POINTS TO PONDER
From the Field
As usual, the October Banner features the results from the Canadian Charolais Youth Conference and Show, which was held in the middle of July, in Olds, Alberta. Monte Soules, the American Shorthorn Association CEO, put a Facebook post that he read in his August editorial, which I think is worth reprinting. “One of my friends asked, “Why do you pay so much money for your kids to show cattle?” Well, I have a confession to make, I don’t pay for my kids to show cattle. So, if I am not paying for them to show, what am I paying for? – I pay for those moments when my kids become so tired, they want to quit but don’t. – I pay for those days when my kids come home from school and are “too tired” to go to the barn but go anyway. – I pay for my kids to learn to be disciplined. – I pay for my kids to learn to take care of their body. – I pay for my kids to learn to deal with disappointment, when they don’t win what they’d hoped for, but still have to work hard in the grading. – I pay for my kids to learn that it takes hours and hours and hours and hours of hard work and practice to create a champion, and that success does not happen overnight. – I pay for the opportunity my kids have and will have to make life-long friendships. – I pay so that my kids can be in the ring instead of in front of a screen..…I could go on, but to be short, I don’t pay for
show cattle, I pay for the opportunities that showing cattle provides my kids, to develop attributes that will serve them well throughout their lives and give them the opportunity to bless the lives of others. From what I have seen so far, there is no greater investment out there.”

There is a great cost-effective opportunity to promote your operation to Charolais breeders across Canada and around the world, and to showcase the quality of cattle that we have in Canada. Check out the Charolais-Charbray International Virtual Show at www. charolaisinternational.com. This event was initiated to promote the marketing of Charolais genetics around the world with the cancelling of the World Congress in 2020 and the World Technical Conference in 2021. Included with your entry, you can place a page advertisement in the virtual show book, at no additional charge. There will be People’s Choice judging of the cattle from around the world, so even if you are not submitting entries, you can view and participate. There are three divisions to the show: Purebred, Full French and Charbray. From August 31st to September 2nd, the Canadian Beef Industry Conference was held online. This event has moved across the country, in previous years, and was to be in British Columbia in 2020 and this summer before Covid. Again, they

had some excellent speakers making it very interesting. The thing I liked about the virtual event was being able to view the sessions you wanted while driving, in the field, in the office, or wherever, and you didn’t have the expense of time and money to attend in person. The downside, of course, is that you didn’t get the networking and visiting with fellow producers and industry people that you would by attending in person. The other thing I liked about the online event was that all the speakers were recorded, and they were available to all who registered for the conference until the end of September to review. I did re-listen to some and listen to some I had missed while I was making some miles. The next conference is hopefully going in person, August 16th to 18th, in Penticton, BC. If you have never attended, it is a very educational event. If you want to start a Charolais herd, expand your existing operation, or buy a heifer for your kids to show with some top-quality females, there are a number on offer this fall. Check out the offerings from one end of the country, to the other. Many breeders are showcasing their operations with cattle from the top of the programs. You will never go wrong buying quality cattle to improve your herd. Also, in this issue is the calendar of events for all the spring bull sales. If yours is missing, or incorrect, please let us know so we can have them correct in the Charolais calendar, if you have requested it to be there. If you haven’t been contacted by a youth member, to be a part of the calendar, which is a fundraiser for the Youth Association, again, please contact us. If Jon Wright, Robbie Chomik, or I can be of any assistance aiding in your sale participation this fall, please don’t hesitate to give us a call. Until next time, Helge

Far too often we get calls in the office with problems to register calves. 9 out of 10 problems are because the sire, or dam, do not have the DNA required. That is where breeder responsibility comes into play. All DNA requirements are on our website and have not changed in a few years. The staff at the CCA are very knowledgeable, on the regulations and requirements, and are here to help. If you are importing, or thinking about importing semen or embryos, and are not 100% sure what is required, please reach out to the office and we will be happy to help. Be proactive on these requirements. When you introduce a new walking bull into your program, we suggest that you do the DNA testing before you turn him out. Again, being proactive could eliminate problems down the road. We all know things happen, and it seems the good ones are always getting into trouble. Having females bred to a bull, that does not have the DNA requirements complete, makes registration difficult, if not impossible. These regulations are in place to not only protect our members, but to keep the integrity of the Canadian herd book intact. Canadian Charolais Association DNA Requirements:
female) must be Parent Verified ✓ Embryo Transfer calves must be Parent Verified ✓ Donor Dams must have DNA on file The Board of Directors continues to move the breed forward with new projects, one of those projects is the Genomic Producer Advancement (GPA). This program allows all members to access free 100K genomic tests on 10% of the females you enrolled in 2020. Please contact the office for more details and to get your DNA kits. Genomic testing is a great way to improve the accuracy of EPDs. This program will run to the end of 2021. The Board of Directors, along with the Breed Improvement Committee, made the decision to take the performance page live starting July 1st. Now when anyone does a search on an animal on our website, all that animal’s performance data is available for viewing. This includes all data that has been collected and submitted to the CCA registry system. The Board and breed improvement felt this information would be very helpful when searching out new genetics for your operation. If you do not want your performance data going public, you do have the option to click a privacy tab and your information will remain private. There is one other addition to the search page, any animal that has been genomic tested will have a new GEPD logo on their search page.
✓ Walking sires must have DNA on file ✓ ALL AI sires, including semen from on- farm collection, must be Parent Verified (Sire AND Dam) ✓ ALL Full French animals (male and
You can now check out individual animal’s performance data, index and ranking on Animal Search at www.charolais.com. It’s great for researching genetic potential for your herd.

HERD HEALTH
Clostridial Disease in Cattle Summary Points & Practice Tips Roy Lewis DVM
We need to vaccinate to prevent the multiple different ways cattle can get clostridial disease, from scours, to blackleg, to tetanus. It is a relatively cheap vaccination, and the need for routine vaccination is great and very cost effective. This article, in point form, explains much about clostridial disease in Canadian cattle, both commercial and purebred. There are still producers that let this vaccine lapse in their herds. • Clostridial Vaccines offer good protection, as long as one recognizes the need to booster vaccinate. Single vaccination, with most clostridial vaccines, does not provide adequate anti-toxin titres and a second boost is definitely required. The protection is very high, approaching 100%, much like some of our COVID vaccinations. • Clostridium Hemolyticum (redwater) immunity only lasts six months, but is much longer for the other clostridial diseases, so is the limiting bacteria in clostridial vaccines. • Clostridium Hemolyticum (redwater) is seen with much greater frequency in Alberta, on the eastern slopes of the rockies, and in areas of Manitoba, where an increased incidence of liver flukes predispose to Redwater disease. Once you see red urine, 50% of blood cells are destroyed, so cattle become very anemic. • Some producers now vaccinate just going onto pasture, to insure immunity will last over the grazing season from clostridium hemoyticum. In highly endemic areas, twice yearly vaccination is recommended. • Tetanus is seen in outbreak form with banding of large calves when castrating, such as yearling purebred bulls that don’t pass semen evaluations. In order to be fully 20
protected, calves must have a priming shot three to four weeks prior to banding of tetanus (available in some 8 way vaccines, Tasvax and Covexin plus). The booster shot is given at banding. I have seen several outbreaks from vaccinating calves right at castrating, and them dying 3-4 weeks later from tetanus, just as the scrotum is sloughing off. • With clostridial vaccines, I encourage producers to have proper handling maintaining the chain of refrigeration. Don’t use partially used containers, or expired product, and agitiate the bacterin container before using it. Try to use clostridial vaccines that have a low dosage, such as 2cc. • Always have epinephrine available when processing, in case of reactions. • Inside housed cattle are not protected from clostridial disease. Baled hay can have soil in it and any disturbed ground has the potential to expose cattle to clostridial spores. • I see expensive bulls insured that die of clostridial disease, so boostering them, at semen evaluation time, is a good idea. Bulls often are neglected in our vaccination protocols. • The Clostridial Perfringens organisms are one of the groups of bacteria we see in neonatal scours. All of the scour vaccines have protection for Perfringens D. One has coverage for C & D. With C & D protection you get cross coverage for B. We are protecting for the toxins these organisms produce. Talk to your veterinarian about the specific scours vaccine you use. It will also be based on when in your management scheme you vaccinate. • Novyi Type B (Black Disease) Concurrent infection with fasciola (liver flukes). Control flukes if in the area and the same with hemolyticum. • Clostridial organisms can vary across the country, so keep in mind where your cattle are pasturing. IE Charolais Banner • October 2021
vaccination with a clostridial vaccine absent of clos hemolyticum, and then pasturing on the eastern slopes of the Rockies is asking for trouble. • In my eyes, that is why it is imperative to do postmortems on all sudden deaths in all species of production animals. Ruling in, or out, clostridial disease, anthrax, and pneumonia toxins, all determine a course of preventative treatment for the herd. • Similar to Anthrax, with clostridial spores surviving many decades, veterinarians should be more proactive in encouraging quick removal and disposal, from the pasture or pen. If we don’t, over time contamination becomes worse, and in severe cases can overwhelm even vaccination protection. • All prostaglandins (estrumate, etc.) have as a warning, injections may be prone to set up clostridial disease, so any cows, both dairy or beef, on any sort of synchronization program, are susceptible if not vaccinated. Keep cows, both beef and dairy, up to date in their vaccinations yearly. • As a final point, let’s all try to insure we vaccinate our cattle for the appropriate clostridial diseases, including scour vaccinations, for the enteric clostridium perfringens organisms. Clostridial vaccines are still the cheapest vaccines on the market, providing broad, very effective coverage, and yet, we still see outbreaks every year unfortunately. • When clostridial disease hits, the death toll can be high, and if on pasture, difficult to round up for vaccination, so preventative vaccination is a must. Your veterinarian is the best one to know what clostridial organisms you specifically need in your geographic area, and which vaccination protocols will work best, for the timing of your vaccination management.

Phillips Wins Provincial High School Rodeo Title
Peri Phillips competed in her last provincial High School Rodeo Finals in June, at Olds, Alberta, where she had qualified in barrels, poles, breakaway roping and working cow horse. She also represented team Alberta, throughout the year, as a member of Team Cinch, and held the Vice President position for her district. She ended up winning two out of the three rounds in Working Cow Horse, winning the Provincial title and qualifying her for the National High School Rodeo Finals, in Lincoln, Nebraska, in July. Her runs in Nebraska didn’t go as she had hoped, but she made great friends and loved the experience. Peri is attending Otero Jr College, in La Junta, Colorado, taking Animal Science and is a member of the rodeo team competing in breakaway roping. She is a CCYA Alumni and daughter of Kasey and Arlana Phillips, Kay-R Land & Cattle, Waskatenau, Alberta.

OBITUARY
Gerry Bowes 1941 - 2021
Gerald Ivan Bowes passed away peacefully after a long battle with cancer, on August 23, 2021, in Indian Head, Saskatchewan. In Gerry’s early years, he travelled and lived in a lot of different places, as his dad was an officer in the RCAF. While stationed in Germany, his dad was killed in an auto accident when Gerry was 16. Gerry, along with his mother and brother, moved back to Canada. Gerry was very athletic as a young man, he excelled in most sports that he participated in. He was invited and went to the Ottawa Rough Riders. Gerry soon got a call from the RCMP, which put an end to football, and he joined the force in 1959. In 1964 he married Lou Skihar and left the force to start his family. Gerry always had a love for livestock, even while with the RCMP, breaking horses and helping ranchers with their cattle. He also worked

with the PFRA for five years. He even dabbled in the hog industry for a bit. Gerry opened an A.I. service in Melville, but in 1971 he packed up the family and moved to Calgary, Alberta, where he took a job with Western Breeders, at Balzac. Gerry enjoyed being “the semen pimp”, but in 1976 it was time for a new chapter, and he joined the Canadian Charolais Association, as their National fieldman and Breed Improvement Manager. Gerry was a trail blazer as a National fieldman, as he was the first to do this sort of job. He was instrumental in getting Charolais tried and accepted in the commercial industry across the country and made many lifelong acquaintances from his extensive travels. Gerry’s love for the Charolais breed was evident as he bought a share in the Charolais bull, Wildor Maverick, in the mid 70s. In 1979, Gerry again packed up Lou, Danette, and Todd and they moved to Indian Head, SK to be closer to their aging parents. He continued as fieldman and the
Breed Improvement Manager for the Charolais Association until 1988. At that time, Gerry bought some land south of Indian Head, and with his son Todd, they operated under the B-4 Charolais name. Over the years, Gerry sat on many boards in the cattle industry. He was always willing to help others with the knowledge that he had obtained over the years. He was a fixture at Agribition for many years, and always had a smile to go with his ‘rock crusher’ handshake. Gerry received many acknowledgments in the livestock industry including being presented the SCA Honor Scroll in 2012, and the CCA Honor Roll in 2013. Even with all his accomplishments, Gerry new his greatest was his family. On August 16th, Gerry and Lou celebrated their 57th wedding anniversary shortly before his passing. Gerry will be dearly missed by all who new him, but especially by his wife, Lou, daughter Danette (Brent) Smith and son Todd (Kim) Bowes.
Lloyd DeBruycker
1933 – 2021
Retired farmer, rancher and agricultural trailblazer, Lloyd Henry DeBruycker, 87, of Dutton, MT, died September 1, 2021. Lloyd and his wife Jane, of 67 years, established DeBruycker Charolais, in 1964 and built it into one of the most respected herds in the USA.

Members of the American International Charolais Association, Lloyd and Jane were honored by the industry in 2003, when they were inducted into the AICA Hall of Fame in recognition of their influence on the Charolais cattle breed and their contributions to the beef cattle industry. Today, the DeBruycker Charolais operation, including the home place and the ranches of Lloyd’s

children, encompasses 25,000 deeded acres, some 50,000 leased acres and raises 2,200 mother cows and 1,000 bulls a year, making the family conglomeration the largest registered Charolais herd in the world. Over the years, there have been many DeBruycker bulls sold into Canada and semen from bulls like Mr. Perfect and Cigar were used heavily here.

ASSOCIATION NEWS
The Manitoba Charolais Association held their 54th Annual General Meeting on Wednesday, July 21st, at the Brookdale Community Centre. The meeting was well received, with 25 members and their families in attendance to enjoy socializing with fellow breeders. They were treated to a catered supper by JMB Charolais prior to the start of the meeting. Michael Hunter, of Roblin, was elected president of the Manitoba Charolais Association. Matthew Ramsey, of Hamiota, was elected 1st Vice President. Erin Jackson, of Inglis, was elected to fill the 2nd Vice President position. Rae Trimble-Olson continues as Secretary-Treasurer for the MCA board. Owen Sellman, of McCreary, and Scott Baron, of Carberry, were elected to serve a term on the MCA Board of Directors. Ron McDonald, of Sidney, and Erin Jackson were re-elected to serve another term on the MCA Board of Directors. Retiring directors Kevin Stebeleski, of Oakburn, and Scott Johnston, of Rathwell, were thanked for their service of their recent MCA director term. The financial report was presented. At year-end of 2020, assets were just over $33,000, total revenue of $38,926, total expenses for 2020 of $22,505, resulting in revenue over expenses of $16,421. The largest expenditure on
Manitoba Charolais AGM the books for 2020 was the printing and publishing of the MCA Breeders’ Map and Directory, followed by the printing and publishing of the MCA Bulletin, the semi-annual publication that is put together and mailed by the MCA. Promotion and sponsorship expenses were the third largest expense, with a substantial amount of the expenditure being invested into youth programs. There were 62 feed scoops awarded to 4-H members in Manitoba who exhibited Charolais or Charcross animals in 2020. The MCA awarded 2 scholarships in 2020 valued at $750 each, to Kendra Cline, of Cline Cattle Co., Belmont, and Megan Perih, of Dauphin. Members of the MCA nominated and voted on candidates suitable to be named the MCA Charolais Ambassador of the year for 2021. At the conclusion of this process, JMB Charolais, Bert McDonald & Judy Hart, of Brookdale, received the honour. The MCA Commercial Breeder of the Year for 2021 was voted on and awarded to Riddell Farms, of Pierson. Other committee reports were given prior to the conclusion of the meeting. The Manitoba Charolais Youth Association has begun their fundraising efforts to host the conference in 2023. Social media will continue to be completed by Tanya
Airey. The website work will continue to be done by Dalyse Robertson through the Charolais Banner website. Improvements and an overhaul of the website, with how to make it more mobile friendly will be explored. AgEx looks to be going ahead this year, with Covid protocols in place, running October 27th-30th, with the Charolais show taking place on Friday, October 29th. The bull and heifer jackpot will take place on Wednesday, October 27th, and the junior show on Saturday, October 30th. The MCA Bulletin will continue to be printed in the spring and the fall. There has been 15-20 ads purchased in each issue. The meeting concluded, with no other business being brought forward. This event was well received in this time of social distancing, where the opportunities have been few and far between.

The conference started with the participants competing in their individual marketing classes.
Scott & Rebecca Bohrson of Bohrson Marketing spoke to the participants about marketing and available tools to utilize when selecting animals for the educational portion.
One of the most anticipated events of CCYA, the welcome mixer, saw participants and parents compete in a number of challenges to kick off the conference. The welcome mixer, where smiles, laughs, having fun and getting dirty is the name of the game.

Day two was jam packed with individual judging, team judging, team marketing and keep & cull.

It wouldn’t be a CCYA conference without a game or two (or three) of mount your camel.
Day three saw the participants compete in team grooming, showmanship, and herdsmanship with Summer Synergy.
The final day of conference was closing ceremonies and the confirmation show.
What CCYA is all about - working together, new friendships, and having fun.
