Welcome
to Stephen Charolais
Welcome to the second annual Stephen Charolais “Time to Muscle Up” bull sale. First of all, we are very THANKFUL for the continuous support from our NEW and repeat buyers. Second of all, we would like to throw out a huge THANKS to our guest consigners DRD Charolais and Bar H Charolais – it has been a real pleasure working with these great people to help make the sale a success! We just realized that it has been 13 years now since we started this business and we have learned a lot about what to do and what not to do. It has been a rewarding learning experience to say the least. On our family farm, located at Moosomin Lake, we also calve out 375 Simmental/Red Angus cows, starting with the Full French herd and our commercial first calf heifers starting in January followed by the big herd starting February 15. During our regular breeding season we get many opportunities for trial runs in order to select the genetics that will give us the “Biggest Bang For Our Buck” when we take the calves to town. When new buyers ask us why we use Full French on are family farm, we have a realistic and easy way to show them – simply take a look at our resulting calves. With the straight Angus and Angus Simm cross cows, which most herds consist of these days, there are next to no horns presenting themselves anymore. For us, it is a “No Brainer” for the extra pounds you gain by using Full French! We take great pride in our animals! They will be clean and tidy on sale day, so on saying this, if you purchase a bull and you are not completely satisfied, please talk to us about it so we can try to make it right! We take a lot of pride in our work and as we have told previous buyers over the years, our last name is attached to our business and that should count for something. We look forward to meeting new customers and continuing our work with old customers. We enjoy the people we meet and the satisfied customers that continue their relationships with us well beyond sale day. To conclude, we want to be truthful with our customers about the fact that our numbers are lower than anticipated this year, as we had E-coli go through are older calves in the wettest spring we have ever had. It spread through the water. It is the first time this has happened to us so we ended up losing a large number of older bull calves. This is the reason you will see we added 4 older bulls to the program to try to keep my numbers up to a decent amount. None of these BULLS has been exposed to the cows. You have our word and that Kelly & Pam Stephen and family should still mean something in this business. Box 26, Moosomin, SK S0G 3N0

Sincerely Kelly & Pam Stephen
Welcome to the 2nd Annual Stephen Charolais and Guests Bull Sale. The first sale last year provided some good buying throughout with value for quality on a solid offering. This is a unique sale with a mix of Full French, French influence, Purebred, Red Factor, Polled & Horned, Two-Year Olds and Yearlings. Really something for everyone and high quality throughout.
All the two-year old bulls will be semen tested but with an early sale, the yearling bulls will be vet checked but taken back home and semen tested by the end of March when they are a little older.
The Full French offering from Kelly Stephen is unique to this part of the world and provides the extra thickness and meat that many of you are looking for. Several of his bulls, along with the offering of bulls from DRD and Bar H are AI sired with everything from excellent calving ease bulls to high performing bulls that would fit in the most discriminating seedstock or commercial producers’ herds. You are welcome to stop by any of these operations before the sale and preview the offering.
Sincerely, Helge & Candace By • Jon Wright

Fleetwood is a brute of a calf who will knock the legs out from under those taller cows if need be. Fleetwood is a Jumper son and I rave about Jumper in my Full French herd plus the bulls I use on my commercial cow herd! Fleetwood is a deep and soggy bull calf with a tremendous performance and a hair coat like a highlander and Jumper throws all that into his calves. Just ask Dale Tucker from AB; he uses many of my bulls with Jumper pedigrees in their 600+ herd cattle operation.

What’s a bull worth? Cowman Formula Increase in pounds per calf from a top-performance bull x number of cows bred to him per year x no of years to keep the bull x expected selling price of calves = Additional dollars you can pay for a better bull Example: A bull who will add 30 lb to the weaning weight of each of his calves mated to 25 cows per year for 4 years and you sell the calves for $1.50 per pound. 30 x 25 = 750 x 4 = 3000 x 1.50 = $4,500 This bull is worth $4,500 more than the average bull who will keep your weaning weights the same. Take this formula and put your own figures in and see what you can afford to pay. This equation does not consider the increase in value due to calving ease, higher quality replacement heifers, yearling growth, feedlot gain and improved carcass quality.
Birth Weight & Calving Ease University studies in Wyoming and data from Montana and Colorado lend credence to the following conclusions: 1. The birth weight itself influences calving ease by 65%. 2. The female has 60-70% influence on birth weight of her calf. 3. The bull has 30-40% influence on birth weight of his progreny. 4. Pelvic measurement and angle as well as the shape of the calf have 35-40% influence on calving ease. 5. Length of gestation greatly affects birth weight. A fetus can gain over one pound per day in the last days of gestation. 6. Weather and temperature the last 30 days affect the length of gestation. 7. Size and maturity of the cow influence calving ease. Most commercial producers do not take birth weights. Guessing is as inaccurate as driving with a broken speedometer – what’s thought to be 55 mph may in fact be 65 or 70 mph, and what’s thought to be 70-80 lb may actually be 80-90 lb. Remember, everything is relevant. Increased growth, frame and performance will increase BW. A longer bodied calf with weigh more. If a calf is expected to have genetics for growth, it will display this prior to birth as well as after. As a rule of thumb, it takes a calf weighing 85 lb at birth to finish at 1200-1250 lb. A cow should easily give birth to a calf weight 8% of her own body weight. Thus a 1200 lb cow should give birth to a 96 lb calf with ease.
Continued selection for light birth weights will ultimately reduce the mature sizes and performance of your cattle.
