UMAN Settlements officials in the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality and members of the South African Police Services (SAPS) met residents of Motherwell on Monday to discuss ways in which housing delivery problems facing the metro in this area can be solved. This is following an act of illegal land invasion by hundreds of angry Ward 54 residents under the leadership of the SA National Civic Organisation (SANCO) on Friday. Acting against the court order issued to them in December last year with regard to illegal land invasion, they brought building materials and started building shacks on the municipal land. “We are sick and tired of waiting for the municipality that does not care!” claimed the residents, adding that if they did not get proper answers this time around, they would not vote in the 2014 National General Elections. “These people are renting backyard shacks. They have been waiting for houses since 1999 and have been put on the waiting list but sent from pillar to post since then,” said local SANCO Chairperson and leader of the invasion, Siphiwo Dayimani. According to Dayimani, the majority of the homeless people SANCO was trying to defend

They have been waiting for houses since 1999 and have been put on the waiting list, but sent from pillar to post since then.” SIPHO DAYIMANI – SANCO CHAIRPERSON had children and were dependent on social grants and therefore were unable to get housing subsidies or bonds. He said they took the action even though they knew it was illegal, as a last resort. “Meetings we have had with the municipality, mayoral committee and human settlement officials do not bear fruit,” said Dayimani. Dayimani said they want houses now and will oppose any attempt by the municipality to remove them from the area. “This place is near Coega IDZ, and it is near clinics and schools for our children. We’ll resist any plans by the municipality to remove us from the area,” explained Dayimani.
NMMU’s highflying First XV, the Madibaz, have won three consecutive home games and are hoping for great home support on Monday, March 18 when they take on the team of the University of Pretoria (Tukkies) in what is their biggest chance to date of making the semifinals of the University Competi tion. NMMU is presently fourth on the log. Seen here is NMMU’s eighth man, Timothy Agaba. PHOTO: DUIF DU TOIT (GALLO IMAGES)

Women unite in prayer for peace, freedom NCEBA DLADLA NELSON Mandela Bay women believers gathered at the Presbyterian Church at Magaba Street, Zwide Township as part of Zwelonke Women – to pray last Thursday. This prayer meeting was organised by the Inter-Denominational African Ministers’ Wives Association of Southern Africa (IDAMWASA) – a national event where women across the length and breadth of the country and the world prayed for peace and prosperity, equality and freedom for all. IDAMWASA president Christina Jika spoke under the theme: “I was the stranger and you welcomed me.” Women from all church denominations sang and prayed together to show that the church – the body of Christ is one.

Local businesses receive capital investment INDABA REPORTER ENTERPRISE development organisation, The Hope Factory, last week awarded capital investments to 30 entrepreneurs in its programme. These recipients have all recently completed The Hope Factory’s full- and parttime programmes in New Business Development and Equipping. Said Ashley Murray, Mentoring Manager at The Hope Factory, “These capital investments are designed to assist these entrepreneurs take their businesses to the next level. Combined with the on-going business and financial mentoring they receive, these investments will help them to continue to grow their entrepreneurial companies.” Siya Tsewu, owner of Siya’s Gardening Services, will receive a marketing start-up pack that includes a set of business cards and from March he will run his business out of
The Hope Hub – The Hope Factory’s business incubator based in North End, Port Elizabeth. Last year he received grass cutters and a lawn mower which has seen his business grow significantly and he’s been able to offer his customers a more comprehensive service. “The investments I have received from The Hope Factory have helped me to become financially sustainable and to finish my studies. It has also meant that the business has been able to penetrate a much wider market in Port Elizabeth, and for me to employ four people. I am very grateful for this opportunity,” said Tsewu. Similarly Betty Magele, the owner of AE Maka, is starting a hat making business. She will be receiving a domestic sewing machine, a domestic overlocker and a table and chair. “I am so excited about the machines I have received. This is my time to shine!” Maragele said.
Stern warning to parents after rapes The South African Police Service would like to ask parents never to leave their children alone during the day when they are at work. Also when a group of children are playing ensure that there is always adult supervision. Parents must never let their children go with a stranger or even with a family member without their permission or supervision. Parents must always know where their children are and with whom. Over the first weekend in March, two incidents of rape occurred in the Joubertina and Humansdorp areas. In the first incident, a 4-year old victim was taken from her house by a family friend to Tietie se Kraal

in Twee Riviere, Joubertina where he raped her. According to police information the community heard her crying and called the police. The 17-year old suspect was arrested and appeared in Joubertina Magistrate court last week. The case was postponed until 18 March 2013 and he will remain in custody. In the second incident, a 6-year old girl was playing with other children at their house while her parents were at work. It is alleged the suspect, who is her uncle, raped her in the house. The victim reported it to her aunt who phoned the police. The suspect (41), was arrested and appeared in the Humansdorp Magistrate Court last week.

Residents, metro meet over land invasion Continued from page 1 . . . “Our councillor (Aaron Nyikilana) does not care. Our government does not care. The ANC does not care,” said Sholden Qashani (72) who has never owned a house. A disabled Bonelwa Vellem (43), who is a lodger, complained that she has been on the waiting list forever and does not know what to do to get a house of her own. Municipal spokesperson Kupido Baron has, however, denied allegations that the municipality does not care. “We care. We have been experiencing challenges with housing delivery, but it is not true that we are not delivering houses. We do!” said Baron, adding that he sympathised with the residents but asked that they exercise a little patience as the municipality was working around the clock to ensure that services are delivered to the residents. “We are, however, against any move by res-

Teachers trained to address early childhood development

TINNEKE GOEDHALS SMSPortal has partnered Early Inspiration Training (EITP) in an attempt to combat weak early childhood development in Walmer Township. EITP is a training programme for teachers designed for current or prospective practitioners in underprivileged areas who deal di-
rectly with children aged between birth and six years. There are 48 early childhood development centres in Walmer township, with 109 teachers. SMSPortal funded 12 practitioners in 2012 and has recently supported an additional 24. The training is also in collaboration with KICK, a local NPO, which is looking to build
14 early childhood development centres in Walmer township. Lauren Stretch, from Early Inspiration says, “Not only do we create an awareness of what to learn, but develop an understanding of how children learn. Those enrolled need to be working in early childhood centres, and upon completion are recognised as top practitioners in their community, proving outstanding results in child development, ensuring school readiness.” This highly interactive programme, which costs R7 300, is run over eight months, and requires up to three days in the classroom enabling an understanding of child development as well as acquiring the new skills. Mentoring is also an important element of the programme, and ensures guidance and support for enhancing development, assessment, community involvement, writing, reading and understanding texts, as well as interacting with young children. Students never pay for the programme; they are all funded by corporate organisations. Early childhood education in the Eastern Cape has been targeted as a priority sector. There are 4.4 million babies and young children in South Africa and according to the Education White Paper 5 on Early Childhood Development (2001:2), 40% of young children in South Africa are exposed to harsh living conditions, neglect and a lack of stimulation. As a result when children enter formal schooling in grade one, the fundamental concepts of learning are not developed, causing children to drop out of school and in many cases repeat grades. That is why trained teachers within this sector are so important, and something Early Inspiration aims to improve.
Career Expo for learners held this week REPORTER AN exhibition focusing on career guidance and resources for school children is held from today (Wednesday) until Friday at the Feathermarket Centre. The Working World Extravaganza (WWE) is a comprehensive career guidance and skills development exhibition. Entry and all career resources at the expo, including guidance counselling and a DVD seminar, are free of charge to learners. The WWE programme provides career and study decision support, as well as knowledge and an opportunity to network with various tertiary institutions, corporates and prospective employers. Organiser Wellington Jansen of Inkanyezi Events said the exhibition would bring together unprecedented numbers of corporations and educational institutions to share resources with up to 15 000 learners at 200 schools over three days. While many corporates will exhibit alongside local and national educational institutions at the expo, the Nelson Mandela Bay Business Chamber’s Top 40 under-40 nominees will interact and share resources and advice with school prefect or leadership teams that have been invited to a special session at the expo. The show runs from 9am to 3pm each day. For more information contact Inkanyezi at 0 041 363 0310 or email support@inkanyezi.co.za.

Aspiring priest of Motherwell Nosiviwe Ntoni speaks her mind in poetry NCEBA DLADLA NOSIVIWE Ntoni of Motherwell in Port Elizabeth is a young lady with big dreams. PE Express Indaba was impressed by this lass from Inkqu Street, NU12 reciting her poetry at KQ FM. Nosiviwe chooses her words wisely to communicate a message which she says comes from the heart. “I like reading the bible and it is from this book that I get my inspiration,” said Nosiviwe, who is also inspired by poets and musicians like Lelethu “Poetic Soul” Mahambehlala and “mama Jessica Mbangeni”. The duo, she said, speak their mind to touch the nerve. The 22 year-old Nosiviwe, who was born in KwaKoni near East London, passed matric at Good Hope High School three years ago. She writes more, she explained, when she is stressed by this life’s challenges “especially about being at home doing nothing whereas I’ve got this dream of studying and making it in life.” After passing matric Nosiviwe, who wanted to study theology, was enrolled to do Introduction to Business Studies at Lovedale College but only managed one semester because of lack of finance, she said. “My dreams of becoming an ordained pastor are stalled for now but I will continue preaching and praising God through poetry and song,” said Nosiviwe, a member of the Seventh
Day Adventist Church. “I’ve been to Fort Hare Radio Station in Alice, Mdatsane FM and recently KQ FM to show my talents. Soon, I’ll be going to Umhlobo Wenene FM to say to South Africa, ‘Here I am Mzantsi, I am a dreamer, help me realise my dream, if anyone out there is listening,’” said Nosiviwe.

Idols’ Khaya to perform in PE on Friday TANYA VAN ZYL FANS of last year’s Idols SA winner, Khaya Mthethwa, should get their groove on as he is set to rock the stage this Friday at The Boardwalk. Khaya’s first-ever performance in Port Elizabeth was scheduled for April 1, but Algoa FM managed to arrange with M-Net for Khaya to perform in the Friendly City this Friday. He will be joined by the four Port Elizabeth contestants who were chosen in a pre-audition for Idols season 9.
These four, Christina Williams (20), Thuba Myeki (22), Edward Allen (26) and Amanda Antony (19), will go through to audition for the Idols judges at the Sandton Convention Center. The show will start at 6.30pm. The show is free and open to all. ) Khaya popped in to the PE Express office last week to chat to us about his life after Idols and his current success. For the video interview, go to our website at www.pe-express.co.za and look under Multimedia – Video Galleries.
Comedian Monde Wani looks right inside the church to find laughter NCEBA DLADLA NELSON Mandela Bay actor, writer and director Monde Wani will present a stand-up comedy at Way of Life Christian Centre in KwaMagxaki, Port Elizabeth on Friday 22 March and Masakhisizwe Community Resource Centre, KwaZakhele on Saturday 23 March. Admission will be R60 per person each day. The show on Friday will start at 6pm whereas it is scheduled to start at 4pm on Saturday. Wani, whose Rivonia Trial stage productions have toured countries in Asia and Europe, said he was invited by the ministers of both churches, Reverends Katsha and Ntanjana respectively, to present his Christian Comedy to their congregations. “The reason is simply that I am a Christian, an artist and entertainer who has just discovered this love of comedy which of course has always been there in the Christian community,” said Wani.
Christian comedy is growing fast in South Africa in recent times and Wani believes it is time that Christians fully appreciate the power of this art form - because laughter is the best medicine, he said. “When I read the Bible, I see comedy. I see the preacher, there is comedy staring me in the face. Pastors, ushers, and singers in the church provide us artists with great material for comedy,” said Wani. He added, “It is also important that we South Africans do not always take ourselves too seriously in church - that we fail to see that God has a sense of humour.” South Africans have a lot to laugh about, according to Wani. “Within the context of scripture they can get a comedy that is clean but with a very strong message,” he said. Wani will feature his daughter Sivu (11), a singer who is part of some of the acts in the production. Sivu won the Mnet sponsored Mzantsi Magic Talent Search Show (in music) in 2012.

KwaNobuhle’s Makhosonke Zwengu is new EC Middleweight champion NCEBA DLADLA MAKHOSONKE “The Machine” Zwengu won the Eastern Cape Middleweight title on points from the defending champion Masixole Botile at the Babs Madlakane Community Hall, KwaNobuhle in Uitenhage last Saturday.
In the main supporting bout, up-andcoming prospect Mzwanbantu Dabaza beat the talented but ageing Vuyo Toyise on points over 6 rounds in the Junior Flyweight division. In the main preliminary bout Lungisa Jikani beat Ndudumo Lolwana on points (6 rounds Lightweight) and Lwandile Phillip beat Nwabisile Colani (Flyweight) also over 6 rounds. In the other bouts, all over 4 rounds; Dumisani Tshokela stopped Zimkhitha Lane KO3; Xolisa Kana beat Sinethemba Stali on points; Siphosethu Ncisane beat Mzwamadoda Jibiliza on points; Ayanda Fatyi beat Luthando Calata on points and in the only female bout Nomampondomise Xotyeni drew with Asandiswa Nxokweni in the Lightweight division.
Their 10-round fight was the main attraction of Andile Siqwepu’s Andile Boxing Promotions 9-bout bill. The bout failed to live up to expectations. It looked more like wrestling than a boxing match with Zwengu of KwaNobuhle being the only one putting up an effort for a fight. The taller Botile, of Walmer township, gave his title on a silver platter. Botile did not use his reach advantage. While he tried to confuse Zwengu by twisting from orthodox to south-paw stance from the third round he could not exploit it. It was the second time that the two pugilists locked horns with Botile twice coming second best. Judges, Prince Mbambaza, Nonelwa Fukutwa and Lizo Jordaan scored the fight 99-90, 99-91 and 98-92 respectively in favour of the new champion Zwengu. “I am happy I won. Botile tried to confuse me but he was no match on the day,” said a jubilant South Africa’s No.2 rated Zwengu who was risking an opportunity to fight for the SA title by challenging Botile. But a lot is needed from Zwengu who has just joined a new stable, if he wants to conquer the world. And, his manager concurs. “We still have to work hard to beat Christopher Buthelezi for the SA title,” said Sipho Nogampula and Silindokuhle Boxing Club trainer, Mlawuli Nawule, agreed. Madibaz campaign for home support
Yenza isicelo semali mboleko!
RUGBY is on the rise in the region and it’s not 10 000 supporters (named Dibas) for this game only the Southern Kings that people should be proud of. The Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University’s (NMMU) high-flying first XV, The Madibaz, have won three consecutive home games and are hoping for great home support on Monday, March 18 when they take on the team of the University of Pretoria (Tukkies) in what is their biggest chance to date of making the semi-finals of the university competition. NMMU is presently fourth on the log – their best performance so far in the six-year history of the student competition. The team has this week launched a campaign visiting schools in the metro in an attempt to get
in the NMMU Stadium at the university’s South Campus. It will be their final home game of the Varsity Cup season. “The support we have received has been incredible, but we’d like to make it even better for the final home game,” said Madibaz coach Brent Janse van Rensburg. “Rugby is on the rise in our province. We know what support can do for our team,” added Brent. There are various incentives for spectators, all mirroring the 10 000 Dibas call. These include R10 000 up for grabs in the kicking competition at half-time and R10 000 for the best NMMU residence supporters. Entry is free. Kick-off is at 7pm.

Kwaru are EPRU League Champions SELBY MADIKANE KWARU proved beyond any doubt that they are a force to be reckoned with following their 38-19 victory over Motherwell United during the Eastern Province Rugby Union Ladies League Finals at Zwide Stadium last Saturday. Khayalalethu Mambulu scored Kwaru’s unconverted try to put her side 5-0 ahead. Kwaru increased their lead to 12-0 following a try scored by their fullback Unathi Mali which was converted by flyhalf Siphosethu Tshingana. Mali scored her second try which Daphne Scheepers converted to make the interval score 19-7 with Kwaru taking the lead. United flyhalf Ntombiyethu Fiti kept her side’s hopes of taking the honours high when she scored a try under the poles with Kula converting it to make the scoreline 19-14. Mambulu, however, scored another try under the poles which Tshingana converted to put Kwaru in the lead of 26-14. Nodefa 2012 season winners NCEBA DLADLA THERE was jubilation and excitement as the Nobuhle and Despatch Football Association (NODEFA) Executive handed over football kits to the U-17, U-13 and U-11 winners at their offices at Jabavu stadium last week. “The kit was owed to the clubs who are last season’s winners,” explained Nodefa president Monde Mhletywa. He said these winners received only medals and trophies during the 2012 season. Outstanding winners were the U-17 team which was selected to take part in the Northern Areas Tournament and the ladies team which participated in the Local Football Association’s (LFAs) competitions where they

Cosmos too strong for FC Moscow SELBY MADIKANE YOUNG boys were embarrassed and taught some free soccer lessons during the Walmer Football Association (WAFA) Marina Sea Salt Premier League games in Walmer recently. Young Cosmos were too strong for FC Moscow when they walloped them 8-1. African Aces were rampant in their 6-3 victory over Brazil United, while Walmer Stars demolished Young Aces 7-1. Teenagers FC should go back to their drawing board following their 4-1 defeat to Peace United. XI Experience seemed to be inexperienced following their 5-2 loss
to Young Aces. WAFA Marina Sea Salt Premier League rookies Morning Stars made their presence felt in a 3-1 win over the experienced Real Madrid, with Seaview United getting a hiding of 4-1 from Mabayibone Strikers.
