Welcome to the 4th Annual Stephen Charolais “Time to Muscle Up” bull sale. First of all, we are very PROUD and THANKFULL for the continuous support from all repeat buyers and look forward to establishing a solid foundation with new buyers! Second, we would like to throw out a huge THANKS to our guest consigners from the very beginning of this journey, Bar H Charolais and DRD Charolais, both of whom have consecutively been consigning top-notch bulls to the offerings in this sale! On our farm, located at Moosomin Lake, we calve 350 Simmental/Red Angus and straight Red Angus cows. Maximizing on those top notch tan calves, we are starting to calve the Full French cows starting Jan/Feb and the commercials have been backed off to the first week of March. Splitting this calving up has made the process a little more tolerable and allows us to do a better job on the end product. Any other typical year, we have 3 boys playing hockey full time, pulling Pam and I in 3 different directions between practices and games! Pam maintains a busy career as a K-12 school principal as well. This past year, we have had more time as a farming family and the boys have become more involved in learning about and taking care of animals. Count your blessings as they say. During our regular breeding season with the commercial herd, I am able to try different bulls and bloodlines I have accumulated. I guess you could say that we get to do experimental breeding on different sized cows to shoot for the “Biggest Bang for Our Buck” for when we take the calves to town (and these days you need to make every POUND count)! So when I am breeding my Full French cows, I’m always taking into consideration what I think most people’s cow herds mostly consist of. When new buyers ask why we use Full French bulls on our commercial herd, I reply with a realistic answer: “well, why don’t I just show you my calves?” With using the straight Red Angus or the Angus/Simm cross cows (which I think most herds consist of today, whether Red or Black), we are getting those BIG, TAN, SOGGY, HAIRED-UP calves that buyers fight over! With using these crosses, the polled gene is so prominent in these Angus and Simm cows, there are next to no horns presenting themselves anymore! For us, it’s a “NO BRAINER” for the extra POUNDS and HAIR you gain by using Full French bulls! We take great pride in our animals! They will be clean and tidy on sale day, so on saying this, if you purchase a bull and you are not completely satisfied, PLEASE talk to me about it so I can make it right and we can carry on in a friendly and respectful business relationship. We take a lot of pride in our work and we have told previous buyers over the years, our last name is attached to our business and that should count for something. Welcome to the 4th Annual Stephen Charolais and Guests Bull Sale. Again, this sale is a place to buy good quality bulls, early in the season, with a wide variety of selection. From Full French, French influence, Purebred, Red Factor, Polled and Horned, Two-Year Olds and Yearlings, there really is something for everyone. All the bulls are videoed and these are linked beside the catalogue on our website for your convenience. This is the only sale in Saskatchewan or Manitoba where there are Full French offered, and if you are looking for the extra thickness and meat, it is here. Many of the bulls from all three operations are AI sired, and have genetics from excellent calving ease bulls to high performers that will be appealing to all levels of producers, seedstock or commercial. We invite you to stop by these operations ahead of the sale or come to Whitewood the day before the sale to view the offering. If there are crowd restrictions, or you feel more comfortable to bid from home, there are options. The sale will be broadcast live on DVAuction or you can be on the phone with any of the sale staff or consignors. We are here to make your buying experience as easy and pleasurable as possible. All the two-year old bulls will be semen tested, but with an early sale, the yearling bulls will be vet checked but taken home and semen tested by the end of March when they are a little older. Delivery is available for $75 /bull up to 200 km and is payable sale day. Two-Year Olds will be delivered for $75/bull for up to 200 km and is payable sale day. Late Delivery Option is available on two-year olds for a $200 wintering fee until April 1. Delivery will be availabe for the $75 fee or they can be picked up at your convenience. Hoover is a smooth polled bull off a new exciting Homozygous Full French sire from France called Mister PP; he is a bull with really good index numbers. Mister PP was on test in a highend test station in France for 7 years before any seed stock was available. Hoover’s dam is one of my favorite females in my herd and she always follows through on her consistency in her progeny from year to year. I have two polled bulls in my sale off this sire and I think they are pretty neat!

Hagan is off another AI sire I imported a couple years ago; his name was Hamel. Hagan comes from a very well balanced pedigree especially on his dam’s side. There is a lot of maternal and performance there, so when you throw the new pedigree of Hamel in the mixture, it’s kind of a unique outcome.

Hugo will be very easy to find in the pen! Hugo is off an AI sire named Rethel, who was imported from France. Rethel is a son of the great Jumper bull whom I have used time and time again. Jumper was known for his consistency and second-tonone weaning weights off purebred and commercial cows. Bullet-proof is how I would describe him! When you see this Jumper grandson, Hugo, any questions you have will be answered with one walk through the pen! I think Hugo has all the attributes to make an outstanding HERDSIRE! I would like to retain semen for in herd use.

BIRTH WEIGHT & CALVING EASE University studies in Wyoming and data from Montana and Colorado lend credence to the following conclusions: 1. The birth weight itself influences calving ease by 65%. 2. The female has 60-70% influence on birth weight of her calf. 3. The bull has 30-40% influence on birth weight of his progeny. 4. Pelvic measurement and angle, as well as the shape of the calf have 35-40% influence on calving ease. 5. Length of gestation greatly affects birth weight. A fetus can gain over one pound per day in the last days of gestation. 6. Weather and temperature in the last 30 days affect the length of gestation. 7. Size and maturity of the cow influence calving ease. Most commercial producers do not take birth weights. Guessing is as inaccurate as driving with a broken speedometer - what’s thought to be 55 mph may in fact be 65 to 70 mph, and what’s thought to be 70-80 lb may actually be 80-90 lb. Remember, everything is relevant. Increased growth, frame and performance will increase BW. A longer bodied calf will weigh more. If a calf is expected to have genetics for growth, it will display this prior to birth as well as after. As a rule of thumb, it takes a calf weighing 85 lb at birth to finish at 1200-1250 lb. A cow should easily give birth to a calf weight 8% of her own body weight. Thus a 1200 lb cow should give birth to a 96 lb calf with ease. Continued selection for light birth weights will ultimately reduce the mature sizes and performance of your cattle.

WHAT’S A BULL WORTH? Cowman Formula Increase in pounds per calf from a top-performance bull x number of cows bred to him per year x no of years to keep the bull x expected selling price of calves = Additional dollars you can pay for a better bull Example: A bull who will add 30 lb to the weaning weight of each of his calves mated to 25 cows per year for 4 years and you sell the calves for $1.50 per pound. 30 x 25 = 750 x 4 = 3000 x $1.50 = $4,500 This bull is worth $4,500 more than the average bull who will keep your weaning weights the same. Take this formula and put your own figures in and see what you can afford to pay. This equation does not consider the increase in value due to calving ease, higher quality replacement heifers, yearling growth, feedlot gain and improved carcass quality.

TERMS & CONDITIONS TERMS: The terms of the sale are cash or cheque payable immediately after the sale in Canadian funds. All settlements must be made with the sale clerks before cattle will be released. The right of property will not pass until final payment is made. BIDDING: Each animal will sell to the highest bidder. Bidders unable to attend the sale may phone their bids and instructions to the sale manager, auctioneer or special representatives. Bids must be received in sufficient time prior to the sale. DISPUTES: Bidding will be reopened between the parties involved. If no further bid is made, the buyer will be the person from whom the auctioneer accepted the last bid. The auctioneer’s decision is final. ANNOUNCEMENTS: Announcements made from the auction block will take precedence over printed matter in the catalogue. Buyers are cautioned to pay close attention to announcements. PURCHASER’S RISK: Each animal becomes the risk of the purchaser as soon as sold. Animals will be cared for at the purchaser’s risk for a reasonable length of time. All animals left with the seller must be insured. CERTIFICATE OF REGISTRATION: Each animal will carry papers issued by the Canadian Charolais Association. A certificate of registry duly transferred will be furnished to the buyer after payment has been made. DELIVERY: Assistance will be given in making delivery after the sale. The purchaser agrees shipping arrangements will be at the convenience of the seller, but will be as soon as practical after the sale, at the buyer’s risk.
