Bay TV celebrates first birthday with DStv announcement NCEBA DLADLA

ELSON Mandela Bay’s own community television station, Bay TV, is celebrating its first birthday in October on a high note. According to newly appointed Bay TV station Manager Geoff Hookins, there is even more reason to celebrate as they will not only be introducing three new programmes, but will also now be available on DStv from next month. Hookins said he is proud of the role and growth of this powerful medium in Nelson Mandela Bay and Eastern Cape. “We are really celebrating a milestone and the way things are done here at Bay TV, I am sure we’ll grow the station and be there for a long time,” said Hookins proudly. As a gift to the community Bay TV is introducing three new shows to its schedule in October. These are a sports programme, called Match Time, a dance show called Fohloza Dance and a religious debate show called Sahlukaphi (Where do we differ?) To celebrate in style, Bay TV has organised a braai for members of the community at Happy Value on Heritage Day, Monday 24 September. This family outing is offered in association with Nelson Mandela Bay Tourism. Castle is sponsoring the live stage for local artists performing in different genres, including Shoelace, Take Note, Blawa Mafiozo, Azz Veritazz, Nombongo and many more. There

will be braais in the VIP area courtesy of Castle and Marina Braai Salt. Algoa Bus will offer six buses to transport people from various pickup points to the venue. These pick-up points are at Cleary Park Shopping Centre, Motherwell Shopping Centre, Daku Shopping Centre, Babs Madlakane Hall, Njoli Square and 6th Avenue, Walmer at 9am. The proceeds of the event will be donated to a worthy charity organisation.

Well-known South African rapper home to shoot music video PE EXPRESS INDABA REPORTER Well-known South African rapper, iFani, returned to his hometown of Port Elizabeth this week to film his third music video for his latest single, ‘Shake’.

Fans know him for his quirky, catchy songs, especially his hit single, ‘Ewe’, which aired on SABC 1 Live and hit the top of two 5FM chart shows. iFani was born in Umtata but his family moved to Port Elizabeth when he was very young and so he considers the city his home. Keeping his birth name a secret, he says that iFani is a corruption of ‘it’s not the same’ in Xhosa, an adage he lives his musical career by. iFani not only returned home to film his music video but chose to use local professionals to do the job. “I have just been signed by Sony Music Entertainment - Africa and I decided that if they are going to send me out into the rest of the world I want to take my home city with me,” he said. Innerview Productions, a local video production company owned by

Jean Du Toit, were more than pleased to take on the challenge. The world of music is one Jean knows well. He was lead singer and songwriter with popular Port Elizabeth band BGF and then Autonative and is more recently known for his singing and rapping in the ‘dirty south’ band, The Cottonfields. “It has been great working with iFani this week and really exciting to be shooting the video here in Port Elizabeth. We have some incredible outdoor locations in this city and more than enough talent to create an exceptional video.” The shoot has been taking place this week in a number of different locations around Port Elizabeth, including the parking lot opposite the old ice rink. Red Bull turned up on Wednesday to keep the more than 30 extras and crew energised for the long day and night shoot. When asked about how the experience has been, iFani said, “Port Elizabeth has amazed me this week. The talent here is exceptional and the level of professionalism has made it a great experience. I’m so glad to be taking a part of Port Elizabeth away with me.”

SPAR women pamper kids on ladies’ day PE EXPRESS REPORTER SPAR Eastern Cape’s female employees used their annual internal ladies’ day not to pamper themselves but to give back to the community by spending the day at two underprivileged crèches in Nelson Mandela Bay on Friday. The 95 women divided themselves between the Lilitha Crèche in Veeplaas and the Sonwabile Educare Centre in New Brighton, where they entertained the children, cooked them a meal and left behind a variety of educational materials and toys. Speaking at the New Brighton event, SPAR EC human resources officer Uonella Ntsebeza said it was very important for the company to assist organisations in the communities in which it operated. “As women we are caregivers, so for us this just fits naturally. I think this is typical of women – to do something for other people.” Ntsebeza said a lot of work had gone into planning the day, with every employee involved in coming up with ideas for themes and activities. The 110 children at the New Brighton crèche were treated to face painting, a jumping castle and mini-Olympics, as well as a visit from Trolley Man, before enjoying

hamburgers and party packs in the colourfully draped school hall. “At the end of the day, they received back sacks with colouring books, crayons, lunch tins, juice bottles and other items to contribute towards their education.” According to her, the little ones were mostly raised in single-parent families or by their grandmothers, who relied on the child support grant as their sole source of income. “We just wanted to make it a really fun day for the kids. The reward we got from seeing them smiling and happy was just priceless.” Sonwabile Educare Centre principal Zoliswa Nkwalase said she felt very blessed by the supermarket giant’s involvement and looked forward to an ongoing partnership. “Going forward, we’re hoping to assist the school in any way that we can,” said Ntsebeza. SPAR EC creditors manager Zelda le Roux said she and her fellow employees had been incredibly touched and humbled by the experience. “It really gives you perspective and makes you realise that you’ve got enough, so now it’s about finding ways to give back.” Every year, the SPAR EC ladies’ day is held as close to National Women’s Month as company schedules allow.

THE PE Express Indaba correspondent Selby Madikane is a sports fanatic who always likes to be on the ball. And his hard work and dedication is being acknowledged and rewarded. Madikane, an Imbasa Primary School teacher of NU7 in Motherwel, has been awarded medals and certificates as a Sports Reporter by a number of sport bodies from the township. This former Inkqubeka Primary School teacher has also seen his efforts being appreciated at his current school. He has been receiving Trophies and Certifcates for Outstanding Performance since 2005. An athlete of note and member of Willard Batteries Athletics Club who has also played good rugby and soccer, Madikane received Awards from Motherwell Football Association (Mofa) four times, New Brighton Football Association (Nebfa) twice and twice from Zakhele Football Association (Zafa). “I also got a certificate at (Imbasa) school for participating in the Danone Cup,” said a proud Madikane.

This married father of two cannot count the medals he has received as a marathon runner. He still takes pride though in the silver medal he won in the Marina Sea-salt half Marathon - the sport he had to quit unfortunately owing to an archilles tendon injury a few years ago. Madikane grew up following in the footsteps of his older brothers who played rugby for Young Collegiates RFC. He quickly turned to football to don a City Royals FC jersey and then Black Pirates in Veeplaas. “I developed an interest to join the administration as a secretary of

Exciting line-up for Northern Arts Festival 2012 PE EXPRESS REPORTER

JAM-PACKED programme of activities can be expected at the 6th annual Northern Arts Festival held at the Marock Road sports grounds in Sanctor in Nelson Mandela Bay from September 21 to 24. This year there is an entry fee of R5 per person for every day of the festival. The broad spectrum of arts and cultures will come to life as the Northern Arts Festival puts on a show celebrating various forms of art through a variety of activities planned over the four days that the festival will run. The annual Cleary Park Shopping Centre/Northern Arts Festival 5km Family Fun Run takes place on Saturday, September 22, from the Cleary Park Shopping Centre at 7.30am. The route follows through the community of Arcadia, Sanctor and Salsoneville, and ends again at the Cleary Park Shopping Centre sports field (next to Build It). There is fun for the entire family, and the little ones will be taken good care of in the larger than ever before kiddies’ playground. There will be fun rides, face painting, toys, and games to entertain the children while the rest of the family can enjoy the entertainment on offer. The entertainment line-up taking place on two stages at the festival grounds remains a highlight, with performances expected by well-known local artists. The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality is hard at work to ensure that the pilot phase of its Integrated Public Transport System (IPTS) system (IPTS) will be launched in October. In the Pilot phase, the buses will initially follow six routes only. As the pilot phase will soon be launched, and for their own safety, all motorists have been requested by the municipality to refrain from parking in any of the exclusive IPTS lanes. The parade is expected to become an annual feature, and as Paulson says, “To be the biggest parade the city has ever seen!” The parade procession will proceed from Standford Road, into Rensburg Road, pass the former Dower College, straight down Rensburg Road until the four-way stop and left into Esterhuizen Street, and left into Marock Road to the festival grounds. There will be road closures for the duration of the fun run and parade, which is expected to end by 11.30am. Another highlight is the national theatre production, Platform 9, with its all star cast presented by the Northern Arts Festival on Saturday, September 22, at the St Martin De Porres church hall. The celebrity cast includes 7de Laan actor Theodore Jantjies, and Isidingo actor Maurice Paige. The show is produced by 7de Laan actor, Christo Davids. There will be two shows, at 2:30pm and 6:30pm at R70 per person. The popular local production, My Bra se Tjirrie, will also be performed at the St Martin De Porres church hall at 12pm on Saturday at R50 per person. Let's talk about TB

TB is a disease that, although preventable, is still ravaging the people of our city. Over the following few weeks, the District Office of Health aims at sharing certain key information on TB with you. The objectives of these articles are to, primarily, prevent the spread of the disease and, secondary, to advise on how to optimise treatment in order to achieve the speedy cure and recovery from TB for those who have contracted the disease (yes, TB is completely curable). In this instalment, I wish to touch on some general issues. TB is largely preventable, yet in our city we have about 10 890 people on treatment every day. This excludes the 417 patients who are in the 3 TB Hospitals. Why would this be, one wonders? Pulmonary TB (TB of the lungs) is caused by an organism called a TB Bacillus. It is so small and light, that it easily spreads from person to person through the air. That is why we ask people to be aware of when they cough or sneeze in the presence of anybody else. This happens at home, on buses, taxis and trains, in offices and, yes, even in sports bars and shebeens. 3 easy steps to stop the spread of the disease: In past we asked people to just place their hands over their mouths when they coughed or sneezed, but we now ask people to cough & sneeze into their sleeves or into a piece of cloth that will not allow any germs to go out into the open air. Also, open windows to allow fresh air to continuously come into any area you are in. Lastly, make surerd you eat enough healthy food (yes, a healthy body does not get TB as easily as a malnourished body) Next time (i.e. 3 October): how to optimise treatment in order to achieve the speedy cure and recovery from TB. This enabled Northern Lights to acquire a much-needed additional minibus. During the World Cup, CTSA also took the learners to one of the soccer matches in Port Elizabeth. “It was a dream come true for the entire school, and especially our terminally ill children,” said Jacobs.

A BREAKFAST Braai, 5km Road Race, an Amazing Race and a birthday bash at the beachfront are all the elements on the menu for Heritage Day, in conjunction with the Algoa Bus Heritage Day 5km run at King’s Beach. The Run, organised by PEAAC, is held in collaboration with Bay TV and NMB Tourism. It will start at King’s Beach at 7.15am and has a cut-off time of 1hour and 15 minutes. In keeping with Heritage Day, which is also National Braai Day, the first 600 finishers will each receive a medal and a free boerewors roll. For those who would rather compete on a different level, the organisers are also holding their first ever breakfast braai competition to coincide with the run. Teams will compete for R4 000 worth of prizes sponsored by Algoa Bus. The competition categories are for the best homemade hamburger patties and the best breakfast sal-

ad. To add even more excitement NMB Tourism is also holding an Amazing Race which shares the starting point for the 5km Run but kicks off at 9am. This day-long event includes Uitenhage and Schoenmakerskop. Then the action moves to Happy Valley for Bay TV’s first birthday which will be celebrated from 11am with a packed programme of free entertainment. Those who take part in all three events, i.e. the 5km Run, the Amazing Race and the Birthday Bash, qualify to win a trip on a party bus sponsored by Algoa Bus. Schools can win a cash prize of R1 000 for the school with the most bulk entries, provided that a minimum number of 50 children enter. Dynamos did it again at ZAFA SELBY MADIKANE DYNAMOS once again did its loyal supporters proud when they won the Zakhele Football Association (ZAFA) Top 8 Cup Competition following their 1-0 hard-fought victory over buoyant Seven United at their ground on 8 September 2012. Amagugu, as Dynamos are called by its supporters, had in two months successfully defended their ZAFA Knockout Trophy over BUBS. As things stand, Amagugu’s silverware drought is a thing of the past. Playing in front of their supporters in their slaughterhouse, Dynamos piled more pressure and were brimming with

confidence. ZAFA and Dynamos star midfielder Phumlani ‘Bump Dance’ Mnabisa scored an all-important goal in the 15th minute which took his side to victory. United fought back tirelessly but Bump Dance and former Young Professionals experienced mid-fielder Siyathemba ‘Ortega’ were resilient in the centre park and were untouchable. Strikers second-time unlucky again SELBY MADIKANE REAL Strikers fans were disappointed when their side were once again unlucky in their attempts to collect silverware following their 1-0 loss to Tomorrow Stars during the finals of the Motherwell Football Association (MOFA) Welcome Tournament at NU 9 stadium on September 8;2012. Strikers recently also lost 2-1 to Valencia in the MOFA Biyana Top 8 finals.

It was an evenly balanced game, with both sides playing their hearts out. Stars’ skillful player Thabo Jonga sealed the game when he scored the only goal of the match. As a result his side clinched their first trophy of 2012/2013 MOFA Season. In the semifinals Strikers knocked out Tomorrow Stars Reserves 2-0 while Stars beat Crystal Palace 5-3 in a penalty shoot-out after a fulltime goalless draw. Stars collected a R1 200 first prize while Strikers were presented with R600 as their consolation prize.

Windy City blown away by Metropolitan SASFA u/16 Cup action PE EXPRESS REPORTER Staff and spectators were treated to an exciting final in the provincial phase of the Metropolitan SASFA u/16 Cup in Eastern Cape this past weekend. Pangalele Senior Secondary School overcame Joe Slovo High 2-0 in a thrilling final at the NU2 stad-ium in Motherwell. Both Schools will progress to the National Final which takes place from October 2 to 6 in KwaZulu Natal (KZN) this year. Pangalele eased their way through group A with a 4-0 and 1-0 win over Egqili Senior Secondary School and Molly Black Burn High School respectively. In group B Joe Slovo High School beat Manguezele Senior Secondary School 2-1 and also saw to the demise of Samkelwe Senior Secondary School beating them 4-2 in a goal fest. Both Pangele and Manguezele Senior Secondary Schools will progress to the National Final to be played later this year. The competition is made even more special this year as the winning school at the national final will go on to represent South Africa at next year’s International Soccer Federation World Schools Championship in France. “We have seen some good talent on display and we are sure that with the right guidance and coaching, these players can progress to the high-

est level. The Metropolitan SASFA u/16 Cup is so much more than just another football tournament.
