WELCOME! Spring 2017 sees work by some of the greatest contemporary choreographers being presented live right here in Bournemouth and Poole: Sir Kenneth MacMillan and Robert Cohan (Page 8), Arthur Pita and HeadSpaceDance (Page 9), Jasmin Vardimon (Page 13) and Matthew Bourne (Page 33). In addition we are delighted to present two of the best ensemble companies in the country at the moment, Company Chameleon (Page 10) and StopGap Dance Company whose work, The Enormous Room (Page 11) we have co-commissioned.
We have a very strong programme of family dance performance this spring (Pages 22-26) and a range of opportunities to take part from half term activities (Page 27) to performing in youth dance platforms (Page 28). There is also a new opportunity to audition for our flagship youth dance company, Coast (Page 31), as well as a range of regular weekly classes for everyone from two years old upwards! (Page 31). So, choose this spring to introduce someone new, whatever their age, to the joy of contemporary dance. We bring the very best of it right here to Bournemouth. Enjoy! The PDSW team
WELCOME
Perhaps most exciting of all, we are proud to be presenting two relatively new but formidable companies now making a name for themselves nationally and internationally, Didy Veldman’s Umanoove (Page 14) and DeNada Dance Theatre (Page 12) who we feature on our front cover this season.
At Pavilion Dance South West (PDSW) we are particularly committed to supporting children and young people to dance and to be audiences for dance.

SUPPORT US
Dance can change lives. You can help secure its future.
A WORD FROM THE DEVELOPMENT TEAM As an organisation we are committed to empower and to change people’s lives by involving them in dance. We know through our work with young people, older dancers and especially those with life-limiting conditions, such as Parkinson’s, that dance can be life-affirming.
“Having Parkinson’s is a real pain (or other words to the same effect). However – I have found that there are some silver linings to be found in the situation. One of the most important of these is the Friday dance class with teachers Sophia and Aimee. [...] The classes are very important to me and provide a lifeline if I am feeling low. In short, they are an absolute Godsend.”
To be able to continue this work we do need a little help from you. We are very fortunate to receive support from Arts Council England and from Bournemouth Borough Council to help run our core activities. Like all public investment, however, this has reduced in recent years. We need to find other ways to ensure that we can maintain and build upon the work we do to support people in the local community and beyond to live healthier and happier lives.

DOUBLE YOUR DONATION! One of the ways you can support PDSW is to donate to us. The great news is that over the next three years, every £1 you donate will be doubled, thanks to a Catalyst Evolve grant by Arts Council England, designed to help arts organisations become more resilient in a tougher funding climate. And that’s not all: if you’re a UK tax payer, we can claim an extra 25p for every £1 you give through Gift Aid. So by giving £1 you can create a £2.25 donation for us! Just like that.

FUNDRAISING EVENTS If you’d like to be more involved, why not come to one of our fundraising events this spring (see page 30)? Whether you prefer joining in or watching, we’ve got the right event for you! Learn to glide elegantly across the dance floor at our “Friends of PDSW” Vintage Spring Tea Dance or attend our Business Come Dancing Summer Ball – no more waiting until September, the Bournemouth “Strictly” season starts in June!
THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT Our work would not be possible without our current funders and supporters.

EXPECT
superb dance in a gruesome and darkly surreal double bill Prepare for a wickedly talented cast of seven dancers in this dark and sexy double bill by award-winning director and choreographer Arthur Pita and HeadSpaceDance.
Stepmother leads us into a menacing world where macabre folklore meets the terrifying grotesque. Fairy tales distort into nightmares as familiar characters from Snow White to Hansel and Gretel are pursued by a force of monstrous and abusive stepmothers. Stepfather tells the grisly tale of a twisted family situation, inspired by the folk punk “Country Death Song” from cult American band Violent Femmes. Spiralling into a hellish world of incest and murder, the search for redemption is played out beyond the grave.
The Guardian
PERFORMANCE PROGRAMME
Pita’s dance works have something of the surreal glamour, unsettling psychology and wired humour of a Lynch movie.
Stepmother/Stepfather is commissioned by DanceEast and presented by Arthur Pita’s Openheart Productions in collaboration with HeadSpaceDance. Supported by Arts Council England.

09 7.30pm
Tickets: £12/£10/£8/£6 (details p.37)
an evening of mesmerising and powerful dance theatre that turns the spotlight on mental health and the things we choose to hide
Intimate solos, emotive duets and a rich mix of dance and movement styles combine to create a captivating and powerful double bill by National Dance Award nominees, Company Chameleon. The evening is opened by Words Unspoken, a dynamic short work exploring the untold secrets of the performers on stage.
PERFORMANCE PROGRAMME
The main piece, Witness, turns the spotlight on mental health in a moving portrayal of how loved ones cope when mental health problems take hold of someone close. Delving deep into an issue which affects one in four of us each year, through raw dance and movement, Witness creates a view of mental health that you simply won’t forget. Touching, sad, funny and absurd, this is relevant and up-to-the-minute dance theatre at its best.

PLEASED TO MEET YOU We hope you enjoy your visit to PDSW’s venue, Pavilion Dance, whether you’re here to watch a performance or to take a class. You probably know already that we run 40+ weekly classes for all ages and abilities in two beautiful, professional dance studios. We also present a year-round, trailblazing programme of high-quality contemporary dance performance in an intimate, 180-seat theatre where you’re never far from the action and can experience dance as the exciting, moving, joyful and astonishing artform that it is. Our stylish contemporary foyer is ideal to have a pre-show drink and a chat with friends. Post-show chats: We also hold relaxed, friendly post-show chats here with performers and choreographers who are eager to share their stories and hear your thoughts about the performance over a glass or two.
PLEASED TO MEET YOU
