Pavilion Dance South West and Lighthouse, Poole
Welcome to the 2017 Pavilion Dance South West (PDSW) Summit, which showcases work by a selection of artists from South West England. We will explore what is helpful (or not) about regional identification and how artists and promoters from different regions can connect with each other. The Summit provides a chance to make new contacts and support the touring of high quality work. We look forward to getting to know you better and working with you in the future.

The aim was to meet all those organisations that seemed The Summit takes place across our two venues in Bournemouth impenetrable, to meet those people who never replied to her and Poole, and performances will highlight some of the emails, and connect with all those she had always dreamt of collaborating with. excellent work coming out of the South West region, and provide an introduction to new work in development and CONTACT DETAILS: available for touring from Autumn 2017. Countless Yellow Chairs
by Laïla Diallo and Jules Maxwell
“At the heart of it are nine chairs. The two of us, and nine chairs. In turn, they, and we, are an aloneness, an embrace, a memory, an imprint, witnesses. They are bones, they are a forest, they are stacked, they are an aftermath, they are a ballroom, they are resting, they are one short, they hold our weight, they hold our wait. They are countless. And they are nine yellow chairs.” - Laïla Diallo With this work dance maker and composer let the objects take centre stage, fire our imaginations and bring to light something of our own humanness. Countless Yellow Chairs is supported using public funding by Arts Council England, co-commissioned by Theatre Bristol, Bath ICIA and Bristol Old Vic Ferment / Jerwood Charitable Foundation.
ABOUT LAÏLA DIALLO: Laïla Diallo is a dance maker based in Bristol. For the past ten years, she has been creating works, primarily for live performance, that have toured across the UK and internationally. At the end we begin
by Richard Chappell Dance
Taking inspiration from T.S. Eliot’s classic Four Quartets, Richard Chappell presents his new work At the end we begin. Using the notions of time and focus as a point of departure, the piece inhabits Eliot’s poetry through both a sensitive and aggressive dance expression. Stemming from his experience of classical ballet, contemporary dance, martial arts and improvisation, Richard’s powerful choreographic language is combined with composer Samuel Hall’s score, Hannah Taylor’s costume design and dramaturgy by Neus Gil Cortes.

Pitches Puzzle Creature is a 60-minute work for museums, galleries and theatres that questions attitudes to aging, access and the body. Inspired by artist/ architect duo Shusaku Arakawa and Madeline Gins (Reversible Destiny Foundation), Puzzle Creature is an artistic response to their vast body of work and in particular their manifesto We Have Decided Not To Die. Bringing together contemporary dance, music and architecture with a set designed (by the award winning Numen) specifically to affect body perception; Puzzle Creature is created with a BSL communicator and audio describer to embed access and audiences in the heart of the work. The film preview of Empathy follows Neon Dance behind the scenes as they premiere their large scale performance debut of Empathy at Radialsystem V, Berlin in December 2016. Neon Dance (2004) is an internationally recognised dance company that produces adventurous work for the stage, screen and spaces in between. For You I Long the Longest by Luke Brown Dance
A double bill of alluring dance theatre exploring the ever-changing nature of love and romance.
Second Self is an energised play on the relationships between four individuals and how they long for, linger with and let go of one another. Princess is an intimate and audacious autobiographical work that explores the edges of the human experience of love, balancing on the fine line between beauty and brutality. Set within a symbolic boxing ring, Princess combines intricate choreography, text and suggestive imagery of fairy tale-like tones with darker, twisted shades. Luke Brown Dance makes thought-provoking contemporary dance for both the stage and unconventional spaces. The company is interested in the subtleties of how humans socially interact through physical contact, body language and spoken word. These central concepts stem from the fascination of people being people and the passion to devise intricate and moving contemporary dance. Luke Brown Dance creates emotionally engaging and visually distinct dance theatre work, framing stories of human nature which are current and poignant through poetic touches and delicate craft.

RED by David Lloyd’s Mischief Company RED is the new work by Mischief Company exploring the darker side of a classic story – Little Red Riding Hood. Influenced by Dante’s Inferno, we watch as three characters; Red, The Wolf & The Devil, embark on a journey of love, sacrifice and betrayal. Exploring the relationship between Red and The Wolf, you see Red consumed by the forest as we take a dark and misleading pathway to Granny’s house. We watch as the relationship descends into an animalistic madness of manipulation and control, as lovers take actions into their own hands. But who is real in this fairy-tale and who has been brought along for the ride?
Taking theatrical movement as the starting point, choreographer David Lloyd’s previous works have been collaboratively with Dramaturge Natascha Metherell, interweaving movement and storytelling to create innovative physical theatre productions targeting diverse audiences. Supported using public funding by Arts Council England, Commissioned by Pavilion Dance South West and supported by Jasmin Vardimon Company and University of Cumbria.
RED will premiere at Pavilion Dance South West on 21st & 22nd September 2017

Getting out of the regional box: How can artists move beyond boundaries?
Friday 12th May, 2.00 - 3.30pm, Garden Studio, PDSW
Saturday 13th May, 11.30am - 12.45pm, Studio, Lighthouse, Poole
Do organisations and artists really know what is happening outside their region? How can we come together to share knowledge - and not just the organisations at venue meetings, but the artists, too? How can organisations work together to facilitate crossregional collaboration and touring opportunities?
What is it that makes it difficult for artists to get support and or touring opportunities outside of their own region? How can we better support and equip artists to move beyond the boundaries and work UK wide? How can organisations work together to facilitate cross-regional collaboration and touring opportunities?

Beyond Boundaries Dance Summit
Lighthouse, Poole Lighthouse plays a vital role in Poole and the South West as a nationally important cultural building, where creative work is made, rehearsed, discussed, shared and presented. We are unique in that we are the only multi-space venue with four auditoria in the South West, and the largest outside London. We house a symphonic concert hall, mid-scale theatre, small-scale studio theatre, independent cinema, art galleries, and learning spaces. Our audiences can discover and enjoy an extraordinary mix of art forms, not possible elsewhere in the South West, all under one roof.
We are passionate about providing opportunities for our community to experience the benefit the arts bring to individuals, communities and the cultural identity of the place in which we live.
Lighthouse plays an essential part in the delivery of the national and regional arts strategy and has an important role as a receiving venue for national and international theatre, dance, music, contemporary circus and film. We support and enable the creation of work and artist development and provide a home for the region’s orchestra, the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra.
