E M O C L E W Our Bournemouth venue, Pavilion Dance, is five years old this autumn (see page 28) and we are delighted to continue to present more professional dance performances in one venue than just about anywhere in England, outside London. This season’s programme celebrates internationalism and cultural diversity, with work from or inspired by Scandinavia, India, Wales, Belgium, New Zealand, France, Bangladesh and Equatorial Guinea. Illustrating the broad range of forms and styles that contemporary choreographers use, our season includes everything from Breaking to Bharatanatyam and beyond. We believe everybody will find something to connect with at Pavilion Dance South West this autumn.

WELCOME & DON’T MISS

We are particularly excited to welcome back Scottish Dance Theatre on 1st October (page 8) and to present two performances of Tavaziva’s Africarmen on 26th and 27th November (page 16), both internationally acclaimed companies.

We are also co-presenting the National Dance Company Wales with Lighthouse Poole on 6th October (page 18). Dance can change lives. You can help secure its future.

DANCE CAN CHANGE LIVES

FOCUS: DANCE FOR PARKINSON’S

Dance is an art form as well as healthy exercise. It can enrich communities, improve public health and increase social skills and life satisfaction.

One of our priorities is dance and health. We believe that dance can have a positive effect on everybody, but a particular focus is the unique contribution dance can make to the health and wellbeing of people over 65. We run regular classes for older people as well as for those with Parkinson’s, a condition that affects approximately one in every 500 people in the UK. Some common symptoms include difficulties with balance, co-ordination, posture and walking. Our Parkinson’s Dance class addresses these symptoms in a fun, stimulating and motivating environment.

WE CAN MAKE IT HAPPEN Our work here at Pavilion Dance South West is all about connecting as many people as possible with dance, by running more than 40 classes and workshops for all ages and abilities and by making the cultural landscape in the South West more exciting and diverse for you, our audiences.

These classes are a lifeline in every way, simply because they turn everything negative into positive… Parkinson’s Dance participant

YOU CAN HELP SECURE THE FUTURE

We are pleased to announce that this autumn we will again be fundraising for our Parkinson’s Dance class with “Business come Dancing”. Last year the event was supported by some fantastic local businesses and we hope to see even more amazing performances this December. This year we will be working with Lewis Manning Hospice to support their great work. If you would like to know more about the event and how to support our work, please contact Joanne Howard on joanne@pdsw.org.uk.

SUPPORT US

We receive investment from Arts Council England and Bournemouth Borough Council to run our core activities, and we earn some income through hires and ticket sales. However, as a not-for-profit charity we subsidise every ticket and re-invest all income to fund new projects and support the development of choreographers and new dance performance. It is likely that public funding for the arts will decrease even more than it already has, so we need to secure a future for our work. You can help secure this future.

The Herald

An emotional journey from darkly comic and surreal to sensual and beautiful dance theatre of the highest quality

The Scotsman

Lachky’s choreography is like a pencil flying across the page, producing quick-witted movements that captivate...

PERFORMANCE PROGRAMME

The Scotsman

Scottish Dance Theatre presents two contrasting and bold works by internationally acclaimed choreographers Jo Strømgren and Anton Lachky. Norwegian Jo Strømgren tells the story of a community struggling to hide their dark misdemeanours under winter’s snowy blanket. Punctuated with the devastatingly fragile songs of Schubert’s Eine Winterreise, Scottish Dance Theatre take you on a journey through the cycle of the coldest, darkest season.

Dreamers are people who dare to dream while not being asleep. Anton Lachky takes pleasure in making sense from nonsense and exploring links between reality and surrealism. His work highlights the beauty and power of the moving body and intertwines it with his quirky and humorous style.

WE’RE 5 THIS YEAR!

ANNIVERSARY OPEN DOORS DAY

Our venue, Pavilion Dance, is five years old this September. Since its opening in 2010, we have delivered more than 8000 dance classes, showed nearly 500 live performances, and supported more than 60 artists and companies to create work in our studios. And that’s only part of what we do! We think this is a reason to celebrate with you by opening our doors on Saturday 5 September for a range of free taster classes, workshops and visual art! We also think it is the perfect time to launch our autumn season, so do come along and hear from our Artistic Director what exciting live dance performances, films and events we have in store for you this autumn.

Our birthday present to you! A half-price ticket to any of our live dance performances in the autumn if booked together with a class between 7 and 19 September. For more information on the ticket deal and events on the day please give us a ring on 01202 203630 or pick up a leaflet at reception.
