Pedestrian fatalities a grave concern NCEBA DLADLA

M

destrians.

INISTER of Transport Ben Martins this week revealed startling statistics that the biggest number of deaths on roads over the Easter season was that of pe-

He said this was followed by passengers who did not use safety-belts. Initial trends indicate that pedestrians continue to be the main victims of the fatalities occurring on secondary road routes. In a statement issued by the Transport department the minister noted the heightening of traffic volumes and the need for the promotion of pedestrian safety. In the most recent incident, five young men from Arcadia died on Sunday in a horrific car crash near the Kempston Road offramp on the N2 when the car they were travelling in allegedly had to swerve to avoid a pedestrian who had run across the road. The pedestrian was also killed in the accident and the body was mutilated to such an extend that by Monday neither sex nor age of the pedestrian could be determined According to Martins, the Department of Transport is engaged in ongoing education and awareness campaigns on road safety throughout the year. Martins said the Department of Transport, working with provinces, the department’s agencies, transport stakeholders and the general public, will continue to implement programmes aimed at promoting the safety of pedestrians, passengers and freight on the road. “Promoting road safety remains one of the key priorities of the Department of Transport; hence our interventions will continue to be implemented throughout the year.” “The Department will continue to prioritise the construction of pedestrian bridges, sidewalks and speed calming measures such as speed humps and rumble strips in rural areas and townships. The Department will also introduce measures aimed at reducing fatalities caused by stray animals.

“From the 6th -12th May 2013, the Department of Transport will participate in the UN Week to promote the safety of pedestrians,” said Martins. “This is indeed a national problem,” said Eastern Cape Department of Transport Communications Director Ncedo Kumbaca. Kumbaca said to curb this problem his department has formed Community Road Safety Councils which comprise local councillors, chiefs, church leaders, taxi and bus operators and other interested parties to address the problem.

Kumbaca said schools form scholar patrols and also work with district officials, members of the SA Police Service, Traffic Road Safety officials and Community Police Forums (CPFs) in their endearvour to educate communities about road safety measures. “But more work still needs to be done,” said Kumbaca. According to Nelson Mandela Bay municipal spokesperson Thubanzi Mniki, the municipality had a Road Safety Office that goes around to factories, community halls, schools, pre-school and any place where people gather to teach peo-

Ward Councillor asks residents to be patient NCEBA DLADLA ALLEGATIONS by residents in Ward 28 that their Councillor Buyelwa Mafaya did not care about them, are “mischievous and untrue”, she told PE Express Indaba on Thursday. Members of the Kwajijana community in Veeplaas, Port Elizabeth called PE Express Indaba to complain about the terrible RDP houses in which they live due to shoddy workmanship. They said this action was prompted by their councillor’s inertia. They accuse Cllr Mafaya of being invisible and not quick to take action. According to the residents, water seeps in through the walls and roofs of zinc that are falling apart during rainy days. Some houses have no windows while some have unfinished toilets.

Strong winds don’t make things easy for them either. Some people are suffering from diseases like TB, they claim. “We thank our government for taking us out of shacks, but the RDP houses we received since 1998 are no good. They are more likely killing us,” said Sibingelo Mguga (36) a married father of one. Mother of six Noluthando Tose (49) complained that her house became soaking wet after the Easter weekend’s rains. “And this has become life for me and my children. I am suffering from TB as a result,” she said, adding that she told Cllr Mafaya about this but was not getting any assistance. Unemployed Nosipho Njalo (44) who stays with nine children (four of her own and her late sister’s five) said they are forced to sleep in one room because the other room could fall in at any time. She complained that rain wa-

ter came in from holes around the room. “There is also the danger of children touching electrical wire and being electrocuted,” said Njalo pointing at the crisscrossing electrical wires around the house. “I feel for the residents and am aware of the problems they are experiencing,” said Cllr Mayana when contacted, adding that she understood their frustrations. “But I profusely deny allegations that I do not care. Since I came into office in May 2009 I do speak to the residents regularly about what is happening in the area,” she said. The last time Cllr Mafaya addressed the residents was with members of the Housing Development Agency (HDA) and the municipal Human Settlements officials on February 13th. Cllr Mafaya said the company that was employed to do a feasibility study of the area, took their time to bring their findings which pointed out that the area was congested and infested with multiple problems that would require some residents to be relocated. “Their response was too slow, I admit. We have also had challenges of political instability in the municipality for some time now which adversely impacted on service delivery. We now have a new mayor and a city manager. I want to say to the residents we’ll work together to find a solution to their problems,” said Mafaya. In her parting words, Mafaya added, “I do care. As a councillor I’d like to leave a legacy and will never abdicate my resposibility to serve the community with pride and diligence.”

NMB children have big plans for their futures Nelson Mandela Bay children, it seems, not only love education, but also know exactly what they want it to help them achieve, as PE Express Indaba’s NCEBA DLADLA discovered when he asked a couple of 5 to 13year old pupils what they would like to become when they grow up.

Lithemba Mbula (11) a Grade 6 pupil at Charles Duna Primary School in New Brighton would like to become a doctor. “I’d like to help sick people,” she said, adding that she knew Dr Mantshiwo who helped sick people in his area.

“I’d like to become a scientist. I’d like to build new things,” said Lukhanyo Madinda (12) a Grade 7 pupil at Diaz Primary School in Algoa Park. Although he admitted not to have seen any scientist before, he said he would like to see himself being one.

Khayakazi Tinise (11) of Motherwell, a Grade 6 pupil at St Teresa Primary School in Korsten would like to become a fashion designer or a chef. “I like designing and cooking,” she explained.

A 12 year-old Sesethu Gxogxo who goes to Isaac Booi Primary School in Zwide said, “I’d like to become a nurse. I want to help sick people just as Babalwa Mbeki, my neighbour and nurse at Dora Nginza Hospital, KwaZakhele.”

But Yamkela Tinise (6) of Motherwell who attends Grade 1 at Enqileni Primary School wants nothing else but to become a man. He said, “I’d like to become a man. I want to go to circumcision school to be a man when I grow up.”

“I’d like to become a journalist. I like to read news for SABC3,” said Sinamava Jibiliza (11) of New Brighton, Port Elizabeth, a Grade 6 pupil at Kabega Primary School. PHOTOS:NCEBA DLADLA

“I’d like to become an engineer because I saw what engineers do and fell in love with it,” said Asemahle Potwana (13) who is in Grade 7 at Isaac Booi Primary School in Zwide.

“I’d like to become a doctor to help HIV positive people get ARVs,” said Themba Ngqungwana (13) a Grade 7 pupil at Malabar Primary School in Malabar.

Free swimming lessons at Zwide Swimming Pool NCEBA DLADLA ZWIDE Township residents have developed a big passion for swimming, thanks to the life guards at the Zwide Swimmingpool in Tunyiswa Street. The pool was opened last year by the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality. It is open seven-days a week from 10am until 6pm. In an attempt to attract more black people to swimming to reduce drowning incidents, the Zwide Lifeguards have developed the Learn to Swim course which is aimed at those who do not know how to swim, as well as beginners, said Xola Ndzotoyi, a life guard. “We decided upon this programme, which we offer free of charge, in order to help our brothers and sisters to master the art of swimming which is not only for sport, but also good for our health,” said Ndzotoyi, adding that they have since noticed a huge interest in swimming among the township folk.

Ndzotoyi said that disabled members of the community were also welcome to join the Learn to Swim Program which takes place every Monday to Friday from 6pm 7pm. According to life guard Amanda Witbooi, many township schools send about 20 pupils a day for a 30 minute period to learn to swim. Witbooi, who is a qualified life guard who learnt to swim as a Sundays River Primary School pupil in Kirkwood many years ago, believes there is so much value in swimming. “Swimming is exercise that keeps you fit and healthy,” she said, adding that she is proud that she is able to earn a living doing what she loves. “We also have a baby pool which is ideal for children from ages 2-6 years,” said Xhanti Fulani, adding that they don’t only teach children to swim but they also monitor their progress. Admission to the swimming pool is R4 for children and R7,50 for adults.

Moms get tips on balanced lunchboxes on tour of Woolworths WOOLWORTHS recently held the first of its dietitian-led store tours in Port Elizabeth through the food market at their Greenacres branch focusing on tips for packing a balanced lunchbox providing nutritional advice for parents of school-going children. The tour was led by Cindy Chin, the new registered dietitian at Woolworths, who works together with a team of three other dietitians. Cindy holds a Bachelor of Science Degree from Wits University and a Bachelor of Science Medical Honours in Nutrition and Die-

tetics from the University of Cape Town. She is also a mom of toddlers and knows the struggles parents face to ensure that their children’s nutritional needs are met. “One of the biggest obstacles parents face is a busy lifestyle and not enough time to plan nutritious meals. Another barrier is people’s perception that healthy food is expensive, which in fact it isn’t. Children’s fussiness adds to these problems too,” said Cindy. According to Cindy, children should, however, not be forced to eat foods they do not like. “Food and eating are associated with cele-

bration and should not be a source of punishment for a child. Meal times should be relaxed and enjoyable”. “Rather encourage them to try new foods. Let them eat just a bit of the food. Toddlers take about 10 to 15 times before they accept a new food taste. Parents should not give up after the first two attempts,” said Cindy. Cindy says the first step to educate one’s children in good nutrition is to involve them in the shopping when possible. “Give them a choice between two fruits for example. This will empower them to make a choice while you give them guidance in choosing healthy foods. Sweets should also not be banned, but allowed in moderation.” While busy lifestyles don’t always allow for a leisurely breakfast, Cindy says it is an important refuelling meal to start the day for growing bodies, which should be a good source of fibre and dairy. “If your kids don’t have time to eat breakfast at home in the mornings or are not hungry that early, make smoothies for them with fruit and dairy, or yoghurt which they can eat and drink on their way to school,” she said. Children should also have routine dinner times. “If they don’t finish their food because they don’t like it and come to ask for food later that evening, make sure that they understand mom’s kitchen is now closed. Always keep healthy snacks in the fridge, such as yoghurt, and fruit and finger vegetables with dips which they can help themselves to and will tide them over to breakfast,” she said. Feeding a child is as easy as pie - or pasta. Cindy likes to hide mashed up butternut and cauliflower in her children’s pasta dishes. Some of the Woolworths’ dinners for children also contain vegetables that are mashed up, like sweetpotato, butternut and carrots. . The Woolworths’ Mom’s tours are part of the Making the Difference Educational Programme run by Woolworths. The tours are hosted in partnership with the Sports Science Institute and its dietetic practice, Shelly Meltzer & Associates. The tours cover three topics, “Balanced Lunchboxes”, “Quick &

Easy Meals for the Whole Family” and “Brainfood for Exams”. These will take place at different Woolworths’ stores nationally during the year and are open to customers and parents of learners from participating schools, as well as the general public. The tours are free and can be booked as space is limited. Contact Amanda Mhluzi on 0 021 407 2307 or at amandamhluzi@woolworths.co.za

Kids enjoy library fun and learning over holidays NCEBA DLADLA NELSON Mandela Bay school-going children were kept busy during the Easter Holiday and they enjoyed it! The future leaders used the study break as the break to study as they were both entertained and educated with activities ranging from handwork, treasure-hunting and story time at 14 municipal libraries around the metro. The children ranging in ages from 5-13 years also had fun with Bellino the clown - all thanks to the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality Programme. Working under the theme “Easter” the little ones made an Easter Bunny and hunted for

Easter eggs at Algoa Park Library while kids at the Allanridge Library had time to tell stories and make a chick card and Easter Bunny. The 6-12 year olds had dot-to-dot drawing and colouring-in before making an Easter Angel at Elukhanyisweni Library. At KwaDwesi and KwaNobuhle Libraries they made paper plate stegosauruses as well as a dinosaur door hanger. Community Library Assistants like Yonela Skotoyi in New Brighton Library and Bongiwe Mavaleliso in Motherwell Library had their hands full with little children during their three days of education and fun. “It was nice working with the children. They enjoyed themselves and are very good listeners,” said Skotoyi.

Sanlam executive returns to Cowan High School to give back THE Sanlam Foundation visited Cowan High School in New Brighton, Port Elizabeth yesterday, where Sanlam’s Chief Executive for Group Market Development, Temba Mvusi, presented items requested by the school as part of the Sanlam Backto-School Executive Project. The Sanlam Foundation Back-to-School Project is a programme whereby Sanlam’s Executive Committee members give something back to schools they attended or other schools they have identified. Each executive will present learning support materials to their specified schools, as requested by the school. Sanlam Foundation entered into partnership contracts with the schools similar to the one with Cowan High School, through which funding is made available for the needs identified by the schools. Now in its second year, the Cowan High partnership has facilitated the provision of a rainwater harvesting system, which has helped the school to collect its own water- up to four 10 kilolitres (kl) reservoirsand has alleviated the water shortages they had experienced previously. In the second phase, which will be presented formally next week, Cowan High has done renovations in various sections of the school. They include plumbing (geyser, toilets, seats, cisterns, and basins installation), painting of ablution blocks and ceiling repairs. “I’m pleased that we are going back to my Alma Mater to present this second instalment of our project. We believe these facilities will assist to provide the teachers and learners with a conducive environment, so that they can focus fully on effective teaching and learning,” Mvusi said. Employee interaction with the Back-toschool Executive project is championed by Sanlam’s senior executives’ involvement where the Sanlam Exco members are taken back to their Alma Mater. This CSI vehicle is a long-term investment into our nation’s future. “Sanlam’s business is focused on long term relationships based on trust, and our contribution to the development of education at this and other schools through the

Sanlam Foundation, is part of building and strengthening those relations for the mutual benefit of the communities in which we operate and for ourselves,” said Mvusi. The Sanlam Foundation’s Executive Back to School initiative was launched during 2011 Nelson Mandela Day in Cape Town. The project strongly supports the Foundation’s strategy which is focused on education. The Foundation’s programmes focus on financial literacy; environmental

education awareness; HIV/Aids education; Maths, Science, English and Accounting. Other schools which have recently benefited where Sanlam’s Exco members have participated in the same project are: Goudini High School (Sanlam Personal Finance Chief Executive, Lizé Lambrechts), Nelspruit High School (Johan van der Merwe, CEO of the Sanlam Investment Cluster), Calvinia High School (Heinie Werth, Chief Executive: Sanlam Emerging Markets), Assumpta High (Sanlam’s non-executive board member, Manana Bakane-Tuoane) and Silverton High in Pretoria (Kobus Möller, Sanlam Group Financial Director).

What amazed the fans was the manner in which Lion City dominated their counterparts but they could not penetrate their defence. Sakhile “Leds” Nkewana scored Real City’s second goal. After Nkewana’s goal, Real City were reduced to nine men following the red cards flashed by referee Mkhuseli Douze to Nkewana and Lifa “Cena” Teyise. But the drama did not deter Real City from accomplishing their mission as Zukisani Vayo banged the third goal to put his side 3-0 up. Lion City’s goal came courtesy of Thamsanqa Gwabeni. Urgent amateur boxing meeting called NCEBA DLADLA

metro.

THE Nelson Mandela Bay District’s Department of Sports, Recreation, Arts and Culture in conjunction with the Municipality’s Sports and Recreation has called a meeting for all interested parties to discuss the future of amateur boxing in the

The meeting, which will be under the auspices of the Nelson Mandela Bay Amateur Boxing Organisation, will be held at the Town Hall in Despatch this Sunday, April 14, from 12.30pm, said the department’s Assistant Manager Mwelase Mbox-

ela. Mboxela said they were expecting every official or structure representing boxing in the metro to attend the meeting. “We are also expecting club managers, trainers, boxing veterans and anybody else with an interest in boxing to attend the meeting as we are going to talk about the plans to develop the sport in the metro,”

said Mboxela. Mboxela was, however, quick to add that this being a Sunday, the meeting would be short as it would be giving a report back on some of the presentations boxing stakeholders made in a boxing meeting held at the Wolfson Stadium in KwaZakhele last December.

Bay boxers to show their mettle in East London fight NCEBA DLADLA TWO Nelson Mandela Bay boxers Siyabonga Blaauw and Mzuvukile Daniels, who are fighting under the banner of Silindokuhle Boxing Promotions, will be expected to shine when they participate in a tournament in East London on Saturday 21 April. The duo will be the undercard of Andile Sidinile’s Sijuta Boxing Promotions bill headed by an eight-round Junior Lightweight fight between the vastly experienced Themba Tshicila and Xolisani Ndongeni, a hot prospect at the Mdantsane Indoor Sports Centre. Flyweight Blaauw will engage the Number 8 South African ranked Flyweight Makazole Tete over 8 rounds in the main-supporting bout while Daniels of KwaNobuhle will oppose Siphosethu Mvula who is rated at No. 9 in the country’s Junior bantamweight, said an elated Silindokuhle Boxing Promotions boss Sibongile Nkebe. Speaking immediately after Boxing South Africa (BSA)’s recently sent circular he reminded boxing licensees that the contracts boxers signed this year with promoters should be over 12-months and allow boxers a maximum of four-fights and a minimum of two fights. “I have negotiated the fights and the purses for these two fighters and I am satisfied with the deal,” said Nkebe, adding that the fights will put the duo in line for greater things in their respective divi-

sions. “I am very hopeful that this highly talented duo will show their mettle against hard opposition from East London,” said Nkebe who is still asking BSA for the reason why an active and winning Daniels who was rated number six in the country was taken off ratings. “Otherwise Daniels must beat Mvula to show that he is currently one of the best junior bantamweights in the country,” said Nkebe.

Despite the bad weather conditions both sides played their hearts out with Stars Bonginkosi “Harris” Mqongozi opening his account from the penalty spot. However Liverpool player Ncedo Tayi equalised for his side to make the score-line 1-1. In the dying moments of the game, Lunga “Mshokobezi” Ceza shocked Liverpool as
