POINTS TO PONDER
From the Field Helge By
The fall of 2014 will go down in history as one of the most memorable in the cattle business. The first of October and the calf market just keeps getting stronger. Reports show yearling grass cattle going into feedlots at $2,400 a head and some big weaned calves hitting the $2,000 mark. Pounds do pay as the big calves are really providing a premium in total dollars to the producers. The cull cow and bull market is also strong with good, big cows topping $2,000/head and bulls up to $4,000 to go to harvest. Looks like the time to clean house in your herds and replace those cows that aren’t doing the job with some top end females. Three cull cows and you can put a front pasture female into your program that should be more profitable and will eat less than three. In this issue you will see a number of fall sales left to come and I look forward to seeing you at them. Interest has been good for early sales and I think this will trend will continue as some breeders want to expand and some new operations are starting up. Craig Scott and I will help you find what you are looking for, however we can. Just give us a call. The show season is upon us now too, and again I would encourage you to come out and support the producers who are being the promoters for the breed and see the
progeny of some new bulls in the industry. Comparing different genetics and programs is just part of shows. Networking with breeders is a very important part of the business. Also in this issue, you will see our report on the World Charolais Congress held in France this past summer. It was great to get back to the homeland of Charolais during the 150th anniversary of the Herdbook and the 50th Anniversary of the formation of Charolais International. Candace and I had never been there and enjoyed being a part of the memorable event. The first Canadian board member on Charolais International was Clare Geddes, from Manitoba, who was president of the CCA at the time. In 2015, the Canadian Charolais Association will be welcoming the world when it hosts the World Technical Conference. This is in the off years of the Congresses and is more of a working event between the many associations around the world. Plans are set to do seminars, tour some herds and country in Saskatchewan and Alberta. In 2016, the next World Congress is in Mexico and this will be a great event that we got a glimpse of in a promotional video in France. It will be held in the centre of Mexico in the province of Jalisco with time in the city of Guadalajara. Looks like the end of April, first part of May, so start thinking about it now as time goes quickly and you won’t want to
miss it. In the Fall Connection, you will have seen the list of members and the number of cows enrolled. As we were doing it, we noticed that some of your membership information could use some updating. If you don’t like how your first names, or lack of, reads, then update your information with the CCA please. It is good to have all your information as accurate as possible including updating your email addresses as well. Speaking of email lists, if you have fallen off our email list and would like the occasional news item from the Charolais Banner you can join again on our home page at charolaisbanner.com. We sent a survey to our list offering a free week’s web display ad to one lucky winner that replied within the prescribed time. XXX Farms, of Kitscoty, Alberta, was the lucky winner. This was necessary because of the new law Canada implemented regulating how we can electronically contact our customers. If you did not reply to the survey, you are no longer on our list, so please take action. Also if you want some real time information, you can follow me on Twitter @CharolaisBanner. I will leave you with a tweet from Ag More Than Ever. Let’s be thoughtful Agvocates online. “Social media is like toothpaste—once it’s out, it doesn’t go back in”. Until next time, Helge

POINTS À RÉFLÉCHIR
Du Champ Helge By
These past few months I’ve met with beef producers and ranchers across Canada and the world; the passion for the beef industry is reaching new heights. HERD HEALTH
Ringworm Roy Lewis DVM
Ringworm can be a very common condition, especially in our young stock throughout the winter months. Several different fungi that are fairly widespread in the environment cause it. Generally ringworm is not of a huge concern except for two reasons. It is a zoonotic disease meaning that humans can contract it and it is of course a big concern regarding show cattle, 4‐H member’s calves or purebred breeders exporting cattle. For these reasons alone it is worth discussing. Ringworm develops as crusty circular lesions with hairloss starting primarily on the eyes and face. Pretty much all species of animals can contract ringworm. It is more common in younger ones which have not been exposed previously. In a more isolated herd where it has not been present for several years you will notice it on mature stock as well. Having contracted ringworm previously there is an inherent immunity that is developed. Also mature cattle don’t have the stressors of rapid growth, weaning or parasite burdens which weaken the immune system and healthiness of the skin which all predispose to developing ringworm if the spores are present. Healthy skin is a great barrier against ringworm. Vitamins A and D are necessary for healthy skin so a common add on to treatment is one good shot of these vitamins to boost the health of the skin. Vitamin D is present in sunlight and sunlight helps kill this organism as well so clinical cases crop up in the winter and often disappear spontaneously in the summer. If you are worried there is too much ringworm developing in a commercial or purebred herd a
18
simple choice exists. If the ringworm is mainly in small patches confined mainly to around the eyes or on the face and neck, it is of no concern to the animal. Weight gains will be normal and there is no more susceptibility to other diseases being contracted; this has well been proven. If lots of ringworm develops spreading down over the rest of the body, these animals have some distress and should definitely be treated. Ringworm is a relatively slow infection to contract so likewise it is a slow thing to get rid of. Producers in my opinion have a tendency to treat at a higher frequency then necessary. One or two treatments at weekly intervals are usually all that is necessary. If the crust is not redeveloping and the skin looks healthy with small hairs starting to grow back you are on the road to recovery. It will take quite a while for the hair to completely fill in. For show and 4‐H animals three to four weeks of time from last treatment should get them back to normal. Treatment consists of taking a stiff bristled brush (don’t use this brush for anything else) and removing the crusty material. This should reveal a red inflamed underside. This allows any treatment applied to contact the actual ringworm fungus. I use the commercial products like “Kopertox” effectively. They stain the hair green which lasts for a while so if shows or displays are just around the corner use hibitane cream, crest toothpaste or a myriad of other products your veterinarian may prescribe. I generally will repeat a week later. The beauty of these other products is they have a more natural white to creamy color and can be removed if necessary. As mentioned you can contract ringworm from cattle or other species
Charolais Banner • October 2014
that have it so be careful. Practice strict biosecurity measures; wear gloves, wash well after and try to avoid rubbing up against the ringworm lesions. Put brushes used in a plastic bag and label so others don’t mistakenly use them for another procedure. Ringworm spreads by direct contact so regular brushes, halters and saddles or saddle blankets in horses can easily spread it one to another. By the time you see ringworm others in the same pen have probably already been exposed and may or may not develop it so isolation in my opinion is generally not necessary. As a preventative following bad years, disinfection involves harsher compounds such as formaldehyde or phenols sprayed onto rub areas, fence posts, etc. where you believe the fungus is. These organisms are hardy against climatic conditions so complete disinfection in an outside environment is pretty much impossible. There have been vaccines developed over the years that are relatively effective but rather expensive and really only have a place in expensive show stock where owners want to minimize the likelihood of ringworm developing just before show season. Otherwise the vaccines don’t have much of a place commercially as there are many more fatal or production limiting diseases we need to focus on in beef cattle production. The important thing to remember is ringworm is more of a blemish than anything which can be treated but be careful you don’t contract it as the human cases are harder to clear up. I should know, as I had it once as a kid and three to four times in a 30 plus year veterinary career.

Delegates from eight countries started the Congress
T
he 2014 World Charolais Congress was held in France, birthplace of the Charolais breed. It also marked the 150th Anniversary of the Charolais Herdbook in France and 50th Anniversary of the Charolais International. There was no more fitting location to celebrate these events than where it all started. The Congress opened with a tour of Chantilly Castle, just north of Paris. The chateu’s art gallery, the Musée Condé, houses one of the finest collections of paintings in
France (after the Louvre). The library of the Petit Chateu contains over 1500 manuscripts and 17,500 printed volumes that is part of the collection of over 700 incunabula, and some 300 medieval manuscripts. The estate overlooks the Chantilly Racecourse and the Grandes Écuries (Great Stables) which contains the Living Museum of the Horse. The estate has had modern use when the chateu and the Great Stables were featured in the 1985 James Bond movie A View to a Kill, as

the home of villainous Max Zorin (played by Christopher Walken) which was being infiltrated by Bond (played for the last time by Roger Moore). Pink Floyd performed, on two consecutive nights, at the chateu during The Division Bell Tour in 1994. That evening we dined at Magny‐ Cours exhibition grounds where the National Charolais Show was being held. This is also the home of the Herdbook Charolais offices. covered in white cattle. Attendees got a brief glimpse of the show cattle before dinner and then returned to the hotel in Nevers. The Congress was a wine lover’s extravaganza as we had the opportunity to indulge in many great French wines selected to enhance our dining pleasure. The next morning we were off to tour the herd of Gueullet Methenier nearby which featured some impressive meat calves. The two buses then separated with some touring more of the herd and others going to the SICABA abattoir which processes 105 head of cattle, 540 lambs, 20 calves and 8 pigs a week. They have a very strict standard and all animals must be born and raised in the local area. They have their own label and premiums are paid for the high quality they produce. Not only are the beef cattle very thick but they had the thickest lamb carcasses that I have ever seen. They gave an excellent tour of not only the facility and the workings but of the company

females entered for the National show and it was impressive to see the full rings of only Charolais at this show. The females ranged in age from 9 months to 10 years of age. Dinner at the show grounds and back to the hotels.

The start of our next day saw some stay and explore the city of Nevers and get in some retail therapy. For the rest of us it was to Colmont/Mondial Charolais who are working with the genetic company Charolais Univers. This was a well organized stop where the representative of Univers talked about the different bulls they offered and showed progeny of them in this program. A number of their herd was polled and they want to have 50% of their herd polled in the next 10 years. Lunch and the rest of the day was back at Magny‐Cours for the adult male show. Here we saw bulls from 9 months to 7 years of age. There was power here. Most of the mature bulls would have weighed in excess of 3,000 lbs. with some approaching close to 4,000. This portion of the show concluded with a 150th Anniversary celebration where over 800 people were served a five coarse meal in a very large tent. Dining was followed by dancing to continued on page 24

an upbeat band that demanded attention. Having this many people attend a banquet after a show was the envy of every country in attendance. The next day we saw the beautiful tourist city of Bourges and the wine exhibition at Sancerre before going back to Magny‐Cours to have time to visit with some of the breeders and have dinner. Sunday we departed for the city of Vichy where we spent a touristy day exploring the many facets of this beautiful city. Lunch at the Aletti Palace Hotel’s beautiful banquet room, a walking tour explaining the history of the city and information about the many different healing waters underground in the Vichy area were included. The geothermal mineral water under Vichy has long been a source of health spa activities, but it was Napolean that started to make this little city a famous place for the rich and famous to retreat for rejuvenation and healing. On our walking tour we were given a taste of the five different mineral waters under and around Vichy heated by volcanic activity in the earth. The water is used in everything from throat lozenges to skin care products.
Vichy also has a colourful history through many years. In World War II it was occupied by Nazi Germany for a few years. The architecture is ornate and varied, the parks are beautiful walking areas and the atmosphere is very relaxed, lending itself to its healing billing. Most everyone on the tour felt this was a place they would like to pay a return visit. Many five course meals were served on this trip and the one at the Casino de Vichy did not disappoint. We discovered the French love to eat slow and savour their meal time. Two hour lunches and three hour dinners starting at 8:00 p.m. were the norm. We departed for Beaune the next day and toured two farms along the way. The Beauzon Brother’s herd of 160 cows was of very high quality including the champion female from Paris who was on display with her powerful bull calf. The second stop was at Elevage Charolais GAEC Gauthe. This is a large herd with 350 females and they have been very successful and respected. One of the brothers Francois was a judge of young stock at the national show we attended. Lunch was served in the longest barn we have seen. It featured live entertainment

and, of course, good food and wine. The morning started with the Food Efficiency Conference with a multitude of speakers talking about research that is ongoing on the Charolais breed in France. There are 2,200 members of Herdbook Charolais with 250,000 pedigree Charolais and about 5 million in total. There are a number of Charolais branded products including a Charolais burger at McDonalds. In the afternoon, many went to the Elvanovia A.I. Centre which houses and collects the Optimal Genetics/ Genes Diffusion bulls. They cleaned up and paraded 10 of their bulls they are marketing. The alternate program for the afternoon included a tour of the Hospices de Beaune. It was founded in 1443 by Nicolas Rolin, chancellor of Burgundy, as a hospital for the poor. The original hospital building, the Hotel‐Dieu, one of the finest examples of French fifteenth‐century architecture, is now a museum. Visiting the Saint Chistope en Brionnais livestock market was a highlight the next day. This 500 year old market is very important to the
Charolais breed. It is situated in Charolais country, near the village of Oye, the birthplace of Charolais. 60,000 animals are sold here each year and are predominantly Charolais. A wonderful lunch of Charolais beef was served at the Institute of Charolais. This facility houses a Charolais museum, gift shop and dining area with chefs to promote Charolais beef. Many pictures were taken and souvenirs were purchased. The evening’s feature was a spectacular garden party at the Lagrost Feed Mill. A brief presentation and tour preceded the garden party featuring numerous delectable hors d’ouvres, multitudes of fine French wine, a live band, a second stage with traditional dancers. Many of the international guests were surprised to see beer available and enjoyed the chance for a change of beverage. The evening ended with a splendid display of fireworks. It was a marvelous event on a wonderful evening. On our way back to Nevers from Macon, the group toured another top end herd of Pichard Hugues. These

operations went to a lot of work to clean up their facilities to make them appealing and useable for meals. Besides touring us through some of the 110 head herd there were a number of local breeders that also brought some animals to display. Fabulous weather, excellent scenery and quality cattle was a great combination. The final day of the Congress
featured the World Charolais AGM and the National Calf show, both back at Magny‐Cours. The AGM will be highlighted in a separate article. Many of these breeders showed mature animals the week previous, took them home and returned the following week with cattle for the calf show and National sale. About 400 bulls and heifer calves ranging in age from 5 months to 8 months of age
came to compete. At the end of the day there was a young bull sale with over 60 from the show offered. The closing banquet was held at the Casino de Pougues‐les‐Eaux in Nevers. Many thank yous were expressed to the host committee by the attending countries and hugs and farewells expressed between attendees.

INTERNATIONAL NEWS
Charolais International Annual General Meeting The 2014 Charolais International AGM was held the last day of the World Congress at the show grounds at Magny‐Cours, France. There were voting delegates from 10 countries including Mexico, U.S.A., United Kingdom, France, Australia, Sweden, Hungary, Ireland, Eastonia and Canada. Minutes and Financial reports were presented and showed there is money in the account to do some future projects as well as update the Charolais International website at www.charolais‐international.com, which includes links to member countries. It was restated that Canada will host the 2015 World Technical
Conference and Mexico will host the 2016 World Charolais Congress which will be held around Guadalajara in the province of Jalisco. There are some countries discussing the couple of Congresses in 2018 and 2020, but nothing is definite yet. No country has shown interest in hosting the 2017 Technical Conference at this point. In elections, Helge By, Canada, was elected president for the next year while Luis Enrique Villasenor Gutierrez, Mexico and Michel Baudot, France were elected Vice‐Presidents. Brian Wickham from Ireland representing INTERBEEF which is a committee of ICAR (International Committee for Animal Recording),
gave a detailed presentation on what their goals are and since that meeting Charolais International have asked Robert Williams, Director of Breed Improvement & Foreign Marketing for the American International Charolais Association to represent us on the Interbeef working committee to explore these options for Charolais breeders around the world: 1. Forum for sharing knowledge on recording & genetic evaluations of beef breeds & traits. 2. Maintain guidelines & standards for recording & genetic evaluations. 3. Conduct international surveys. 4. Develop international genetic evaluation services. 5. Facilitate use of genomic selection.

CANADIAN CHAROLAIS YOUTH ASSOCIATION NEWS
Annual Semen Auction Courtney Black, National Board Treasurer
Every year the Canadian Charolais Youth Association benefits strongly from various fundraising activities that are organized by the CCYA youth. One fundraising activity that helps the CCYA strongly is the annual Semen Auction. Each year the CCYA generously receives donated semen from different breeders all across Canada, to be auctioned to buyers at a National Charolais Show. This year the semen auction will take place at the Manitoba Livestock Expo, during the Charolais national show. In the auction this year will be semen from five different bulls: • LT Blue Blood 1131 donated by Sliding Hills Charolais & Future Farms, • Elders Zeus 22Z donated by Wilgenbusch Charolais & Hunter Charolais, • Circle Cee Legend 307A donated by Horseshoe E Charolais, • Rolling Acres Oh Yeah 8X donated by Rolling Acres Charolais & Whiskey
Hollow Charolais, and • LT Ledger 0332 P donated by J&J Trust, Lindskov‐Thiel Ranch, Domek Charolais, Eaton Charolais, Southern Cattle Co. & Wright Charolais. CCYA 2015 will be held on July 22nd‐ 25th in Yorkton, Saskatchewan, and all the proceeds from the semen auction go towards the funding of the Leadership Scholarships that are given out at the conference. Along with the Semen Auction fundraiser, the Saskatchewan conference planning committee is selling raffle tickets on a heifer donated by Beck Farms in order to fundraise more for the 2015 CCYA Conference & Show. There will be representatives from the planning committee at Agribition to purchase tickets, and the draw is to be made at the conclusion of the Agribition sale. On behalf of all of the CCYA youth along with all of the National Board members, we would like to thank all of the breeders who have kindly donated semen and the buyers who make the CCYA conferences a success year after year.

elcome to the Alberta Charolais Association event of the year. The ACA Select Pen Bull Show & Sale is truly an event you won’t want to miss. It starts with the ACA AGM on Thursday afternoon, followed by supper and the Select Single Bull Show. All the cattle are housed in the great facility at the Westerner Park and there is lots of time to view the cattle and visit with breeders from across the country. On Friday morning, there is the Select Pen Bull Show, with draws of $11,000 in Bull Sale Credits and Pick of the Barn Winner. Last year there were some premier breeders who found their next herdbull in the pen show. The finale of the two days is the Select Sale and what an offering we have for you this year. We are very excited to be helping with the sale again and although the numbers aren’t big, the quality is extremely high. The breeders participating this year put their very best in knowing the caliber of cattle that will be here. As you will see in the catalogue, this sale has something for everyone from an exclusive semen offering from a proven herdsire, to unique embryos that will put you at the forefront of the industry. We have some picks and choices of heifer calves that let you get into the keeper pen and find a great one. There are some
fancy show prospect heifer calves that would work in any program, purebred or clubby. Bred heifers that took some convincing to get, as the breeders didn’t want to part with them knowing how good they would be. Some cow/calf pairs that show how well these cows can produce and some very select herdbull prospects. Everything from Full French to Red Factor to Black, there is something here for everyone. If you want to improve the quality of your herd or buy your first Charolais, this sale is the place to be. The quality is high, the networking will be great and you can enjoy two days of wonderful Charolais hospitality. If we can be of any assistance or get you more information before the sale to help facilitate your purchasing, please don’t hesitate to contact us, any of the sale staff or consignors. Always in the best interest of Charolais, Helge & Candace By Sale Manager

Prowler has one of the most impressive sets of EPDs you will find in the business – just examine his 96 Calving Ease and -.9 Birth Weight EPD with a 29 Milk EPD. We have bred Prowler to heifers, so we know that he is an easy calver. You can use him to add CE 96 BW 0.9 WW 34 YW 72 M 29.0 TM 46 length of body, extra frame size, and he will put a good big foot on his offspring. And the other big plus is that the Prowler calves have a great disposition. In the past two years, Prowler sons have been high sellers in our bull sales at $25,000 to White Lake Colony and $20,000 to Wrangler Charolais and the first daughters are proving to be exceptional producers. This will be the only semen that will be made available for the 2015 breeding season.

A Firewater daughter coming to you from the top of the PCC bred heifer pen. We wanted to bring our best to the Alberta Select and her she is! Miss Prairie Cove 311A is a moderate framed, big bodied, sharp fronted, well made female. These are the type of females that make you nothing but money, if she lays down and has a bull calf you could have your next herdbull, or a heifer calf and you could be going showing. Miss Prairie Cove 311A is a daughter of the heavy milking Sparrows Sanchez daughter that was pick of the heifer calves at Ferme Louber. This female has loads of potential and to top it all off she is bred to the ultra popular LT LEDGER April 12. View a video of Miss Prairie Cove 311A at www.prairiecovecharolais.com.

PICK OF THE HEIFER CALVES OPPORTUNITY KNOCKS
What an exciting time to be in the cattle business and what an opportunity to accelerate your breeding program. We at Springside like it when people do well with our genetics, and “pick of the heifer calves” is an investment in your future! 2014 saw a huge heifer crop of near 100, and we narrowed it down to 57 replacements. Included in this selection is a full sister to the $30,000 VFF 104A that sold to Hicken Ranch; a Pastor heifer from the dam of the $33,000 VFF Timeout 172Y; as well as 20 other Pastor calves. Or you could select from HTA Ice 19X, Winn Mans Chavez 826Y and Tri-N Prefix daughters. The cow families are strong, the pedigrees are hot, and consistency is very evident. Whether you are looking for a show heifer, a brood matron, or a future donor candidate, she is in this offering. Feel free to select directly from the show string or come back to the ranch. There is NO WRONG CHOICE here!

Bred April 11to Gerrard Pastor 35Z. 49W is a top end female and will be a welcome addition to any herd. We admire her for her udder, fertility, production, length, and depth. Her daughter 99Y, as a two year old, had the high selling Chavez bull calf, selling for $8,750 at VFF. A son, 19A was in the show string, and carefully analyze her Pastor heifer calf at side. It definitely represents how hard this cow works. 49W is bred back the same way. What would a bull calf from a female of this caliber be worth? BW 107 lb., September 18 weight 1025 lb. MLC 403B is a thick, stylish, Major 52X daughter. She is halter broke and very quiet. Maple Leaf Major 52X was the high seller in our 2012 sale, selling 1/2 share to Bar Punch for $15,250.00, after the sale we agreed to bring Dean Davidson on board also as part owner. 52X is just like his dad Major 620, putting the natural muscling into his progeny. 403B is also at the top of our heifer calves and it took some convincing to bring her here. She will be a front end cow in your pasture.

Vikse Athena 43A & Vikse Juliet 81A How do we hold back our excitement when this cattle market is totally and completely fired up? All things pointed to the price corrections in the industry but none of us could have truly realized the true shortage in the markets. With more and more urbanization in China and other parts of the world the taste for beef has sky rocketed and will continue to do so for years to come. Nothing makes me more pumped up about life than family, friends and cattle. We wanted to share our passion and have brought you Charolais females that will raise progeny that will make a difference. Time Out 172Y has rocked our world and there have been so many sons last year that topped sales all across North America. I have never seen a breed of cattle in such a shortage as the Charolais breed. The commercial cattleman simply put “Just can’t get enough great white bulls”. We have seen the demand at the auction markets of silver and buckskin steers and it blows my mind. I knew it would be strong, I kept telling myself that but didn’t realize how crazy it really was. We always said if we sell females put something in the sale that will make foundation females that will make a difference in a buyer’s program. We are very proud of 123B and we are sure she will make you look twice. So excited to be part of this exciting breed. Canadian Charolais Youth Conference & Show 2014
“Back to Boots, Buckles and Bandanas”
CCYA National Board (L-R): Kirstin Sparrow, Youth Co-ordinator, Vanscoy, SK; Sarah Weinbender, President, Canora, SK; Rachael Verwey, Portage la Prairie, MB; Wyatt Ching, Rockglen, SK; Tomina Jackson, Secretary, Inglis, MB; Shae-Lynn Evans, Vice-President, Kenaston, SK; Courtney Black, Treasurer, Foresters Falls, ON; missing Luke Marshall, Innisfail, AB and Megan McLeod, Cochrane, AB.
The Canadian Charolais Youth Conference & Show was held in Portage La Prairie, Manitoba, July 23‐26, 2014. Forty enthusiastic youth participated in the annual event, exhibiting 45 head. CCYA has a history of being really hot, but this year the temperatures were more moderate making it easier
for the participants to enjoy. As always, the opening mixer accomplished its goal of getting the kids working together and having fun. By the end of the first evening, everyone was over the first day jitters and had met many new people. It is always fun for the parents to watch as they are astounded their children
Carman and Donna Jackson received the CCYA Honouree Award from Tomina Jackson, Rachael Verwey, Sarah Weinbender and Kirstin Sparrow
are willing to participate in the antics planned by the National Board with enthusiasm. The experienced parents stand a little farther back, to prevent getting in the way of flying water, whipping cream and water balloons. LEJ Charolais hosted supper before the Keep and Cull Competition at a small community hall in their neighbourhood, which was well received by all. The group continued on to their farm where the competition was completed and a competitive round of Mount Your Camel was played. Barn Bosses were Michael Hunter, Roblin, and Haylan Jackson, Inglis. Both are CCYA Alumni and pitched in to make the week successful. If being Barn Boss wasn’t enough, they also both judged a competition. Parents of the organizing committee also pitched in to enable the kids to participate in the week’s activities. Events like this don’t happen without dedicated volunteers. A special thanks to the Jacksons, Prestons, Verweys and Olsons for seeing this event through successfully. Andre Steppler was also a big helping hand, providing animals for the team grooming finals and judging wherever needed.
