NELSON MANDELA BAY METRO: OOM BEN UPBEAT ABOUT FUTURE

metro.
ELSON Mandela Bay Executive Mayor Benson Fihla and his Mayoral Committee met members of the media yesterday to deliver their plan of action in bringing back order in the
The mayor looked upbeat about the future of the metro and said he was positive about the kind of response his election to office received, the ability of his mayoral team and the capable City Manager, Dr Lindiwe MsenganaNdlela who was appointed to lead and bring hope and optimism to the ailing administration. The mayor was, however, quick to add that he and Msengana-Ndlela had been in office for less than a month and that skeptics should be reminded of that and at least give them time. Oom Ben, as the mayor is fondly known, pointed out from the outset that the multiple administrative and political problems that the municipality faced when he started in his new position on 22 March were no longer there. By the end of June, he said all the vacant Executive Directors positions would be filled. “I am glad that we can report that we are on track to make a marked difference in how business is conducted in this complex but important city,” said Fihla. Together with the city manager, he said, they had started staff imbizos as an interaction with Uitenhage and Despatch employees to see their commitment to the business ethos with which they wanted to run things in the metro. “I was glad to see the commitment of some of our employees and we have noted their concerns,” said Fihla, adding that they would continue with such engagements. “Even though we have many positives to report on, we have also noted with concern the violence in Motherwell,” said Oom Ben, referring to the Ward 54 residents who have been accused of illegally invading land to build shacks and the alleged torching of houses at
Wells Estate. He said a Motherwell Intervention Task Team, led by Councillor Buyile Mkavu and involving Councillors Babalwa Lobishe, Fikile Desi, Wandisile Jikeka and Thembisile Mafana, will drive the process of bringing order to the area. “We are the government of the people, and we are therefore talking with the leaders of
the residents there to find a solution to the problem. “It is in our interest that we lead a stable metro,” said Deputy Executive mayor Chippa Ngcolomba. He said the mayoral committee members had not rested since the Easter period to find solutions to the problems bedevilling Ward 54 residents. The residents’ shacks were burnt

Nehawu members employed at Netcare embarked on a nationwide strike on Tuesday. Members at the Netcare Greenacres Hospital also protested outside the hospital yesterday. Netcare said in a statement on Monday that, where needed, contingency plans have been put in place. According to the National Educa tion, Health, and Allied Workers’ Union (Nehawu), the strike was a response to recent wage negotiations that collapsed. New identity for PE Childline and Family Centre TINNEKE GOEDHALS PE Childline and Family centre - the largest child protection organisation (NGO) in the province - recently celebrated the rebranding and name change of the organisation. The new name is Uviwe Child and Youth Services - Uviwe directly translated means
“you are heard”. The current name change was brought about by two situations happening at the same time. The first situation was as a consequence of disafilliation from Childline SA while the second was the ongoing severity and widespread occurence of child abuse and sexual assault cases in communities. Whilst financial survival has become a day-

and Family Welfare Society in Uitenhage for the benefit of learners who have been struggling to choose the right subjects that propel them to the right careers in life, said Social Worker Nozuko Monde. “Our office realises that learners need the right information in order to make the right subject choices. Otherwise, they
to-day struggle, its programmes remain key to protect the rights of children in the Emtro. The severity and widespread of child abuse and sexual assault requires new, “out of the box” solutions. It is within this context that PE Childline and Family Centre adapted its structure, services and partnerships. “We knew we were the biggest, we knew we were good, but ‘Were we excellent?’ was the question we asked ourselves,” said Okkie Steyn, chairperson of Uviwe. He says having their own identity gives them so much play where they need to go out and help. To assist them with the development of a new corporate identity and new brand strategy they contracted the expertise of Strategy Advertising. The name was proposed by two staff members of Uviwe through an internal branding competition which was won by Nomfuneko Bungu and Phakamile Qobo. Warren Upton from Strategic Advertising, said during the media briefing it was really an honour to work with Uviwe. “They are such a special bunch of people to work with,” he said. The new logo represents a number of fundamental aspects that Uviwe stands for. The colours used are all vibrant, playful and speak of hope for a brighter tomorrow in each child or family that is touched by the organisation. All their services remain the same - it has only been improved. The focus area remains the wellbeing of chil-
dren in every community and the service pillars include: . Champions of children’s rights - Every child is valued in its community and should be protected and nurtured for a better community in the future . Empowering communities - Starting at grassroots and building communities that are economically self-reliant Agents of hope - Passionate about the potential in every child and the ripple effect it has on that child’s community . Accessing new partnerships - Collaborating with the community, other organisations, sponsors and those who share the same enthusiasm for the upliftment of the local community. “We want to continue as champions for children’s rights. We want to stop telling a sad story like others, but celebrate the positive change made in the lives of children thereafter,” says Anna-Louise Olivier (director of Uviwe).
choose wrongly or are forced by circumstances to do subjects that they don’t like and end up failing even to get to matric,” said Monde. To avoid this, Monde together with colleagues Christel Plaatjies and Yolandi van Heerden, decided to convene the event and invited officials from the Department of Education in the Uitenhage District together with Nelson Mandela Bay metro-based institutions of Higher Learning and some
Companies. “The Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU), Midlands College, PE College, Lilitha Nursing College as well as Volkswagen South Africa and Good Year SA will be represented at the event,” said Monde, adding that Algoa Bus Company has offered to ferry the learners to and from their schools on the day of the event. For enquiries people should contact one of the convenors at 0 041 992 1486.

Nelson Mandela Bay youth talk about economic freedom NCEBA DLADLA NELSON Mandela Bay youth shared their views with PE Express Indaba on whether they think that South African youth are economically free. Some believe so, while to some, economic freedom is still a pipe dream. ) “I don’t see economic freedom. Unemployment among the youth of this country is still very rife. There are no jobs; even those who pass Grade 12 can’t find jobs. Our education is for sale and without money you don’t get good education. Where then is the economic freedom?” asked Nonkululeko Mbangi (22) of Khayelitsha in Uitenhage. ) “We are not ecomically free, especially the youth who come from very poor families. You struggle to get matric and you still do not get employment. For me, that’s the reason why there is so much lawlessness in this country. The youth rape and rob even the preachers. While this is not right, poverty is to blame,” said Sibongile Manyathi (25) of KwaNobuhle in Uitenhage. ) “There are chances of employment for young people. People, especially those with experience do get jobs. In my view, we are indeed economically free,” said Zukisani Vayo (22) from Joe Slovo Informal Settlement who works for a firm in Deal Party, Port Elizabeth. ) “To enjoy economic freedom, more attempts must be made to ensure that South African youth get more bursaries, scholarships, internships and employment ultimately,” said Gcobisa Ngoqo (21) of Park Drive in Port Elizabeth. Gcobisa is an NMMU second year Accounting student who has already obtained a Financial Accounting Diploma. ) NMMU Textile Design and Technology second year student, Nohle Ngoqo (19), of Park Drive said, “If there is economic freedom, I

think, it’s not enough because there are not enough jobs and those that are available require experience which the youth in the main do not have.” ) Zwide township’s Mesabisa Marungula (19), a matriculant from St James High School in Korsten said, “There is economic freedom but it’s not enough. Our government must do more. The unemployment rate is still very high, the youth resort to drugs and crime,
thinking it’s an easy way out. There is also a huge problem of youth selling drugs - which is not on.” ) “I don’t see it (economic freedom) because those of us who are working live from hand to mouth. To try and be better you have to enter into debt which makes living even more difficult. Life is a struggle as if we are not free,” said Thembela Makeba (32) of Motherwell township, who does have a job.

Coega helps learners who have to rewrite maths and science THE Coega Development Corporation (CDC) is giving the Grade 12 class of 2011 and 2012 a second shot at success by offering free lessons to learners who are rewriting their final examinations for mathematics and science. On Monday Coega called for applications from learners who are writing the exams in November 2013. The pilot project, launched by the CDC’s Maths and Science Academy, is offering lessons to learners who either failed or fared poorly in mathematics and science under the National Curriculum Statement and who have already enrolled through the Department of Education for a rewrite in November 2013. The CDC has already recruited tutors who will conduct five hour long classes for four days per week from May to October at the CDC’s Human Capital Solutions Building in the Coega Industrial Development Zone (IDZ). According to CDC spokesperson, Ayanda Vilakazi, the project was initiated after the organisation observed that young learners were not able to apply for tertiary education owing to poor performance in their final Grade 12 results. “Some of these learners lack the funds to improve their skills in mathematics and physical science and our intervention is focused on helping them achieve success in those subjects so they can enter higher education institutions and further their careers,” said Vilakazi. “This project is aligned with our approach to improve and facilitate skills development in the region while encouraging interest in the scarce skills disciplines linked with mathematics and science.” The initiative is also linked to the CDC’s drive to increase the number of entrants at ter-
tiary level who enrol to further their studies in science, mathematics and engineering. “Therefore, while the CDC is still highly involved in training initiatives that focus on artisans in particular, we are also concentrating on catching school leavers who need extra attention to reach their potential. The Maths and Science Academy is certainly a step in the direction of a more comprehensive skills development programme.” The CDC runs a number of initiatives which teach or support scarce skills development including its artisan, driver, roads enterprise development, youth academy, scholarship, and internship programmes. Through its human capital solutions unit – which trains 8 000 people in occupational skills every year, provides around 4 000 pupils with career guidance and benefits 500 post-matriculants with its maths and science programme – the CDC has clocked major training successes. Applicants are expected to have passed all other subjects and only those who have written their Grade 12 examinations under the National Curriculum Statements may apply. There are no costs involved other than transport to and from the tutorial venue. The applicant must submit a certified copy of their matric results with contact details to the fax number 0 041 404 7301 or hand deliver to Recruitment and Induction Centre, R102 Old Coega Road, Markman. Alternatively, the application can be emailed to Loyiso Mnci at Loyiso.Mnci@coega.co.za. The deadline for applications is 18 April. Should the applicant not receive any feedback by 23 April 2013 the application should be considered unsuccessful.

at the station. I have learnt from the best. I was inspired by people like Vido Special Makaza, Stan Mosia and you, Tshisa (Nceba),” said Lamani, referring to the reporter who is a former radio announcer at Radio Xhosa now known as Umhlobo Wenene FM.
Lamani highlighted the need for the radio station to be of education and information value to the community. He said his programme tries to close the gap between local councillors and the residents through dialogue. “We also try to explain municipal by-laws
so that people will be informed about their roles and responsibilities in order to act wisely,” said Lamani adding that he dedicates the award to “everybody who supports KQFM radio station”. National public broadcaster Umhlobo Wenene FM won three awards.

Ithembelihle in school rugby tournament this Saturday NCEBA DLADLA SOUTH Africa’s best township rugby school Ithembelihle Comprehensive School from New Brighton will host David Livingstone of Korsten in a Coca Cola Rugby Tournament scheduled to take place at the New Brighton Oval ePakeni this Saturday from 9am. Ithembelihle rugby coach Theo “Mlungu” Pieterse said games will be played between U14 and U-16 teams before the game between the first teams which promises fireworks. Ithembelihle Comprehensive School which won the South African Sports Team of the year award, will also participate in a rugby tournament featuring Brandwag High School and a host of Port Elizabeth township schools
including Thamsanqa, Vulumzi and Motherwell High Schools at St George’s on Saturday 27 April. Matches will be played between U-14, U-16 and first teams. “Everybody is invited to come and witness rugby at its best,” said Pieterse, adding that admission will be free. Ithembelihle has won the Night Series twice, the Die Burger Rugby Tournament, Dennis Botha Tournament and the KwaZulu Natal (KZN) Development Tornament among its many awards. “The school has a dedicated rugby coach and rugby mad learners who register at the school every year,” said school principal Phumla Mavikela when the school won the National Sports Award early in the year.
FUTURE participants in the Spar Women’s Challenge can start their training early following the introduction of the Spar Little Ladies’ Race in Port Elizabeth on May 1. The 2km fun run, which takes place from Pollok Beach in the Summerstrand area, will be open to all girls aged eight years and younger. Participants may be accompanied by an adult woman but no boys or men will be allowed. “This road running festival is strictly for ladies of all shapes and sizes,” said Spar Eastern Cape marketing manager Abri Swart. “It’s a fun and healthy way to say thank you to our loyal shoppers and give back to our community.” According to Swart, the Spar Little Ladies’ Race was the ideal way to broaden the participation base of the event and introduce future customers to the family oriented retail brand. “It’s a very special addition to the Women’s Challenge, which celebrates its 20th anniversary this year.” He said the fun run would take place on the first day of late registration for the 5km and 10km senior events. “This means that moms, aunts and grans can register, collect their t-shirts and support their little ladies all on the
same day. “The girls may run unaccompanied as there will be female marshals along the course to ensure everyone’s safety.” The Little Ladies’ Race follows a circular route from the registration tent on the grassed area, past the old Something Good roadhouse and along the seaside pedestrian walkway before returning along the landside footpath. Swart said all participants, but not their adult companions, would receive special finishers’ medals and be in line for lucky draw prizes. He said organisers anticipated between 500 and 1 000 participants in the inaugural race. Entrants may register at the following sports shops: Brian Bands, The Footballer, Sportsman’s Warehouse and Action Sports. They can also register from 8.30am on the morning of the race. According to Athletics South Africa rules, only girls nine years and older are officially allowed to participate in the 5km race on May 4. “However, if the little ones want to take part in the main event, we do allow them to, provided they are accompanied the whole way by an adult,” said Swart. Nondzaba is the former South African Welterweight kingpin who is determined to see boxing developing in Nelson Mandela Bay to the level where it used to be when the city was referred to as the Mecca of boxing. “We want these young boys and girls to get the knowledge and skill of the

According to Motherwell Boxing Organisation Secretary Andiswa Nobaza the tournament is the last one before talented boxers get an opportunity to get skills training at the EP Command Boxing Academy during weekends. Nobaza who is bringing her club, an all female boxers team, to the tournament is also upbeat about the development of the sport in the area. “We are very excited about the future of our young boxers. NMMU part of new Varsity Sport event JUST when you thought your sporting Mondays had ended, the company that gave us Varsity Cup is now offering us a vibrant televised university sporting contest for athletes, Varsity Sports Athletics. And Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University is among the top university contenders. Starting this past Monday (15 April) in Stellenbosch, the contest consists of nine men’s events, nine women’s events and two mixed relays. It will include medley events in which participants may find themselves racing against the opposite sex but this is all part of the fun of the new competition. “I know that this initiative is not only going to benefit our student athletes but it will also be a huge injection for Eastern Province athletics,” said NMMU’s athletics sport manager Nellis Bothma. A number of NMMU athletes who performed particularly well at the recent under 23 SA Athletics Champs in Pretoria, will be competing in the three-event series around the country. They are gold medal winners Ischke Senekal (shot put 15.26m), Magdaleen Louw (hammer throw 52.52m) and Chad Herman (javelin 74.70m). All three achieved personal best distances and broke Eastern Province records for their own disciplines. Ischke also took the silver medal for discus (48.70m) in another new EP record while Chad qualified for the World Student Games lat-

er this year. “The new competition is going to be exciting because of the various rules for the competition,” says Bothma. Team members, for example, may only participate in one event and one relay, and medley events will mean that men will race against women although distribution of the sexes will be even. The action moves to UJ Stadium in Johannesburg on Monday 22 April and finally to Tuks Stadium in Pretoria on Monday 29 April. The universities involved are: University of Stellenbosch (Maties), University of Johannesburg (UJ), University of Pretoria (Tuks), North-West University (Pukke), University of Free State (Kovsies), University of the Western Cape (UWC) and Tshwane University of Technology (TUT). Varsity Sport, the company behind the successful Varsity Cup competition, introduced Varsity Sport sevens rugby and beach volleyball in December, and will introduce women’s hockey, soccer and netball too. The women’s hockey will start as soon as the athletics competition is finished. “Our mandate is to showcase untapped university talent … and ultimately help to build South African sport,” said former South Africa rugby captain Francois Pienaar who is CEO of the company behind the initiative, Advent Sport Entertainment and Media Pty Ltd. The event will be screened live on SuperSport.
