Star boxer dies in poverty NCEBA DLADLA
Y
OUNG people who become superstar celebrities in the blink of an eye because of their skills in their fields of play should learn that fame does not last forever and one can just as quickly go from hero to zero. Members of the boxing fraternity in Nelson Mandela Bay were saddened to experience this closer to home after the death of former South African Junior bantamweight champion Nkosana Vaaltein who died last week at his New Brighton home in Port Elizabeth, after a long illness. He was 37 years old. He died on Saturday, May 4 at the RDP home of his grieving mother Julia Skweyiya-Vaaltein (60) who was looking after him while he was sick. Because Vaaltein has not made any provision for his funeral he might have to receive a pauper’s burial if his mother does not receive financial support to bury him. Former boxers who meet at his home tomorrow (Thursday) have agreed to pay R100 each to assist with the funeral arrangements. But this will surely not be enough. A good Samaritan must come to assist this grieving family. Vaaltein started boxing in 1988 in Dimbaza and turned professional in Port Elizabeth in 1993. His 12-year career spanned 32 fights, 17 wins (3 KOs), 9 losses and 6 draws. He was trained by Lindile Shushwana with whom he won the national title against David Vinger at Graceland Casino, in Secunda Mpumalanga on 22 November 1998. Former SA Bantamweight champion Phindile Gaika also trained Vaaltein early on in his career.
Vaaltein, whose star was shining brightly at this stage, left his home in Port Elizabeth in 2000 to box in East London. In 2003 he moved to Gauteng to fight under the tutelage of decorated trainers Mzimasi Mnguni and former world champion Dingaan “The Rose of Soweto” Thobela respectively. “He was a boxer since he was a child, but boxing has done nothing for us as a family,” said Julia. According to Julia, when Vaaltein won the SA title he went to live in a flat in town before moving to East London and Gauteng. Boxing South Africa (BSA) Regional Manager Mthunzi Mapitiza said, “I do not know what happened to Vaaltein. He left Port Elizabeth while still at his prime in boxing and I never saw him again. “I only knew that he was in Gauteng but when he came back home in December (2012) he was looking very sick and without money.” Julia said that as he was her child she had to take care of him. She said that she tried in vain to have her son included in her insurance policy. “A nursing sister at the clinic he attended regularly for medication advised just recently that I register him for a social grant with South African Social Security Agency (SASSA), and we were told to wait for three months, but this was too late,” sobbed Julia. Julia is not financially able to pay for his burial this Saturday 18 May.
The funeral of Nkosana Vaaltein will be held at Pentecostal Church, KwaZakhele, this Saturday.

Bay social housing project best in country BETTIE GILIOMEE
THE Walmer Link Social Housing Project,
which was officially opened by the minister of Human Settlements, Tokyo Sexwale, last week, has been lauded as the best social housing project in the country. This award was made by the Social Housing Regulatory Authority (SHRA). Social Housing is affordable rental accommodation for households earning between R2 500 and R7 500 per month. The rentals are on a sliding scale based on household income and range from R560 to R2 107 for a bachelor unit, R606 to R2 250 for a 1-bedroom unit and R657 to R2 250 for a 2-bedroom unit. While all phases of the Walmer Link Project have been completed and 293 of the 347 units already occupied, the developers Imizi Housing Utility are hard at work on their next social housing project which will be situated in Restitution Road, Fairview. According to Anthony Ngcezula, CEO of Mizi Housing Utility, they have started with the earthworks at the Fairview site and building will be done in phases over the next 18 months. “Some of the units might be ready for occu-
pation by as early as December, if the weather does not interfere much with construction,” said Ngcezula. According the Ngcezula, the Walmer Links Social Housing Project is a collaborative effort of Imizi and the developer, The Home Market, both non-profit companies and for public benefit, the National and Provincial Departments of Human Settlements, the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality and the General Motors Foundation South Africa. It is the first greenfields social housing project in Port Elizabeth. “The Walmer Link Social Housing Project is a tale of perseverance and just reward for the directors and staff of IMZI and The Home Market. After 10 years of slogging away to get its first project off the ground, and to receive this award for it, is testimony that there are people in this city who want to make our city a winning city,” said Ngcezula. “The Walmer Link Social Housing Project demonstrates that it is possible to provide good quality affordable rental accommodation to households that need it. These projects are in good locations and one of their intentions is to bring people closer to their workplaces,

thereby saving time and money,” he said. With regard to safety concerns over Walmer Link being closely located to the Walmer Township, Ngcezula said no break-ins have been reported in the two months since the fitting of burglar bars in all the rental units. “Walmer Link is surrounded by an electric
fence with guards on duty 24 hours. All the units will be fitted with security doors soon. According to Ngcezula they are also in the process of upgrading the security system to a biometric access control system whereby residents will be able to enter and exit the premises by fingerprint identification.

Criminals target shoppers The Police have issued a warning to shoppers to be on the lookout for criminals who operate at shopping centres. According to police spokesperson, Capt. Stanley Jarvis, many cases have been reported to the Mount Road and Humewood police stations where criminals mislead the public with false information about discount prices. Incidents have been reported from shoppers in the North End and Central areas. According to the modus operandi, five women between the ages of 35 and 48 years approach prospective clients at the entrance of these shopping centres and tell them they (the criminals) have a good relationship with either the owner or manager
of a certain shop and they can organise discount prices for whatever they want to buy. They then tell them they are not allowed to go into the shop with any metal-like items such as jewellery, handbags and cellphones, because the metal detectors at the doors will go off as soon as they walk in. They ask the clients to leave their belongings with them. While the shoppers are busy in the shop they disappear. The incidents mainly take place between 8am and 9am, 1pm and 2pm and 4pm and 5pm. The police are asking the public that if they see any of these criminals or have been targeted to please contact WO Louis Meyering on 0 041 504 5000.

Mattera, who was a guest of Thandile Kona, national president of the Muslim Youth Movement of South Africa, visited a number of schools in KwaNobuhle, Despatch and Port Elizabeth to encourage learners to take education seriously. “I visited seven schools and listened to the youth speaking about their needs. These are the people who are going to take over this country when we are gone,” said Mattera, who has dedicated his life to youth development and rehabilitation of ex-offenders. “I spoke to both the Christian and Muslim youth about social justice. I found many to have strong aspirations but also feel the pressure of being young in the changing South Africa,” aid Mattera. “I am going to speak to former president Thabo Mbeki and his wife Zanele, among others, to invest in the youth of Nelson Mandela Bay.” Mattera, who was first classified as Italian and then “coloured” by the apartheid regime, has ties in the Eastern Cape as his Italian grandfather was married to a Xhosa woman from here. His father was born in Gauteng. Mattera has a son in New Brighton, Port Elizabeth. A former journalist and founder of Union of Black Journalists and Congress of SA Writers (Cosaw) Mattera urged especially

He wanted to build a mosque, establish a music orchestra and also adopt Nkululeko High School in KwaNobuhle. He said the school had very high pregnancy, drug abuse and failure rates. He has published an autobiography, poems, books and plays and was honoured with 38 national and international awards. Mattera received the South African Order of Baobab in Gold for Excellent contribution to literature, achievement in the field of journalism and striving for democracy and justice in SA and three honorary PhDs in Literature from Natal University, Wits University and Unisa. According to BSA Director of Operations Loyiso Mtya this is a final notice after BSA opened the licensing window from January 2013 to March 2013 to enable licensees an opportunity to commence with all necessary compliances for registration and renewal of their licences. Mtya said a communique to this effect, was sent out to boxers, trainers, managers, promoters, ring officials and medical practition-
ers in December 2012. “It has, however, come to our attention that, to this day, some of the current champions and contenders have not licensed for the year under review,” said Mtya. Failure to register before the said date will result in champions losing their status and the titles becoming vacant whereas contenders will automatically lose their top ten rating positions. Mtya urged the affected boxers to consult provincial managers to complete all necessary compliances and pay the licensing deposits to BSA if they still want to be recognised as professional boxers in this financial year. – NCEBA DLADLA
