WELCOME Wow! What an amazing summer it has been for Pavilion Dance South West with literally thousands of people watching and participating in dance in Bournemouth and across the South West! What’s more, we have been busy redesigning the organisation with an exciting new brand and website, both launching this September. We are now, officially, Pavilion Dance South West (PDSW) – an organisation working across the South West, with a fantastic venue in Bournemouth, called Pavilion Dance. Our new logo is inspired by this beautiful art deco building by the sea, the angle of the south west region and the sense that we provide a window through which all sorts of people can discover dance performance, participation, development, opportunities, expertise and information. This autumn season launches with Dracula (page 3), a brand-new work we have commissioned, and features a full season of nine “Thursday Night is Dance Night” performances (page 4). You can book a Golden Ticket for just £50. We believe this is the best collection of dance in a single season in the country and the best ticket deal, too!

NEW BRAND, NEW WEBSITE, NEW SEASON, NEW US ... NEW YOU? Pavilion Dance South West is also proud to be presenting a tremendous art house and world cinema series: “Monday Night is Film Night” (pages 17–18). We are also excited to be the Core Creative Partner for Bournemouth Arts By The Sea Festival between 20 September and 12 October (page 31). Pavilion Dance South West is about much more than watching dance, though. We offer 40 regular dance classes (page 28), attended by over 500 people every week, bespoke support for dance artists (page 33) and an extensive programme of partnership activities across the South West of England (page 34). So, take the plunge this autumn: Wherever you are in the South West, get involved with dance. It can inspire, energise, captivate and transform: it could just be where you find the new you!

The performance on Friday 4 October is our season launch event. Ticket holders are invited to share a celebratory pre-show drink with us at 6.45pm. Acclaimed dancer Jonathan Goddard plays the infamous vampire count whose sinister and ruthless ambitions challenge the very fabric of Victorian society. Mark Bruce Company was formed in 1991. THU OCT

Tickets: £5 to £10

BY ASH DANCE THEATRE TEMPLE DANCE FOR THE 21ST CENTURY

Golden Ticket: £50 (Details page 4)

EXPECT: TRADITIONAL INDIAN BHARATANATYAM DANCE WITH A VERY MODERN TWIST Mukherjee’s solos are works of art. There is no greater Indian dancer in Great Britain. Mike Dixon, Dance Europe

Ash Dance Theatre presents temple dance for twenty-first century audiences. In worldwide.margam.alt, Mukherjee focuses on the traditional structure of a Bharatanatyam dance recital, entitled Margam, meaning journey.

Ash has been featured in Time Out London’s “Rising Talent”, shortlisted for a Matthew Bourne New Adventures Choreographer Award and was nominated for a Critics’ Circle National Dance Award UK.

Worldwide.margam.alt takes the Margam out of its traditional environment of the Indian temple and puts it into alternative and unexpected situations and scenarios with the intention of travelling via another route, while at the same time still heading towards the original destination. Ash Mukherjee founded his company in 2010. In his work he blends contemporary culture and traditional Indian dance forms. Ash has been involved in TV shows such as BBC 3’s Move Like Michael Jackson and has choreographed for BBC 1’s So You Think You Can Dance, Katie Melua and William Orbit’s music video, The Flood, and Akademi’s Song Of The City.

IT NEEDS HORSES AND HOME FOR BROKEN TURNS

Tickets: £5 to £10

DANCE DOUBLE BILL BY LOST DOG

Golden Ticket: £50 (Details page 4)

EXPECT: BLACK HUMOUR, TEXT AND HIGHLY PHYSICAL DANCE THEATRE

One of the best pieces of dance theatre in recent times. Total Theatre

The Home for Broken Turns is the kind of place that makes you dream of running away to the circus. But it is also a sanctuary, a place where a group of women exist on the outskirts, fiercely protective of each other and ready to attack anything that threatens their dwindling pack.

It Needs Horses tells the tale of a down-at-heel circus duet and their increasingly desperate attempts to entertain the crowd. The glamour has faded and the performers have forgotten their acts, but the show must go on. It Needs Horses won the Place Prize for Dance in 2011. Lost Dog formed in 2004 to explore the territory between dance and theatre. The company works with text, live music and movement and blends these elements to create work in which dance is framed by stories and characters. Ben Duke, Artistic Director of Lost Dog, is a Work Place Artist, Associate Artist at South East Dance and recipient of the Bonnie Bird New Choreography Award 2011.

THU OCT

24 7.30pm

Tickets: £5 to £10 Golden Ticket: £50 (Details page 4)

EXPECT: BEETHOVEN, BEATS AND BREAKS, FOLLOWED BY SCHUBERT AND A DARK WINTER’S TALE Dramatic, grotesque, bleakly comic and delivered with theatrical and technical prowess. The Herald on Winter, Again

Expect virtuosity, humour and surprises as Montreal-based Victor Quijada takes urban dance to new theatrical territory. Heavily influenced by Los Angeles’s Street Dance culture, Second Coming showcases Scottish Dance Theatre’s powerful dancers and features Jasper Gahunia‘s (AKA DJ Lil’ Jaz) soundscapes: Beethoven, beats and breaks. Radical Norwegian choreographer Jo Strømgren mixes beautifully poised dance with a wealth of theatrical associations to tell the story of a community struggling to hide their dark misdemeanours under winter’s snowy blanket. Punctuated with the devastatingly fragile songs of Schubert’s Eine Winterreise, Scottish Dance Theatre takes you on a journey through the cycle of the coldest, darkest season. Scottish Dance Theatre is Scotland’s leading contemporary dance company, based in Dundee. The company is committed to producing excellent and daring work that is led by the power of the dancing body.

SOUNDS AND VISIONS

A TRIPLE BILL BY DARREN ELLIS DANCE

EXPECT: A COMBINATION OF RHYTHM, POWERFUL MODERN DANCE AND LIVE MUSIC The sheer precision of Ellis’s movements make these bits of dance theatre stand out. Ballet Magazine

Long Walk Home is a series of portraits of four women, each at a different stage of their life. This extract shows the second stage, featuring music from acclaimed folk duo, the Askew Sisters. After Effects was created using a specially modified and lit drum kit. Movement and objects are used to trigger a mixture of acoustic and digital drum sounds, thus bringing the drum kit to life. Revolver takes its inspiration from the 1966 Ingmar Bergman film Persona. It is a relentless dance duel between

two exceptional female dancers set to a powerful music score for two electric guitars played live on stage by The Turbulent Eddies. Darren Ellis Dance (DED) was co-founded by Darren Ellis and Martin Collins in 2007 to produce high quality dance in collaboration with other art forms. A BEAUTIFUL AND EMOTIONAL JOURNEY ABOUT A FATHER-SON RELATIONSHIP AND THE EFFECTS OF PARKINSON’S Parkin’Son is inspiring, touching and honest. It ... stresses the value of dance as an essential part of human nature and existence. Dioraphte Dance Prize

Father and son D’Anna explore their relationship on stage: a collection of personal events, shared through the lines of the skin and the shapes of two bodies tied by blood. The project originated from the desire to tell a story by using the limitations brought on by Parkinson’s as opportunities. Highlighting moments and facts that seem unimportant at first glance actually shows that exactly those events make existence memorable. Giulio D’Anna is based in Amsterdam where he graduated in Dance and Choreography in 2009 at SNDO (School for New Dance Development). He is also an alternative medicine therapist and Theta Healer. Young people can review a dance performance, take part in a class, workshop or masterclass, or do work experience to gain their Arts Award certificate. They can even put on their own arts event and tackle difficult issues in an artistic debate. Pavilion Dance South West is now a registered Arts Award Centre, with Arts Award Advisors ready to answer your questions and help you through all levels of Arts Award. Arts Award offers five different levels, four of which are recognised qualifications, with the Gold level being equivalent to half an AS-Level and worth 35 UCAS points.

Pavilion Dance South West is currently working with schools to deliver Arts Award, but we are looking into ways of involving young people in the qualification outside of a school context. If you’d like to know more about the opportunities available with Arts Award at Pavilion Dance South West, please contact our Youth and Education Coordinator, Gemma Connell, at gemma@pdsw.org.uk. For general Arts Award information, please go to www.artsaward.org.uk.

MASTERCLASSES & WORKSHOPS KARLA SHACLOCK COMPANY MASTERCLASS

SAT 19 OCT 9.30am–5pm

This masterclass offers a unique 16+ opportunity to go beyond what participants think is physically, vocally and emotionally possible. The masterclass will explore Dr Karla Shacklock’s highly innovative approach to accessing the performance consciousness in order to reveal the true self, and provide an in-depth insight into the choreographic approaches and repertoire of the Karla Shacklock Company. The masterclass will comprise company class and stretch, the deconstruction and learning of material from current touring work, improvisation, exploration of a range of choreographic tasks and the opportunity to make and perform a short work. Interrogative, highly physical and jam packed full of discoveries and openings.

STOPGAP DANCE COMPANY MASTERCLASS

SUN 20 OCT 9.30am–5pm

A masterclass with Stopgap 16+ Dance Company will involve integrated dance class in the morning, learning some phrases of the company’s new work, Artificial Things, and creative tasks to explore Stopgap’s unique choreographic practice. Stopgap Dance Company seamlessly integrates dancers with and without disabilities. Our work is fuelled by the new and exciting possibilities that arise from the dialogue between distinctive dancers. For professional or student (A-level or University levels) dancers, practitioners, teachers and choreographers. Disabled participants with an experience of dance are also welcome. Photo supplied by Stopgap Dance Company

Suitable for artists from all disciplines (dance, theatre, live art, circus, music). Masterclass Prices: £25 each There are ten bursaries of £20 available for each masterclass. These are for south west-based dance artists or practioners and are available on a first come first served basis. To apply for a bursary, please visit our website www.pdsw.org.uk.

OPEN ART SURGERY 25 TO 30 NOVEMBER Open Art Surgery offers Hip Hop Theatre performers and companies (dancers, musicians, emcees and visual artists) the opportunity to develop and experiment with new ideas, share new work publicly and receive mentorship from Jonzi D and other Hip Hop Theatre aficionados. You will spend a week workshopping and devising with no pressure on an end product. Open Art Surgery allows artists to take creative risks, test ideas and try something new. To express your interest in taking part in Open Art Surgery Bournemouth, please email Ian Abbott on ian@pdsw.org.uk by 1 November with 250 words outlining the idea you wish to test.

We offer three levels of engagement, which reflect our focus on building relationships over time: PDSW Discovery Artists – Spend time in our studios, indulge in creative conversations, get to know each other and receive a small contribution towards travel and accommodation costs. Current PDSW Discovery Artists include: Zoie Logic, Berkavitch and Ballet Nimba PDSW Playtime Artists – Investigate a shared curiosity in our spaces, get additional creative influences to help encourage the work to grow and receive co-commission investment.

ACROSS THE SOUTH WEST The South West has the highest proportion of people over 65 in England at 19.8% (2011) and this figure is expected to rise to 22.8% within 10 years. Office for National Statistics

Each season we will offer you a taste of one aspect of our wide-ranging work across the region. This season our focus is on Dance and Older People. Our dance work with, by and for older people is increasing in importance and exciting in its potential. Pavilion Dance South West co-ordinates the South West Dance Matters partners to consider and support programmes of work for older people and for carers and dancers who want to use dance and movement in their work with older people. We have employed a Dance & Older People Producer for 2013 to map activity across the region and develop and fundraise for a coherent programme of activity. The range of programmes on offer across the region includes fitness for active older people, older people’s dance companies that perform and tour, dance sessions in care homes and bespoke programmes for people with dementia or Parkinson’s or those living with other long-term medical conditions. Our website provides links to all local dance agencies, many of which work with older people.

In Bournemouth, Pavilion Dance South West teamed with Coda Music Trust and Bournemouth Borough Council in April and May to create training opportunities for care home workers to develop singing, music and dance tools. April also saw World Parkinson’s Awareness Day. The event at Pavilion Dance was fully supported by our Parkinsons’s Dance Participants, Parkinson’s UK, physiotherapists, research nurses, a consultant neurologist, Bransgore Rotary Club and music and movement therapists. This autumn programme features regular Parkinson’s Dance classes, an Older and Perfect (OAP) class and a performance of Parkin’Son by Giulio D’Anna (see page 11). Pavilion Dance South West will also be hosting the next Dance for Parkinson’s UK professional development meeting.
