Woman arrested after abduction of twins NCEBA DLADLA A PORT Elizabeth woman was arrested and charged with abduction after eight-year old twins disappeared from their Zwide township home on Monday 26 November. The orphaned girls, Nomasomi and Somikazi Bobi, who are legally cared for by Sinothando Adam (23) were found at Qoqa Street, KwaNoxolo in PE after an extensive search by members of the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit (FCS) in the KwaZakhele and Zwide township areas. According to police, the 30-year old woman who allegedly abducted the twins, claims to be the sister of their deceased mother. According to KwaZakhele police spokesperson Warrant Officer Thembi Gwe, Adam who reported the girls as missing was the children’s legal guardian. Adam told police that on the day of their disappearence, the woman came to her house and demanded to
INDABA EXPRESS REPORTER “OUR sense of anticipation and urgency has been heightened by the fact that the pride of African football nations will kick start and descend on us with all its fanfare on 19 January 2013.” These powerful words were uttered last week by Nelson Mandela Bay Executive Mayor Zanoxolo Wayile at the auspicious 50 Days Countdown of the 29th edition of the Orange Africa Cup of Nations.
take the girls with her. She also asked if they were registered for a social grant and Adam said she was getting R280 for each child. But Adam, who took care of the girls after her own mother died two years ago, was surprised by the woman asking about the grant. Her mother, who knew the girls’ father Mzukisi Bobi, took the little girls in when Bobi died a few years ago. The children were legally given to Adam by the Social Welfare Department when no other relative from either their mother or father came forward to claim them. “We are concerned that this whole thing happens during the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children,” said W/O Gwe. The children were taken to a Place of Safety while the FCS was busy investigating who is the real legal guardian. “Our duty as police is to ensure that children are looked after in the best way possible and in a place where they will not be socially, physically and emotionally abused,” said W/O Gwe.

HUNDREDS of Nelson Mandela Bay residents witnessed a colourful African Traditional Wedding at the weekend as City Press senior investigating journalist Thanduxolo Jika wedded Gauteng’s Flora Sathekge in Zwide, Port Elizabeth. Sathekge works for the soft drinks division of the SA Breweries. Apart from being an award-winning journalist, Jika is also the former Daily Dispatch Assistant Editor and is the son of the Independent Denominations African Ministries Association of Southern Africa (IDAMASA) Bishop Sandile Jika and Linda Jika the District Education Department’s Chief Financial Officer. The wedding was attended by some very influential people in the metro, such as the Nelson Mandela Bay Executive mayor Zanoxolo Wayile, Chief Whip Feziwe Sibeko, Councillors Mike Tofile and Nomonde Mhlobiso, Business Unity South Africa Vice-President - Professionals Motse Mfuleni and Vodacom Eastern Cape Head Teboho Taunyane.
Also present were Cacadu Traditional Chiefs Fuzile Dyani and Velile Mfunda as well as esteemed journalists Sibongile MkaniMpolweni (from eTV), Sabelo Sikiti (The Sunday Times) and Asa Sokopo (You Magazine). “We decided to get married traditionally as we were both brought up in the Western way and would love to have traditional memories to share with our children one day,” said Thanduxolo proudly, adding that he believed it was important that children understand a little bit about their parents’ culture; especially as they too will be brought up in a Western way. “We had forgotten who we are and where we’re coming from. I am so thrilled that our children are taking us back. It’s a mixture of IsiXhosa, isiZulu and sePedi cultures; it was exciting,” said a visibly elated Bishop Jika. “We named Flora Zimasa, the name our Mvulane clan will know her by. We welcome her!” said Jika senior. Jika Jnr, who is a former Ndzondelelo High School matriculant and Rhodes University Journalism graduate, said they would also have a Western wedding scheduled to take place in Johannesburg in 2013.

Helping kids stay safe during school holidays THE long school holidays are almost here presenting parents with a big challenge to keep the kids entertained this time of year. For parents who are unable to take time off work or leave their children in the care of someone they trust, any school holiday brings with it the added stress of constantly wondering whether your child is safe. Mike Byers, Managing Director of ADT Security in the Eastern Cape has some general tips which parents can pass on to their kids. He says it is important that parents make sure youngsters know to keep all entry and exit doors locked and that no-one is to enter the home without their permission. “If you have a home security system installed teach them how to activate and de-activate it and how and when to use other security devices like panic buttons. Make a list of important telephone numbers – including the 10111 number - and show them that it has been placed near the telephone for use in emergencies.” Byers says there are also basic rules you can teach your child to follow if they are leaving home to walk to a friend’s house for a visit. “If you usually drive your child to the home of a friend who lives in the same neighbourhood, rather walk the route with them before they have to do it on their own. Explain that it is

better to walk a slightly longer route down familiar streets, where there is more activity, than taking short-cuts across fields or deserted areas. “On the day, let them call you when they leave home and once they have arrived at their destination. Advise your children that if they do happen to find themselves in an unfamiliar street, they should look out for a police or security officer to help them and never accept advice or a ride from a stranger.” With shopping malls also far busier than usual during holidays, Byers says the risk of your child wandering away from you and becoming lost in the hustle and bustle is higher. In a bid to keep them safe he advises that – as a general safety precaution – you help your children memorise their names, surnames, home addresses and contact numbers for at least one parent: “Teach them that if they become separated from you they should immediately look for mall security and give them that information. If your child is readily able to give them these details, the time taken to track down a parent can be reduced dramatically.” In closing Byers says that educating your children about personal safety is very important, especially when the possibility exists that you may not be able to be with them all the time.

KwaNobuhle R20m VWSA Lovelife Y-Centre opened NCEBA DLADLA THE Multi-million rand KwaNobuhle Lovelife Youth Centre will go a long way in changing the lives of the Uitenhage youth for the better, said Volkwagen Group South Africa Managing Director David Powels. Speaking on Friday during the official opening of the R20m centre in Tize Street, the 19th Lovelife Centre
in the country and fourth in the Eastern Cape Province, following the ones in Bizana, Mthatha and Motherwell, Powels said Volkswagen was committed to the improvement of the lives of the people - their employees and communities around them. “We hope that this centre will have a profound ripple effect on the lives of young people in Uitenhage and the surrounding areas,” said Powels, adding that he was hoping the Centre would impact on more
than 20 000 youths annually. Its youth friendly clinic offering specialised HIV/Aids advice, counselling and support services for teens and parents would be safe haven, he said. “The centre is equipped with computers, indoor ‘chill areas’ and sports facilities for teens,” said VWSA Corporate and Government Affairs Director Nonkqubela Maliza, adding that with its Lovelife managed clinic, people could speak to counsellors about HIV/Aids.
Health MEC Sicelo Gqobana who spoke on behalf of Minister Dr Aaron Motsoaledi who could not come owing to some other government commitments gave a baseline survey conducted by Lovelife to show that there was a huge problem faced by the youth of the area which the centre was aimed at solving. Powels thanked Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality’s foresight in providing the land from which the centre was built. Executive Mayor Zanoxolo Way-

Drama to create awareness about Alzheimer’s disease NCEBA DLADLA A GROUP of young women from KwaNobuhle in Uitenhage will be staging a drama to educate communities about Alzheimer’s disease at Thanduxolo High School, KwaNobuhle this Sunday, December 9. This came about after Lungiswa Xinwa attended a training course about Alzheimer’s disease which was offered by the CMR nongovernmental organisation known as CMR for Christian Social Services. “After receiving training from the CMR, I felt obliged to spread the knowledge to members of the community who do not know much about Alzheimer’s,” said Xinwa, adding that she wrote a 40 minute script and organised her friends to perform it. The six women who call themselves Ubomi Ngumzamo Drama Group offer a 5 minute talk after the drama to explain certain things, according to Xinwa. Named after a German psychiatrist who discovered it in 1960 Alzheimer’s disease is found
mostly in people from 65 years of age and above. There is no cure for the disease and according to CMR Auxiliary Social Worker Thembeka Manono who offers the training, it worsens as it progresses until it eventually leads to death. Some of its symptoms are failure to remember things and peoples’ names, confusion, irritability, aggression, mood-swings and longterm memory loss. According to Xinwa, sufferers could wear clothes upside down, in some cases they might not use the toilet paper in the toilet and cause divisions among their children by saying bad things about one of them. “Many people, especially Africans, do not know about the disease. In some rural areas sufferers especially women can be mistaken to be witches,” said Manono, adding that through the training they are hoping to create awareness about this disease in the wider community. She said people should go out in numbers to watch the drama. Admission is R15.

Two days to kick-off of Sevens party BETTIE GILIOMEE
W ITH all 16 teams of the Nelson Mandela Bay South Africa Sevens tournament having arrived on Sunday, excitement is building up for what is known as “rugby’s biggest party” in the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Saturday and Sunday.
By changing the tournament to a Saturday and Sunday format and keeping ticket prices unchanged, organisers hope to draw capacity crowds on both days and to attract 80 000 fans to establish this tournament as one of the top events on the World Series calendar. All 16 teams are staying at the Garden Court Kings Beach Hotel. On Monday the Springbok Sevens had a walk through at the NMB Stadium while their mascot, Bokkie, handed out gifts to children at the Life Mercantile Hospital. Today at 12.30pm the Springbok Sevens team will have signing session at Cleary Park Mall. Tomorrow at 1.30pm the Springbok Sevens team will be announced, followed by a Springbok Sevens open training session at
3pm at Alexander Road High School. The tournament kicks off on Saturday, 8 December, at 11am and the Cup Final is on Sunday evening, 9 December, at 7.30pm. The trophy presentation is scheduled for 8pm on Sunday, 9 December. The PE Tens final will take place at 8.45pm on Saturday. On Sunday Tag Rugby Under-9 and Tag Rugby Adult tournaments will be held. Apart from excitement and plenty of action on the rugby field, the crowds will also be entertained by local and national bands off the playing field. Some of the hottest local bands have been lined-up to entertain the crowd at the Saturday Concert. The Graeme Watkins Projects and Goodluck are the two major brand attractions, while DJ Ready D will return to entertain the crowds with his skills. Entrance to this event is free for anyone who has bought a match-day ticket on Saturday. Tickets can be booked online through www.computicket.com and at any Computicket outlet.

XI Angels also edged out the gutsy Continental Express 3-2 in their scintillating clash. Fans were not happy when Happy Brothers failed to pitch up for their encounter against Young Neighbours.
