“We have won The Nite Series a couple of times, the Peter Mkata Memorial Rugby Tournament, Coca Cola Competition, the Metro Schools Tournament and the Dennis Botha Competition,” said Pieterse, adding that they also took part in the KZN Rugby Development Tournament and won.

“The township is a gold-mine of rugby talent. Those who have the means must come and support this initiative. I’ve got the plan. I’ve got the passion and will make it work,” said Pieterse.

THEMBELIHLE Comprehensive School from Port Elizabeth beat all the odds and won the coveted South African Schools Team of the Year Award during a Sports Award Ceremony held in Sandton, Johannesburg at the weekend.

An overjoyed Ithembelihle Rugby coach Theo Pieterse who collected the award at a glittering function, relayed how excited they were to be informed of the nomination by SA Rugby Union (SARU) about a month ago.

He said winning the national award has put this school from a disadvantaged community of Nelson Mandela Bay on a higher pedestal.

A passionate Pieterse trains a very dedicated team of rugby players who play under adverse conditions but because of their love for the sport they work hard to achieve everything that looks impossible in the eyes of many.

“The award means that despite coming from a very disadvantaged background, we have overcome,” said Pieterse who is otherwise known as Mlungu (White man) in the township.

“This achievement shows our passion and determination as a school.

This is to prove that one can scrap from nothing and achieve greatness in life,” said school principal Phumla Mavikela who also praised Pieterse for his commitment in helping the children have a better future.

The school also enrols children from other townships, such as Motherwell, Zwide, KwaZakhele, KwaMagxaki and KwaDwesi, be-

The award has caught the attention of people like former Springbok Danie Gerber, Standard Bank’s Lincoln Mali and the officer in Sports Minister Fikile Mbalula’s office Onke Mjo to support the school’s initiatives.

This mlungu has been with the school for the past 33 years. He has fond memories of rugby develop-

ment in the township during the turbulent 1980s and early 1990s in the township.

Pieterse has utilised the expertise of the late former Springbok Solly Tyibilika, among others, to train his team. Former Grey High School student Tyibilika once played against the talented Ithembelihle Comprehensive School rugby team.

Bay TV is going national on DStv NCEBA DLADLA NELSON Mandela Bay’s Community Television station Bay TV will be added to the satellite broadcaster DStv’s bouquet of channels from Tuesday, November 13.

Bay TV will be available on channel 260 on the Premium, Compact and Lite bouquet. This means that people from all over South Africa will be able to view the station’s local programmes and learn more about the people of the Friendly City.

The news of this milestone of the station which has been broadcasting on a free-to-air frequency since its inception in October last year, was announced with much fanfare at Bay TV studios in Port Elizabeth last Thursday.

“The inclusion of the station on a digital platform will make the sta-

tion available to a wider audience, allowing local talent access to a much wider national audience,” said Station Manager Geoff Hookins.

According to Hookins, local viewers will also benefit from better reception. He emphasised, however, that programming will remain focused on and driven by the needs of the local community in the three local languages, isiXhosa, English and Afrikaans.

He said the station will continue to broadcast free-to-air in the Nelson Mandela Bay region and the surrounding areas.

Local business and institutions will also benefit from national advertising exposure at reasonable rates.

“With the country now moving towards digital migration, it’s the beginning of introducing us to a much wider audience. And to grow the station is always our ultimate goal,” said Board member Chairperson Vuyo Mvoko.

Township artists blow Chicago away with their art LOCAL artists Mkhonto Gwazela and Banele Njadayi have just returned from a highly successful trip to Chicago, where they were part of a trade mission organised and led by Tradepoint SA Nelson Mandela Bay aimed at creating a sustainable international market for township fine art.

Tradepoint SA Nelson Mandela Bay showcased the artwork of 15 Eastern Cape fine artists, the culmination of a five-month export project led by Tradepoint manager David Hamer with the support of Carmeni-

ta Redcliffe from the Municipality’s Trade and Investment Team.

Over 160 works of art were shipped from South Africa to be displayed at Gallery Guichard to coincide with Chicago’s “Africa Month.”

The mission culminated in a Heritage Day celebration of the art at the SA Consulate offices where the Consul General hosted the artists and invited guests to an evening of African conversation.

Hamer said, “Our local artists are increasingly being recognised in the international market, and with 40%

of Chicago made up of Afro Americans, the demand for our art is growing across the City. The 160 pieces will sell for almost R1 million; in fact, during our short stay, we sold almost R350 000 of art, which exceeded our wildest expectations.”

Andre and Frances Guichard of Gallery Guichard are actively marketing the South African art throughout Chicago before it goes on tour later this year to Florida and New York.

They have already placed orders for more art work from the townships.

“The response to the artists and

their work has been phenomenal.

Banele and Mkhonto have shared their stories, their inspiration and their lives with the art community of Chicago which has generated remarkable results and added to the growing interest in South Africa and the continent,” said Andre.

After receiving a personal welcome from Mayor Rahm Emanuel, the artists featured in the Chicago Reporter, were interviewed on Radio WVON as well as having their works exhibited for three nights at a concert featuring American singer and

songwriter Prince.

During their time in Chicago, the artists were invited to speak to fellow artists at Chicago State University and addressed school children at The Little Black Pearl School. Their artwork was displayed to art collectors over four nights of viewings in addition to the events organised at the Consulate and with Prince.

“This project has been immensely uplifting,” says Hamer. Our local artists have a real and substantial opportunity to grow their art sales and be recognised as world class. In doing so, this will help to generate employment, sustain communities and generate positive interest in our country.”

“MEMBERS of the South African Police Service (SAPS) will not rest until they arrest those who attack policemen and women,” said police spokesperson Captain Andre Beetge.

This follows the cold-blooded murder of an offduty policeman in a tavern at Ezinyoka in Port Elizabeth on Friday night.

“Constable Lindela Gqaleka was drinking with friends at Khusta’s tavern at about 21:45 on Friday when he went out to answer a phone call on his cell phone,” said Capt. Beetge.

“As he was responding to the call, six gunshots were fired. Two hit Const. Gongxeka in the head

and another two in the chest. He died on the scene,” said Beetge.

Captain Beetge said the motive for the killing was not known but he was quick to add that police were following up on the leads and were expecting an arrest soon.

“We won’t divulge any information at the moment but want to assure the residents that we are following up on the leads.

“However, if anyone knows anything that could lead the police to arrest the perpetrators of this heinous crime, please do let the police know,” said Capt. Beetge.

NMMU students outreach goes beyond call of duty NCEBA DLADLA NELSON Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) students who as part of their studies had to do a community outreach in the township, went beyond the call of duty and made a huge difference in the lives of the less fortunate members of the community in Motherwell.

Working with Student Governance and Development various NMMU Societies donated a container, to the value of R36 000, to be used as a crèche by the Sihlangule Aids Networking Organisation, a NGO in NU29 Motherwell.

The container, which is the result of the students’ fund-raising efforts and artistry, is a modern structure with state-of-the art equipment and books for the children.

The NGO which consists of Lukhanyiso Crèche, a soup kitchen and a garden was founded by its hard-working head Zodwa Plaatjie whose immense love for the community made her a perfect recipient of the students’ generosity.

“We could not believe the place when we

came here for the first time. The shack they used as a crèche needed a lot of work and that called us into action. We were inspired by Sis’ Zodwa’s love and spirit,” said Sandile Mpepo, NMMU Societies Officer during the handover.

Zodwa thanked the students for the donation and her husband for the support.

She said this will make a big difference in the lives of the people she adopted as her family.

“I grew up without parents. My mother died when I was only two days old and my father died when I was ten years old. I couldn’t get parental love hence I always wanted to give love to make a difference in the lives of people,” said Zodwa.

Zodwa also helps the elderly get medication and gives them support and care. For exercise, the elderly look after the garden which provides them with healthy food for better living.

“We managed to get them the infrastructure, but the organisation is still in need of things like food for the kids, volunteers for the soup kitchen and financial support for its daily operations,” said Tinyiko Mathe, a Media Communications and Culture student.

Suspect held after shootout with police in New Brighton NCEBA DLADLA PORT Elizabeth police arrested a 26-year-old suspected of shooting and injuring a police constable in New Brighton township last Friday evening.

According to the police report the New Brighton Police Station based Constable Murcus Nkumeleng was responding to an armed robbery at Singaphi Street when the shootout between the police and suspect ensued.

“The police were attending to a house-robbery. About four suspects allegedly robbed

the owner of clothing, cellphones and an undisclosed amount of cash,” said police spokesperson Captain Andre Beetge.

According to Captain Beetge, there are also unconfirmed allegations of sexual assault.

When they saw the police, the suspects fled from the scene but police managed to corner one. As they tried to arrest him, he fired gun shots and Const. Nkumeleng was wounded in the head.

Const. Nkumeleng was rushed to a PE hospital but was released after receiving medical attention.

According to Beetge, the suspect was arrested and a .38 revolver was recovered.

Art pupils showcase acting talents A few volunteer Gr.8 and Gr.9 pupils from the Walmer High School brought some excitement and laughter to young and old when they showcased a play, “The Mouse and the Kudolion” at Ikhaya LeThemba recently.

Ikhaya LeThemba is a soup kitchen in Walmer Township.

In the play, directed by parent, Phambile Ncayise, the “Mouse” had to be clever to survive threats of a dog, an owl, a donkey and ultimately the Kudolion. It was especially the donkey that had the kids screaming with excitement as he manoeuvred between them on his

Development amateur boxing tourney to unearth young talent NCEBA DLADLA WELLS Estate Boxing Club (BC) held a development boxing tournament at the NU2 Community Hall in Motherwell, Port Elizabeth on Saturday afternoon.

The tournament featuring Good Hope BC, Supreme BC, Motherwell BC (all from Motherwell) Young Champs BC (Ezinyoka), Fighting Stars Academy (Chatty) Kirkwood BC (from Kirkwood) and Mfuzo BC from Grahamstown was organised by former South African Welterweight champion Linda “Black Mamba” Nondzaba, head of Wells Estate BC. The tournament was well attended and in the audience was Former IBF World Mini-flyweight kingpin Zolani “The Tiger” Petelo.

“The reason I am doing these tournaments is to bring back boxing’s glory days. I want these young boxers to be motivated when they see the likes of Petelo who is the former world champion,” said Nondzaba.

He added: “Government always call us former boxers to come and plough back to the sport. This is my way of heeding the call. I’d like to encourage others to do the same.”

Nondzaba thanked Nelson Mandela Bay mayor Zanoxolo Wayile for sponsoring the tournament. “Thanks

to the mayor we’ve got medals - gold for the winners and silver for the losers as well as huge trophies for the best bouts and dedicated clubs that show good sportsmanship,” said

Nondzaba.

Nondzaba also thanked Kraft Foods, Nissan, EC Motors and Color Quest for helping make the tournament a reality.

Romans lose to Valencia SELBY MADIKANE It was a do-or-die clash when Young Romans lost 3-2 to Valencia in their Motherwell Football Association (MOFA) Build It Premier League encounter at NU9 Stadium on 15 September.

Romans drew first blood from Valencia with a goal courtesy of Sihlangule Bolo, but their joy was short-lived when Siphosethu Mabala scored an equalizing goal to make the score

1-1.

Valencia, however, took the lead to 2-1 when Sivuyile Booi unleashed a thunderous shot in the dying moments of the first-half.

In the second half the game produced some fireworks with Valencia kept in their own territory. Sibusiso Mnto pulled a long range shot to take Romans to 2-2.

This goal seemed to provoke Valencia, however, with their diminutive striker Phakiso Rampaleng also scoring a long range shot to make the final score 3-2 in favour Valencia. In another humdinger Tomorrow Stars drew 2-2 with the newcomers Young Ideas.

Newly established club aims high ZAKHELE Football Association (ZAFA)’s newly established club Real Stars has set their sights on finishing in the top four of the First Division League.

According to Stars chairman Elvis Mali, the fundamental aim of forming the club is to fight gangsterism and hooliganism through sport.

“Sport keeps the youth busy and healthy.

Today lots of youth are involved in crime and they do not think of the consequences.

Our committee members dig deep into their pockets for the sake of keeping the youth off the street. We aim very high at Stars and

we would like to finish the league in No 4.

We work very hard to achieve our goal but we do not believe in putting our boys under too much pressure,” said Mali.

According to Mali, one of their biggest challenges was the state of their practice field which is uneven and full of rocks.

Stars have three teams, i.e. the u/15, u/17 and the senior teams.

The club’s committee comprises Zodwa Plaatjie (treasurer), Xola Fihlane (PRO), Nozuko Mpolongwane (General Secretary), Yolisa Mazwayi (Recording Secretary) and Siphenathi Siximba (Trustee).

Madrid loses to Strikers in MOFA Build It League SELBY MADIKANE DESPITE playing their hearts out, Young Madrid lost 3-2 to Real Strikers in their Motherwell Build It Premier League clash at NU 9 Stadium on November 3.

Madrid scored the quickest goal courtesy of Ahlumile Poni in the 45th second of the first half. Strikers appeared to be flat-footed with Madrid knocking on their door. Madrid could have made the score 2-0 in the first chapter but their strikers were innocuous in front of their counterparts’ goals.

In the second chapter Strikers’ coach Thobela Dekeda seemed to have motivated his charges as they were firin on all cylinders.

Loyiso Lloyd Rasmeni headed home Strikers first goal to level the score 1-1.

Strikers piled more pressure and their hard work paid dividends with a goal scored

by Xhanti Cakwebe to put his side in the lead with 2-1.

Madrid replied with a well-taken goal by Melikhaya Nduna to level the matters 2-2. In the last minutes of the game, however, Simphiwe Mtati became the hero of Strikers when he banged a winning goal to make the final score 3-2.
