Local girl chosen for Oprah’s school NCEBA DLADLA
T
HE 15-year old Vuyokazi Hlwatika of Uitenhage has been accepted as a student at the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls. Vuyokazi of Bauhinia Street, Rosedale, who is known as Vuyo to family and friends, will be studying Grade 10 at the famous United States TV-host’s academy in Johannesburg from next year. Vuyo will be part of the third group of girls drawn from across the country to study at the academy which was first opened in 2006. The second group matriculated at the school a week ago. “This is a dream come true for me. I am so excited to be selected to join the academy,” said Vuyo, showing PE Express Indaba the letter of acceptance from the institution’s head, Anne van Zyl. The youngest daughter of the late Reverend Madoda and Thembisa Hlwatika is a born leader and has served in many leadership positions. She is a former headgirl of Convent Primary School and member of Riebeek College’s Learners Representative Council (LRC). She aspires to become a Forensic Scientist
- specialising in blood splatter pattern analysis - which she hopes to study at UCT or at an American University. She attributes her success to being ambitious, goal-setting and hard working. Vuyo decided to join Oprah Winfrey’s academy when she saw the advert in a magazine at the school library only two days before the closing date. “There was no way I could cut out the advert in the school’s magazine, so I told my mother about the advert. We quickly bought the magazine and emailed the application from an internet cafe,” said Vuyo proudly. She had to write three tests and was interviewed before she finally received the letter with the good news. Her mother, Thembisa, a former teacher, thanks God for being a true saviour who answers prayers. “Vuyo likes school. I believe that as a disciplined hard worker she is going to be successful at the academy. I brought my children up with Christian values and respect,” said Thembisa. Vuyo’s eldest sisters Nozuko (20) is studying Business Management Diploma at Varsity College in Cape Town while Nolubabalo (19), a former Miss PE Teen, studies BA Corporate Communications at the same institution in PE.

Top music acts for ‘Friendly’ Arts Festival THE inaugural Ebubeleni Arts Festival scheduled for December 29 in Nelson Mandela Bay Metro, boasts a strong and exciting lineup of national and local artists, with the aim of making this an annual event.
This is because we have the necessary capabilities and capacity to present a very successful event,” said the show’s producer Tembi Mahambehlala. “We felt PE deserves a signature event like this. For a long time PE has been a spectator while other major metros in the country host annual events of this nature boosting tourism in those regions. We want this event to contribute to job creation in the region as we all know how dire the economy is in the country, especially in this region,” said Mahambehlala. According to Mahambehlala, the line-up was deliberately designed to have a crossover look and appeal so as to promote social cohesion while
Ebubeleni means “friendly” and is a reference to PE being known as the Friendly City. It will be held at the Heatherbank Sports Club in Walmer. Among the national acts are the Parlotones, Stimela, Zonke, Theo Kgosinkwe, Toya Delazy, AKA and MiCasa; while five local acts and bands will also perform. “We have been carefully planning this event for the past five years and feel the time is right to stage it now.
attracting a broader audience. Mahambehlala’s experience includes working at big Festivals, such as the Standard Bank Joy of Jazz, Macufe, Diamonds and Dorings and the Tribute Concert at Moretele in Tshwane. Ebubeleni Arts festival might turn out to be the last show in South Africa for popular rock band the Parlotones before they relocate to the US. Another coup for the show organisers is Zonke, who despite being one of the top-selling artists in recent times, has not performed in her hometown of PE since she came to fame. It has also been decades since Stimela set foot in the Bay and members of the group have expressed ex-
citement returning to perform in PE after a long absence from these shores. Ebubeleni Arts Festival is a homecoming event with a picnic feel and strives to provide entertainment for the people of Port Elizabeth. “We also want to position the event as a yearly get-together affair for Eastern Capers who work and/or study in different parts of the country. The festival provides an opportunity for old friends and former schoolmates to meet after a long time. “Those that are not from PE are encouraged to embrace the event as part of the reason to holiday and spend part of their festive season in the Friendly City,” said Mahambehlala.
“Ebubeleni means friendly. PE is known as a welcoming city because of the hospitality of its people, even towards strangers.” Small businesses will also have the opportunity to put up their stalls and trade at the festival. Those interested can book their stalls with Nolwandle at 0 082 639 7940 or email a request to nmtshagi99@gmail.com. Gates for the festival open at 1pm and the show starts at 2pm. Tickets are R120 for ordinary tickets and R150 for Golden Circle tickets and are available at Computicket and Shoprite Checkers. No tickets will be sold at the gates. , Like Ebubeleni Arts Festival on facebook and follow them on twitter @Ebubeleni_Fest.

Mayor’s early Christmas presents for Nelson Mandela Bay Children
THAMSANQA MBOVANE MORE than 2 000 excited kids attended an early “Happy Christmas Party” last Friday at the Nangoza Jebe hall in New Brighton, Port Elizabeth. These jovial kids were invited by the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality (NMBM) through ward councillors and were selected from all
over the NMBM townships and the Northern Areas. They received free gifts, toys, sweets, food and soccer balls and warm hugs from the municipal officials, ward councillors, community workers, teachers, Father Christmas and the Mayor. With over 200 T-shirts being distributed by the Motsepe Foundation, the project was the brain child of the NMBM and the Motsepe Foundation. NMBM Executive Mayor Zanoxolo Wayile said children deserved to be given
lots of love and not to be abused. “We are saying today viva oonomgqusho, viva, and down with child abuse, down!” He stressed that the “marriage” that has been started by the NMBM and the Motsepe Foundation is going to last for ever. Sandile Langa from the Motsepe Foundation said: “We are delighted to be able to work hand in hand with the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality and we hope from now on we will work together as partners.”

ST JOSEPH’s Roman Catholic School had a touching service during the final assembly in the school hall to bid farewell to the school’s Grade 7 pupils. The pupils will be starting a new academic year at high schools of their choice next year and principal Holly Ellen reminded them al-
ways to remember the good ethos the school taught them. Each pupil received a candle to light and symbolise the light that Jesus brings. The pupils said how much they are going to miss the school establishment, their lovely teachers and fellow pupils. Asked about the final assembly, one of the pupils Zipho Dladla said: “It was special, and a little bit touching. I am so attached to the school.”
Qhamani Pre-School graduate toddlers and create Aids awareness A GROUP of 19 Qhamani Pre-School toddlers in Zwide Township graduated last Friday to start formal education at a primary school next year. “Out of the 62 children we have at the school this year, we are graduating 19 as they have finished their school preparatory lessons and of course have reached the age from which to start formal education,” said Qhamani Pre-School principal Nonzame Mlonyeni. Held to coincide with the World Aids Day Celebration on 1 December, guest speaker Nomkhitha Sankani used the event at Ekuphumleni Old-age Home, where the crèche is based, as an opportunity to talk to the parents about HIV/Aids negative effects in education.
Sankani, who is a Grade R teacher at Sithembile Primary School, said there was a high rate of absenteeism from teachers as well as pupils as a result of the HIV/Aids pandemic. Sankani told parents that it was important that they sought help from relatives and supported groups if faced with a sickness that resulted in their not being able to let their children go to school. “We also asked parents not to discriminate against children whose parents are HIV positive. It is wrong and the child might not be infected. At school we teach children from a young age about protecting themselves against blood (transmission),” said Sankani. Mlonyeni thanked Ekuphumleni management and the parents of the school for their support and commitment to education. She said it was Sithembile, Nkuthalo and Mnqophiso Primary Schools that benefit from admitting their pupils. eksklusief aanlyn by

Umhlobo Wenene’s Lelika Yehova ihlabathi at Nangoza Jebe Hall NCEBA DLADLA UMHLOBO Wenene FM’s religious programme LelikaYehova ihlabathi, which is broadcast every Thursday from 9am to 12 noon, will be broadcast live from Nangoza Jebe Community Hall, New Brighton, Port Elizabeth on Thursday 19 December. This was announced by the show’s presenter Eugenia Nomthunzi Vuza who is otherwise known as Mama kaMa-Asi to the more than 1,5 million listeners of this popular radio station. Vuza said Umhlobo Wenene FM has been inviting different churches to the studio during the course of the year. This time around they wanted all churches and interested individuals to go to the hall and be part of the programme. Church leaders and pastors were also expected to attend. “Le nkqubo yethula imithwalo; inika ithem-
ba (the programme helps the people offload and it gives hope),” said a former educator Vuza who boasts more than 20 years’ experience behind the mike - touching lives and making the difference. This being the festive season, the awardwinning Vuza, a member of the Dr Simon Gqubule Methodist Church under Rev. Mzi Buyeye in KwaMagxaki said they were inviting men and women from different church denominations to join them as they would be praying for a drug-free and peaceful festive season. “We’ll be praying for peace, prosperity, miracles and wonders for those who are broken and abused, those who are in need, who are jobless and don’t know what they are going to eat with their children during this Christmas time,” said Vuza. People were urged to come early and be seated by 8am. The Inath’iNkosi Gospel Group will spice the event with live music.
