Here at Pavilion Dance South West we’re all about movement — we move you physically in our 40 weekly dance and fitness classes, and we hope to move you emotionally with our outstanding performance and film programme. But this summer, we will literally move you out of the building and onto the terraces, to the beach and into town, to present “Unusual Dance in Unusual Places”. The programme includes our ever popular Dancing Terraces, hip hop spectacular B-Town Throwdown, featuring international festival Breakin’ Convention, as well as performances in a gym, in a pub and even on a bus! As a new feature in this brochure we are introducing “PDSW Magazine”, to give you an insight to all the great work we’re doing behind the scenes and across the region.

As a registered charity, we strive to help everyone lead a healthier and more fulfilled life through dance. Registered Charity 1111641
WHY DANCE? Dance is unique: it is an art form as well as a form of exercise with huge benefits for people’s physical and mental health and well-being.
WHAT WE DO Our work here at PDSW is all about helping as many people as possible experience the many benefits of dance, regardless of their background or abilities. Here are a few examples: We run a weekly Parkinson’s Dance class that helps people diagnosed with this condition improve the quality of their lives. We work with schools and local authorities to ensure that dance can be enjoyed by as many children and young people as possible (in 2013-14, over 2,500 children and young people attended PDSW dance events). We bring high-quality performances to Bournemouth, and by supporting artists in developing new work we make the cultural landscape in the South West more exciting and diverse for you, the audiences.
SUPPORT US HOW WE PAY FOR IT Like most arts organisations, we rely on the generosity of individuals and organisations to be able to deliver our full programme. We are very fortunate to receive investment from Arts Council England and from Bournemouth Borough Council to run our core activities, and we also earn income through hiring our spaces, parties, and ticket sales. But as a charity we subsidise every single ticket to keep prices affordable.
HOW YOU CAN HELP Your contribution would ensure that we can continue our work to make dance as accessible as possible and help produce new and cutting-edge work. To donate now, please visit www.pdsw.org.uk/support-us. If you have any questions about our funding or how you can further support our work, please call us on 01202 203637 or email us.

WOULD IT MATTER IF OUR CHILDREN STOPPED DANCING? Strategic investment in ideas clearly works. Thanks to everyone at PDSW for all your support. Antony Waller, Cornwall Dance Partnership
As part of our mission at PDSW to inspire and thrill children and young people through dance, we run a programme called “Co-investment”. It enables us to provide investment to activities that lever in new money to support dance by, with and for children and young people. One of the projects we supported has created a new dance offer to Cornwall schools and set up the “Cornwall Dance Partnership”: “It began in 2012 with the conference ‘Would it matter if our children stopped dancing?’, which was attended by around 60 delegates from schools and the dance industry. The gist of the outcome was that, well, yes, it would matter, and we better get our collective act together and do something about it ... In a first phase, PDSW supported ‘Dance 2013’, a one-year programme of dance in

primary schools, which brought together Kernow Education Arts Partnership (KEAP), the National Trust, Falmouth University, The Works and a number of independent dance specialists. The outdoor primary school events were incorporated into the landscape dance festival SALT 2013, which included dance performances at the National Trust properties of Trelissick and Cotehele, involving around 30 schools over the summer of 2013. The second phase was the creation of Cornwall Dance Partnership, a collective of key organisations working together to create a shared offer for dance in schools. PDSW provided an initial investment to develop the partnership, which brings together KEAP, Dance Republic 2, Falmouth University, Cornwall Sports Partnership, Hall for Cornwall and RIO. Cornwall

Throughout the Spring and Summer it will deliver a range of CPD workshops, events and activities as part of the first ‘menu’ of work that schools can buy into.
from the National Curriculum, so the outlook seemed particularly bleak — luckily, it is now firmly back in the curriculum and not optional, which is a major positive step for dance in schools).”
Over the next two years, around 3,000+ pupils in Cornwall’s schools will be involved in dance activities that would otherwise not have been possible, led by independent dance professionals and highly motivated and skilled teachers.
Many schools are looking out for inspirational creative programmes that they can buy into on their own terms and achieve high value in terms of the return on what they spend. Cornwall Dance Partnership has been created to provide those programmes through dance.
The co-investment programme was the catalyst to bring about a process of change. It gave support at a critical moment, when the profile and presence of dance in primary schools was, and still is, at a particular low (at the time of the 2012 event, dance had been removed

APRIL Reach For the Stars
MAY
COMING SOON: Silent Disco 27th September Our hugely successful outdoor silent disco will be back in September! Experience the decidedly weird sensation of being with a whole host of people dancing wildly, apparently to nothing at all – unless, that is, you’re wearing headphones, in which case there are two DJs to choose from and a host of big tunes. An event not to be missed.
