Mother of abducted baby blames her councillor NCEBA DLADLA

A

N unemployed KwaZakhele woman whose baby was abducted two weeks ago, blamed the fact that she has to live in a “public toilet” and cannot protect her children for the fact that her son landed in the hands of a syndicate involved in baby trafficking.

Nandipha Thindzi (30) whose 7-months old baby Luyolo was allegedly kidnapped on Sunday, April 21, spoke to PE Express Indaba shortly after the baby was recovered. The baby was abandoned by the alleged abductors at the KwaZakhele Police Station last week.

The child who was looked after by her gogo had been allegedly stolen from her home by members of a syndicate who steal and sell babies for cash.

It is believed that this baby was wanted for a Motherwell woman who allegedly lied to her rich husband working in Gauteng that she was pregnant. The thief would have been paid R6 000.

Mother of four children (aged 13, 11, 3 and Luyolo) Nandipha of KwaNdokwenza was happy to find the baby but said the child would not have been involved in such an ordeal had she had her own place to stay.

“The place I live in is a public toilet. It is not good for anyone to live in; so two of my other children are always with relatives and one with social workers,” said Nandipha adding that she feared that the one with social workers was to come back in September.

“This place still has its pipes intact. When it’s hot, you can’t tolerate the stench that comes out of it,” said Nandipha.

Asked whether the municipality was aware of her plight she retorted, “The ward councillor is aware but is not forthcoming with any solutions to my problems.”

He said, “First, the place is a public shower and not a toilet. Secondly, the people who live there chose to do so of their own accord.

They decided themselves to convert public showers into living rooms and we cannot chase them out without an alternative.”

To help them in the fight, this department has signed a 10-year lease agreement with the Department of Education for the unused Sisonke High School in KwaNobuhle, Uitenhage to be used by the Mothers Gift, an NGO that is feeding hundreds of people in this povertystriken township.

The Mothers Gift have about 1 300 volunteers who give Home-based Care to the Orphaned and Vulnerable Children (OVC), the hungry, poor and sick residents of the area some suffering from HIV/Aids.

Sandi said whilst his department was initially concentrated on the development of farms, small-holdings, rural and peri-urban areas, they have realised that there was a lot of hunger in the townships with a very high unemployment rate.

“The Mothers Gift are feeding the people doing exactly what we want to see. We also bought them tools and seedlings to the tune of R72 000 to ensure that they succeed in their endeavours,” said Sandi, adding that the Mothers Gift would use the land to grow vegetables and fruit.

“We are so excited. We’ll use the building to do much more than what the department expects of us,” said Mothers Gift Projects Manager Nontuthuzelo Skweyiya.

She added that with the school building they would start a creche, an after-care to help working mothers, sewing project and arts and

craft centre while continuing with gardening and a soup kitchen.

Mothers Gift Founder and Head Mama Sheila Isaacs was lost for words after the announcement. “The day-care is in my heart. To look after the sickly and to be able to give them food to eat is most fulfilling,” said Mama Sheila.

Her husband Dr Fred Isaacs will be using some of the land for harvesting Pure Herbal Medicine which he uses to heal members of the community.

“Now, you can talk about health issues to someone when there is food on the table,” said Prof. Sandi, adding that their efforts should not be seen as taking away the duty of local councillors.

“It should not be seen as though we are taking away the duties of the councillors. We also expect them to provide funding for farm implements to help communities fight poverty,” said Sandi.

Pupil’s recycling design could save lives A Theodor Herzl High School teenager’s in-

genious idea to turn empty crisp packets into protective ‘space’ blankets will help keep the homeless warm and dry this winter and could even protect them from hypothermia.

The school is running a drive to collect hundreds of large and small empty plastic chip packets, which are then carefully sliced open and patched together to form windproof, waterproof blankets that will retain body heat in the same way that emergency first aid blankets do.

Grade 10 pupil Christie Vaughan (16) had the brainwave after a personal experience with hypothermia after she’d swum the Nelson Mandela Bay Bell Buoy Challenge in Algoa Bay last year.

“After my swim I was disorientated and the paramedics wrapped me in a space blanket.

Within minutes I was feeling so hot! I am passionate about charity and wanted to make a

difference in some way. When I investigated the material that space blankets are made of, I realised that chip packets are made of very similar silver plastic foil. Instead of just throwing empty packets away, we could put them to good use and help people too!” she explained.

A space blanket is a plastic insulating body wrapping which reflects back most of the body heat lost by radiation. It is carried by climbers and mountaineers in case of exposure, as well as by paramedics and other emergency rescue workers.

Christie and her Theodor Herzl school friend Sonali Madhoo embarked on a drive to collect as many packets as possible, with recycling bins donated by Mpact Corrugated set up around the primary and high school for pupils to deposit their packets into. The project has also been adopted as one of Theodor Herzl’s Eco Club’s chief outreach activi-

ties and will contribute to Theodor Herzl’s status as an environmentally aware ‘Green Flag’ school.

The teens have also encouraged other schools to join the drive and plan to consult local communities via the school’s partnerships with Walmer High School and the Nanaga Village near Colchester about the best way to distribute the blankets to the destitute once produced.

“The more chip packets we collect, the fewer pile up in landfills and the more blankets we can make to benefit more people,” Christie said.

Penned and directed by Monde Wani, this 75 minute post-modern story-telling production, which has received rave reviews in countries like America, Sweden, the United Kingdom and Germany, is a historical piece - a celebration of the new South Africa and the dream of a Rainbow Nation.

It is set in pre-1994 about two ordinary South Africans who are lovers - taking us through their journey and expectations of the new South Africa, their hopes, dreams, frustrations and excitement.

Speaking to PE Express Indaba last week, Monde said he wrote this piece of work in

celebration of the life of Martin Luther King.

“It was commissioned by Saint Benedict and St John’s College in Minneapolis, America, to honour Martin Luther King,” said Monde.

But when he looked at the life of Nelson Mandela and the miracle of the new South Africa, Monde saw the same joy and pain that must be celebrated in the two countries.

What makes this story more exciting, according to Monde, he said, “I am telling it with my wife.

“The two actors take their audience to their confidence as they tell the story of their lives with a bit of humour and song,” said Wani without revealing much. He believes this is his best work ever as a playwright, actor and director.

Tickets are selling at R80 at the door. The show starts at 7pm.

Cashbuild New Brighton celebrates opening by helping local schools This Freedom Day, teachers and learners from Jarvis Gqamlana School, Tjaart Van Der Walt School, Kama Primary School and five other New Brighton schools really had something to celebrate.

On 25 April, each of the eight schools received a Cashbuild building materials voucher to the value of R12 000 at the opening ceremony for Cashbuild’s New Brighton Store.

The Cashbuild Art-at-Heart competition entails learners from each school submitting their best artwork to Cashbuild. This artwork is displayed at the ceremony, and then remains on display in the Cashbuild store for the next five years.

Artwork was judged and three winners from each school were named. Winners received Cashbuild Art-at-Heart gold, silver and bronze certificates for first, second and third place respectively. The Manager’s Choice award was also presented to the lucky winner, Kim Jordan from Laerskool Tjaart Van Der Walt for the artwork competition. This award was announced on the day and the winner received a stationery pack and a glass trophy.

Lamani Primary School’s Principal ZK Dolonga said: “In an area with high unemployment levels, people think of alternative ways to make money. Certain members of the community steal with the intention of selling.

Last year our school was broken into and a computer was stolen. Now we would like to secure the school by building palisade fencing to close the open spaces where criminals gain access.”

Principal N Ngqawana from Jarvis Gqamlana School said that they were very blessed to have won this competition. “The adults in the community are not working and are dependent on social grants and we are struggling to raise funds to fix the school. Ten classrooms currently do not have electricity – we would like to rectify that. If possible, we would also like to paint the outside of the school and pave the school grounds.”

According to Stephan Mazungula Primary School’s Principal, NP Mjekula their learners come to school hungry every day. They have a gardening project at the school that they have to maintain because it provides for the school’s nutrition programme. They would also like to fix the old leaking pipes in the toilet.

Gertrude Shope Primary School’s Mr N. Mzuzu said “Recently, our 25 metre fence was stolen. We would like to replace the fence to keep burglars out and prevent goats from damaging the school’s vegetable garden.”

Tjaart Van Der Walt School’s Head of Department, Mr Nic van der Walt and the other teachers were very happy about their school’s win. He said, “Over last 60 years, the school has created a culture of working together. Instead of hiring labourers, the staff and the community come together to fix the school.

We have a number of things we would like to do. Our classrooms need a coat of paint, the tennis and netball courts need to be resurfaced and repainted, and the rugby field needs to be remarked. But our main concern is the school’s leaking roof – when it rains, water accumulates and it has caused the metal to rust. Before the roof caves in, we would like to build a pitch roof.”

Young Madrid U-9 lifted the trophy when they beat Shining Stars 1-0 in the finals.

Shining Stars went down 2-1 to Young Ideas in their U-11 finals. It was crunch time when Valencia U-13 pipped Shining Stars 4-3 on penalties following their fulltime score of 3-3 in their finals. Young Romans were crowned champions when they overcame Young Madrid 5-4 on penalties following the fulltime tie of 1-1 during their U-15 finals.

SA mourns the untimely passing of Jabu Malinga NCEBA DLADLA THE South African boxing fraternity is still reeling with shock after the untimely passing of boxing trainer Jabu Malinga on Monday night.

The news of Malinga’s “unfortunate passing after a long illness” was revealed by Boxing South Africa (BSA) Director of Operations Loyiso Mtya.

Mtya described Malinga of Kaltlehong in Gauteng as one of the most experienced and productive mentors in South Africa boxing.

Champions he produced include his sons Vus’umuzi Malinga (former SA Bantamweight and current World Boxing Council (WBC) International Bantamweight champion, former SA Welterweight and World Boxing Union (WBU) Welterweight champion and former Lightweight champion Patrick Malinga.

At the time of his passing, Malinga was the mentor of KwaZulu Natal’s current SA Welterweight champion Nkululeko Mhlongo in his Soweto gymnasium.

“It is with sadness that I have learnt of (Jabu) Malinga’s untimely passing.

He was a great man,” said Nelson Mandela Bay BSA Service Provider Mthunzi Mapitiza.

Mapitiza said Malinga was in the league of great trainers like Sy Khumalo, Norman Hlabane and Loyiso Mtya who could take a boxer from nowhere and make him a quality champion.

“We’ll remember Malinga’s great works in boxing,” said Mapitiza, adding that during his era, even if a boxer was not known in the Eastern Cape, if he was trained by Malinga “we knew he was very good. The man knew the basics.”

Goals and red cards galore when Movers beat Valencia SELBY MADIKANE IKAMVA Movers continued with their winning ways when they thumped Valencia 5 – 2 in their MOFA Build It Premier League clash which was played at Motherwell NU 9 Stadium last Saturday.

Movers were awarded a penalty which goalkeeper Mandilakhe ‘The Black Cat’ Dlamini squeezed into the far corner. Valencia were also awarded a penalty which Lelethu Dyasi converted to level the score 1 – 1.

Dlamini missed the second penalty but Movers moved ahead 2 – 1 after a goal by Bonani Moyikwa. Valencia’s equaliser came up with Sivuyile Booi to make the score 2 – 2.

Mbongeni “Dangerman” Yako struck three goals and there was big drama when three Valencia players were red carded for remonstrating with the referee and rough playing.

Earlier on Valencia were unfortunate when their goalkeeper and star striker Thabo Moremi sustained serious injuries which ruled him out of the game.
