Landless people march for farms NCEBA DLADLA
P
EOPLE belonging to the Makukhanye Rural Movement, an umbrella body representing small scale farmer associations, land claimants, farm dwellers and development committees, marched from Uitenhage Road to the District offices of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development in Somers Road, Sidwell last Thursday. They handed over a petition to Senior Manager, Prof. Dan Sandi. Assisted by NGO Khanyisa Educational Support, about 500 irate landless people from Uitenhage, Addo, Paterson, Enon and Barsheba, Glenconnor, Kleinpoort, Hankey, Thornhill, Patensie and Dunbrody were literally “red” in their T-shirts carrying placards that said: “We want land now”, “How long must we wait? Enough is enough!” In a memorandum given to Prof Sandi the people accuse the government of working at a snail’s pace in dealing with the land claims. They want the process of restitution to be re-opened and also to get post settlement support in order to succeed as substantial farmers. “There are still outstanding claims that were not processed. Their process did not include people on the ground and as such there are many people who were left out,” said the statement. Among other demands, the people of the Sundays River Valley Municipal area want government to acquire
pieces of land adjacent to the community areas – for them to farm on. The claimants said they live under threats of being evicted “despite being in a democratic South Africa.” According to Simphiwe Dada of Khanyisa Educational Support, his organisation was involved because much of the land is owned by commercial farmers while small scale farmers were left to die poor with their children. “There is no support for small scale farmers,” said Dada. According to the statement, the marchers were aware of the number of farms earmarked for redistribution in the area. They were, however, afraid that the distribution would be done on the basis of “loyalty, patron-

Professor Sandi accepted the petition on behalf of the Provincial Department of Agriculture as well as the National Department of Land Affairs and Agrarian Reform in Bhisho and Pretoria respectively.

GGMSA MSA ggives ives a bboost oost tto o eeducation ducation aatt EEmsengeni msengeni PPrimary rimary GENERAL Motors South Africa handed out 770 Lapdesks to the pupils of Emsengeni Primary School in Zwide earlier this month.
Present at the Lapdesk handover were, from left to right, Emsengeni Primary Grade 5 pupil, Siviwe Zinqeha, 10years old, Mrs Ntonbizandile Nocanda (Principal of Emsengeni Primary School), Edgar Lourencon, (President of GM Sub Saharan Africa and Managing Director of GM South Africa), and Grade R pupil, Lukhanyo Binda, 5 years old (Emsengeni Primary).Photo: SUPPLIED
“By doing this, GMSA emphasised its commitment to making a difference in the community and to help eliminate the desk shortage in excess of 3 million in South Africa”, said Edgar Lourencon, President of General Motors Sub Saharan Africa and Managing Director of General Motors South Africa. “The Lapdesk donation from GMSA meant a lot to the staff and pupils. The atmosphere during the visit and handover was wonderful and everyone was very excited. This day will remain in our hearts as it marks change and improvement in our pupils’ academic life,” said Ntonbisandile Nocanda, Principal of Emsengeni Primary School. “We appreciate the partnership that has started between GMSA and our school and we hope to keep the light burning for the benefit of our children,” said Nocanda. “The students are faced with various challenges on a daily basis but despite all of this the school has an average pass rate of 85% to 90% each year. In addition to these academic achievements, the school also shines in sport and culture. One of the school’s former pupils, Siya Kolisi, is
now playing for the Stormers and was recently included in the SA Springbok Rugby squad. In August, the school’s Marimba Band also competed in an international competition held in Johannesburg and won the Primary School Big Band category, where they outplayed 24 international schools” said Nocanda. GMSA joined forces with The Lapdesk Company in 2011 to address this shortage and over 4 000 Lapdesks have been handed out since the inception of the project and this number will increase to 5 000 by the end of 2012. The Lapdesk Company is using four Isuzu Double Cab vehicles to deliver the Lapdesks to all the schools. Lapdesk donations have been made to schools in Gauteng, Eastern Cape and the Border area and have also been delivered to neighbouring countries, such as Botswana. The Lapdesk Company has created an effective solution which dramatically improves the learning conditions of underprivileged pupils. It provides a vital learning infrastructure and gives the pupils an opportunity to create a better life for themselves through improved academic performance. The Lapdesk is an ergonomically designed, patented product and is made from child-proof materials, printed with non-toxic ink and is 100% recyclable.

Phakamisa High School awards learners for excellence NCEBA DLADLA PHAKAMISA High School awarded their bright learners with certificates during a prize-giving ceremony held at the school hall in Katyu Street, Zwide, Port Elizabeth last Wednesday. “We hold this event every year to motivate our bright learners to continue doing their best but also to say to those who are struggling to pull up your socks, it can be done,” said school principal Lungile Notshe. Notshe said learners should realise that things change and that they must always strive to be the creators of change rather than be its adversaries. “Don’t allow yourselves to be the victim of change. Embrace it, rather. Be determined, have a vision, roll up your sleeves and make things happen,” said Notshe. Notshe told his learners to learn the
intricacies of technology and try to stay abreast of new developments in life. Guest speaker Vuyiswa Fani, a former learner of the school said she came to “testify” that learners from the school can succeed and become whatever it is that they aspire to be in life. A Motherwell High School teacher Fani, who is an Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University graduate, said their poor backgrounds should not be a stumbling block towards their dreams and aspirations in life. “A rose surrounded by thorns is still a rose, never forget that,” said Fani, adding that they must always be focused and never be deceived – by anything. Here are the names of those who received awards for their outstanding performances in more than one Learning Area: Sibongile Kate (Grade 8); Xabiso Magele (Grade 9); Sandisiwe Phillip (Grade 10); Zanele Sinyongo (Grade 11) and Azola Mtala (Grade 12).
CANZIBE Primary School in Motherwell, Port Elizabeth bade farewell to its retired teachers Babara Watani, Zameka Ndlangana and Beauty Ndimeni last Thursday. A glittering function attended by the school’s members of staff, their families, the School Governing Body, pupils and invited guests from neighbouring schools was held at the NU2 Community Hall in Motherwell. “These three teachers have had a good innings. They are the first group of teachers that came to teach here when the school was established in 1989, and they have given uninterrupted service ever since,” said principal Nokuzola Jindela. Jindela thanked the stakeholders of the school for working together to ensure that the trio who have given their all for the school – more than was expected of them – get the best send-off. She told them: “Go home and enjoy the fruits of your hard labour.” Nelson Mandela Bay retired Social Worker and Senior Administrator in the Social Development Department Nosisi Skosana who delivered the keynote address had other plans for “these phenomenal women and groundbreakers” who agreed to be the servants of the nation.

BETTIE GILIOMEE SOUTH Africans will soon have to get used to brand-new bank notes, but apart from the fact that former president Nelson Mandela’s image will now appear on the front of the notes, people will not have to learn new colours, except for the R200 note which could in the past be easily confused with a R20 note.

eight years. The SARB, therefore, acts proactively by developing new banknotes to ensure that the country’s money remains among the safest in the world. This is achieved through continually incorporating state-of-the-art security, technical and design features into banknotes in circulation.
The new series of banknotes issued by the SARB will come into circulation in the latter part of 2012 and while both the current and new banknotes will be in circulation at the same time, the current banknotes will remain legal tender. The South African Reserve Bank has launched a communication campaign to introduce South Africans to the new banknote series. The communication campaign for the launch of the new banknote series is themed “One of a Kind”. It emphasises the fact that each banknote will feature an image of former President Nelson Mandela
Public dialogue over name changing process NCEBA DLADLA NELSON Mandela Bay District Geographic Name-changing Committee is calling on all people of the metro to join in a public dialogue about changing the names of geographic areas and institutions to reflect the spirit of true freedom. Speaking to PE Express Indaba during the Heritage Day Celebrations held at the Red Location Museum in New Brighton, Port Elizabeth last week the District’s Geographic Name-Changing Committee Chairperson Councillor Zukile Jodwana revealed that Nelson Mandela Bay District is lagging behind in this very important exercise of rewriting the history. “We are lagging behind. We must, together as the people of the metro take part in this exercise of looking back into our history, to reflect on the things that made us proud as a people,” said Jodwana.
General information about the new banknotes , The size and denominations of the new banknotes are exactly the same as those of the existing series banknotes , The new banknotes make a unique sound when snapped between one’s fingers.
son Mandela, as the main motif on the front of the note. , As with the existing series of banknotes, the new series of banknotes features South Africa’s “Big Five” animals. The difference is that the images are now at the back of the banknotes. These are Rhinoceros (R10), Elephant (R20), Lion (R50), Buffalo R100 and Leopard (R200). , The SA Coat of Arms is featured prominently in the top left-hand corner of all banknote denominations. The symbol is also visible in the security thread as a holographic image. , The new banknotes feature translations of the words “South African Reserve Bank” into two official South African languages on each banknote denomination.
New banknote design features
, The dominant colours of the new banknotes are the same as those of the current banknotes, with the exception of the new R200 banknote. The colour of the R200 has changed to a yellow-orange to distinguish it from the R20 banknote because the two banknotes in the current series are too similar in colour. , The new series features the image of South Africa’s first democratically elected President, Nel-

New banknote security features
, The security features can be identified using the “look, feel and tilt” approach: LOOK When you hold the new banknote, you should see the following: Watermark: When held to the light, a shadow image of Nelson Mandela will appear. Animal: When held to the light, the animal on the back will be visible as a see-through feature on the banknote Micro-printing: The denomination numeral appears in micro-lettering in the animals to the left of the image of former President Nelson Mandela. This feature can only be seen using a magnifying glass. Micro-printing also appears on the back.
Unique numbering: The unique serial numbers, consisting of letters and numbers, are printed on the back of all new banknotes. A vertical number is on the left-hand side and a horizontal number on the top right. The horizontal number is conical, that is, it grows in height from left to right. FEEL When you touch the new banknote, you should feel the following; RAISED PRINTING: The raised features on the new banknote include the denomination numeral, main motif on the front of the new banknote (image of former President Nelson Mandela), words “South African Reserve Bank”, Coat of Arms and motif on the back of the new banknote. FEATUREFORTHEVISUALLYIMPARED:Raisedlines
Even the names Port Elizabeth, Despatch and Uitenhage which make up the metro should be looked at, according to Cllr Jodwana. People, he added, should say if those names are still relevant in the country with such a rich history and heritage, fauna and flora. The district is also the home to political giants and icons, philanthropists, educationists, artists and great sports heroes and heroines. But, Jodwana was quick to add: “We are not only about changing names for the sake of it, we need to correct the distorted history, the apartheid symbols that erode the dignity of black people. We are also about correcting the names that were wrongly spelt.” An announcement will be made soon to let people know about the meetings to discuss the names and their need for change, said Jodwana. “Nobody should allow the process to take off without their participation. Please do attend.”
on the bottom left and right-hand sides on the front of the notes appear as follows: One raised line: R10, Two raised lines: R20, Three raised lines: R50, Four raised lines: R100 and Five raised lines: R200 TILT When you tilt the new banknote, you should see the following; SECURITY THREAD: The security thread colour will change to the colour of the respective banknote. In the security thread you will also see the number, the Coat of Arms, and the words “SARB” and “Rand”. COLOUR-CHANGING INK: The number on the bottom right of the R10 and R20 is in colour-changing ink, while the R50, R100 and R200 have SPARK colour-changing ink that has a rolling-bar effect. HIDDEN IMAGE: When a new banknote is held almost horizontally to your eyes, the denomination numeral appears in the band below the image of former President Nelson Mandela.

Police Matters
Armed robbery suspect attacked by Somalian community NCEBA DLADLA AN 18-year-old suspect from KwaDwesi in Port Elizabeth was admitted to hospital with two broken legs after he was beaten by Somalians and members of the community last Thursday after the brutal killing of a Somali shop-owner. According to police reports, it is alleged that the suspect and his two accomplices went to a Somalian shop in Phandle Street, Joe Slovo Informal Settlement near KwaDwesi and attacked the
owner. “Two of the suspects went into the shop with one of them carrying a firearm,” said police spokesperson Warrant Officer Dumile Gwavu. Three shots were fired and the Somalian shopowner was killed instantly, according to Gwavu. He said one suspect managed to flee while the 18-year old was attacked by a group of Somalians who were joined by members of the community. They then handed him to the police. “A case of murder and armed robbery has been opened for investigation,” said W/O Gwavu, adding that the suspect’s two legs were broken. He is under police guard in a Port Elizabeth hospital.

Let's talk about TB
Last time we said there were 3 easy steps to stop the spread of the disease. Cough & sneeze into your sleeves or into a piece of cloth; open windows; and eat healthy food. This week: how to optimise treatment in order to achieve the speedy cure and recovery from TB. Again 3 easy steps. The first step is always to report to a health clinic the moment you think you may have TB. How will you know? About 7 things to check for: (1) Am I sweating unusually in bed at night? (2) Am I coughing for more than 2 weeks? (3) Am I loosing appetite and weight? (4) Do I have chest pains, fast breathing or difficulty in breathing? (5) Do I cough blood in my sputum? (6) Am I experiencing recurrent fever chills that are lasting for more than 3 days? (7) Am I experiencing on going weakness and fatigue? If you answer yes to any of the 7 things, immediately report to a clinic so that tests can be done as quickly as possible. No, this is not a painful process. When you are placed on treatment, know and accept that you will have to take your treatment for 6 months. This may seem long, but if you do not want to damage your lungs or infect other people, please stick to this. We give you the medicine free-of-charge and we give you people to support you through this period, and they are really there to help you make sure that you take your treatment everyday, so that you can get healthy and stay healthy as quickly as possible. But it is critical that you stay on the treatment for 6 months, even if after 1 to 2 months you feel so much better. You must also go back to your clinic after the first 2 months of treatment, so that we can check that the medication is doing what it is supposed to do. Do the above, and you can live a fairly normal life whilst on treatment. Yes, you must not unduly exert pressure on your lungs, nor should you smoke, but other than that you can resume your normal daily schedule (including going back to work) within 1 to 3 weeks after starting your medication (the clinic will tell you more) th Next time (i.e. 17 October 2012): What is High Blood Pressure?

THE grand opening of the popular News Café will take place on Friday, October 5, with 5fm’s DJ Dino Bravo and resident DJ Prez entertaining the public with News Café Vibes. Ten days is all it took to refurbish the popular News Café at The Boardwalk. The makeover, which operational owner Sandy Zoetmulder says gives the News Café a “fresh, clean look and the feeling of openness yet still making sure it’s funky with a retro vibe” marked the first time in 10 years that the café had not opened for business. The break gave Zoetmulder the opportunity to have a staff party at Leonardo’s to reward her staff for their hard work. Queen Quma, Lucia Msitshana, Sarah Isaka, Maureen Mgebhuza, Dali Zulu and operational owner Sandy Zoetmulder have all been with News Café at The Boardwalk for 10 years. Zoetmulder presented these employees with certifi-
cates to thank them for all their hard work. Mandy O’Regan, The Boardwalk retail manager, presented Zoetmulder with her service certificate. The new look entails new furniture complimented by olive green wall features, a marble counter top and comfier new bar chairs. The décor and furniture are not the only new addition to News Café. The waitrons are also sporting a “new look” with uniforms by the Soviet designer label. There is also an exciting new menu and selection of cocktails.

Africa Cup of Nations ticket sales campaign launched NCEBA DLADLA SOCCER enthusiasts who buy their tickets for next year’s Orange Africa Cup of Nations (ACN) before 24 October this year, will get a 20 % discount. This was announced at the Public Ticket Sales Campaign Launch at
Super Spar in New Brighton last Wednesday which was attended by Andrew Dipela of the South Africa ACN 2013 Local Organising Committee. Ticket prices will range between R120 and R500. “We are here to launch the ticket sales campaign and saying iTikit’ esandleni (Your ticket in hand),” said Dipela, who is a former PSL General
Manager. At the launch Dipela was accompanied by the deputy Executive Mayor Nancy Sihlwayi, Sport, Arts and Culture Portfolio Chairperson Babalwa Lobishe and Nelson Mandela Bay Economic Development and Recreation Executive Director Zolile Siswana at the launch. Also present at the launch were other senior officials in the sporting
fraternity, especially football. “Nelson Mandela Bay is proving once again that it can hold a sporting event of such a magnitude – like we did during the SA 2010 Fifa World Cup. We are ready to deliver a successful ACN,” said Cllr. Lobishe. She added: “There will also be job opportunities as National Treasury has given a ruling that Procurement should be strictly by local service-
providers.” “We want to say to people from the Bay - go and buy tickets. Show South Africa once more that we are a soccer loving city,” said Siswana. Other confirmed hosts of the Orange ACN South Africa 2013 are Nelspruit, Rustenburg, Johannesburg and Durban. They also had their ticket sales launch campaigns last week.
Legends revive rugby in Walmer Township NCEBA DLADLA THE revival of sport especially rugby in Walmer Township is gaining momentum, thanks to an initiative by former rugby and the sports loving people from this great location. In what could be referred to as a milestone Walmer Rugby Clubs, Wallabies and Wales, which are celebrating six decades of existence, held a sports event as part of Heritage Day Celebrations at Walmer High School from Friday to Monday 21-24 September. The event was to honour sport heroes and rugby Springboks who came from this township.
Chiefs versus Celtic at Mandela Bay stadium this Saturday NCEBA DLADLA KAIZER Chiefs’ Eastern Cape supporters will be glad to know that their team will face their next Absa Premiership opponents Bloemfontein Celtic at the Nelson Mandela Bay stadium this Saturday, October 6. Kick-off is at 6 pm. The Naturena Glamour boys, who are on a winning streak with 16 points in six games, will be hoping to start from where they left off when they trounced rookies Chippa United 2-0 at Soccer City Stadium in Johannesburg last Saturday. The PSL Leading goal scorer Bernard Parker (seven goals) will be hoping to add to his tally in inflicting pain on the Phunya Selele while trusted Amakhosi defenders Siboniso Gaxa, Tefu Mashamaite and Eric Mathoho will try and be tight at the back. Under coach Stuart Baxter unbeaten Chiefs have scored 15 goals and conceded three. They have one stalemate. Amakhosi will, however, be well advised never to underestimate Clinton Larsen’s boys as Celtic will come to this match high powered after defeating Absa Premiership defending champions Orlando Pirates 1-0 at Free State stadium last Sunday. Strikers Lennox Bacela and the Nelson Mandela Bay born Siyabonga Nontshinga will surely be hoping to have their names on the scoresheet. Celtic are currently standing at number seven on the log with nine points.
This was also to raise awareness of sports activism as a way to fight against rampant crime in the area. “We are reviving rugby in Walmer Township. We are tired of being referred to as the former greats, because the time is now. We want to do things now, to make a difference in this community,” said organiser Makhaya Jack, a springbok rugby legend who played for SARU. Jack said they followed the example of the Maoris who went all out to revive their game in order to lure the youth to take over the baton. Sports stars were honoured for their achievements, some posthumously. People like Michael Scout (athletics), Tsitsi Sokutu, Khululekile Masiza (boxing), Walter Meleni (Body Building) and Peter Mkata,
Xolile Nojoko, Cheeky Watson, Archie Mkele and Jack were among the 20 legends honoured while different kinds of sports like boxing, netball, rugby and karate were played. “We are taking rugby coaching in Walmer schools very seriously,” said Jack. He added that they were hoping other sports stars of yesteryear would also come forward to assist. SA Rugby Union Deputy President Mark Alexander commended the effort of these rugby starts. “It is encouraging to see a community put so much effort into a project and not merely be content to wait for help from elsewhere. This kind of effort usually inspires and motivates other communities to follow suit and do likewise,’ said Alexander.

Glenville crowned 2012 Engen Knockout Champions
THE fourth leg of South Africa’s premier U17 soccer tournament, The Engen Knockout Challenge, was recently held at Gelvandale Sports Complex where the host club was crowned champion. The under-17 team from the host club, Glenville Celtic FC faced off against Shining Stars FC in what was a very closely-fought final match. Both teams have participated in this tournament for the past four years and faced a major challenge during the match considering the number of talented individuals in their mix. With players like Celtic’s Darren Bamboo, who according to Tournament Director, Elroy Swart is a player to keep an eye on, Shining Stars really had to step up to the challenge. The final match saw equal possession between the two teams but it was Shining Stars’ Buhle Khathe, who stepped forward and scored the first goal in the fifteenth minute of the first half. For the rest of the first half, Glenville Celtic FC tried time and time again to equalize before halftime but their efforts were in vain. The second half saw the Glenville Celtic FC player, Jaundre Jordaan “Rusta”, equalizing the scoring shortly after the start. With both teams failing to score the winning goal during regular time, the match went into extra time. Once again Glenville Celtic FC star, Bamboo, delivered for the team scoring what turned out to be the winning goal and giving Glenville Celtic FC the much sought after title as 2012 champions. Glenville’s
achievement saw them become the second host club champions for 2012, following Bloemfontein’s host club, Grey College’s win two weeks back. Not only did Glenville Celtic Football Club receive a magnificent floating trophy and R10 000 in tournament prize money, they also scooped the individual performance award recognition for Auburn Butler who received the Defender of the Tournament trophy. The winning team not only received recognition for the performance of the players but also for the coach, Jerome Stowman, who received the individual award for Coach of the Tournament. The Fair Play Team of the Tournament award went to Thornhill United Football Club demonstrating that not only have the players displayed impressive football skills throughout this tournament, but that they also participated with great sportsmanship and fair play, values that exemplify the Engen brand. “The Engen Knockout Challenge bears testament to Engen’s commitment to and investment in South African youth football development and continues to encourage players to bring determination and passion to the field of play. “These young talented participants are the winners at the end of the day and while the remaining 15 teams may not have raised that championship trophy, they should all hold their heads up high and continue to live out their football dreams as they have many exciting years of competitive play ahead of them”, commented Brad Bergh, Group Sponsorship Manager of En-
