Mayor wants to restore metro’s boxing glory NCEBA DLADLA

HE days when Nelson Mandela Bay used to be known as the Mecca of Boxing are beckoning, thanks to the election on Saturday of a vibrant amateur boxing structure aimed at bringing back the glorious days of the sport.

The launch of Nelson Mandela Bay Amateur Boxing Organisation (NMBABO) at Babs Madlakane Community Hall, KwaNobuhle was blessed by the presence of Executive Mayor Benson Fihla who pledged his support for the resurgence of the sport that has produced great champions like the late Mzukisi “Laciar” Skali, Vuyani “Wonder Boy” Nene and Phumzile “Sweet Boy” Madikane, to mention but a few.

The mayor said the launch was the beginning of the sport development programme that the municipality was engaged in. He revealed that R90 000 was granted to the newly formed structure to take the sport forward.

“We need to elevate Nelson Mandela Bay and build on our reputation as a city that produced World Champions and stop the exodus of our talent leaving our shores to seek greener pastures elsewhere,” said Fihla.

An equally elated Phakamisa Mfama who chairs NMBABO thanked the municipality for its assistance and said it was now incumbent upon them who love the sport to work together to bring back the lost glory.

Said Mfama, “It has never happened that our region has been without a (national or world) champion for almost 10 years. Our focus will be on developing amateur boxers from club level. We need to work hard to change things around.”

KwaNobuhle woman wants municipality to replace damaged appliances NCEBA DLADLA AN elderly KWANOBUHLE woman, Beauty Kondile, wants the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality to replace her electrical appliances which were destroyed when a high voltage electricity transformer blew up more than two years ago.

The widowed Kondile (75) of Makinana Street can still remember vividly the events which led to the loss of her personal computer, fridge, 74cm television set and microwave oven, among other things, in 2010.

“There was this loud blast from the transformer outside our house and immediately we saw smoke coming up and realised it was something coming from the transformer”.

Kondile said she reported the matter to the municipality through her son, Duke Mbini and had been sent from pillar to post.

“We were first referred to Uitesco, in KwaNobuhle, and since there had been no

Cllr Dashwood said affected households should work together and ensure that they got at least three quotations for the damaged appliances, certified copy of the ID of the owner of the property, and electricty/ water account number.

According to Kondile, Mankayi and Makotshomela streets were also affected by the high voltage electricity and owners were also running around like her to ask the municipality to assist them in their loss.

“Residents can lodge a claim through the help of a lawyer if the Legal Services of the municipality cannot assist within 90 days of the claim,” said Cllr Dashwood, adding that a lawyer from the Legal Aid Board could be used.

Municipal spokesperson Mthubanzi Mniki said they were investigating the claims.

Switching off geysers in evening could help keep lights on BY switching off geysers between 5pm and 9pm, householders can make a dramatic contribution towards Eskom’s ability to keep the lights on this winter.

This is according to Andrew Etzinger, Senior General Manager, Integrated Demand Management, at Eskom.

Check mate for Bay as chess players converge THOUSANDS of chess players from all over

the world and the country will converge in Port Elizabeth at the beginning of July for prestige chess tournaments.

The highlight will be the Commonwealth Chess Championship 2013 in which more than 800 of the Commonwealth’s finest chess players will compete for the biggest money yet in a South African-hosted chess tournament.

The tournament - to be held between July 2 and July 14 - has already attracted some of the country’s top chess players to The Boardwalk Hotel and Convention Centre.

“It is the first time ever that South Africa’s top male player, Kenny Solomon, the country’s best female player, Melissa Greeff, and the South African Olympiad team will be playing at the same time in an international South African event on a sponsored basis,” said Dr Brian van Zyl, convener of the Commonwealth and South African Open Chess Championship 2013.

It will be the 19th prestige Commonwealth Chess Championship 2013, and is open to chess players from any of the 54 Commonwealth member countries.

“We are honoured that The Boardwalk was chosen as the preferred venue in South Africa to host this prestige international event,”

said The Boardwalk general manager Clifford Ngakane.

“It will put the global spotlight on Nelson Mandela Bay. The hundreds of players and their support teams will create a mini boom for restaurants, hotels and Bed and Breakfasts for more than a week,” he said.

The tournament will be run concurrently with the South African Open Chess Championship, the Nelson Mandela Bay Open Chess Championship and the South African Open Blitz Chess Championship.

The national junior chess championship is the largest event of its kind in the country and attracts more than 2 000 junior chess players from across the country.

Prize money of R250 000 will “be spread over the largest number of recipients ever in South Africa,” said van Zyl. The organisers are also making it possible for the largest possible number of young South African players to be at the tournament.

“This will be the first time ever in South Africa that 47 pick-up points nationally have been created to facilitate players’ and supporters’ travelling arrangements to Nelson Mandela Bay. “The local organising committee has already put plans in place to run a large devel-

President Zuma’s visit to hand over cattle postponed to June NCEBA DLADLA PRESIDENT Jacob Gedleyihlekisa Zuma’s expected visit to Port Elizabeth to hand over cattle to Khoi-San in the region, has been postponed to June.

This according to Khoi-San Political Task Team spokesperson Andrew Jordaan.

The visit was initially planned to take place in the Northern Areas last week Friday (24 May) but was postponed owing to the president’s other pressing commitments.

According to Jordaan, Zuma will be coming with the National Departments of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) and Arts and Culture (A&C) to visit the Rural and Agrarian Reform Department in the Nelson Mandela Bay and Cacadu District Municipalities.

“The president will be here to handover 30 Nguni cows, sheep and goats to the Khoi-San

in this region,” said Jordaan.

“The handover will be done by the Traditional Affairs department but we’ll be there to assist people to farm on land and with livestock,” said Rural and Agrarian Reform Manager Prof. Dan Sandi.

An elated Jordaan believes South Africa is gradually becoming aware of the origins and the fundamental role of the Khoi-San as a nation in the struggle against land dispossession.

He said the Khoi owned land and had kings, chiefs and a way of life.

“We are not coloureds, as many people would like to believe,” said Jordaan, adding that the Khoi were the people that were given the derogatory name Hottentots (meaning good for-nothing) in history while the San were undermined and called the Bushmen because they took part in the battle for this land and were forced to hide in the bushes at a particular point in history.

“We are also not a tribe but a nation,” said

David Douglas, another Khoisan Political Task Team Executive member.”

“We also want to correct the misinterpretation that we are a parallel structure or trying to lead the country into turmoil. We are not.

Government recognises us. They know who we are and that we want to unite the country.

All we want is recognition as the indigenous people of this country.

Member of Parliament Hope Malgas, MPL Christian Martin and Nelson Mandela Bay Councillor Siena Baartman were some of the recognisable faces in the Khoisan Political Task Team who also serve in the National Heritage Steering Committee.

Heal campaign empowers elderly against abuse NCEBA DLADLA ABUSE of elderly citizens was bashed to the core at the Elderly Abuse Awareness Campaign held at Thanduxolo High School, KwaNobuhle in Uitenhage last Wednesday, 22 May. Speakers at the campaign, organised by the non-governmental organisation (NGO) Halt Elder Abuse Line (HEAL) and supported by Ward 45 Councillor Monde Vaaltyn, came from South African Police Services (SAPS), Social Development, FAMSA, Victim Support Centre and KwaNobuhle Community Police Forum (CPF).

“We organised this campaign as part of our educational awareness programme to educate and empower elderly citizens in the Nelson Mandela Metro Municipality about their rights,” said HEAL Coordinator Bulela Mdlankomo.

According to Mdlankomo, elderly abuse in its many forms is rife in the townships and that many of the gogos and mkhulus become victims because they do not know their rights.

All the speakers agreed that elderly citizens were abused physically, sexually, psychologically and financially - every day.

“Of course the biggest problem is financial abuse,” said Mdlankomo.

“For instance, many gogos think that it

is their right to look after and feed their grandchildren while parents their own children live careless lives out there without knowing anything about their children’s developments,” said Mdlankomo.

According to Mdlankomo, families should instead find means to earn a living, and not depend on the old persons’ old-age grants.

Furthermore, Mdlonkomo advised the elderly that they had the option of going to stay in an old-age home. “You can, if you want to,” she said.

“It is wrong for children and grandchildren to abuse their grandparents’ old-age grants. Government gives the money to the elderly and not to support just anyone.

Women know that they must prevent pregnancy and can apply for a child support grant where necessary. They must not depend on grandparents and need to take responsibility for their own children,” said Constable Kiambu Kamba-Beja.

Kamba-Beja spoke about the abuse of grant cards and the involvement of loan sharks (oomatshonisa).

She also explained the process of obtaining a protection order and urged the elderly to make use of the Victim Support Centre in Mkoko Street to report any form of abuse.

A YOUTH company Bar Code Events in conjunction with youth of Motherwell is holding a Motherwell Youth Day Festival at NU2 Community Hall in Motherwell, Port Elizabeth on Friday 14 June.

According to Bar Code Events organisers the event will be part of the national June 16 Youth Day Celebrations in remembrance of the role of the vibrant and resolute youth of 1976 who fought against and overcame political oppression, racial segregation, economic exploitation and substandard education, Twelve Motherwell high schools and local youth will be involved in the event aimed at showing the future leaders’ take on education and entrepreneurship.

“We themed the event ‘Economic Emancipation in our lifetime’ as we want to raise awareness among the youth about opportunities available to empower them to start and grow their businesses and the role they can play in the economy,” said Bar Code Events co-founder Lunga Minyayo.

Minyayo added that former political activist and successful businessman Khusta Jack will be present.

‘Sounds of South End’ staged at the Savoy THE Port Elizabeth Gilbert and Sullivan Society have a long and proud tradition of presenting the highest quality musical theatre productions to the Port Elizabeth community.

In 2011 and 2012 G&S staged the critically acclaimed Fiela’s Child the Musical, an original South African work written by renowned stage and television performer, Ian von Memerty.

This year they present another truly South African production, telling a story that will resonate deeply with PE residents who remember the thriving, cosmopolitan community that was South End before the forced removals.

Sounds of South End is written by local writer, actor and director, Herbie Clayton.

This stirring drama with popular music from the 60s tells the story of the Dietrich family, who have been served with a notice to vacate their home in South End and move to the Northern Areas.

Audiences will share their journey as they deal with the pain of leaving the only home they have ever known, the loss of their community, and the injustice of Apartheid laws regarding mixed marriage.

Harry Dietrich, the once strong family patriarch, played by Desmond Marks, swears he will never leave and as he falls into decline, his wife Helen becomes the family’s strength. Eviction is not the only challenge facing these parents.

with her father over her love for her darkskinned boyfriend James, played by Jody Butler. Shirley, her headstrong, rebellious sister, risks prison to be with her white boyfriend, Peter, much to her family’s, the community’s and his mother’s disapproval.
