Backyard dwellers counted T NCEBA DLADLA

HE plight of backyard shack dwellers is currently being addressed by the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality which yesterday launched a project aimed at housing thousands of these homeless people.

A database of the possible recipients of this infrastructural development programme, which forms part of the municipality’s Integrated Development Plan (IDP), is currently being compiled. The campaign was launched at a meeting held at the Babs Madlakane Community Hall, KwaNobuhle in Uitenhage yesterday under the theme: The New Beginning; a Better life. Nelson Mandela Bay Executive Mayor Zanoxolo Wayile and the Human Settlement Directorate officials informed the residents of its strategy and implementation plan which starts as early as the 23 October with the counting of backyard dwellers including households with overcrowding problems. Shack dwellers remain a huge challenge for the municipality. They live in poor conditions, experience waterborne sewerage systems which are overloaded and frequently experience blockages and surges. Another problem is that of people grabbing any land, which is not always suitable for habitation, to build shacks; the so called Ukundlova (tak-

ing by force). The mayor said they were coming back to the communities as a followup to the promise they made during the IDP Consultative meetings - to come back. “We are here to talk to you about new developments taking place in the country - and here in the metro,” said Cllr Wayile. Explaining, the mayor said those developments, which he referred to as a catalyst for economic development and job creation, are about infrastructural development plans which will cost government billions of rands. “Those strategic development initiatives will benefit municipalities through the building of sustainable human settlements. We know we have a backlog of 81 000 houses. But we are not just going to build houses. We’ll build integrated settlements with all the social amenities,” said mayor Wayile, adding that his municipality is a signatory to the Intergovernmental Forum with other spheres of government to ensure the success of this plan. Nelson Mandela Bay Human Settlements Director Simiselo Nogampula explained the processes leading to the appointment of fieldworkers on a stipend to assist the process of counting the beneficiaries. “We are working closely with Stats SA to ensure the credibility of the process. Please do assist with information when fieldworkers come. We don’t want anybody to be left behind,” said Nogampula, adding that they are hoping for a process that will be free from fraud and corruption.

THE BEAUTIFUL GAME IN THE BAY

There was great excitement last week when Nelson Mandela Bay hosted the Absa Premiership match between the Phefeni Glamour Boys Kaizer Chiefs and Bloemfontein Celtic. Soccer supporters pitched up in droves at the Port Elizabeth International Airport to welcome their teams. Among them were, from left, Ludwe Bomali, Themba Ntembi and Simphiwe Jama who left noone in any doubt about which team they support. Unfortunately for them, a resilient Sewelele (Celtic) denied the unbeaten Amakhosi a sixth win in seven outings before a near capacity crowd in the 45 000 seater stadium. Full story on page 8. Pier 14 looking for ambassadors at fashion show Pier 14 in Port Elizabeth is on the lookout for young ambassadors to become the face of the shopping centre for the next 12 months. Mr and Miss Pier 14, for which entries close on Friday, is open to youngsters between the ages of seven and 21, and 10 finalists will be chosen in each of the four age categories. Finalists will be groomed and then take part in the annual fashion show, which doubles as the gala evening for the pageant, on November 3. According to Sophia Steyn, the spokesperson for centre management, there would be loads of prizes on offer from participating stores, with the senior winners getting the chance to act as centre representatives. “With this in mind, we’ve introduced a category for 19 to 21-year-olds.” She said they were looking for persons with a fun outlook on life and a “vibey” personality - qualities that personify the traits of their clientele. “The judging panel will be looking for people with confidence and personality - so just be yourself!” Steyn said winners’ duties would include handing out prizes at live draws, like this year’s “Win a Kitchen” and “Find your Furniture” pro-

motions, as well as getting involved with Pier 14’s charitable beneficiaries like Hannah’s Arms and Thamsanqa. She said entrants could obtain entry forms from any of Pier 14’s clothing tenants. “They will need to bring their form plus a full-length photo and R50 entry fee to the centre management offices on the third floor by Friday.” Participants younger than 18 would need signed consent from a parent or guardian, said Steyn. Finalists would be contacted telephonically by Wednesday, October 17, at the latest, she said. “They must make themselves available for fittings and rehearsals.” Steyn said the show itself would take place from 10am to 2pm outside the Fashion King store. “This is our biggest promotion for the year and audiences will get a chance to see the very latest summer fashions available in our stores. “We’ll start the show with some beautiful evening dresses and suits. There’ll be dancers and more surprises happening on the day, so you don’t want to miss out!” The winners of the “Cash in on Fashion” consumer promotion, which coincides with the competition, will be drawn at the show.

She said that anyone can grow a vegetable garden, anywhere. “All you need is space as big as the top of a desk, or even the inside of a tyre. You also don’t need to separate your crop - you can plant different vegetables together in one patch. People think one needs a lot of space to plant, but the fact is that you don’t need a lot of space to grow vegetables that can feed a community.” Ntsundwana has translated her passion for gardening into a means of transferring a skill to the community at large, which will inevitably ensure that they can feed themselves. NELSON Mandela Bay is strengthening its

image as an automotive manufacturing mecca by hosting the SA Automotive Week, which is the only dedicated automotive components industry showcase in South Africa, this week. The SA Automotive Week is the first international expo for the new Boardwalk convention centre, and is being held from today until Friday. “This will be the first of many international conventions and expos to be hosted in the new venue, which is part of a R1 billion investment in Nelson Mandela Bay by empowerment leisure company, Emfuleni Resorts,” said Boardwalk general manager, Clifford Ngakane. Completion of construction of parts of the new Boardwalk Convention Centre and Hotel complex in Port Elizabeth has enabled South African Automotive Week (SAAW) to return to its original venue at The Boardwalk. “We hosted the first South African Automotive Week Tradeshow at The Boardwalk in 2007, but outgrew the venue. With the international and local interest in the 2012 edition, no venue in the province has been big enough to accommodate the 10 000 square metres tradeshow and a host of related automotive meetings and activities,” said Andrew Binning, director of SAAW 2012. “Fortunately, the Boardwalk was able to open up to us an underground level of a new international standard convention centre. The venue offers a number of advantages in terms of accessibility to the main hotels, parking and other facilities, such as restaurants and coffee shops,” said Binning. Over 300 exhibitors are expected to be showcasing their products and equipment. There will be delegations from Thailand, China, the United Kingdom, Eastern Europe and the United States, while individuals from a number of other countries have also registered, according to Binning. National pavilions will showcase the industry in KwaZulu-Natal, Gauteng, the North West, the East London Industrial Development Zone (IDZ), and the Coega IDZ. A 270-square-metres Coega IDZ pavilion will be one of the highlights of the expo, according to Binning. Kevin Hustler, CEO of the Nelson Mandela Bay Business Chamber, said that the automotive sector is the strongest pillar of the Nelson

played within their communities in projects outside the classroom. Staying true to its brand values “to inform, involve and inspire”, Argo decided to start the Stars in Education project in 2008. Made possible by the on-going sponsorship of such companies as Cell C, Mindset Learn, Metro FM, The Star Newspaper, Macmillan and the Transnet Foundation, these well-known and sustaining brands along with new 2013 partner, TSB Sugar lend even further credibility to the initiative.

Mandela Bay economy. “A trade show of this calibre goes a long way to stimulating and sustaining the automotive sector as the backbone of the Eastern Cape economy. As an international trade show that brings together key industry stakeholders, South African Automotive Week is a feather in the cap of Nelson Mandela Bay,” Hustler said. “SAAW has a broader impact on the events, tourism and hospitality industry, and is an excellent opportunity to leverage the brand of Nelson Mandela Bay. We look forward to welcoming and hosting the many delegates from around the country and the world,” said Hustler. Mandlakazi Skefile, Chief Executive of Nelson Mandela Bay Tourism, said that they were grateful that this event was being hosted in Nelson Mandela Bay. “This event proves that NMB is capable of hosting such events and with the development taking place at The Boardwalk, this city will attract more of these kinds of events.” Skefile added that hosting this event is not only about showcasing the city’s automotive industry, but also about showcasing what the city has to offer from a tourism point of view. “We encourage delegates to arrive either a day earlier or leave a day later so as to allow them to explore a bit about the city. The organizers also made use of the event, not only to showcase the industrial/manufacturing components but also to make use of the various events to show off the natural and tourism assets of the city such as the gala dinner that will take place on the beach in Happy Valley. “Hosting this event will not only boost the tourism but may also lead to future investment as some delegates, when attending these conferences, get to be exposed in many investment opportunities.” She said that it was a proven fact that when delegates attended a conference or exhibition, they were most likely to return with their families for a holiday experience in a period of about 5 years. “Nelson Mandela Bay Tourism works very closely with the National Convention Bureau and it is our endeavour to play our part in attracting as many conferences and exhibitions in the city as possible so as to contribute what has been set as targets to be achieved by Team South Africa. The intention of the National Convention Bureau is to position South Africa as a meetings destination of choice.”

Health department acts to prevent circumcision deaths NCEBA DLADLA THE Eastern Cape Department of Health (DOH) has taken a bold move aimed at reducing the number of deaths associated with traditional circumcision. This, after 47 deaths of initiates undergoing this rite of passage to manhood were recorded in the province last year. A group of 31 professional nurses responsible for the oversight of this rite have been undergoing specialised training in preventing and stopping bleeding in boys suffering from haemophilia. Haemophilia is a bleeding disorder that affects mainly males, and about one in 10 000 boys. Richard Johnson, of Novo Nordisk Haemophilia Foundation which is funding the training, believes some of the initiate deaths could be as a result of bleeding complications.

Circumcision ceremonies are conducted twice annually with about 55 000 youths participating in the ceremonies. This means that out of every intake, statistically, six could be haemophiliacs. “Haemophilia management is essential because it will eliminate any stigma that is attached to boys when they go to hospital to get their clotting factors,” said Circumcision Programme Manager Mzukisi Mawonga. Mawonga, who was in charge of selecting the training candidates, believes it will be possible for the initiates to get their factors while they are in their circumcision lodges with minimised risks. He said the programme will benefit communities. “The boys must also tell us about these conditions before they go for circumcision because we can now ensure they are safe while still maintaining respect for traditions,” said DOH Spokesperson Sizwe Kupelo who also believes that the programme will benefit communities.

More success for Hope Factory’s entrepreneurs NCEBA DLADLA ACCORDING to the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) report a startling 2.6% of South Africans who try their hand at entrepreneurship survive to the 3½ year mark. The rest fail dismally and disappear without trace. But why? Of course, the reasons are well documented; ranging from lack of skills, limited access to markets, no seed capital, lack of experience and insufficient selfconfidence among others. To ensure this is not the case, the Hope Factory hosted two important events where future entrepreneurs got an opportunity to grow their enterprises while in another event Capital Investments were presented to entrepreneurs on the Hope Factory Entrepreneur Support Programme. “For the first time, we opened the doors of the Hope Hub, our incubator facility in North End, to the public where the Hope Hub Entrepreneurs showcased their unique hand-made products,” said Hope Factory Marketing, Events and Communications Manager Jolandi Snyders. “The Hope Hub has made a positive impact in terms of business growth in many aspects . . . an increase in customers with lots of connections and potential business deals,” said Sipho Ntlangu, one of the Hope Hub entrepreneurs. Ntlangu added that he was happy as many people are now aware of his business. “There is great potential to increase sales and to make profits,” he said proudly. In addition to the Open Day, the Hope Factory is also celebrating their investment in their entrepreneurs’ businesses by hosting an Entrepreneur Day, which sees enterprises being awarded capital investments ranging from raw material, stock and marketing material, to specialised equipment and training in

line with the unique needs of the enterprise or entrepreneur. “Entrepreneur days at the Hope Factory are always days of inspiration, as existing entrepreneurs re-

ceive Capex investments, and newly registered businesses receive start up investments into their businesses,” said Jackie Gossman, Senior Executive: Training and Mentoring.

New training academy in PE for the disabled ABOUT 60 disabled people from Port Elizabeth and surrounds will be trained in the next year providing them with a recognised qualification as well as boosting their chances of employment. This was revealed by Alison Smeeton, MD of I CAN, the lead partner of Production Management Institute’s (PMI) national disability academy programme which recently added the Port Elizabeth disability academy to its national footprint. Said Smeeton: “When our PE site is running at full capacity in January 2013, we will be able to accommodate 90 disabled learners at any one time.

Our intakes typically include people who are physically or intellectually disabled, as well as those with hearing impairments. “The training involves both a structured learning component, mainly through a learnership, as well as practical work experience. We also assist with job carving, on-site support to employers and disability sensitization among teams. “For participating employers, such learnerships offer a structured intervention that integrates the disabled with their workplace and in so doing impacts positively on disability-related equity and skills develop-

ment targets.” Smeeton expressed her distress at South African employers’ failure to meet government’s 2% disability target which she said left disabled people marginalised with little prospect of being integrated into mainstream society through the workplace. “The workplace is the one environment where genuine integration of disabled people into the mainstream can take place and it is shameful that public and private employers are not making more effort on this issue,” said Smeeton. “The consequences are being felt every day by well over 5% of South

Africans – the proportion of our population estimated to be disabled – who remain not only jobless, but marginalised from mainstream society as there are just not enough employment opportunities open to them. “South Africans with an intellectual disability are even worse off because of the myth that people with disability have no ability.” Smeeton called on employers in and around PE to “get on board and sponsor an academy learnership”. “There are rewards for employers that embrace disability such as points on the BBBEEE scorecard and tax rebates through SARS.”

She said that although the Minister for Women, Children and People with Disabilities Lulu Xingwana had extended the deadline for public and private employers to meet the 2% target to March 2013 she didn’t believe it could be met. “There is a lack of knowledge on how to include disabled people in the workplace, and coupled with ignorance and fear, companies are just not making the effort.” In the past year, PMI’s disability academies have put some 350 disabled learners through learnerships with about 30% of these graduates already integrated into the workplace.

SOUTH Africa could be a better place to live in if all of us possessed the heart that Nomtha Notshe possessed. This is the view of Nomtha’s mother, Lwandlekazi Notshe, of Bluewater Bay in Port Elizabeth. Nomtha, a Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University BCom COF student, celebrated her 21st birthday recently. Instead of asking for expensive presents from her teacher parents, Lungile and Lwandlekazi Notshe, the lass asked for clothing and dolls to donate to an orphanage of her choice. The parents were dumbfounded, but obliged. “She took all of us by surprise. I did not

We were so amazed but duly supported her,” said Nomtha’s father, Lungile, who is Phakamisa High School principal. She learnt that sharing is caring from her mother Lwandlekazi, who helps some of her needy learners with shoes, jerseys and school uniforms. “I wish everyone would try and do something for the less fortunate. This world would be such a better place - for all of us,” said Lwandlekazi. And Nomtha’s friend who she grew up with, Kayise Tshemese, and high school friend, Sazikazi Mzimela, described Nomtha as a good friend, sociable and loving. “She is a gift to humanity,’ said Tshemese.

Score update in the NEBFA Sedgars Sport Premier League SELBY MADIKANE IT was a question of “no guts, no glory” when New Brighton Football Association (NEBFA) Sedgars Sport Premier League games took place at New Brighton Oval Stadium from 29 to 30 September. Bold Tigers triumphed over Boast Pirates 1-0, while CCX Callies beat Red City 2-1. Dodgers drew 1-1 with Winter Rose, while Eastern Jumpers emerged winners with a score of 2-1 over Stinging Bees. City Lads, known as Gunners, were overflowing with confidence when they snatched a 1-0 hard-fought

victory over PE United. City Defenders showed their mettle in their well-deserved 3-0 victory over Pondo Stars.

Bucs hammers Real Aces 17-0

SELBY MADIKANE IT looked like a Royal Bucs practice session when they beat the very inexperienced Real Aces 17-0 in front of their dismayed and disappointed supporters during their SAFA Nelson Mandela Bay SAB Regional League clash at Motherwell NU 9 Stadium on 29 September.

Following their recent 7-0 drubbing by Crystal Palace, Aces have conceded 24 goals in just two outings. As things stand, Aces need to put their house in order to avoid a drop to a lower league or to be in abeyance. Bucs star defender Thamsanqa Gwabeni was played as a striker as he scored 10 goals for his side. The other Bucs goals were scored by Si-

phosethu Seti with a hattrick, Thamsanqa Tsewana a brace, and Nkosinathi Gawulana and Zandisile Tsewana with a goal each.

NUBS PROVE CRITICS WRONG SELBY MADIKANE ZAKHELE Football Association (ZAFA) Premier League’s newly promoted side, Njoli United Brothers (NUBS), have proved the football critics wrong. NUBS convincingly overpowered one of ZAFA Premier League’s high-riding sides, Brazil Brothers, with a comfortable victory of 3-0. In a highly contested affair, BUBS managed to collect three

points through their 1-0 victory over Golden Brothers. Despite giving up a good fight, Santos, affectionately known as AmaRabaxa suffered a 4-3 loss to Zamazama. Ghetto XI had to throw everything into the game in order to secure a 2-1 win over United Comrades. , Leeds United 1-1 XI Angels , Young Neighbours 1-2 Continental Express , Happy Stars 0-1 Seven United , Juventus 0-1 Dynamos

SELBY MADIKANE FANS and soccer experts could not predict the winner between Shining Stars and the newly promoted Young Ideas because both outfits played their hearts out during their Motherwell Football Association (MOFA) Build It Premier League clash at NU 9 Stadium on September 30. Stars were the only side that collected the three maximum points following their 1-0 hard-fought victory over their neighbours thanks to a

goal by Siyanda Mani. Despite the Stars goal, Ideas kept knocking on their opponents’ door. But Stars defender Thozamile Rasta-man Roji was tenacious and resolute. MOFA Build It Premier League champions Kamva Movers thrashed the newcomers Channel Porto 5-1, while another rookie team, City Rangers, held Real Strikers to a goalless draw. In another entertaining game, Lion Stars edged out Young Madrid 2-1. Other MOFA Build It Premiership results:

Fixtures of Super Rugby 2013 revealed TANYA VAN ZYL

R

UGBY fanatics from the Friendly City and surrounds will be able to see their rugby heroes up close and live when the Vodacom Super Rugby series heads to Port Elizabeth next year. Eight games in total will be played at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium, with the first match being played on

February 23. The Southern Kings will host the Western Force from Australia in the last match of the second round of the competition. Kick off will be at 7.10pm (local time). The other teams that can be seen in action on home soil are the Sharks, Chiefs, Bulls, Waratahs, Highlanders, Cheetahs and the Stormers. According to a South African Rugby Union (Saru) media release, the

Vodacom Super Rugby was last played in the region 13 years ago. “The Coastal Sharks played one match in Port Elizabeth in 1998 and a second in 1999, as well as one match in East London in the latter year.” The Vodacom Super Rugby Finals Series starts on Friday, July 19, with the Super Rugby Qualifiers scheduled for that weekend – while the Super Rugby Semi-Finals will take

place on 26/27 July, with the Super Rugby Final to be played on Saturday, August 3.

The eight games that will be played at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium are as follows:

Saturday, 23 February – Kings vs Force Saturday, 9 March – Kings vs Sharks Friday, 15 March – Kings vs Chiefs Saturday, 20 April – Kings vs Bulls Saturday, 4 May – Kings vs Waratahs

Chiefs drawn battle against Celtic records best PSL attendance NCEBA DLADLA THE Phefeni Glamour Boys Kaizer Chiefs played to a goalless draw in their Absa Premiership match against Bloemfontein Celtic at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Port Elizabeth on Saturday. A resilient Sewelele (Celtic) denied the unbeaten Amakhosi a sixth win in seven outings before a near to capacity crowd of this 45 000 seater stadium. Clinton Larsen’s boys did not allow Chief’s strikers any space before goals while it was Amakhosi’s finishing touches that let them

down on few occasions, especially in the second half. Not even the vociferous crowd could spur coach Stuart Baxter’s boys into putting the ball behind the net. Chiefs will however be happy to know that with Orlando Pirates 3-1 victorious against Pretoria University over the weekend, Amakhosi will be crowned the inaugural Q-Innovation First Quarter of the Season winners. They are leading the pack with 17 points behind their name while there is no team that could go past them after eight matches required to bag the award. Pirates are currently at 12 points after the same number of games.

Meanwhile Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium’s Management are very “happy and excited” about the the crowds that attended the match. While not all levels of the stadium were filled to capacity, according to Bulie Ngomane, the people that came apparently from all the corners of the Eastern Cape “made us very proud.” Added Ngomane: “The crowd was very cheerful, supportive and well-behaved. With this kind of support, the teams could well be coming back to play their matches here. We want to thank soccer lovers of the province for their support.”

Saturday, 11 May – Kings vs Highlanders Saturday, 25 May – Kings vs Cheetahs Saturday, 6 July – Kings vs Stormers

Some extra information:

S The season runs from February 15, 2013 until the Vodacom Super Rugby Final on August 3, 2013. S The season will consist of 125 matches. The PE Express will publish ticket prices and other info closer to the time.
