Nelson Mandela stadium sees First Orange Afcon 2013 goals NCEBA DLADLA
N
ELSON Mandela Bay was the first stadium in the country to see the first goals scored in the Orange Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) 2013 Tournament on Sunday. Five goals were scored in two Group B matches here, while Group A matches played on Saturday at the National Stadium in Johannesburg, one featuring Bafana Bafana against Cape Verde and the other Angola against Morocco, both ended in goalless stalemates. At the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium Ghana drew 2-2 with the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) whilst Mali beat Niger 1-0 in the Group B matches watched by more than 20 000 vociferous spectators at Nelson Mandela Stadium. The Black Stars of Ghana’s two goals by Emmanuel Agyemang-Badu (49th minute) and Kwadwo Asamo a few minutes later called DR Congo into action and they were soon rewarded when Deumerci Mbokani who was fouled in the box scored from the penalty spot. “We are very happy that the dedicated fans came out in numbers to support football. They made us feel good about giving them the best,” said Local Organising Committee (LOC)’s Andile Jomo Mkhathu. The first day of the tournament in the bay was incident free, noted Mkhathu, who urged supporters to continue to prove that Nelson Mandela Bay is a sports-loving city, a city of football destination. Mkhathu applauded the DR Congo’s performance on the field of play despite the enormous problems their country has been facing in recent times.

Fire victims refuse temporary structures donated to them
NCEBA DLADLA FIRE victims of the Chris Hani Informal Settlement desperate for new homes, last week had to look a gift horse in the mouth after a temporary house donated to them by The Gift of the Givers, overturned minutes after it was erected. This was the first structure of a
100 to be erected. The victims were sheltered at Ithembelihle Comprehensive School since the blaze destroyed their homes. But they had to be relocated when the school re-opened last week. They were then temporarily housed at St. Stephen’s Church Hall, also in New Brighton. “We appreciate what the Gift of the Givers is doing, but it is not
their responsibility to build us houses. It is the municipality’s responsibility,” said one of the residents during a meeting held with Ward 17 Councillor Ncediso Captain at the church hall on Thursday. “The material they used to put the house up is weak and cannot be trusted to build a house with,” said the resident. Councillor Captain tried in vain to convince the residents to consid-
er taking up the assistance which was offered free of charge - while waiting for the municipality to find alternative accommodation. “The church would soon want to use its hall. It surely cannot be easy for you to prepare to go to work and children to go to school in the manner in which you are currently staying,” said Cllr. Captain. “We were trying to help but there was no official from the Municipali-
ty’s Housing Department to assist us,” said Gift of the Givers’s local coordinator Dr Trudy Nel. She said the structure failed because they did not put down a foundation for it. “The plan was for us to put down concrete to prepare the foundation for the structure. We’ll wait until we hear from the Office of the Mayor, the Disaster Management and the Department of Housing, “ said Dr Nel.
Help police nab two armed robbery suspects NCEBA DLADLA KWAZAKHELE police are investigating two armed robbery cases after a man and a woman were robbed in two separate incidents last week. A case of armed robbery has been reported after a 29 year old man was robbed of his cellphone while sleeping with his girlfriend at his home in Kulati Street at about 5am last Friday. According to police spokesperson Warrant Officer Thembi Gwe, the complainant was woken up by a knock at his door as an unknown suspect was shouting his name. “He immediately went to investigate through his window and he saw three males. He opened the door to find out what they wanted when
one of the suspects pointed a firearm at the complainant and demanded a firearm from him,” said W/O Gwe. When the man told the suspects he did not have a firearm, they searched the house, took his girlfriend’s phone and disappeared. In another incident, a 20-year old woman waiting for a taxi in Njoli Road at 4.30pm last Thursday was approached by two unknown suspects carrying knives. They demanded her bag. Warrant Officer Gwe said the two men grabbed the bag that had clothing in it and fled the scene. “Police are still looking for the suspects,” said W/O Gwe, adding that anyone with information on any of the two cases should not hesitate to inform the police. PORT Elizabeth’s Herald of Hope Bible Training Centre is calling on the leadership of independent churches in the Nelson Mandela Bay townships to receive training. The Bible Centre in Missionvale is working in conjunction with the Union of Pentocostal Evangelical Independent Churches to provide church leaders with training through workshops run on Saturdays. We then use our calling to train and empower them,” said Rev Booysen. They cover a variety of topics such as training and promotion, membership and finance, church growth, church offering, spirituality, interaction with other Christian Organisations and social relief programmes, to name a few. The centre’s manager, Apostle Roland Lewis of the Elijah Living Ministries in Missionvale, said he had benefited tremendously from
the training received at the centre. “I invite other church leaders to come and learn how to be effective in the body of Christ,” said Apostle Lewis. Lewis said the training would also help leadership in working with their communities to address poverty, drug and substance abuse as well as the scourge of HIV/Aids. “No matric certificate is required in the training,” said Rev Booysen, adding that the workshops are not theoretical but practical. Trainees pay R150 (donation) which is used to benefit the Soup Kitchen run by the centre, according to Rev Booysen. For enquiries Rev. Booysen can be contacted at 0 074 224 6228.

IPTS finally on the move TANYA VAN ZYL IT was all systems go on Monday when the Integrated Public Transport System, or IPTS, of Nelson Mandela Bay finally started moving forward when it opened (its bus doors) to the public. After standing still for more than two years (after the Fifa 2010 Soccer World Cup), the buses could be seen all over certain parts of Port Elizabeth on Monday.
The media were invited to hop on to one of the buses to experience it first-hand. We were taken on the Greenacres route (Route 304: City Centre to Greenacres). According to Mthubanzi Mniki, Communications Officer at the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality, patrons will have to pay cash to get on to the bus in the beginning, but tickets will be issued at a later stage. “Once tickets can be bought, we would like to encourage people rather to buy tickets, than to pay cash,” he said. Tickets will range between R5 and R12 for
the longer routes, like Motherwell. Prices will also differ for scholars, adults or pensioners, Mniki explained. This type of transport would be his first choice of travelling from now on, said Aubrey Mali, a patron – even though he has a car. “This is much more economical!” ) For a virtual tour on the bus, go to www.peexpress.co.za or our mobi site at http://peexpress.mobi and check under Multimedia | Video Galleries. We will also upload the different routes of the IPTS buses.

Call to train parents for School Governing Bodies NCEBA DLADLA THE Inter-Denominational African Ministers Association of Southern Africa (IDAMASA) has called on parents to show interest in their children’s education. In a meeting held between IDAMASA and the Department of Education’s School Governing Bodies (SGBs) Coordinator, Nontombi Nama, in New Brighton on Sunday, participation of parents in school governance or lack of it was thrashed out. Miss Nama highlighted that the role of parents was key in school governance since the advent of democracy. “We believe some parents don’t want to involve themselves in the SGB because they lack capacity. If they can be empowered with knowledge and skills to run effective SGBs, we believe they could make an immense contribution and that the many problems facing schools these
days could be reduced,” said IDAMASA President Bishop Sandile Jika. Reverend Mcebisi Xundu suggested that IDAMASA call another meeting between the stakeholders including teacher-unions, the Association of SGBs, SGB Forum and principals to chart the way forward. . THE Department of Education spokesperson Malibongwe Mtima has advised communities to contact the District Admission teams in the event of facing problems since the schools opened last Wednesday. As part of their school readiness campaign in the Eastern Cape, the department advises people facing problems relating to schooling in general to call the Customer Care Number at 0 (043) 735 2790/1/2. Members of the District Admission Team that can be contacted when there is a problem are Mr Justice Tutu 0 082 255 0519 and Mrs Nama 0 082 784 0390 both in Port Elizabeth and Mr Gorgonzola 0 084 340 9837 and Mrs Macuba 0 082 368 4442 both in Uitenhage.

Project at NMMU to help bridge divide between school and university OVER 40% of first year students in the country never make it past their first year. This is attributed to a variety of obstacles that young people have to overcome when leaving school, says Totsie Memela-Khambula, CEO of Eduloan which provides loans to students. Not only do they struggle with limited access to sufficient finance to pay for further studies, but they also lack life skills, proper career guidance and social support systems. In addition they often come from schools where the level of education is inadequate. “It is no wonder that only 15% of students entering university in SA eventually emerge with a degree in hand after the minimum years of study required.
“These stumbling blocks are a dominant cause of students taking much longer than the minimum time required to complete their degrees. This places a heavy load on already financially burdened parents,” says Memela-Khambula. To help bridge the divide between secondary and tertiary education, Eduloan is currently in the process of establishing a trust to give students who have been granted loans by Eduloan, an opportunity to succeed. “This is a very exciting project based at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University. Tutors will be made available to these students electronically. Students who have questions they may be too embarrassed to ask in class can connect and get answers,” says Memela-Khambula. There are several ways to narrow
thisgapbetweensecondaryandtertiary education, says Memela-Khambula. “Firstly, teachers should focus on teaching and be passionate about this calling. “Secondly, we must take a look at the pupils themselves. I witness a certain entitlement attitude among the ‘born-frees’ – the generation born after the attainment of democracy in 1994. The older generation understands that hard work pays off. In contrast to this, today’s youngsters seem to view tenderpreneurs as role models – people who are not highly educated, but who seem to have money. We need to find better role models who can highlight the importance of education for yourself, your family, the economy, and our nation,” says Memela-Khambula. A third problem area is the lack
of career guidance for South Africa’s youngsters, she says. The result is that they arrive on campus with only the faintest idea of what is available to them. They choose the wrong subjects; they have no social support, and a vicious downward spiral of failure starts. “Kids need to get exposed to the world of work soon, and often. They need to become informed about what is required for a certain career so they can start building their future.” Memela-Khambula says the perception that universities of technology or colleges of Further Education and Training (FETs) are not good enough is false. “What we need most are people with practical skills – like plumbers and artisans – people who can become self-employed and create jobs
for others.” Memela-Khambula has a personal message forstudents. “Even in some of the worst circumstances, where pupils have to study in shacks, without running water or electricity, never mind their own room and desk, we still find those that stand out every year. This is evidence that if you study hard, if you really want to, you can make it, and can even obtain a bursary. Poverty need not stand in your way.” She comes from a poor background herself, with her mother a domestic worker. “She told us that the only thing that could end the cycle of poverty was education. I believed her. I learned first-hand that you get education wherever you can. If your family has no money, that is no excuse. Work by day, and study by night.”

Red City draws with Boast Pirates SELBY MADIKANE FANS watched the most exciting NEBFA Sedgars Premier League games at Chevrolet Stadium on 13 January 2013. The Red City and Boast Pirates clash was one of the most enterprising games, but ended in a goalless draw. Both teams played running soccer through-
out the game, with their strikers being innocuous in front of the goalkeepers. City Defenders whacked the harmless Bold Tigers 5-0 who seemed not to be bold at all. Eastern Jumpers devastated Pondo Stars 2-0, while Real White City ousted Winter Rose 1-0. City Lads shared the spoils 3-3 with Stinging Bees. Amakhosi beat Friendly City 1-0 in First Division.
OWING to the demand from budding cyclists, The Herald VW Cycle Tour has introduced an “endurance” challenge for children called the Powerade 10km Sprint. Aimed at the 10 to 12 year age group, the latest addition to the Powerade-sponsored family road events effectively bridges the gap between the 21km Leisure Ride on the one side and the 2km Kiddies’ Ride and 500m Toddlers’ Dash on the other. According to event coordinator Linda Harwood, the new race fulfilled the organisers’ vision to offer a complete weekend festival of cycling. “Like the Leisure Ride, it’s an ideal opportunity for parents to interact with their kids because participants have to be accompanied by an adult.” For older teens, Harwood said the new 55km Pursuit – which replaces the existing 40km and 70km races – would include licensed U14 and U16 racing categories. “Now there really is something for everyone leading up to the 106km Classic feature race.” On the mountain bike side, she said Powerade would once again sponsor the 30km Leisure Challenge, 5km Kiddies’ Challenge and 500m Toddlers’ Dash. She said the cycle tour – which takes place in Port Elizabeth and Addo – epitomised Nelson Mandela Bay’s healthy, familyoriented, outdoor lifestyle. Powerade’s special events manager Danny Williams said it was these values that resonated strongly with the sports drink brand. “Our brand is very much about family togetherness and living a healthy, active lifestyle. We love the fact that the new event has kids riding with their moms and dads.” Williams said the 10km race was a welcome addition to the line-up and that Powerade had
been a proud sponsor of the road and mountain bike family events since their inception. He said the sponsorship would once again include a financial contribution, liquid refreshment for participants and novelty items for the goodie bags. “Our two Gig Rigs (mobile music trucks) will also add to the festive atmosphere over the weekend.” Aside from the sponsorship aspect, Williams said the tour was important from a corporate social responsibility perspective. “We are very happy about Reach for a Dream’s involvement and that they benefit directly from it.” Proceeds from the family road races go to the non-profit organisation, which makes the wishes of children with life-threatening illnesses come true. One such recipient is 15-year-old cancer survivor Vuvu, who was diagnosed with aplastic anaemia last year and received a life-saving bone marrow transplant from her five-year-old brother Andile. Vuvu’s wish for a scrapbooking kit was fulfilled last October and kept her busy during her four-month stay at the Red Cross Children’s Hospital in Cape Town. Now in remission, the Victoria Park High School pupil described her little brother as “very brave and joyful” and said the operation had strengthened their already close bond. She said she would be there to cheer Andile on when he took part in the Toddlers’ Dash at Hobie Beach in PE on Saturday, February 2. All the family road and mountain bike events take place on the Saturday, while the 55km Pursuit and 106km Classic round off the weekend on the Sunday.
