E M O C L WE As the cosy, candle-lit days of Christmas fade, we have plenty to brighten up those dark and dreary weeks in January, February and March! We launch our regular “Thursday Night is Dance Night” performance season with a collision of worlds – the ballet and juggling spectacular 4 X 4 by Gandini Juggling (page 8). Other “Thursday Night” highlights include an immersive promenade performance by PDSW Dream Artist Lîla Dance (page 10), two powerful, all-male dance companies, 2Faced Dance and Zoeielogic Dance Theatre (pages 11 & 12) and Protein’s laugh-out-loud take on life and love in the internet age, LOL (lots of love) (page 9). Every “Thursday Night” performance is followed by a post-show talk in front of our new bar in the foyer.
Children and young people will take centre stage in a number of performances, including our collaboration with local ballet schools and our youth dance platform Origins (pages 16–18). Of course our classes will be back in the new year, commencing on 5 January (page 28) and, as usual, culminating in our end-ofterm Cabaret (page 18). So, come January, your diaries should be jam-packed with delights – including Cinema Mondays, Dance Thursdays and all sorts in between!
See you soon, The PDSW team
WELCOME
Once again we present an outstanding cinema programme, including Benedict Cumberbatch’s portrayal of Alan Turing in The Imitation Game and the James Brown biopic Get On Up (pages 24–25).
The 2015 Bolshoi live season (pages 20–21) includes highlights such as Swan Lake and Ivan The Terrible, and will, this year, be complemented by a season of stunning productions by English National Opera, streamed live from the Coliseum in London (pages 22–23).

Our Vision:
We believe in a world where everyone leads a healthier and more fulfilled life through dance. Registered charity 1111641
People who enjoy the arts and actively engage in dance feel healthier and happier, and dance has therapeutic value for all kinds of conditions, ranging from Parkinson’s and dementia to learning difficulties. Pavilion Dance South West (PDSW) is a not-for-profit organisation and a registered charity. Our aim is to help as many people as possible experience dance, regardless of their background, age or abilities, and to bring the benefits of dance to communities all across the South West of England. You can help us support more people to experience the joy of dance.
IF YOU DO, YOUR SUPPORT COULD
WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?
• Deliver dance classes to improve the quality of life for people living with Parkinson’s (see page 33)
• While Arts Council England and Bournemouth Borough Council continue to invest in us everyone knows there is less public money than there used to be, and the trend is likely to continue
• Enable young people who struggle in mainstream education to find a passion and a positive release (see page 16, Our Groove) • Help increase the number of dance experiences offered to children at school • Support a professional dance performance to be seen by more people across the South West (see page 7)
• At the same time there is more need for dance provision as health budgets reduce and school curricula become narrower • We are committed to keeping ticket prices affordable for everyone and providing lots of free opportunities too so that no one is excluded from accessing dance, which means that we don’t recover our costs
SUPPORT US
• The South West is a region with patchy cultural provision, as it is so rural. It also has a large percentage of older people, many of whom are socially isolated, and a large percentage of vulnerable young people. Our work addresses all these areas, but sustaining what we do is challenging and needs your support
These classes are a lifeline in every way, simply because it turns everything negative into positive.
Your contribution ensures that we can continue to enrich and change lives through dance.

BEYOND THURSDAYS, BEYOND PAVILION DANCE We are also continuing our partnership with Poole Lighthouse in co-presenting highquality, mid-scale dance, which we want to share with a local audience, but which is too big to fit into Pavilion Dance.
We are delighted that this season sees the first in a series of three South West-focused dance tours, Safe by Zoielogic Dance Theatre (page 12). The three tours are part of a project called “Shift & Share”, which will grow to involve 24 smaller scale venues. Subsequent Shift & Share tours will run in Autumn 2015 and Spring 2016.
This season, we are co-presenting critically acclaimed physical theatre company Gecko’s new production, Institute, on 23 and 24 January (page 19).

Four jugglers and four ballet dancers in a spectacular show with live music and atmospheric lighting
PDSW PERFORMANCE SEASON – THURSDAY NIGHT IS DANCE NIGHT
4 X 4 brings together the worlds of ballet and juggling in a mesmerising show that truly pushes the boundaries of the possible. 4 X 4 is directed by world-renowned juggler Sean Gandini and choreographed by Royal Ballet dancer Ludovic Ondiviela. The Guardian
Have you ever wondered whether electronic communication is a contradiction in terms? If so, then LOL (lots of love) is a definitive must-see!
PDSW PERFORMANCE SEASON – THURSDAY NIGHT IS DANCE NIGHT
Human communication on virtual speed, exhilarating and funny … his best creation yet.
EXPECT
Highly entertaining, laugh-out-loud dance theatre exploring love and connection in an online age
LOL enters the lives of a group of six people trapped in their webs of aspirations, desires and self-broadcasting. Talking and dancing at speed, they tackle the baffling etiquette of electronic discourse, make hilarious straight-to-the audience confessions, and dance the physical equivalent of poking and tweeting. With video animation by Rachel Davies and original music by Andy Pink, these ingredients combine to create a razor-sharp commentary on our Facebook society, and an affecting account of human need.
National Dance Award-winning Protein was formed in 1997. Artistic Director Luca Silvestrini uses original choreography, text, music and humour, connecting theatrical experiences with real life stories. Commissioned by DanceEast, Greenwich Dance and The Place, and supported by South Hill Park Arts Centre, Bracknell.

Enter the safe house and immerse yourself in a story of survival and hope, with spectacular performers and a spellbinding soundtrack
PDSW PERFORMANCE SEASON – THURSDAY NIGHT IS DANCE NIGHT
First there was a loud crack in the city, and then a shudder out to sea. Four people arrive in the safe house. With only the clothes on their back, they find themselves asking what had been lost, and what was there left to lose. But in those darkest hours they all start to understand how these strangers, and the contents of a mysterious unclaimed bag, might offer them all the hope and love they need as the sea returns. In this intimate and immersive dance experience you will enter the safe house and literally walk amongst its residents. Watch as the world around you reveals four lives, supported by a cast drawn from the local community, an evocative soundtrack, fearless physicality and new writing. Founded in 2005, Lîla Dance is run by three Artistic Directors who work collaboratively in dance and music to produce meaningful experiences.

Cinematic dance theatre exploring masculinity and camaraderie on the precarious building site of the iconic Empire State building in the 1930s
PDSW PERFORMANCE SEASON – THURSDAY NIGHT IS DANCE NIGHT
Zoielogic Dance Theatre’s powerful new production, Safe, is dance theatre at its most thrilling. Set against the imagined backdrop of New York’s iconic Empire State Building, five outstanding male performers inhabit the world of the heroic construction workers of 1930; the men whose skills, dedication and sheer bravery helped make this incredible building a ground-breaking first.
Safe pits masculinity against fragility; its punchy choreography evokes the intense atmosphere of determination and brotherhood. Choreographer and artistic director Zoie Golding envelops her performers in a throbbing music score as they move within an industrial set that builds throughout the performance. Like the Empire State Building itself, this production is full of ambitious imagination, hope, optimism and collective spirit. Safe is brought to you through Pavilion Dance South West’s Strategic Touring Project, “Shift & Share”. It has been designed to bring dance to more audiences in the South West and is being supported by Arts Council England.

METROPOLIS & WHO KILLED BAMBI?
DANCE DOUBLE BILL BY RENAUD WISER DANCE COMPANY
EXPECT
Fast-paced, intricate choreography in a thought-provoking evening of dance, film, architecture, theatre and music This intriguing double bill presents work by former Rambert dancer Renaud Wiser.
In Who killed Bambi? the performers, supported by a local cast, engage in a narrative evoking the natural hunt of a pack of wolves and a strange dinner party where the food is one of the guests. Meant as a critical look at our modern society, the piece takes inspiration from recent political examples of individuals standing against the group and the subsequent hunt to silence them. For this collaborative work between dance, theatre, music and stage design, choreographer Renaud Wiser brings together an exciting team of artists, including theatre director and Royal Court Theatre international associate Richard Twyman and composer Oliver Coates, resident artist at the Southbank Centre. Metropolis is a 2013 Dance City Commission supported by Arts Council England, Greenwich Dance, Free to Fall and Kingston University. Who Killed Bambi? is a 2014 Dance City commission, co-produced by Pavilion Dance South West and supported by Arts Council England, Greenwich Dance, The Stanley Thomas Johnson Foundation and the Swiss Cultural Fund in Britain. BY YORKE DANCE PROJECT
Eight breathtaking performers presenting an evening of contemporary dance by three generations of choreographers
A blazing triple bill . The Guardian
Eight compellingly athletic dancers at the peak of their physical powers perform a visually stunning and dynamic programme that includes the world premiere of Lingua Franca, a brand-new work by the “father figure” of contemporary dance in Britain, Robert Cohan, set to music by J. S. Bach. His solo Canciones Del Alma, originally choreographed 1978, has been specifically reconstructed for company Artistic Director Yolande Yorke-Edgell.
Unfold to Centre, choreographed by Yorke-Edgell, is an impressive and technically complex re-imagining of Larry Cuba’s pioneering computer-animated film 3/78 [Objects and Transformations], in which the original film footage has been integrated into the choreography. The fast-paced ensemble piece No Strings Attached is the first professional work of 17 year-old rising star choreographer Charlotte Edmonds. It vividly expresses the sheer pleasure of movement. Under the imaginative and confident leadership of its Artistic Director, Yolande Yorke-Edgell, Yorke Dance Project is establishing itself on the small and middle scale dance touring circuits as a repertory company that presents inspiring dance of the highest quality. SAY SOMETHING BY H2DANCE
An interactive performance where the audience join in with an energetic game of “follow the leader”
Sing and move with H2DANCE’s interactive choir. Follow and join in with this 25-minute sound and movement experience, as the performers use soothing sounds and music to guide you around the space. Playing with ideas around group identity, conformism and freedom of expression, Say Something promises to be a unique, unforgettable experience for the whole family. This professionally choreographed piece is performed by children from local schools who have been working with international artists H2DANCE.
Say Something was created in collaboration with composer Sylvia Hallett and is inspired by Janet Cardiff’s sound installation The Forty-Part Motet. H2DANCE are choreographer/performer duo Hanna Gillgren (Sweden) and Heidi Rustgaard (Norway), working between the UK, Norway and Sweden. Their work sits between performance and dance, and can be characterised as interdisciplinary, often taking a humorous approach to serious subject matters.

DANCE DEVELOPMENT
Applications are now open for the 2015 Hip Hop ChoreoLAB. The lab will be an opportunity for two artists to experiment with ideas and test possibilities with a collaborator of their choice, investigating new work over a week without the pressure of producing a finished piece of work. In addition, the participating artists will take part in the Hip Hop Dance Summit at Pavilion Dance South West in May 2015.
THE JOY OF LIFE! A chance to practice interacting in dance in a lovely space, to lovely music with a lovely guide. Participant, Dance in Time Bournemouth (2014)
In a previous feature we have told you about our work with children and young people across the South West. In this edition of PDSW Magazine we’d like to introduce you to “Joie de Vivre”, our programme for older dancers, both amateur and professional. Through all of our work we are trying to raise visibility of the expertise and excellent work on offer, the impact that work has and to promote a positive perception of older dancers and older people dancing.
PDSW MAGAZINE
PDSW is focussing on developing its creative and health work with older people. People aged over 65 make up 20% of the population and this will rise to 26% by 2030. There are more people aged over 85 and 100 than ever before and the number rises year on year. We believe that dance can make a unique contribution to the health and wellbeing of older people. It involves music, creativity, exercise, social interaction and touch – all of which contribute to making a person feel better or happier at the end of a dance session!
In addition, there are an increasing number of professional older dancers who have maintained their fitness levels and love of dance and have the potential to still perform. We were delighted to hear that one of the Company of Elders at Sadler’s Wells has just got his first professional contract aged 63! We aim to raise the visibility of practitioners working in this field and to promote a positive image of older dancers (amateur and professional).

OUR CURRENT PROJECTS
We are developing Dance Companions, a programme to build and support local networks of older people interested in dance. The programme will enable volunteers to accompany older people who find it hard to get out, or would like a companion, so that they can join in dance sessions or go to performances.
International collaborations are being built with colleagues in Finland and Norway. We are developing a programme of exchanges, tours and networks for those involved in creating dance by/for/with older people. Dance & Parkinson’s is an area of work in which we are building a national reputation. We currently run a weekly class at Pavilion Dance and are developing a scheme to roll out more groups across the South West between 2015 and 2018.

PDSW MAGAZINE
We have introduced celebrations in the South West to mark the UN International Day of Older Persons on 1 October which we call Dance in Time. The first event was held in partnership with Dance in Devon at Dartington in 2013 and they now see it as part of their annual programme. Dance in Time Bournemouth was introduced in 2014 in partnership with Activate Performing Arts. We hope that one or two more locations in the South West will offer Dance in Time in 2015.
