ANC to meet with angry residents NCEBA DLADLA
T
HE ruling African National Congress (ANC) will be meeting aggrieved Ward 48, 49, 50 and 53 residents in KwaLanga, Kamesh and Rosedale in Uitenhage today.
This is according to ANC regional Secretary Zandisile Qupe. Three urgent meetings
will be held in the different areas. The first one will be at the Allanridge Hall at 10am, followed by KwaXaba at 1pm and in an open space known as Moeggesukkel at 3pm. Attendees will be addressed by Nelson Mandela Bay Executive Mayor Oom Ben Fihla and Human Settlement Portfolio Chairperson Buyisile Mkavu among others. The alliance partners and clergy will also attend these very important meetings, ac-
cording to Qupe. Qupe said these meetings were aimed at quelling the violent protests that saw the destruction of public and private property, including the office of Ward 50 Cllr Zolani Ncwadi and PR Cllr Sienna Baartman, a community hall and a clinic last Thursday. It is believed angry back-shack dwellers started the mayhem as they illegally occupied the land in demand for houses. They blamed
the municipality for poor service delivery. Singing struggle songs and toyi-toying, the residents blockaded the entrance into Rosedale and threw stones at municipal vehicles and the police while burning tyres. Watching the city under siege, one resident commented that Uitenhage was burning like Marikana!

Community unite for bereaved family NCEBA DLADLA MEMBERS of the community in Uitenhage have united to assist the family of a 10year old victim of last week’s riots in the Rosedale, KwaLanga and Kamesh area. “Uitenhage community structures have united to help the family of the Uitenhage riot victim,” said Nelson Mandela Bay Municipal spokesperson Kupido Baron. However, we call upon the law abiding citizens of Uitenhage to distance themselves from violent acts. maintain a high police presence in the area to ensure that there were no further incidents of crime reported. Four suspects were arrested last Friday. The ANC regional executive met branch members at Uitenhage Town Hall on Saturday, according to Qupe. “We told branches that it was their responsibility to inform residents of government programmes, and not let people become angry and take drastic action because of lack of information,” said Qupe. He further said, “Land invasion is, however, illegal. The delivery of houses is government’s responsibility. Cllr Mkavu will do a presentation to show the residents that our government is working on a housing delivery plan - which is still on course,”

that they would be helping the family. Marisha, daughter of Bonakele and Maria Speelman, died tragically last week during the protests in which public and private property was damaged and the lives of public representatives threatened. ANC Regional Secretary Zandisile Qupe sent words of condolence to the bereaved family for the unfortunate incident. He said, “As the ANC in the region we are deeply sorry to the Speelman family for losing their child at such a tender age. Incidents like this should not happen in this metro municipality.”
In a meeting held at the Jeff Masemola Community Hall last Thursday, both the Jikeleza taxi owners and drivers showed their commitment to good work ethics as they received the registration stickers for their Jikelezas from KwaNobuhle Police Station Commander Colonel Zolani Xawuka and the CPF Executive last Thursday. “We want all the Jikelezas operating here to have stickers so that we know who their owners are, their drivers and which vehicle make they are,” said Col Xawuka. This was also aimed at assisting commuters who lost their valuables like cellphones, IDs and purses to know what number the Jikeleza was in order to get their lost belongings back. “This would also prevent vehicles from outside of the area, like Port Elizabeth for instance, coming to work illegally in KwaNobuhle,” said CPF Chairperson Monica
Mbatsha. Mbatsha added that this registration was also intended to be a deterrent to would-be robbers and rapists pretending to be Jikeleza taxis in order to prey on unsuspecting people especially women at night. In the meeting it was decided that no unregistered Jikeleza would be allowed on the road after the end of November. Nobody from outside of KwaNobuhle would be allowed to ferry passengers and drunken-driving would not be allowed. “Nobody will be allowed to spoil the peace in KwaNobuhle!” Drivers were told that the registration and numbering of their vehicles did not absolve traffic officers and the police from doing their traffic-law enforcement work. “Road blocks, stop and search and other safety-requirements would still be expected by members, said CF Deputy Chair Siphiwo Vusani “We’ll be working with the SAPS and the CPF on this as we have long been waiting for it,” said Jikeleza Taxi Association Chairperson Kleintjie Plaatjies. Uitenhage police spokesperson W/O Gerda Swart commended the move as the first of its kind which other members of the Uitenhage Cluster would love to emulate.

According to Dora Nginza Hospital Principal Social Worker Pamela Rubushe, Nomawethu delivered a baby boy on Friday November 1 and was discharged on Saturday November 9. Nomawethu left the breast-fed baby in the care of her mother Nontozakhe Poni and was not seen since. Anyway, I had done enough,” said Gqubule. He started his football at the tender age of 11 years in KwaLanga where he was born. “I was involved in football since 1976 as a player and administrator but joined the professional ranks as a referee in 1994,” he reminisced. Mandela Bay NGOs trained on HIV/Aids NCEBA DLADLA EDUCATION and training of Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) and local Co-operatives is very essential for the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals, according to the South African Non-Governmental Organisations Coalition (SANGOCO) Vice-President Joyce Matyumza. In the Six Millennium Development Goals, according to Matyumza, goals number 4, 5 and 6 were intertwined under the broad name of (public) health. She said those goals were essential to achieve and were more than anything else, a responsibility of the NGOs and Cooperatives - as they were working directly with local communities. Explaining, Matyumza said, “Goal number 4 - is about reducing child mortality, number 5 is about improving maternal health while goal number 6 is about combating HIV/Aids, Malaria and other diseases.” To achieve their aims, Matyumza said they had solicited the training and empowering of Nelson Mandela Bay Munic-
ipality’s SANGOCO affiliated NGOs and Cooperatives by Seboka Network Training and Support at the IDAMASA offices in New Brighton last Wednesday to help them take responsibility in the fight against HIV/Aids. “We are reaching out to local communities in order to empower them with knowledge and skills to combat the spread of HIV/Aids,” said Seboka Network Training and Support Coordinator Patty Hara. “The focus at this two-day workshop was in the Prevention of Mother To Child Transmission (of HIV) aptly referred to as PMTCT,” Hara told PE Express Indaba. Further, Hara said they did public awareness campaigns, ran workshops and worked through clinics and public places to train people and encourage them to train others. “We’ll soon be training Nelson Mandela Bay Traditional Leaders and Councillors, said Hara, a social worker by profession, adding that they also offered counselling to people in need. “People who need our services can contact our office at No. 89 Russell Road,” said Hara in her parting message.

Gogos celebrate their birthdays in style NCEBA DLADLA MEMBERS of the Hoza Goldenage Club took time off from the hustles and bustles of this age to give themselves a treat at St Edward’s Congregational Church in New Brighton last Wednesday. The gogos had a birthday celebration party in honour of those among them who were born in August, September and October. Celebrating birthdays were Irene Hopa (84), Lindelwa Tiso (75), Dikeledi Menong (65), Thandeka Sokuyeka (60), Nobantu Oliphant (61), Mase Lupondwana (68) and Nomzi Zondani (73). The members had prepared a scrumptious three-course meal which was served with love and enjoyed by all. “We have had a lot of work this year and decided to give ourselves a good time by celebrating the birthdays of some of our
members,” said club founder Jurmatha Majola. This year alone they knitted and donated jerseys to schools for their needy children and also donated cricket kit as well as cricket jerseys to schools that play cricket. “Those (cricket kit and jerseys), we got from Gerald (Majola),’’ she said, referring to her son, former SA Cricket, CEO son, Gerald Majola. Port Elizabeth social workers Nolusindiso Williams, Yoliswa Mahaniso and Phindiwe Mnyatheli visited the gogos on the big day and wished them well. “It is good for the elderly to just forget about everything else, just once, and have a good time. We are here to support them,” said Williams who stated that they were not even aware of the party - but came only to see whether the old ladies were well. “Oh yes, we are well and happy,” said Nobantu Oliphant, one of those who were celebrating their birthdays.

Dr Appavo won’t close for December NCEBA DLADLA POPULAR Port Elizabeth medical practitioner Soondra Appavo has permanently moved from his surgery in Korsten to Salsoneville. Dr Appavo said the move was prompted by the fact that his patients were struggling to locate him because of his alternating between these two premises. The Salsoneville surgery is within walking distance from the Cleary Park taxi rank, for those PE Express Indaba readers who are not mobile. He said he wished his patients a healthy festive season, but in case of health problems he will be able to assist as he will not be closing for December. “For the past eight years I have been open-
ing in Salsoneville at 8am and closing at about noon to start opening in Korsten just before 2pm. This has been a problem for many of my patients,” explained Dr Appavo, who is the son of one Dr SV Appavo, a very well-known community leader who had since passed on. Soondra, who studied BA at a United States (US) university and MBBs in India, started his practice in Salsoneville in 1992. Former nursing sister Ruth Coltman (68) of Bridgemead who once worked with Dr Appavo at Livingstone Hospital, later joined him when he started his private practice and was now his patient said she would not mind going to Salsoniville to see Dr Appavo. “He’s such a caring and compassionate doctor who takes so much pride in his job. Wherever his surgery is, I’ll go,” said Mama Ruth.

Schools benefit from Omo’s contribution
NCEBA DLADLA
TWO Nelson Mandela Bay schools, Fumisukoma and BJ Mnyanda were the proud recipients of the Sports kit and Science Mini-Labs at the end of October, thanks to OMO Schools’ Challenge. Fumisukoma Primary School from Motherwell and KwaZakhele’s BJ Mnyanda Primary school were among the 75 South African schools that took part and won in the nationwide Omo consumer competition. “These schools received brand new sports kits in 2013, plus a Mini Science lab per school,” said Omo spokesperson Caroline Clayton. These Science Portalabs, Clayton said, have a proven success rate in helping mould young minds by providing practical application to what they learn. Explaining, Clayton said, “The benefits include a 30% increase in learners’ Natural Science assessment marks, promote teamwork and get learners involved and moreover, because they make science lessons more meaningful they improve learners’ attitudes to the subject.” In its 7th year to date, the OMO Schools’ Challenge has helped South African pupils un-
leash their full potential through spending time outdoors and getting much-deserved physical activity. BJ Mnyanda Primary School Principal Tammie Xaluva commended Omo for making such a huge difference in the lives of the pupils of her school. “The NS teachers are so overjoyed by this gesture that they find it so easy to complete lessons as they are able to do experiments in the Mini-lab. The pupils are able to see the experiments and find the lesson meaningful and easy to understand,” said Xaluva. She added that it was the same with the sports-gear. “Our children love sport and wear the kit every Wednesday and even on Mondays during Physical Training,” said Xaluva. According to Clayton, this gesture was also part of OMO’s 50th birthday celebration, aimed at making a positive contribution to South African children’s education. “OMO has been actively involved in the OMO Schools Challenge for the past 7 years, the results of which have impacted children all over South Africa. We believe our efforts have definitely contributed to improving children’s performance at school and consequently provided them with opportunities to achieve their full potential,” said Clayton.

Excelling Ben Nyathi pupils awarded NCEBA DLADLA BEN Nyathi Primary School had its annual prize-giving at Lilian Ngoyi Sports Centre, Kwazakhele last Tuesday November 12. “It was an opportunity for us to reward top academic achievers and those pupils of our school who excel in music and sports,” said Deputy Principal Matholengwe Xamana. All Grade 1-8 pupils who excelled in the Learning Areas taught at the school received Diplomas together with those who participated and excelled in the school’s soccer, netball and rugby. Xamana said during the glittering event they also acknowledged and awarded certificates to pupils for their diligence, neatness and the most improved in academic as well as cultural activities. Akhona Sonti and Nomphelo Monki were the most celebrated pupils in the event for having put this Kwazakhele school on the national map. Said Xamana, “A rugby player, Sonti was awarded with EP colours this year. He was in an EP U-12 Team that played in a national tournament in Riversdale in September.” Although it was not the first time that a Ben Nyathi Primary School’s rugby player received EP colours, according to Xamana, no one had ever represented the province in a national competition,” said Xamana, adding that like Sonti, Monki, a soloist in Grade 7
represented the province in a national music competition this year - something that was done only by a choir, previously. “These children put our school on the national map. Now we are known nationally, because of them,” a delighted Xamana said..

PE Golfer Peter Zingela wins Open Golf Tourney NCEBA DLADLA PORT Elizabeth amateur golfer Peter Zingela won the Fish River Sun Golf Open that took place at the Fish River Resort near Port Alfred at the weekend. It was not an easy feat, according to EP player Zingela who has had a couple of tournament wins before. Explaining, he said that the stormy weather and his equally talented and determined opposition nearly spoilt it all for him. “It was a bit hard because of the thunderstorms of the last Saturday. For instance, we had

to play 36 holes but the game was stopped because of the weather while I was just at 10 holes,” said Zingela. Other players, at this stage, were already at 17 and 19 holes but Zingela considered himself lucky as he started off on a high note when the game resumed at 6am the following morning. “The game took off at 6am on Sunday and I played so much better, said Zingela from Zwide township. Born and bread in Walmer township Zingela started playing the sport at the tender age of 11. He said he was contemplating taking the sport professionally but was worried by lack of game time which could destabilise his plans of playing the sport that he so dearly loved. “I have only a few games to go before I reach the milestone of being the most kept amateur player in the province. At this stage I am looking forward to achieving that, and perhaps in the future I’ll consider turning professional at over 50,” said Zingela proudly.
also had a good game. Nxumalo told PE Express Indaba after the game that Real City would make the going tough in Lusikisiki in the second round and he said that they were happy with the away goal. Nxumalo commended City as a team full of young aspiring players. Morning Stars lost 1-0 their second game to Buffalo FC in East London.
REAL City drew their SAFA Eastern Cape Second Division League first home game 1-1 with the tough Lusikisiki side Champions FC in front of their hundreds of home supporters at Motherwell NU 9 Stadium on Saturday November 16, 2013. City started like a house on fire but the visitors looked dangerous on counter attack. The home side piled on pressure; their first goal came up with Siphelele Gwenu Jonas to putting his side in the lead of 1-0. Champions’ goalkeeper stood his ground, thus pulling brilliant saves throughout the whole first half. In the second half City could have wrapped up the game as their front men Lukhanyo Sheriff Rasmeni and Gwenu shots were dealt with by Champions goal stopper. Following four corner kicks in succession Champions finally broke City’s strong wall with their skillful midfielder Vela Khumalo heading home their equalizing goal to make the final score 1-1. City’s captain Lwandile Mfulana was outstanding at the back and Gwenu was troublesome to the visitors’ defence but Champions’ skipper Luyanda Nxumalo
