A WELCOME FROM THE CHIEF EXECUTIVE PDSW is bringing to Bournemouth a vast array of opportunities to watch dance and to dance. Come and visit us. Our entrance is opposite Lower Gardens, at the back of Pavilion Theatre and next to the sea. A much envied location! Over the last two issues, we have expanded our brochure from details about our live performance, events and film programme to include more information about our community work. We hope that you find this useful and that you understand more about what PDSW does. We have introduced tick boxes at the top of each page as we heard that you like to work through the brochure and tick the events you want to come to. Do let us know what you think of these changes. The live performance programme features a variety of hand-picked dance experiences ranging from the solo craft of female choreographer and dancer Antonia Grove (15 February) to contemporary Kathak work danced by Aakash Odedra (15 March) and the provocative DeNada Dance Theatre (12 April). For families with young children, The Doodle Dance Show returns by popular demand (18 February), Prime Theatre bring a tale of two male penguins in New York Zoo who hatched and raised an egg (20 & 21 April) and De Stilte Company from the Netherlands bring a wonderfully surreal tale about a flying cow (27 May).

Choreographers South West (p. 25), Protein’s May Contain Food, May Contain You (p. 27) coming to one of our care homes and Jamaal Burkmar choreographing with Coast Youth Dance Company, which you can watch when they perform with professional company ACE dance and music. Bournemouth is becoming a destination for talented young dancers! If you have been here before you might have noticed a slight price increase for our live performances and Bolshoi screenings. This comes after many years keeping our prices at a very low level to ensure that access is not an issue. As prices increase everywhere we have to do so, too, but we hope you agree with us that we still offer excellent value for money! Zannah Doan, Chief Executive.

Dance can change lives. You can help secure its future.
As an organisation we are committed to empower people by involving them in dance. We frequently hear stories about the positive impact our work has on individuals. It can, quite literally, be life-affirming and life-changing. We are privileged to receive feedback from some of the people whose lives it has touched:
Show was great last night and my year 7’s were left speechless. It was the first time for some of them being in a theatre so it was so lovely for them to have that as a performance. Fran Martin, teacher at the Bourne Academy, about Vuelos by Aracaladanza
The quality of work and the connection we make between dance and the public is recognised by incredibly important grants from Arts Council England and Bournemouth Borough Council – but that only covers 47% of our costs. We are a charity and need money and volunteers to keep our work going. Would you like to help?
Here are a few examples of what you could do to support us. Why don’t you get in touch with us for a coffee and a chat? We look forward to getting to know you. Email the development team at development@pdsw.org.uk
VOLUNTEER WITH US We’d love you to get involved and help us at events. We’re looking for help with front of house duties, back-stage roles and at outdoor events in Bournemouth.
SUPPORT US
In return we offer some free classes and performances. Choose from a full programme of cinema, live screenings, dance performances and classes, including tap, ballet, yoga, parkour and even 1940s social dance. Please get in touch on 01202 203630 or email Andrew Christie at andrew@pdsw.org.uk if you’d like to lend a hand.

DOUBLE YOUR DONATION! Another way you can support PDSW is to donate to us. The great news is that until mid-2019, every £1 you donate will be doubled, thanks to a Catalyst Evolve grant by Arts Council England, designed to help arts organisations become more resilient in a tougher funding climate. And that’s not all: if you’re a UK tax payer, we can claim an extra 25p for every £1 you give through Gift Aid. So by giving £1 you can create a £2.25 donation for us! Just like that.
FUNDRAISING FOR THE MAYOR’S CHARITY APPEAL FUND We are proud to having been chosen as one of the Mayor’s charities in 2017-18 and are looking forward to a series of various fundraising events with our fellow charities, the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, the Russell-Cotes Art Gallery & Museum and the Hannah Levy House Trust. Look out for any fundraising events of any of these four charities, as attending any of them will help all of us!

TEN by ACE dance and music
Thu 1 Mar, 7.30pm £14/£12/£10/£8 (details p. 38) Running time: 55 mins, no interval
EXPECT
an intense and thought-provoking dance production about home and belonging, combining contemporary dance, Flamenco, Kathak and Afro-fusion At a time when more and more people find themselves having to leave their own lands, the concepts of ‘home’ and ‘belonging’ have become unsettlingly absent to millions across the world. Inspired by global migration, TEN is centred around the relationship between two brothers.
Saiqa Bi, Extended Schools Coordinator, Birmingham
Full of intense physical power and very human fragility, TEN explores the concepts of moving away, looking at how and why people choose unimagined destinies over the lives they always thought they would live.
PERFORMANCE PROGRAMME
Amazing, inspiring, innovative, creative and unique. The workshops enabled our children to realise their potential and build confidence.

ECHOES & I IMAGINE by Aakash Odedra Company
Thu 15 Mar, 7.30pm £14/£12/£10/£8 (details p. 38)
EXPECT
Running time: 100 mins, including interval Suitable for all ages
two very different performances by one and the same dancer – one masterful traditional Indian dance, the other funny and moving dance theatre
PERFORMANCE PROGRAMME
Choreographed by contemporary Kathak icon Aditi Mangaldas, Echoes is a stunning approach to the traditional art form of Kathak. In this piece, both choreographer and performer tell us about the strings that connect us to our ancestors. Aakash Odedra dances across a stage invaded by cascades of bells as a mesmerizing symbol of his resounding ties, offering us a glance into Kathak’s divinity and mysterious ways.
I Imagine is an exploration of the dynamism of dance theatre by embodying three generations of immigrants through masks and acting. The result? An intuitive and humorous story of migration and identity. This piece was co-created with spokenword artist Sabrina Mahfouz whose voice opens the dozens of suitcases piled on stage, thus unveiling heart-felt stories that Aakash’s characters share with us.
Odedra is his own man, has his own voice and follows his own star. The Stage

MAY CONTAIN YOU
Mon 26 Mar
PDSW are delighted to welcome back Luca Silvestrini’s Protein to Dorset to present May Contain You, a sister adaptation of the successful show May Contain Food.
May Contain You has a cast of two performers and will blend workshop with performance in the dining hall or lounge of two local care centres. Dressed up as waiters, the performers will welcome residents into their ‘pop-up restaurant,’ offering trays of tinned food such as Birds Eye Custard and Spam, as well as an array of other fruit and vegetables to stimulate conversations around food memories, likes and dislikes! The show gradually evolves from this informal gathering and weaves anecdotes offered up by the audience with dance duets, songs and live music punctuated by cups of tea and jam tarts. We are excited to bring this unique and exciting theatrical experience to care centre members within our local community… bringing dance, which aims to intrigue, surprise and delight to people in their everyday environment. EXHIBITIONS We also use our spaces for exhibitions by visual artists or dance photographers. The exhibitions are free and can be accessed during our daily opening hours (see p. 38 for details). Throughout the summer and winter, PDSW run a series of residencies for artists and dance companies. We invite local visual artists to join them during their rehearsal period to observe,
sketch, paint, and photograph live dance. This process offers the dance artists a unique perspective on their work and has a profound impact on the creation of dance in our venue. This season’s exhibitor, Jan Roe, has contributed to various residencies and her exhibition offers a fascinating insight into the creative process.
JAN ROE – LINES OF ACTION
Wed 31 Jan–Fri 25 May “I have been artist in residence with various dance companies since 2015. The works on exhibition are poster storyboard and drawings from these experiences. My first encounter with Second-Hand Dance was a work called “Getting Dressed”. I loved the title, there is a connection with teaching drawing practice to animation students at Bournemouth University. Animators need to learn the dynamics of squash and stretch. In the act of drawing I try to live the force of the dancers moment. I call this 'drawing the verb, the line of action'. Only afterwards when the drawings can be laid out on the floor is when one discovers the story of this process. Looking forward to seeing more development...” Jan Roe
JOIE DE VIVRE PHOTO EXHIBITION If you would like to book the exhibition for your space or venue, please contact emma@pdsw.org.uk

CREATIVE PARTNERSHIPS
AUB DANCE DEGREE
IN PARTNERSHIP WITH PAVILION DANCE SOUTH WEST
AUB DANCE ‘SCRATCH NIGHT’ 2018 Thu 18 Jan, 7.30pm £7 This scratch evening is brought to you by 3rd year Arts University Bournemouth dance undergraduates. As part of their Dance Production unit, they are required to scratch their creative itch and endeavour to explore fresh choreographic and performance ideas, and to see how their work lands when placed in a theatre with an audience. What is a Scratch Night? Scratch Nights act as a sharing platform for artists to 'test' a current work on a live audience and receive feedback. The work presented at Scratch Nights is most often work-in-progress, and usually in the very early
stages of development. Upon collecting the audience feedback, artists are then able to make adjustments to the piece accordingly. For audiences, Scratch Nights are a great way to see brand new works, contribute to the development of a piece and support the artists, all while having a fun night out! Interested in helping our students? Would you like to be involved in the development of a work-in-progress? Would you like to have your voice heard? Do you fancy a fun night out where you can meet new people? Then the AUB Dance Scratch Night is the place for you!
SPRINGBOARD 2018 Sun 29 Apr, 6pm CREATIVE PARTNERSHIPS
£7 This new dance platform event is led by the BA (Hons) Dance programme at Arts University Bournemouth, in partnership with The Roche Court Educational Trust, with a focus on the exploration of visual art and performance. First year degree dance students will share their original choreographic material in a live performance setting, having responded to exhibited sculpture at the New Art Centre, Roche Court. By using abstracted sculpture as a starting point for new performance, students
36
will develop their understanding of visual language and how observations and discussion can be articulated through development work in the studio, culminating in a live performance. This platform is also open to local schools and colleges, working with the same creative live brief as first year undergraduates, allowing AUB Dance to fully support the local dance ecology and to allow our third year students the chance to curate both content and the creation of the event itself.
