Duty Calls launched for Festive Season safety NCEBA DLADLA

T

HE SA Police Service in Port Elizabeth will receive 17 new vehicles today with the launch of a campaign to ensure a safer festive season, Operation Duty Calls 2013.

The campaign will be launched by the MEC for Safety and Liaison, Helen-Sauls August,

and the Provincial Police Commissioner Lieutenant-General Celiwe Binta, at the Lillian Ngoyi Sports Centre in Kwazakhele. According to Provincial police spokesperson Brigadier Marinda Mills, the MEC is visiting Port Elizabeth to hand over the operational plan to members of the South African Police Service (SAPS) and to inform the public of the SAPS’s state of readiness in ensuring that locals and visitors will enjoy a safe

festive season in the province. Provincial Commissioner Binta will hand over 17 new vehicles to Cluster Commanders, Unit Commanders and Station Commanders. Kwazakhele Community Police Forum (CPF) Chairperson Mawethu Poni said they were concerned by the sudden rise in heinous crimes like murder, rape and domestic violence especially in the Kwazakhele Police Station precinct.

“We want to assure members of the community that the CPF is aware of their fears this season and that with their help the SAPS and the CPF can curb these crimes,” said Poni. The day’s proceedings will include public participation at Njoli Square, a motorcade, a march and a full State of Readiness Parade in front of the Lillian Ngoyi Indoor Sports Centre.
