebec border. This is where our family has been for three generations. We have only experienced a drought, where we had to start feeding early, once since I have been farming.” They have 2,500 acres of land in one chunk, with a total of 3,500 acres. Around 2,000 acres are cleared, and they crop 300 acres for cash. This year they are growing canola, but they have grown other cereals in the past. It is a very temperamental climate for crops. Sometimes they get snow in September and the growing season is short with a high risk of frost on either end. His brother, Mitch, likes cropping and owns a lot of the land, but he doesn’t want cows. They dabble in cropping, but because the risk is so high, they focus on the cattle. Mitch owned a logging business for many

years and sold it a few years ago. “This is cow country. The growing season is short, and we can expect a killing frost in September. You are more assured a success with cows than you are with cropping because of it. In the last few years, we noticed an increased number of milder days in the spring and fall, and a few more heat units in the summer. This year we got a heavy frost in late May, it was down to minus seven. Everybody was seeding early, and a lot of crops had to be reseeded.” There is very little rock in the area. You can work a 100-acre field and if you hit one rock, it is a rare occasion. The soil is clay loam and black earth. You won’t hit bedrock for 80 feet. The 230-240 head cowherd is mainly Charcross tans (Charolais, Simmental, Limousin). Their aim is to get tan calves and they have been experimenting with a light red factor Charolais. They colour sort the females so they can mate for the desired colour of calves. “All our red cows get bred to Charolais bulls and our white cows get bred red Simmental. The tan cows are bred to red factor or white Charolais bulls.”

“We are trying to get rid of all the horns in our herd. It is just so much easier when you are working cattle through the chutes. We have been purchasing only polled or homozygous polled bulls. Last year, I think we only had nine calves with horns.” “Most of our bulls are over 100 to 105 pounds at birth. We don’t want little sixty-pound calves. We don’t worry about calving ease, as our cows can handle it. We only have calving problems if there is a malpresentation.” “We keep a few purebred Simmental cows and try to raise a few bulls for our own use. There are quite a few Charolais breeders around and finding good bulls isn’t a problem, but there aren’t a lot of Simmental cattle around here. We hope to raise enough for ourselves and maybe sell some.” “The cows graze out in the open until there is a killer frost, usually in September, although in 2021, it wasn’t until late October. Then they will move into the bush where the land is a bit swampy and they will graze there for a month, or a month and a half. Usually, we don’t start feeding until mid-October, but in 2021, it was

two weeks later.. They would probably gain better if we started earlier, but the goal is not gain, the goal is profit. The result has to be the bottom line and we have to be that way, as we have had very few subsidies for three generations.” They have not reseeded pasture for 60 years. You would get a better yield, but it isn’t absolutely necessary. “On hay land, we plough and reseed about every seven years. On pasture, the nutrients go back in the soil from the cows. Whereas on hay, you are taking everything off.” “We usually get one big cut of hay. On some of the more recently seeded hay, we get two cuts. We go for quantity more than quality. We keep the finer cuts for the calves, but the cows do just fine with the one cut. We have about 2,800 bales of dry hay and 1,200 of silage.” Since they had problems with alfalfa winter killing in their area, they use a lot of red clover. They have not experienced any bloating issues with the clover silage. The mix is only 1/3 red clover with grass and trefoil, but the red clover seems to dominate the rest. All their land

“Most of our bulls are over 100 to 105 pounds at birth. We don’t want little sixty-pound calves.”

is deeded, except for the hay land they rent. “We try to carry some feed over, this year we have a hundred bales left. We try to maximize the feed we have, so if we have feed left, we carry more replacements. I don’t like to sell feed; I just like to use it.” “We used to grass our calves ourselves, but we only had one hundred cows at the time. Now with double the cows, we just don’t have the land.” “We background all our calves, but we don’t feed them any grain. They are very green when we sell them, but they are framed out well. Dollarwise, I get the same money in my pocket as some of the larger backgrounders that feed grain.” The cows are not bothered by flies in the area. There is no need for fly tags. There are a lot of wolves and bears around and they have experienced losses from them. The most they have lost in one year is nine calves. Sometimes, the wolves only get a bite and get chased off. If they catch them right away, they can successfully treat the bites. “We started a sale this spring with good quality cattle from the north. We topped the market about $.20 per pound more than anywhere else that week and the next week I believe. It was called the Northern Select Sale and it was held at the Keady market, at the end of April.” “My steers were 750-760 and brought $1,600, the heifers were around 700 and we received around $1,400. For May-June calves, they weren’t that big, but there was very little input. We have a few purebred Simmental cows that calve in January or February, it is nothing to get an 800 lb calf in September, but you can’t compare them with May-June calves. The May-June calves just start to eat grass in September when the quality 42

is already starting to drop. There is no way I am calving over 200 cows in January; it just gets too cold here.” “Snowfall is as high as 3/4 of the fenceposts. You can barely see the hay bales when we are digging through them in March, sometimes you can’t even see them. We get a lot of rain in spring and summer. There is potential for great hay and crops, with long daylight summer days but the window of opportunity to harvest is very small. When it is nice, you really have to be motoring. It is not very easy sometimes.” “There are 1.9 million acres of available farmland in the area. This area has more potential than the New Liskeard or Earlton area, but it isn’t as developed. If you go across onto the Quebec side and look at google map, you will see it is all developed, and on this side, it is all bush. The government in Quebec subsidized a lot of money to clear and develop that farmland to produce local food in the 1960s. The subsidies are slowing down there, so many of the farmers in Quebec are quitting. I think some farms are just getting larger as they continue to buy available land and expand.” “The Ontario Northern Heritage Fund was historically used for mining and forestry, but a lot of people convinced the government that investing in agriculture was a good idea. They are investing in tile drainage now, and for a short stretch, they did invest in land clearing. Many of our fields are tiled, which assists us in getting better crops.” “Probably not even 1% of the 1.9 million acres are not being utilized yet. In my area, it is slowly booming with the Mennonites that moved into the area.” “It is more efficient to tile land, than buy it. Tiled land prices are now $3,000/acre. Seven years ago, the cost was $300/acre for untiled, uncleared

land. An hour north, the land is only $1000/acre.” “The Mennonites started moving into the area about seven years ago. Well over 25,000 - 30,000 acres have been bought by Mennonites. They have done a tremendous amount of work developing the land and building structures. I have been asked many times how I feel about it. I am quite pleased because they are adding more farms. With more farms, you also attract more services. They also offer services, as one of them has a tire shop, one has a machine shop, one sells feed, one makes weeping tiles, one started manufacturing plastic culverts, one started a truss manufacturing company. If they see a demand, they work to fill it. They do a lot of concrete work. It is good, when we want to put up a grain bin, they will come to do the concrete. We never had that option before. We would have to hire guys that

worked at the mines, and it would cost three times what it was worth, because that is what those guys are used to being paid.” “The tile draining subsidy is the first we have received, which is half the material cost. I don’t like it when they call it an agricultural subsidy. The mining and logging industries have been getting subsidies for years and they don’t get any attention for it. The people see it as employing people and moving the economy along. I think we are doing the same thing. That tile is going to be there improving the land long after I am gone. It is good for the economy. The government is investing in northern Ontario. It isn’t much of a subsidy, we put in a lot of work to place the tiles. All the government is paying is $500 for every $1000 cash we spend on tiles. The money doesn’t come until a year after we have paid

the entire expense.” “It is an Ontario government project, but it is also a Northern Ontario project. The Northern Heritage Fund gets funding every year, no matter what, and they decide what to do with it.” “We do have a risk management program in Ontario, that works fairly well. It is underfunded, but it does not get Federal government support.” “Covid was really good for me because the girls got to spend a lot of time with me on the farm. They do their schoolwork in the morning, and they are pretty quick at it, then they come out and tag calves with me.” Janique is 11 and Adelina is 13. Both girls know the cows well. Jason is a welder by trade, and taught the girls to weld this summer. The girls also have a flock of sheep. Gabrielle, Jason’s wife, is a French itinerant in the public school in Iroquois Falls. Jason serves on the advisory council for his region for the Ontario Cattlemen’s Association. He has been asked to sit on the board, but with the ages of their girls, he wants to be around all he can. Maybe in the future, he will answer the call.

He attended a Beef Farmers of Ontario AGM where they asked the attendees to comment on Twitter using a specific hashtag. Jason was a speaker at the event talking about farming in Northern Ontario and the opportunities available. There was so much interest, he thought he would keep posting tweets and spread more information. “I tweet about interesting farming things, no politics and very little personal life. You put one tweet up that has 20,000 impressions and you gain followers. It has helped people recognize my name in a positive way. They are starting to recognize the type of cattle we are raising, and when we are marketing them. The increased profile has been noticeable in the marketplace. We have started promoting our new sale through Twitter and that has also been positive.” “It’s a good way to mingle with farmers when you are stuck on a tractor, or just can’t go places because of covid. I like to learn from other farmers, and this is one way I learn without actually driving in their yard. It has been very beneficial to follow knowledgeable people.”

“I tweet about interesting farming things, no politics and very little personal life.”

HERD HEALTH

Coccidiosis Practical Control & Treatment Roy Lewis DVM

Coccidiosis can be one of the most frustrating diseases to treat in young beef calves. If not caught early, death losses can be as high as 20%, and many calves will have enough intestinal damage to make them poor doers for life. Coccidiois has a long life cycle, and the oocyst (like an egg) is very resistant to the environment and disinfectants, making prevention even more complicated. Most producers implement preventative control measures and have very few problems. Even one case can spell the tip of the iceberg, so hopefully, this article may offer some other practical solutions. Many articles have been written about coccidiosis over the years. There have been improvements regarding prevention through very good coccidiostats, which can be given to the cows ahead of calving, or calves in the feedlot. Also, preventive products given to young calves will go a long ways to keep coccidiosis in check. If ever you need to treat cases, keep in mind there may be many subclinical ones. Coccidiosis is spread via the fecal oral route and undergoes a 21-28 day cycle. During this cycle, this protozoan multiplies mainly in the large intestine, causing often irreparable damage and scarring to the intestinal lining. This is why one of the first clinical signs can be a dark tarry diarrhea from bleeding into the intestine, and this blood is partially digested before it is expelled. In severe cases, straining from the irritation can even result in prolapsed rectums. For every clinical case, there are many subclinical cases affecting performance, and this reduced 56

performance may carry on for the life of the calf. Keep in mind, these clinical cases will shed thousands upon millions of these oocysts (eggs) into the environment (calving area) each day, for other calves to pick up. Being inquisitive, calves are always picking at manure, or drinking stagnant water, the two main sources of the oocysts. A confirmed diagnosis can be made by your veterinarian looking at a manure sample and doing a float to check for these oocysts. This test is the same one used to determine the worm load in your herd. In severe cases, clinical signs will show up before the life cycle is completed, so initially no oocysts are found. Treatment can involve sulfa drugs and products to smooth the gut, such as activated charcoal, or kaopectate, but check on the latest treatments available from your veterinarian. Baycox (Toltrazuril) has treatment on its label for coccidiosis. In severe cases, calves need to be on intravenous fluids. Prognosis is very guarded by this stage, for the calf to return to normal productivity or even survival. Management to prevent future cases involves manure-cleaning in-between calving seasons and spreading it on grain land, much as we recommend for other transmissible cattle diseases, such as Johne’s disease. Try to clean it early enough so the summer sun will dry and kill off additional organisms. Giving the cow-calf pairs as much room as possible at calving is of great benefit. It is recommended 2000 sq feet minimum per cow-calf pair. This is why you will rarely see this disease with producers who calve later on grass, providing lots of space per cow-calf pair. Any clinical cases should be isolated with their mothers to prevent further spread to the rest of the calves, as the oocysts are shed in high numbers (in the millions) and easily consumed. Clinical disease Charolais Connection • February 2022

is the combination of other stresses the calf is under such as concurrent diseases, like scours, pneumonia or navel infection and the number of coccidian oocysts, to which the calf is exposed. Treatment for prevention is where the cattle industry has made great advancements in recent years. Freezing does not destroy the oocysts, but it at least keeps them in suspended animation frozen in the cow patties. This at least interrupts the life cycle. A new treatment for coccidiosis is a more recent product called Baycox. It is approved for treatment of coccidiosis in cattle and contains the active ingredient Toltrazuril. Toltrazuril is also being formulated in pill form, or another oral form, and scripted by many vets across western Canada for use on newborn calves, as a preventive to cut down on shedding of both coccidiosis and cryptosporidiosis. I know numerous veterinary clinics that prescribe it. It really seems to prevent both these diseases at the same time. Talk to your herd veterinarian if you need prevention for any of these two diseases. A lot of herds keep these two things at bay, so are not treating a single case yearly. This avoids the death clinical cases and production losses that occur with both of these diseases. Always be on the alert for new advancements in the treatment of the protozoan diarrheal diseases, coccidiosis and cryptosporidiosis. Many producers remember the losses they used to incur, and now with good prevention, clinical cases and the need to treat are very rare indeed. If you have bloody diarrhea in calves, with or without straining, get them checked, as you may be able to avert a herd problem.

INDUSTRY NEWS

Canadian Cattlemen’s Association News Bob Lowe, President

The promise of a new year brings new resolutions, goals, and optimism. This year is no exception – even on the heels of very challenging times for beef producers in 2021. Since day one on the job almost two years ago, it seems adversity has been at our doorstop, but we have accomplished much to the benefit of our industry, and I still believe we can help support Canada’s post-pandemic recovery. However, we do need the proper tools to bring our proposed solutions to fruition. Collaboration continues to be the key ingredient in developing workable policy solutions that we can take to government to help mitigate the impacts of the challenges facing our sector as they arise. In 2020, I spoke a great deal about how stakeholders from across our industry and the broader agriculture sector mobilized to navigate and mitigate the impacts from the pandemic. The same holds true for 2021 – by working together, we were able to inform both the federal and provincial levels of government on the type of support needed by beef producers affected by devastating droughts and wildfires. We are also engaged in helping support the needs of beef producers in British Columbia (B.C.) dealing with flooding alongside the B.C. Cattlemen’s Association and assessing the supply chain impacts on producers and the broader industry across Canada. Now that the 44th Parliament is in session, we are starting to meet with Parliamentarians of all stripes again. In early December, it was great to be back on the Hill for in-person meetings and events to better understand the priorities of the current Government and the 66

opposition parties, as well as provide insights into how our priorities can support their goals and policies. Of course, Canada’s economic recovery and climate change are top of mind for everyone, as well as the Next Agricultural Policy Framework set to launch in 2023. The Canadian Cattlemen’s Association (CCA) is working hard to bring strong recommendations forward for consideration. As negotiations on the next Framework proceed, it is our hope that a forward-looking framework is developed with an increased funding envelope and policies designed to foster a competitive business environment, as well as tackle the impacts of climate change. Since the Federal-ProvincialTerritorial (FPT) Agriculture Ministers’ meeting in November, I’ve reflected on the discussions, outcomes, and our next steps in sharing our story and recommendations with the federal and provincial levels of government. It’s no surprise that the environment and climate change were key topics of discussion at this meeting. Conversations are now happening in agriculture policy circles on how to best weave environmental aspects into the next Framework, as well as how to improve economic resiliency and attract more investment to industry research and innovation. To help secure our recovery, growing and expanding our market access for Canadian beef remains a high priority for us. We continue to push for trade limiting restrictions to be removed on Canadian beef, whether it’s by leveling the playing field when it comes to the remaining BSE-restrictions for specified risk materials, or addressing aspects of the Comprehensive and Economic Trade Charolais Connection • February 2022

Agreement with the European Union (EU). Over the last number of years, the Canadian beef industry has increased efforts to share its stewardship story. We have the unique ability to deliver significant environmental services including carbon storage and sequestration, wildlife habitat preservation and flood resiliency. As government policies and the next Framework are developed, it is critical that policymakers recognize that agriculture, and particularly beef production, play a significant role in meeting our climate change goals. Equally important is that environmental policies resonate with cattle producers as much as they do with government and the public. We also need to ensure that our story is heard, and that we are an active partner in policy consultations to avoid unintended environmental consequences, as well as any potential impacts to the profitability and sustainability of our industry. Increasing investment into research and innovation is another pivotal policy consideration, as advancements in this area enhance our ability to be competitive, while supporting our stewardship and conservation efforts as primary producers. Having the opportunity to address the Agriculture Ministers, in November on this topic, was a great avenue to begin discussions on our research priorities, including renewing the Agri-Science Clusters and Projects programs, further encouraging industry and government applied research collaborations, and the need for predictable, long-term research funding commitments, for both basic and applied research streams, to help attract additional investments by the private sector. We also cannot forget the

importance of having sufficiently funded business risk management programs, that are as market and production neutral as possible, and delivered consistently across all jurisdictions in Canada. There are many risks beyond our control and having effective and equitable safety net programs can be the difference for

many farmers, ranchers and feeders getting through inevitable difficult times. This is particularly true for our younger producers who represent the future of Canadian agriculture. We look forward to working with our industry stakeholders and Parliamentarians, to move our priorities forward, creating a

win-win-win, for beef producers, Canada’s economy, and our environment. There are likely more tough days ahead, but with hard work and perseverance, we can make positive things happen for our industry. This work ahead won’t be easy, but anything worth fighting for never is.
