Township artists to exhibit in Chicago NCEBA DLADLA

T

wo fine artists from townships in the Bay are preparing for the trip of a lifetime.

Banele Njadayi and Mkhonto Gwazela will be flying off this month to America’s own windy city, Chicago, to showcase their artwork together with over one hundred other pieces from talented Eastern Cape artists. The visit is set to coincide with September’s South African Heritage Month in Chicago. Tradepoint SA Nelson Mandela Bay has been working with Gallery Guichard in Chicago on a project aimed at raising awareness of EC talent among US fine art collectors and galleries. Tradepoint SA hosted a delegation of US art buyers in June this year, holding workshops at the Red Location Museum, the Grahamstown Arts festival, and in Mthatha. Of the 53 artists who attended these workshops, 16 were identified as gallery-ready (i.e. their art work was of a high quality to be displayed and sold to potential art collectors). Art gallery owner and national curator, Andre Guichard of the Gallery Guichard in Chicago said, A total of 151 pieces of art have been commissioned and are currently being packed and air freighted to Chicago in time for an African art exhibition, commencing in Chicago on 19 September. The Eastern Cape art work will be exhibited for two months and it is anticipated that over R1 million will be generated in sales. About 40% of the Chicago population is Afro-American and they are

eager to reconnect with their roots. The attending artists, Banele Njadayi and Mkhonto Gwazela, are thrilled to have been selected to attend this event. They leave Port Elizabeth on 18 September and return on 30 September. Banele Njadayi, a self-taught artist from Walmer Township, is looking forward to the 10-day trip that is meant to change his life for the better. Njadayi thanked Trade Point Company for sponsoring the trip as well as art collectors Andre and Francis Guichard for making the trip a reality. The eRhini born Njadayi’s drawings depict the strong and resilient people of the township. “People who live in shacks are so strong, they don’t even get ill easily. Despite their exposure to poverty and bad weather, they survive.” His Christian religion, the late George Pemba, Gerald Sekoto, Willy Bester and a friend Duncan Steward inspire Njadayi as an artist. He also wants to share his knowledge with the young. “My hope is to see a centre built in the Walmer township to help the youth learn arts. That way they will get out of the grip of crime and drugs by doing something that will help them earn a living.” In the meantime, he invites kids to help him when he paints murals. “They do it themselves while I guide them. At the end of the day I pay them – art pays,” said Njadayi. Fellow artist Mkhonto was equally thrilled: “I am truly honoured to be invited to represent the township art community in Chicago. This is the beginning of a relationship that will establish a US market for our high quality Eastern Cape art, and, if all goes well, this will be the start of a regular trade in art exports from the Eastern Cape.”

Man arrested for murder after allegedly stabbing fiancée’s daughter to death NCEBA DLADLA A UITENHAGE man was arrested on a charge of murder after allegedly stabbing his fiancée’s daughter to death on Sunday morning in KwaNobuhle. Police spokesperson Lt. Col. Priscilla Naidu said the suspect had a heated argument with the mother of the deceased, Vuyiswa Jackson, as they were coming from the local tavern at about 00:30 am. “When Jackson reached her house at Ti-

ro Street, KwaNobuhle, she allegedly struck her boyfriend on the head with a beer bottle. The angry man left and vowed to return,” said Lt.Col. Naidu. When the suspect returned, 20-year-old Amanda Jackson (Vuyiswa’s daughter) opened the door for him but a few seconds later, Amanda returned to the room bleeding from the neck. The mother rushed to the door and saw her boyfriend running away. Amanda was rushed to hospital but she died on arrival. The suspect was arrested.

Local rugby legend, Willy Xego, dies NCEBA DLADLA SOUTH African rugby legend Willy Xego, of KwaNobuhle in Uitenhage, died last week on Wednesday. A meeting will be held today from 2pm at the Babs Madlakane Community Hall in KwaNobuhle to discuss funeral arrangements for Xego. Xego, who played for the Star of Hope RFC, was in his 70s when he died. Xego was one of the greatest flyhalves South Africa has ever produced. This great player and administrator was once selected to play for the EP rugby squad as a Forward Ranker. He is named as the person behind the sharpening of the skills of former rugby great Timothy Konki who played alongside Morne Du Plessis during the World XV against the French Team.

“I was still very young when I played in the team with him. He used to call me Konkana, putting a suffix ‘ana’ in my surname to depict my diminutive nature,” said Konki. According to former rugby administrator Julias Mali, Xego played for Spring Rose in Cradock before he came to work at Royal Hotel, Caledon Street in Uitenhage late in the 1960s. Mali said Xego, who had a weight and height advantage, became influential in making the Stars of Hope RFC a force to be reckoned with in local rugby. “In fact people who know the club history will remember him. He went on to become the club’s President, a baton he gave to his protege, Konki when he retired owing to ill health,” said Mali. Mali said the sporting fraternity in the country had lost a great sportsman in Xego. Xego will be laid to rest this Saturday.

Tears flowing over ‘new’ home ro’s building inspectorate said. Ma’Mehlo was asked last month to live with a friend during the time the building renovations took place. When she arrived at her home and saw the crowd gathering around her house in Vakaza Straat, she realized what the fuss was about and burst into tears. “I don’t know what to say. I am both excited and overwhelmed. I’ve never had a sink of my own. Not to mention a fridge. I’m very grateful,” Ma’Mehlo said. “We are so glad Ma’Mehlo finally has a decent house to stay in,” said Katlego Mapeng (57), a resident of KwaZakhele. “Almost everyone here in KwaZakhele grew up in front of the woman. She was our counsellor, medicine maker and mother. She deserves a good home after everything she did for us.”

ALVENÉ APPOLLIS JANE Mehlo (76) of KwaZakhele shed tears of joy over the “new” house, which she received last week. Mehlo, or Ma’Mehlo as the community knows her, has been living in a dilapidated house in KwaZakhele since 1960. When the Metro municipality’s department of housing heard about her heart’s desire to have a “clean house with a roof and a proper floor” they made a plan. “We approached many businesses to help with the project. So her house was plastered over, the roof and floors were replaced, a sink was built in, a boundary wall was built, and various accessories were donated to make her home livable,” Christo Pheiffer of the met-

Young filmmakers trained to bring Hollywood to the Bay NCEBA DLADLA FORTY unemployed students and graduates have started a groundbreaking training project aimed at creating a foundation for the development of the local film industry in Nelson Mandela Bay.

Offered by the Media Workshop of Port Elizabeth, in association with Johannesburg-based Urban Brew Studios and funded by Media, Information, Communication Technology (MICT) Sector Training Authority (Seta), the project was launched last week. Present at the launch were local future filmmakers, thespians, Bay TV Board members including Monde Ngonyama, and members of

the media. Seen as bringing Hollywood to Port Elizabeth, the project, which is the first of its kind here, is aimed at also contributing towards local economic development. “Assisted by the much-travelled and knowledgeable David Leister who has joined the Media Workshop, the young film-makers will be writing, editing and producing a comedy series for Bay TV as part of the training project,” said Media Workshop founder and owner, Denise Roodt. Leister is also a lecturer in the NQF 4 and NQF 5 Certificate Directing modules. Roodt said it is a real privilege to have David to coach the interns with his wealth of experience. “The intention is to offer a sus-

tainable training and development service to feed into the community television industry which will see this year’s top NQF 4 graduates entering the NQF 5 programme next year. The big dream, according to Leister, is to see graduates produce the Eastern Cape’s first commercial full feature film. “The Media Workshop provides valuable structure, guidance and facilities. Students have a chance of a life-time to be free to experiment and to find their own voice, to realise their passion for filmmaking and to tell their own original stories,”said Leister. Sisanda Matshoba (25), an intern, was “both overjoyed and excited” by the prospects of seeing herself directing her own movie . . . one day.

Minister launches National Book Week in Mandela Bay NCEBA DLADLA ARTS and Culture Minister Paul Matshatile on Monday urged Nelson Mandela residents to read books for knowledge as “Knowledge is power!”. The Minister was speaking at the Babs Madlakane Community Hall in KwaNobuhle, Uitenhage during the Launch of the Third National Book Week which is taking place this week until Saturday, September 8. National Book Week is an initiative of the Department of Arts and Culture in association with the South African Book Development Council. According to Minister Matshatile, the week is the annual premier platform through which

government, the book sector, media and civil society establish dynamic partnerships for the promotion of the culture of reading. “National Book Week is one of the most significant interventions in our efforts to mainstream the book sector as an important contributor to job creation, poverty reduction and skills development,” said Matshatile. With its call to action being “Read a book, share a book, Matshatile said, the programme of National Book Week will feature a number of reading activities for the young and old. He added that these will include story-telling, puppet shows, book club sessions, book debates and creating writing workshops led by some prominent authors.

Sports, Arts and Culture festival staged in first for Uitenhage NCEBA DLADLA PLANS are afoot to hold the first ever Heritage, Sports and Arts festival in Uitenhage. The festival is to be held at the Multipurpose Centre in KwaNobuhle from September 22 to 23, during Heritage Month. “Staging the event in KwaNobhule is quite fitting, as it is the oldest part of Uitenhage which used to be called Qhagqiwa or Etolofiyeni by its original inhabitants,” said local Television Director and Producer Nceba Mqolomba. “Uitenhage is the home of Enoch Sontonga - the author of Um-

hobe Wesizwe (National Anthem) Nkosi Sikelel’ i-Afrika, the place where the wagon was produced and the Great Trek started,” said Mqolomba. He said he has seen festivals of jazz, oysters, cheese and Afrikaans but has never seen a festival celebrating Uitenhage and its great personalities. “Only when they die, do we honour and celebrate people who contributed to the nation-building in our country. And that must come to an end. We must celebrate our heroes and heroines while they are still alive,” said Mqolomba mentioning the likes of Smuts Ngonyama, Butityi Konki, Zwai Bala and Danie Gerber.

Hardworking students graduate at Ray Mhlaba Skills Centre NCEBA DLADLA SKILLS training is vital for employment creation and economic development in South Africa. So said Nedbank Foundation’s Divisional Executive for Corporate Social Investment, Kone Gugushe, at a graduation ceremony held at the Raymond Mhlaba Skills Training Centre last Thursday. An upbeat Gugushe said that Nedbank had donated R300 000 for 11 students to get trained in Tourism and Hospitality as well as Early Childwood Development.

There were also students who graduated in Woodwork and Carpentry, which was important for entrepreneurship development, according to Gugushe. “It is interesting that the majority of the graduates here are women. Women have an ability to multi-task and nurture,” noted Gugushe. She said Nedbank was encouraged to assist in education because they could see the Return-On-Investment. One of the graduates Lumka Mbutye (24) from Central in Port Elizabeth already started (last Friday) as a Pastry Chef at All-in-One Hotel in Cape Town last Friday. “I am overjoyed. This is the begin-

ning of a new life and better things for me,” she said. Caroline Ferreira of the ECDC was praised for her work. Mandisa Zenzile said they succeeded because of hard work, perseverance and determination. “It is important that women are skilled, trained and placed in positions of authority,” said Gugushe. Nedbank Foundation started their involvement with the Raymond Mhlaba Skills Training in 2009. They started with the training of ECD Levels 1, 4 and 5 and after their graduation they trained another intake in 2010 where we offered R500 000 funding,” said Ntuli.

Students learn while helping community in first ‘Living Lab’ IN a win-win situation for all concerned, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) has established Nelson Mandela Bay’s first “living lab” in Motherwell. Both the Emmanuel Haven for children affected and infected by HIV/ Aids in the township and students from NMMU will greatly benefit from the innovative initiative to bring research, knowledge and caring together in one environment. The “Living Lab” concept is part of an official Memorandum of Understanding signed between the haven and university earlier this year and a pilot project towards greater involvement in the future. A new computer laboratory at the haven in which community members and home-based care workers will be receiving computer literacy

training by NMMU students is but one of the benefits of the new partnership. “We are integrating the living lab into our support-services curriculum so that all our students get involved hands-on with training and support. “From a postgraduate research perspective, this initiative allows our PhD and masters students to make a real difference through the research they conduct,” says the university’s Professor Darelle van Greunen of the School of Information and Communication Technology. But that hands-on involvement – as encouraged in the university’s value of Ubuntu – is already underway since NMMU has facilitated research to establish the needs of the community, and its students are also busy with the cabling and networking necessary for

the 20 computers being installed in the laboratory. “It’s a win-win scenario. Provisional findings of the research already show the need for ICT skills training, particularly among the youth, but there’s so much more that the university will be able to do to help,” said Prof van Greunen, whose own research in mobile phone applications has already been of great assistance to impoverished and rural communities. Twenty youth members of the Motherwell community, who were trained by NMMU researchers, interviewed some 431 home-based care workers and 1500 households in Motherwell. Further help from NMMU will be multi-disciplinary and includes the likes of health sciences, business, and agriculture.

Tyali came, auditioned and got the job! Tyali, who stays in Framesby in Port Elizabeth, is Bay TV’s camera man and news editor, has only fond memories of his initiation into the Community Television Station which he now sees as a growing brand that entertains, informs and educates the community of Nelson Mandela Bay. Starting out as a camera man he soon widened his horisons to become news editor. Tyali starts the day by looking at interesting news-ideas with the news field-workers and reporters. He also files what would be the diary of the day, before he goes out to shoot news segments, returns to the office to package and edit the material for news clips, bulletins and features.

Growing up in KwaMagxaki, Tyali matriculated from Grey High School. Armed with a Diploma in Sound Engineering and Video Editing from Damelin College as well as a Media Studies qualification from Boston College, Tyali developed his passion for broadcasting after working as a Sports Show host at Bay FM - where he first cut his teeth in the media business, “I think the media studies gave an in-depth knowledge of all I wanted to know about media and am glad I did the course,” said Tyali. “The media has such an influence in the lives of the people. It informs and uplifts the communities,” said Tyali. He said that he was especially fascinated and driven by stories of people and individuals in desperate situations, whose lives they have impacted upon positively - and when they come back to say ‘thank you.’ “Local television is good in that it gives local communities an opportunity to see their stories told. I like that. I’d also like to see the station growing in leaps and bounds, to tell more stories that will uplift the communities,” said Tyali.

The KwaNobuhle former boxer and promoter, Mfama is waiting in the wings for big business to sponsor his Major boxing bill - a 12-round South African Flyweight Title fight between champion Doctor Ntsele and mandatory challenger Motswake Moselesele, both of the Free State. Mfama, who intends promoting the

fight here in Nelson Mandela Bay or in the Makana Local Municipality is also hoping to have the fight beamed live on SABC Sport - now that television has agreed to flight boxing matches again after a long blackout. But the long wait for sponsorship and television delays Mfama’s aim of having Ndwayana of Grahamstown fighting for the South African Welterweight title; or at least the WBO International Welterweight championship. “Ndwayana is the champion in the making. We can’t delay him,” said Mfama.
