Italy.

PORT Elizabeth Grade 7 pupil Kamva Apleni, who is a Junior Sensei at the tender age of 12 years, has been chosen to represent his country in Nambia and

Kamva who attends Sithembile Primary School in Zwide township is the Junior Kyu Black Belt holder in karate. A member of the Sicelo Apleni Karate Academy in Zwide, Kamva is actually a First Dan Black Belt, but because of his age he is regarded as Junior Kyu - which is equal to First Dan Black belts among adults. According to his elder brother and Karate World Champion Sensei Nkululeko Apleni, he has the highest ranking bestowed upon a child his age in the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality and the Eastern Cape. “This was made possible by Kamva’s dedication and discipline in training,” said sensei Nkululeko, adding that the young Apleni excels in both Kumite (fighting) and Kata in karate. Kamva has just returned from a trip in Pretoria where he participated in the JSKA Style and won a gold medal. As the karate champion in his division, he will represent South Africa in Italy in May 2014. But before that, Kamva must represent his country at the Zone 6 All Africa Games in Namibia in July. This is after he performed well in Kumite in Durban in All Star Karate where he came second a few months ago. “I love karate. I enjoy training and will do

well in the kumite in Namibia and the Style in Italy,” said a soft-spoken Kamva who also aspires to become a successful businessman when he grows up. Kamva is the toast of the school and his love for the sport and discipline have not gone unnoticed by members of the staff including school principal Vuyo Piedt. “I have noticed how sport instils discipline in our children and our dedicated teachers encourage them to play sports.” Both Nkululeko and Kamva follow in the footsteps of their karateka father, Sicelo Apleni, a sixth Dan Black Belt who started training his children (3 boys and 2 girls) in the garage of his Zwide home. Apleni senior thanked Sithembile Primary School for giving children an opportunity to take part and excel in different sporting codes and said he hoped the metro municipality and big business would support his academy aimed at putting the city on the world map.

Two big dagga busts on Addo road NCEBA DLADLA A dedicated policeman’s hard work and good nose to smell out criminals have led to dagga to the value of more than R2 million being confiscated in two busts in less than a week on the Addo Road. Warrant Officer Jacques Adlem from the K9 Unit in Uitenhage, made the first bust last week Wednesday. Dagga to value of R1,3 million was confiscated and a man arrested. Adlem, who was not on duty when he made the arrest, was travelling on the main road in the direction of Addo (R335) at about 9am last Wednesday when he nottced a bakkie that had been involved in an accident. He pulled off the road and assisted the driver. “The member (Adlem) became suspicious about the load on the bakkie and enquired from the driver about it. He was as-

tonished to discover that the bakkie was stacked with bags containing dagga,” said police spokesperson Warrant Officer Gerda Swart, adding that a 40 year-old driver from Port Elizabeth was arrested on the spot for illegal dealing in dagga. The dagga weighed 685.5 kg and has a street value of R1,3m. The second bust took place on Monday when Adlem and 2 members were on their way to Paterson court. They saw a bakkie being driven recklessly. Since the road was busy they could not make a u-turn immediately. They tried to chase after the vehicle but lost it. Moments later, however, they saw the vehicle standing next to the road abandoned. When they searched through the vehicle they found that the canopy could not open and that it was full of dagga bags. Adlem confiscated the vehicle and 449 kg of dagga with a street value of R900 000.

Municipality is looking for registered owners of completed houses NCEBA DLADLA THE Housing Department in the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality is looking for the owners of newly built RDP Houses to take ownership thereof. The call is directed at people who registered in the municipality’s Housing Waiting List from 2000 to 2005. They are urged to come and check whether their houses are complete, said Municipal spokesperson Mthubanzi Mniki. Mniki said people could go to the 9th Floor of the Mfansekhaya Gqobose Building, that was otherwise known as City Treasurer, or to the Motherwell Sport Centre, just opposite the Algoa Bus Depot in Motherwell, to view the lists of people whose houses had been

completed. “We fear that these houses will end up being vandalised if their legitimate owners don’t come and claim them,” said Mniki, adding that the unoccupied houses were spread all over Nelson Mandela Bay metro while the bulk were in the Chatty area. According to Mniki, Nelson Mandela Bay metro acknowledges a backlog in housing delivery as there are still many people in need of houses. “But we must make sure that we deliver houses to the right people - those who qualify for and will be able to maintain the houses,” said Mniki. Mniki said residents who find their names in the lists should leave their details so that the due processes of housing delivery will be followed to the letter.

New solution for potholes and unemployment EASTERN Cape residents are no strangers to potholes - but an innovative programme by the Department of Roads and Public Works (DRPW) is set on making potholes in the province a thing of the past while developing small business enterprises. The Road Enterprise Development Programme (REDP), launched in March 2010, has been rolling out various roads maintenance projects throughout the Eastern Cape, including everything from large scale reseals and bridge-building to potholes and road failure reliefs. “The Eastern Cape’s roads have long needed attention and the REDP strategically aims to facilitate meeting these ends, in the process developing emergent and small construction firms to build roads under mentorship of established construction companies and engineers,” said Ayanda Vilakazi, Coega Development Corporation (CDC) head of marketing and communications. The CDC is the implementing agent for the programme. The broader community is also benefiting through better road links to health, education, amenities, food supplies and transport routes. In the past year over 25 685 cubic metres of potholes have been fixed throughout the province - either through the process of plugging or base and surface repair. The process of plugging is when a pothole is immediately patched with cold premix. Base and surface repair is when the road layer is removed and a new layer is laid with a new blacktop surface. The REDP sees the dual benefit of roads construction in the Eastern Cape and simultaneous training and development of small micro and medium enterprises (SMMEs). The enterprise development programme targets contractors, material suppliers, quarry operators, plant hires, consultants and mechanics on road infrastructure construction and maintenance in the region. “A simple approach to maintenance and infrastructure upgrade is seeing the creation of jobs and facilitation of skills development,” added Vilakazi. According to the CDC, 80% of the total roads construction projects have been awarded to

small businesses over the past year. A Queenstown engineer, Laciar Wynne working on the REDP, said potholes were a perennial problem throughout the country and that only a complete overhaul of the roads system would address the problem, but added that the REDP initiative was a step in the right direction as an immediate solution. Participants on the project include engineers, contractors, grasscutters, flag bearers and safety officers. The REDP engineers and construction workers repair potholes throughout the Eastern Cape and in the process document the sites of repair to ensure they are monitored. “We are essentially data-basing the state of the roads - but this process is not without its challenges. The reality is that while the repair jobs are well done, it is not long before a new pothole appears directly next to the very area that had been repaired. In time the capacitated SMMEs will be used for a complete overhaul of the Eastern Cape roads network, but for now this approach is the immediate solution.” “The reality is that the Eastern Cape has many arterial routes which are used by heavy vehicles like trucks and the REDP is moving to mitigate immediate problems while creating a long-term solution in the form of enterprises which are empowered to provide the critical infrastructure needed in the province. This approach ensures delivery and high impact skills development,” said Vilakazi.

Communities empowered Motsepe Foundation pledges to protect our children R10 million for Bay community NCEBA DLADLA “IT is easier to build strong children than to repair broken adults.” This was the integral part of the message members of the ACVV PE Noord brought Port Elizabeth communities last week as part of their programme for Child Protection Week from Monday 27 to Friday 31 May. A group of social workers and volunteers belonging to ACVV PE Noord travelled in an open bus from Veeplaas and drove through Sakuba and Njoli Roads towards Ntshekisa and Ferguson Roads to Spar and then Boxer Super Store in Sidwell educating communities about the importance of protecting children. Members of the community were also urged to sign a pledge in support of the initiative and take a stance against abuse. “The aim of the intervention was to empower community members to protect our children,” said ACVV PE Noord Social Worker and the event’s coordinator Nombulelo Nkabalaza. Nkabalaza said their focus this year was on

child suicide. “We realise that child suicide is commonplace in our societies but most people still cannot see the warning signs,” said Nkabalaza. She added that they spent the whole week talking to, especially parents, about notable warning signs when a child is suicidal. “On Tuesday we went to Veeplaas, SowetoOn-Sea, Zwide and Sidwell and gave talks on Life-skills Programmes” said Nkabalaza. They also gave school children lessons on their personal boundaries where they emphasized the importance of saying ‘no’ when they feel their private space is being invaded - by anyone be it a parent, teacher, doctor (outside of a surgery) or friend touching their private parents. ACVV is a Non Profit-making Organisation (NPO) providing social work services and other health related services like HIV/Aids to the local communities. They deal with issues of Child Abuse and Teenage Pregnancy among others, as well as provide programmes to uplift vulnerable older persons from the most disadvantaged communities, according to Nkabalaza.

BILLIONAIRE Patrice Motsepe pledged R10 million for this year through his foundation to be spent towards the eradication of poverty, unemployment and inequality in Nelson Mandela Bay. The spending of the money, earmarked for education, women development, co-operatives, sports, arts and culture among others, will be overseen by the Nelson Mandela Bay Motsepe Development Forum that will be established from different community-based sectors. “We want to help our people so that they can go and fish for themselves and not for them to wait for the fish to come to them. We would like to make them independent and ensure that they grow and become successful,” said Motsepe. “Government cannot deal with poverty, inequality and unemployment alone. Private business must make a contribution. You cannot have a country where people live in luxury while there are others living in abject poverty beside them,” Motsepe added. The Motsepe Foundation Trust is currently busy with a nationwide road show to start the process of distributing R500 million for, among others, education, women development, co-operatives, sports, arts and culture throughout South Africa over the next three

to five years. The Motsepe Foundation identified the Eastern Cape, Kwazulu-Natal, Gauteng and Limpopo as the provinces with the largest populations. Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality Executive Mayor Benson Fihla pledged the support of the municipality for this progressive initiative. He said it was a noble initiative that iwas a major boost and opportunity for exponential growth and sustainable development. “We all know that the challenges of poverty, unemployment, marginalisation and inequality are huge, which require effective partnerships in support of sustainable longterm development projects. “If ever there was a time to act, it is now. Big cities, like the Nelson Mandela Bay, are important engines of growth and provide economies of scale in the provision of services. In addition, in this age of increasing insecurity, inadequate shelter and basic services, we are increasingly faced with the challenge of social and economic unsustainability. “Thus by working together with the Motsepe Foundation and other likeminded social partners, we remain confident that together we can correct and address the challenges confronting us,” he said.

Closure of Koyana Street As part of the Integrated Public Transport System (IPTS) upgrades, Zwide’s Koyana Street will be closed between Sakuba and Qeqe Streets for an extended period. The closure will end by December to allow for the R70 million construction of a dual car-

riageway from Kani Street to Qeqe Street with the concomitant services. Only residents will be allowed to enter the area while construction is underway. Some work will still proceed after eight months but a decision will be taken then how to deal with the impact on road users.

medals for their attempt and Shupi was very pleased. “My boys started from nowhere to finish the league well against a formidable Garette team in the finals last week. Young soccer player included in Ke Yona squad HEILIE COMBRINCK A young soccer player from Molly Blackburn High School in KwaNobuhle might be the next person whose name will be on the list of well-knowns in the sports arena hailing from Uitenhage. Sinethemba Sdeba, a Grade 12 learner, has been included in the training squad of the Nedbank Ke Yona Team which will play against Kaizer Chiefs, the 2013 winners of the Nedbank Cup. Nedbank Ke Yona is a brand new concept which kicked-off during April. Thousands of soccer players between the ages of 18 and 35 years entered the try-outs which were held countrywide with the last try-out on Saturday. The goal of Ke Yona is to “comb the country for raw soccer talent that will contribute to South African professional football”. Out of the thousands of entries received only 550 players per province are selected for regional trials after which only 5 per province are selected for the squad of 45. The final Nedbank Ke Yona team is still to be announced and will consist of 18 non-professional soccer players to take on Kaizer Chiefs. “Sinethemba started playing as a U/11 player for All City Stars. the eye of Highland Spurs’ selectors and then played in junior and senior regional leagues,” said Lindithemba Sdeba, Sinethemba’s brother. “Since his exposure through Ke Yona, several national teams have made contact with him, but we have made no commitment as he first has to complete his Grade 12. Top coaches in South Africa including Clive Barker, have made positive remarks regarding Sinethemba’s exceptional soccer skills. “We want to thank local sponsors Volkswagen Community Trust, Build It and Nando’s for their contribution in developing young players like Sinethemba.” According to Andile Hena, Molly Blackburn soccer Team Manager, Sinethemba is an excellent defender and has been included in the school’s first team for the past four years. “He also is very active on the field coaching his fellow players.” Andile Funani, vice-president of KwaNobuhle Despatch Football Association NODEFA said that all hopes are now on Sinethemba to be included in the final 18 team. He is the only player from this area included in the training squad which will be leaving for Johannesburg on the 14th June.

Kick off for the KIA Street soccer programme THREE years after the FIFA World Cup, soccer is still alive and kicking on the streets of New Brighton, Uitenhage and Zwide among others, as the annual Kia Street Soccer league launched in May. This year, for the first time, the year’s national champions will not only lift the coveted trophy, but will also stand a chance of winning a trip of a lifetime to the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. Sporting Chance, in association with title sponsor KIA Motors, associate sponsor Mille and media partners Supersport Let’s Play, Good Hope FM and Ukhozi FM, will roll out the annual national neighbourhood street soccer programme that will reach approximately 6 000 boys and girls under the age of 13, empowering and exposing them to a brighter future through the valuable lessons of sport. A positive spin-off from the 2010 World Cup Ticket Fund legacy, the KIA Street Soccer programme is the largest of its kind, giving aspiring youngsters from Gauteng, Western Cape, KwaZulu-Natal, Eastern Cape and Free State provinces a large dose of positive and healthy energy, which lingers long past the tournament’s final match. Conceptualised and co-ordinated by youth sports development agency Sporting Chance, the KIA Street Soccer programme, supported by FIFA and SAFA, teaches life skills through the game of soccer to children who need it most and where they need it most. The communities within the 40 participating regions are hampered by poverty and crime, and lack adequate and safe facilities and stimulating after-school and weekend activities. “Sport can be such a powerful catalyst for

upliftment,” said Brad Bing, Managing Director of Sporting Chance. “For three years, we’ve seen an incredible awakening in the kids who participate in the Programme, who often for the first time, realise that they have something of value to contribute and that they matter. As we get closer to the next FIFA World Cup in Brazil, I am sure that the kids on the street will be even more inspired and determined to play their best and in the process, make memories that will last a lifetime.” KIA Street Soccer will hit neighbourhood streets with round robin matches in Johannesburg, Cape Town, Pretoria, Port Elizabeth, Uitenhage, Durban and Welkom. Eight hundred teams of six players each are entered into the regional league. Round robin matches are played for ten weeks, with weekly sessions followed by a week of regional finals. Provincial finals will then be held during August, and the National Championship final will take place in Johannesburg in mid-September. Last year’s KIA Street Soccer programme held its first National Championship in Johannesburg, and the excitement leading up to the crowning of the nation’s best team was sensational, says Bing. “Not only was it a thrilling opportunity for the youth who made it to the finals to experience camaraderie on a national level and the excitement of a championship final, but for many of them, it was their first opportunity to travel to see more of their country, and to make new friends along the way.” Participants in the KIA Street Soccer programme are taking what they’ve learnt on the streets to soccer leagues across South Africa. Says Khotsi Mcondobi, outgoing Coordinator

Asemahle Gunda (10) and Ayabulela Tanda (13) during the Kia Street soccer match held in Zwide Port Elizabeth on May 31, 2013. PHOTO: DERYCK/IKY for the New Brighton region in Port Elizabeth: “we are promoting healthy, brilliant, sharp and skilful players to our under-15 division. With the moves they’ve learnt on the street soccer pitch, like Samba, Show Me Your No, Mjike Jou and Tsamaya, they are not afraid to take on opponents in one-on-one situations. With these skills, together with parents who support them by coming to watch their kids play, these players are really going places.” “It isn’t only the kids who will benefit from the KIA Street Soccer programme,” says Bing.

“Local coaches and co-ordinators were selected from each community and will receive training in coaching and crucial life skills. In addition, a team of 840 is employed on a contractual basis throughout the duration of the KIA Street Soccer programme. A national project of this scale requires a solid team on the ground to run and implement it and we’re extremely grateful to be in the position where we can create employment opportunities for so many members of the communities where the programme takes place.”

Ndlumbini popularly known as Mpumza told PE Express Indaba that his club, called Motherwell Amateur Athletics Club (previously known as South African Professional Athletics Development Club) was established in 2012. To date the club comprises more than 40 members who are mainly learners. Ndlumbini stated that in order to be fully recognised his club should enter 40 or more athletes during events according to Eastern Province Athletics (EPA) regulations.

“We have 30 vests which are worn during the EPA League Races and this leaves other athletes with no kit. Our major challenge is, however, to transport athletes to races, but we keep on going and going. Our athletes take part in road running, cross-country, field and track,” said Mpumza. Ndlumbini’s mission is to prepare top quality athletes and would like to have one or two athletes represented in the national team in 2016 Olympics. Motherwell Amateur Athletics Club takes pride in their EPA 10 km and 21 km junior champion Siphokazi Nojoko. Any Good Samaritan who can make a donation to the club can contact the Motherwell Amateur Athletics Chairman Ndlumbini on 0 073 151 774 or 0 071 929 9896.
