SUPPORTING PARKINSON’S DANCE

LEWIS-MANNING HOSPICE

At Pavilion Dance South West

Parkinson’s Dance Parkinson’s is a progressive neurological condition that affects approximately one in every 500 people in the UK. Although Parkinson’s is not directly lifethreatening, the symptoms of the condition get worse over time and sometimes the diagnosis is more destroying than the disease itself. While the symptoms of Parkinson’s are varied and diverse there are some common symptoms, including difficulties with balance, co-ordination, turning around, posture and walking. Parkinson’s Dance addresses these symptoms in a fun, stimulating, motivating and challenging but safe environment. It is currently developing in the UK with around 8-10 classes available across the country, one of which is run at Pavilion Dance.

Time To Care The Parkinson’s Dance class offers hope and support; helps the participants manage the condition through physical activity and is a time for all involved to have fun. The members socialise and engage with others in a safe environment with support from experienced teachers. Participant John Wood, who was diagnosed with Parkinson’s 14 years ago, comments, “Parkinson’s is all about managing your condition. The more you use the muscles and limbs, the better it is to cope with the symptoms.” John believes that everyone who has Parkinson’s can find a way to live with it. Each person’s symptoms are different but through perseverance and trial and error with different therapies, each person can find the best for them.

Lewis-Manning provide free care and support for people in East Dorset, living with Cancer, Parkinson’s Disease and other life-limiting illnesses. Lewis-Manning supports patients from diagnosis through to end of life, however long or short that time might be.

It is committed to ensuring that the team work together with the patient, their family and friends to offer the highest standard of care, that is creative, flexible, and responsive to need. Set in a stunning location overlooking Poole Harbour and Brownsea Island, it enables people to find a ‘new normal’, to manage their symptoms and to enjoy now.

Russell Walton

Martin Bell

Mary Bell

Russell has entered this year’s event to raise funds for Parkinson’s Dance and LewisManning Hospice. He leads an active life walking his dog Luna and attending the gym regularly, so he understands the benefits of regular exercise and how important it is. This is why Russell wants to raise money for those less fortunate and able bodied.

Having visited Lewis-Manning earlier this year Martin was amazed by their work. They provide FREE care and support for people in East Dorset living with cancer, Parkinson’s Disease and other life-limiting illnesses. “Only 20% of their funding comes from the NHS, this is why I am tripping the light fantastic at this event to hopefully raise £1000. Please help!!!”

Mary is very happy to be raising money for both charities, working towards great causes, for people with life-limiting illnesses. “I have personally experienced looking after someone close to me with degenerative cancer over a long period of time. Without the help from a hospice, this would have been harder to deal with.”
