Nomonde’s baby ‘not a curse from God’ NCEBA DLADLA

Little Anokholo Ntoni is growing up nicely like any other normal child. But his deformed head continues to grow. Photo: THEO JEPTHA

HEN a Port Elizabeth woman Nomonde Ntoni gave birth to a baby boy Anokholo at the Dora Nginza Hospital on August 29, little did she know about the time of sorrow and fear that was to follow – sorrow that she has now accepted and submitted into God’s hands. The unemployed mother of 6-year old twins Nomonde (32) has named her baby boy, who was born with with a misformed head, Anokholo - which aptly means “They have faith”. “It is a birth defect as the baby was born with an elongated head. Its a misconception that the baby’s brain is outside the skull,” said Dora Nginza Hospital Principal Social Worker Pamela Rubushe. At the birth of 3-month old Anokholo, who is now growing like any normal child, Nomonde of Red Location in New Brighton, was initially surprised, scared and fearful of what her husband Nkosinathi Ntoni and family would say about the child. According to Rubushe, after receiving counselling and support from the health providers, the child was discharged and Nomonde was advised to take him home. Rubushe said that doctors are concerned that should they operate, the child could die. There isn’t a long life expectancy for kids born with this deformity. “We realised that Nomonde, though married and with a supportive husband, will not cope easily so we provided support for her from the New Brighton Clinic nurses,” said Rubushe, who explained that the hospital could otherwise not keep the child because he was not sick and was not taking any medication.

But members of the community do not understand Nomonde’s child and his deformed head. They allegedly accuse her of a number of things like being punished for drinking too much alcohol, having sinned or plainly being cursed. Owing to the stress caused by these

accusations by neighbours Nomonde has suffered a light stroke which left her mouth and other facial parts twisted. “I have learnt to understand that this is my child and to allow God to take charge. I am used to this child and will accept whatever it is that

God wants for this child. I wish people can let me live in peace with my child,” said a sobbing Nomonde. Nomonde, however, does not understand why the hospital released the baby if she has to suffer that much. The hospital on the other hand, believes she has enough sup-

Nu5 Motherwell,

port to carry on with life and would even qualify for a social grant if she applied. “The St. Francis Hospice is also giving Nomonde support. And we have advised her to come to the hospital if and when there is a need,” said Rubushe.

Motherwell police station to provide space for cash sharing NCEBA DLADLA MOTHERWELL police station has opened its doors for stokvel and society members to come and share their finances in their offices.

people and small entrepreneurs of their cash. “There are, for instance, people who work in the construction industry who still do not have bank accounts. They take their bonus pay in cash and therefore are at risk of falling into the hands of criminals,” said Jama.

Thulani is about 29 years of age, 1.68 meters tall and he speaks fluent IsiXhosa. Thulani was wearing a striped shirt, navy tracksuit pants, white jacket and brown takkies. PORT Elizabeth police in KwaZakhele arrested a 34-year old man for false pretence and theft on Saturday. This is after the man, a motor mechanic from Zwide Township, allegedly conned a 55-year old woman from KwaZakhele out of R4 000 in cash. According to police spokesperson Warrant Officer Thembi Gwe, the woman took her vehicle to the man’s residence in Dlova Street for mechanical repairs. The woman allegedly paid R2 000 deposit. “When the woman came to pay another R2 000 she asked to see the car and was told it was taken somewhere for repairs and parts,” said W/O Gwe.

The complainant insisted on seeing the car and was given an address in town. The address did not exist and as the woman became suspicious, the accused had switched off his cell-phone. There was no contact between the two. “The woman then went to the accused’s address and begged him to tell her what happened to her car. At this stage, the accused told the woman that he gave her car to someone in Motherwell and that he owed that person the sum of R7 000. “She pretended to sympathise with him and asked him to take her to where the car was so that they could negotiate with the person; and that she was willing to assist him with the payment,” said Gwe. But when they arrived at the place, the woman was surprised to

discover that nothing was done to repair the car. It was as is. She then went to the police to report a case of theft. The woman’s vehicle was recovered and the suspect was arrested and is expected to appear in New Brighton Magistrate’s Court soon. W/OGwe has commended the woman for not keeping quiet about this case which she said is one example of abuse against women whilst the country is commemorating 16 Days of Activism Against The Abuse Of Women and Children. “People always think that abuse is only physical. They take things like these for granted and do not report them. We want to thank the woman for standing up. It is only when these cases are reported that we as police can act,” said Gwe.

PE EXPRESS REPORTER THERE are only ten days to go to the kickoff of the much-awaited Nelson Mandela Bay South Africa Sevens tournament in the iconic Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on December 8 and 9. By changing the tournament to a Saturday and Sunday format and keeping ticket prices unchanged, organisers hope to draw capacity crowds on both days and to attract 80 000 fans to establish this tournament as one of the top events on the World Series calendar. Apart from excitement and plenty of action on the rugby field, the crowds will also be entertained by the hottest local and national bands off the playing field. As far as the rugby is concerned, South Africa’s own Blitzbokke will battle it out with 15 other international Sevens teams for the much coveted tournament title. The tournament is round three of the HSBC Sevens World Series which consists of nine tournaments in total – spanning from October to June and touching down on each continent. er for the same training. The mayor said this job creation drive and skills training emanated from the five priorities of the ANCled government. He said his municipality was aimed at creating jobs to benefit the most vulnerable members of the community. The executive mayor was hoping this programme would help provide

beneficiaries with skills required in the job market with the purpose of bettering future employment prospects and also bring services to the public through community-based programmes, he said. This would reduce unemployment and poverty amongst the most vulnerable communities and promote skills development. “It is this background and think-

ing that propelled the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality to initiate a process of developing a municipal jobs plan,” said mayor Wayile. He added that they have identified SMME and cooperatives development, the Expanded Public Works Programme as well as the Community Works Programme as an “indispensable strategy” of promoting job creation on a massive scale.

A NUMBER of big retail brands, including a national bank, have signalled their confidence in the rejuvenated Port Elizabeth central business district by moving into Pier 14 Shopping Centre on Govan Mbeki Avenue in time for the festive season. The most recent addition, the North End branch of Standard Bank, is relocating to Pier 14 and will open for business on December 1. It joins new fast food franchise outlets Debonairs Pizza and Cassie’s, which started trading last month. According to Martin Wragge, CEO of GRITprop Investments, which owns Pier 14 Shopping Centre, the influx of national tenants was in part due to a five-year, R40-million expansion process. “The upgrade has increased footfall and turnover and we now have more than eight million feet passing through our doors annually.” Wragge said management was anticipating bumper peak season trading, with retail turnovers expected to top R270 million for the financial year. “We are thrilled that our efforts to increase trading volumes are finally paying off.” He said total average trading densities were up by 18.1% and that the trend was expected to continue as management not only attracted new tenants but also “right-sized” the existing tenant base. “Too many of our tenants have been trading in oversized spaces due to historically cheap rentals.” Over the past six months, Pier 14 has been engaged in a process of reducing the floor space of existing tenants by between 20% and 50%, said Wragge. “The result is better densities, more affordable rentals and greater profitability for the

tenants and centre alike.” He said the downsizing process had also opened up new trading spaces for retailers on the ground and first floors, which had been fully occupied for some time. Wragge said this had helped to diversify Pier 14’s tenant mix, which comprised mainly fashion, footwear, music, furniture and appliances, as well as health and beauty stores. “With the recent addition of Cassie’s and Debonairs, we now have a good mix of food retailers.” Debonairs Pizza co-owner, Taki Pitsiladi, said he and his partners, brother Peter and Hugo Fourie, had always believed that there were good business opportunities to be had in the centre. “There is much trade and movement on the ground floor and we’re in a good position right next to (anchor tenant) Shoprite.” Earlier this year, Pier 14 fitted a Chingo’s chicken outlet, an Old Fashioned Fish and Chips, as well as the Linga Longa restaurant to join existing traders Hungry Lion, Pie City and King Pie. Wragge said Standard Bank’s presence would strengthen the centre’s financial services offering, which included Nedbank, Old Mutual Finance, Surebank, Bayport Financial Services and Bridge Loans. “We’re currently in negotiations with a few more national tenants, which we obviously can’t name yet.” Pier 14 features seven floors of office and retail space, covering a gross lettable area of 30 273m2, including the revamped 25 000m² retail component.

Mount Road Police Station cluster says ‘no’ to women abuse NCEBA DLADLA WOMEN have been exhorted to stand up and be counted against abuse of any kind. This is the main aim of 16-days of Activism Against Women and Child Abuse which was launched at the Gelvandale Community Hall in Port Elizabeth last Friday. Mount Road Police Station Cluster, which includes Gelvandale, Bethelsdorp, Algoa Park, Kabega, Humewood and Mount Road Police Stations, as well as Community Police Forums, Women’s Network, Victim Support Centres and members of the church fraternity, joined hands against this crime against women and children. It was noted that despite 18 years into freedom and democracy in this country, by and large, women were still not free. “Women still fall victim to domestic violence, sexual, emotional, psychological, economical and physical abuse despite the legislation in this country to protect the abuse of women and children,” said SAPS Communications Officer Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg. She mentioned the Domestic Vio-

lence Act, Sexual Offences Act and Child Protection Act as some of the laws implemented by government to ensure that women and children’s rights are respected. “Family members, especially husbands, boyfriends and men known to the victims, were usually the abusers,” said Captain Janse van Rensburg. Lieutenant Rene Williams ex-

New Brighton’s Kama Primary School opens new sportfields NCEBA DLADLA THE establishment of a sportsfield at Kama Primary School in New Brighton is an investment in the youth of the township. The sportsfield was made possible by sponsorship from Vula Energy, Canon and businessman Mark Headbush. “I am so happy. It’s a dream come true,” said school principal Nobantu Oliphant. The school, which is one of the historical institutions of learning in Port Elizabeth, cut the ribbon earlier this month to declare the fields officially open. The sponsors donated a total of R250 000 to build the field and buy

soccer and rugby kits to benefit the sports enthusiastic pupils of the school. Oliphant said, most of the 775 pupils enrolled at the school come from very poor backgrounds. She said it has always been her wish that they get a playing field so that they can use their sporting talents which, coupled with education, could help them achieve greatness in life. “The kids are our future. We have always wanted to be involved with their development. Having seen what Ms Oliphant has done to help the school get to where it is right now; we decided to be involved to take the school to even greater heights,” said Canon Sales Director Dalen Davidson. the kids that inspired Vula Energy MD, Louis Greeff to start helping Kama Primary School two years ago. “I am happy that my company is part of this and we have committed to look after the field every month,” said Greeff. “This is going to help us produce great soccer and rugby players who will represent this country at international level. Without the grounds, that would have been impossible,” said Headbush, a former pupil at the school. Keynote speaker Pastor Siphiwo Kiti urged members of the school fraternity and especially the community to take good care of the fields. “The field is ready for your taking; but it must be well managed,” said Past. Kiti to a thunderous applause.

This revival, he believes, will bring Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality back to God! “In this crusade, we are hoping to evangelize the community and instil the gospel of God into their hearts and minds. We are convinced this will bring back the spirit of ubuntu and restore lost morals,” said Past. Siyona. Being a police Sergeant, Past. Siyona said the recent killing of police and traffic officials in the metro has spurred them into taking this initiative which came to him in a revelation. There will be live music and entrance at the door is free.

SAFA NMB MTN soccer tournament launched SELBY MADIKANE THE SAFA Nelson Mandela Bay tournament with MTN again as major sponsor, was launched at a glittering function held at City Hall on 22 November. SAFA President Nematandani, SAFA EC Secretary Isaac Klaas, SAFA NMB President Mzimkhulu Fina with his executive committee members, SAFA NMB former president Johnson Kula, Dudley Zikhali from MTN, Banyana defender Amanda Sister, NMB Municipality Acting Sport Director Ndileka Leqela and club delegates, graced the launch and sponsorship announcement. Welcoming the audience, Fina stated that the tournament would boost the morale of the players. He said soccer was hampered in this region owing to the inaccessibility of municipal

facilities. Fina said, “We are treated as refugees in our country. This is a major challenge that we face in the region. Municipality and the government must intervene in order to make facilities available for football.” MTN Zikhali highlighted that unity was critical in sport and their primary role at MTN was to promote sport and to keep the youth in sport. Zikhali told the audience that the clubs should refrain from importing players since the tournament was the proper platform of developing the youth. Zikhali congratulated the 2011 winners Royal Bucs. President Nematandani commended MTN for their role in the development of football and described MTN as the catalysts of social change. Nematandani appreciated the fact that MTN was realizing the importance of sharing with the people on the ground. “This tournament gives hope

to many teams. The MTN tournament forms a platform from where new talent will be unearthed. Football plays a pivotal role. I am very worried that there is no team in the PSL,” said Nematandani. The tournament is played according to a point system with the 32 teams divided into eight groups. It will end up in a knock-out system at Wolfson Stadium on 8 December 2012. The teams were grouped as follows Group A: Group B Group C Group D Movers (MOFA) Zwide Celtic (ZWIFA) Pioneers (NODEFA) NUBS (ZAFA) Callies (PEFA) Moonlight (LAROFA) Glenville (NAFA) Young Teenagers (PEEFA) Airportvalley (Wafa) Amakhosi (NEBFA) XI Wizards (KUYGA) NUBS (PENFA) PE United (NEBFA) Young Cosmos (WAFA) Dynamos (ZAFA) KUBS (NO-

Award nets sponsorship for SPAR-NMMU PE EXPRESS REPORTER

“All of a sudden some of your national players would like to study at NMMU or are looking for jobs in PE!” Le Roux said 80% of the players selected for the NMBNA provincial teams were from the university, but that they would not have been able to achieve their goals without the retailer’s backing. “Not only has it enabled us to assist many from previously disadvantaged areas, it has also given our players opportunities to take part in areas of the sport ranging from coaching to umpiring and scoring clinics.” Le Roux said presenting development clinics at schools throughout the province had also given them the opportunity to identify and groom future talent for the university. SPAR Eastern Cape has reconfirmed its commitment to the development of local women’s sport by extending its sponsorship of the SPARNMMU Netball Club for a further three years. This follows the latter’s recognition as Sports Club of the Year at the prestige Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University Achiever Awards last week. The club won the provincial netball league for a seventh consecutive year with several players and management representing South Africa at international level. According to SPAR promotions and advertising manager Wendy Westraadt, they enjoyed a mutually beneficial relationship with the club and were very proud of its achievements. “The players and staff have worked very hard and thoroughly deserve it.” NMMU sports manager Theresa le Roux said the award was made on a points system based on club results, player achievements and involvement in community outreach programmes. “The trophy is highlyprized because it takes into account all the efforts that a club has put in during the year.” Le Roux said they were particularly proud of wing defender Zanele Mdodana, who captained the Proteas to a gold medal in the Diamond League Series in August. She was joined in the national squad by team-mates Mampho Tsotetsi and Nontle Gwavu. In July, goalkeeper Zanele Vimbela was called up to the SA student team that took silver at the World University Netball Championships. She was also named Player of the Year at the Nelson Mandela Bay Netball Association awards ceremony on Friday. On the management side, head coach Lana Krige was appointed coach of the national Fastnet team. Indaba Sport Crystal Palace shared spoils with Bucs SELBY MADIKANE FANS were sent into raptures when Crystal Palace took on Royal Buccaneers during their SAFA Nelson Mandela Bay SAB Regional League 2-2 drawn game played at Motherwell NU 9 Stadium on 17 November. Palace were firing on all cylinders, but the Sea Robbers side proved that they were having depth. Lithemba Manjezi’s tame shot beat Bucs goalkeeper after the ball bounced on the uneven area of the

goalkeeper’s area to put Palace 1-0 up in front in the 27th minute. Bucs threw everything into the game but the first half remained 1-0 in favour of Palace. In the 61th minute of the second half Bucs’ diminutive striker Akhulile Eto’o Dlilanga scored an equalizing goal. It appeared as if Palace were going to emerge as winners following a well-taken header by Xolisile Zongo Kona in the 78th minute registering a 2-1 lead. The joy of Palace fans was however short-lived with Thamsanqa’Sweswe’ Gwabeni scoring Bucs’ equalizing goal to make it a final score of 2-2.

Predators draw in fierce battle SELBY MADIKANE THE game of the predators – Bold Tigers taking on Roaring Tigers – was described by football enthusiasts as the game of the year in the NEBFA Sedgars League ending in a 2-2 draw. Stinging Bees managed to secure three maximum points in their 2-1 victory over PE Sundowns. City Defenders played to a 1-1 draw against CCX Callies with Bush Bucks trailing 2-0 to PE United. STARS COULD NOT OUTSHINE STUDENTS Tomorrow Stars could not outshine PE College when they succumbed to them with a 4-1 devastating loss during a SAFANelsonMandelaBayABSAWomen’s Regional League clash at Motherwell NU 9 Stadium recently.
