Motherwell arson victims demand justice and Ryan Lea accepted and signed the petition on behalf of Senior Public Prosecutor Reinet Grobelaar. Meanwhile, Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Dumile Gwavu denied allegations that police are not doing their work. “Police will arrest anyone if given information about crime being committed. The fact that people are not arrested means there is no information linking them to the crime,” said W/O Gwavu. He added: “People who are out on bail have already been to court - the law has taken its course there. Bail is granted when everything else has been considered and the State finds no reason not to grant it.”

OTHERWELL’s NU29 residents whose houses were burnt down as a result of the political infighting between the alleged followers of Nelson Mandela Bay Mayor Zanoxolo Wayile and ANC Regional Chairperson Nceba Faku marched from NU11 Stadium to hand over a petition to the Senior Public Prosecutor in the Regional Court in Motherwell last Thursday. About 400 disgruntled residents were singing and toy- toying claiming that no action is taken against some of the perpetrators of violence who vandalised and destroyed their homes and belongings; and left their dreams shattered on that fateful day on August 27. The residents claim that police are not doing their work - or are instead taking sides in the strife. “Some of the perpetrators of this heinous crime against our Human Rights were arrested. But we were astounded to see them walk free while we have lost everything in the fire they made for us and our children,” said group leader Mpho Mtila. Siphiwo Vumenjani and his wife Zusakhe (both 35 years) also claim that they know the people who attacked them at their home in Savu Street but are disappointed in the criminal justice system which allows that “those people are roaming the streets as if they have done nothing.”

qualifications. I missed out on an employment opportunity at VW recently because I cannot produce my ID and qualification certificates,” he said. “I was called Faku’s dog. My
three little girls, who are still traumatised, now have to stay with friends because they do not have a home. I am a member of the ANC and not anyone’s follower or dog!” said single mother Nomakula Mge (37). Prosecutors Themba Mavakala

NCEBA DLADLA A MAN from KwaNobuhle in Uitenhage is in a serious condition in hospital after he was brutally assaulted by members of the community for allegedly sexually assaulting a 5-year old boy on Saturday 22 September. According to police reports, the 32 year-old man was first greeted as a hero when he brought the child to his father who was looking for the boy for more than an hour after he disappeared without trace. “The boy was playing with other children while the father was busy during a traditional ceremony in Mohlontlo Street, KwaNobuhle,” said police spokesperson Lt. Col. Priscilla Naidu. The father started looking for the boy at about 4 pm when he realised that he was missing. The community search started and at about 5.45pm they saw the boy walking with the suspect. The community was grateful at the time, according to Naidu. But when he left, the boy told his father that the suspect sexually assaulted him in the nearby bushes. “The suspect who was still in the vicinity was apprehended by the boy’s father. He attempted to run but was overpowered by members of the community and assaulted. He was then hospitalised. The boy was also hospitalised, said Lt. Col. Naidu. She said a rape case is under investigation while the suspect is expected in court soon.

For Joy Strydom sleeping was her worst nightmare until she discovered the Sleep Active mattress. Strydom said for eight years she woke up during the early hours of the morning with the most terrible body ache one could imagine. “My whole body was aching – hips, neck, legs and back – and I had terrible headaches. But thanks to Sleep Active, she is now pain free. No more limping and she can even “jump” on the bed, “and I do that every time I visit this shop, just to show what this bed has done for me.” Joy first bought the Sleep Active overlay, but when she woke up at only 7am the next morning, she immediately phoned the shop and said she wanted the bed. “I couldn’t believe the change in my life after sleeping on that bed for one night,” said Joy. Owner of the Sleep Active branch in Moffett on Main Lifestyle Centre, Brent Ah Kee, said Sleep Active was the first South African company to manufacture Memory
Foam products in SA suitable for the South African Climate. They own the trade-mark Memory Foam. “Memory foam allows your body to mould into the bed. It allows the body to sink into the bed, which then supports your body, said Brent. Sleep Active matrasses have no weight restriction and comfort is assured. It has zero upward pressure, is dust mite free, allergy free, can be made in special and custom sizes, is certified spring fee and has unsurpassed durability. It provides a weightless sleep environment and zero partner motion disturbance. It offers a deeper, unbroken sleep and optimum sleeping comfort with up to 80% less tossing and turning. It has the optimum body recovery results and alleviates joint, neck and muscular pain. Over 200 medical practitioners recommend the Sleep Active products to their patients. “The stores are called comfort clinics, because of the therapeutic benefits of the business. A large portion of our business comes from patients from physiotherapists, chiropractors, biokineticists and orthotists,” said Brent. “I had a car accident years ago and since then I have always been aware of what I sleep on,” said Brent. “I am not a born salesman, but the product sells itself. The fact that Sleep Active is also recommended by the arthritis foundation, was an important factor which made me decide to bring this product home to the Eastern Cape,” said Brent. Sleep Active stock a wide variety of mattresses, overlays, pillows and lumbar supports. Promise of houses is ‘political ploy’ PE EXPRESS REPORTER THE MEC for Human Settlements, Helen Sauls-August, needs to explain in detail how a plan for the eradication of the housing backlog of 71 000 units in the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro by 2016 will be rolled out and whether it is realistically achievable. This was said by Dacre Haddon, Member of the Provincial Legislature and DA Spokesperson on Housing, who will be asking at this week’s meeting of the Portfolio Committee of Human Settlements for a detailed report of this ambitious plan as announced by the National Department of Human Settlements recently. “The plan would need to give specifics about staff and contractor capacity, timeframes and budget costing,” said Haddon. He said the eradication of the housing backlog of 71 000 units in the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro by 2016, is not achievable within the current capacity of the municipality. He said by making such a pronouncement one is creating hope among beneficiaries and communities that may not materialise. “It is unacceptable and unfair to play on the hopes and emotions of vulnerable citizens in this way. “This is a political ploy by the ruling party to secure votes ahead of the 2016 council elections in which there is a real chance the ruling party will lose power in this metro,” said Haddon. Currently the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro can’t attain building targets of 3 500 units per annum. “I have been informed by my coun-
cillor colleague in the metro that the backlog figure is closer to 91 000 units. If one adds to this a further 40 000 houses that need rectification, the real housing backlog in this metro is 130 000 units.” “With all municipalities and metros under financial strain the cost to build 90 000 houses at R100 000 per unit will be R900 million (excluding rectification costs), an unaffordable amount in any current budget.” Haddon said to build 90 000 units in three years would equate to constructing 30 000 units a year which is 10 times more than what is being achieved as an annual metro housing target at present. In an 11-month period (allowing for a month’s building holidays) and possible delays not accounted for at best, this would equate to building 2 727 units a month or 682 units per week. “This is a tall order given the current staff and contractor capacity within the metro. Haddon believes that what is needed to solve this provincial and national housing backlog is the releasing of well-located land with full services, giving every beneficiary legal tenure of a plot; that there must be more emphasis on building well located, social- and mixed housing rental units; and a greater focus on building houses with alternative technologies and moving away from expensive brick and mortar construction. “By so doing, this creates opportunity and choice for beneficiaries to decide how they wish to be housed and become involved in the building of their houses rather than being passive recipients, as is now the case,” said Haddon.
Dolphin Rally to Beachview this weekend PE EXPRESS REPORTER THOUSANDS of bikers will converge on the Beachview Resort from tomorrow until Sunday when the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality once again plays host to the Dolphin Rally. Cllr Nomhle Mzilikazi, who represented Nelson Mandela Bay Executive Mayor Zanoxolo Wayile at a media launch last week, said the bikers are very welcome in the city since under the leather and the sunglasses and the tough exterior, there is warmth and compassion for the poor and needy. “Last year, the proceeds of R200 000 were used to renovate the Ithemba Special School in Missionvale, making it a much more attractive and a safer place for its learners. Bikers also assisted with fund-raising efforts at various schools,” she added. Gona Puckreesamy, President of the Dolphin Rally Motorcycle Club, said they also donated approximately 250 hygiene packs to the elderly and pensioners. “This year’s charity has not been identified as yet, since it will be done in collaboration with the Executive Mayor to enhance and promote those projects that need the support most. “Something that makes the rally unique is that the weekend is loaded with fun, prizes and lucky draws, as five bikes are up for grabs with the top prize being almost R200 000,” he added. Nelson Mandela Bay Tourism Chief Executive Mandlakazi Skefile said she was looking forward to the activities. “I’ve seen the drags. It is a good vibey event and can definitely be considered as one of the adventure activities in the province. “Let us all invite our friends to take part in the programme and encourage people to contribute money that

School children picket against illegal dumping in New Brighton NCEBA DLADLA PORT Elizabeth school children marched to declare war against illegal dumping on Friday 14 September. About five hundred children from Steven Mazungula, Phillip Nikiwe, KwaFord, Lamani and Pendla Primary Schools carried placards and picketed along Ntshekisa Road in New Brighton. The children and their teachers were part of a campaign by Township Green, a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) from New Brighton. Township Green has identified hotspots in illegal dumping sites at a bar in Mendi Street, in front of the Salvation Army, Pendla Primary School and Newell High School including the Memorial Site in Emlotheni. The newly formed NGO invited officials from the Environmental Health Department in the metro and the four schools to kick-start the first phase of their major campaign
against illegal dumping and filth that’s causing dirt and a stench in many township areas. “We are against the health hazards that our children are being exposed to by people who don’t care about the environment. We want our townships to be clean,” said Township Green leader Sizwe Johnson. He said their aim is to highlight the problem by sensitising children to bad environment and never to tolerate it. Pendla Primary School HOD Makhaya Thabe said they supported Township Green’s initiative because they were also concerned about the filth near schools and residential areas. Johnson said they were introducing ways in which people can rather benefit from making their environment clean. He said they can “reduce, re-use and recycle.” “We want to clean and revamp our areas by planting trees, do landscaping, interior designing and plant banks of greenery so that people can benefit from fruit, vegetables and herbs from their gardens,” said Johnson.

Helping your children stay safe during the school holidays Explain that it is better to walk a slightly longer route down familiar streets, where there is more activity, than taking short-cuts across fields or deserted areas. “On the day, let them call you when they leave home and once they have arrived at their destination. Advise your children that if they do happen to find themselves in an unfamiliar street, they should look out for a police or security officer to help them and never accept advice or a ride from a stranger.” With shopping malls also far busier than usual during holidays, Byers says the risk of your children wandering away from you and becoming lost in the hustle and bustle is higher. In a bid to keep them safe he advises that – as a general safety precaution – you help your children memorise their names, surnames, home addresses and contact numbers for at least one parent: “Teach them that if they become separated from you they should immediately look for mall security and give them that information. If your child is readily able to give them these details, the time taken to track down a parent can be reduced dramatically.” In closing Byers says that educating your children about personal safety is very important, especially when the possibility exists that you may not be able to be with them all the time.

THE September school holidays are almost here and, compared to the summer break, it is a much bigger challenge to keep the kids entertained this time of year. For parents who are unable to take time off work or leave their children in the care of someone they trust, any school holiday brings with it the added stress of constantly wondering if your child is safe. Mike Byers, Managing Director of ADT Security in the Eastern Cape has some general tips which parents can pass on to their kids. He says it is important that parents make sure youngsters know to keep all entry and exit doors locked and that no-one is to enter the home without their permission: “If you have a home security system installed, teach them how to activate and de-activate it and how and when to use other security devices like panic buttons. Make a list of important telephone numbers – including the 10111 number - and show them that it has been placed near the telephone for use in emergencies.” Byers says there are also basic rules you can teach your child to follow if they are leaving home to walk to a friend’s house for a visit. “If you usually drive your children to the home of a friend who lives in the same neighbourhood, rather walk the route with them before they have to do it on their own.

Warning: Do not carry large sums of money and walk alone to and from the bank NCEBA DLADLA A STERN warning has been issued to Eastern Cape residents to refrain from carrying large sums of money on their way to and from the bank. Speaking to the media during an awareness campaign held at the Marine Hotel last week Tuesday South African Banking Risk Information Centre (Sabric) Senior Manager Dr. Alice Maree said in the past two to three years banks have noticed an increase in the number of robberies happening in the vicinity of their branches and the targets being people making large cash withdrawals and deposits. Sabric is a Section 21 Company formed by SA banks to combat crime.
“Approximately 75% of incidents of cash robberies of bank clients in the Eastern Cape happened after cash withdrawals,” said Maree, adding that this is mostly between 9am and 10am. According to Maree, organised groups of perpetrators are responsible for these crimes. She said it was incumbent therefore upon all people, small business owners and especially institutions who deal with finances like stokvels, churches and schools to be responsible. “We cannot run away from the fact that there are syndicates involved in this type of crime. We cannot even trust bank employees who might be sending out information. People should be very careful,” said General Jones Mbabala of the SAPS. “Banks emphasise that people do not use cellphones inside the bank. We
hope clients change their attitude and oblige,” said Dr Maree. General Mbabala agreed that cellphones should be switched off inside the banks as those gadgets can be used by criminals masquerading as clients in the queue to take photographs of people withdrawing large amounts of cash and then send the information or their description to their friends outside the bank to lodge an attack on the unsuspecting customer. “This is very serious; perhaps it is time that people should seriously consider the convenience of electronic banking such as internet, cellphone or ATM transfers instead of cash withdrawals,” said Dr. Maree. Otherwise, she said, people carrying cash should be in the company of someone they trust and only withdraw an amount of cash that they need.
SAPS Spokespersons from left W/O Dumile Gwavu (Motherwell), Capt. Stanley Jarvis (Humewood), Lt. Col. Priscilla Naidu (Uitenhage), W/O Gerda Swart (Uitenha ge) and W/O Marianette Olivier (Despatch) were at the Sabric information session gathering. Photo: NCEBA DLADLA

Kholeka relishes singing praises at Nangoza Jebe hall this Friday Gospel diva Kholeka Dubula was in PE to promote the gospel concert at Nangoza Jebe Hall in New Brighton this Friday. Photo: NCEBA DLADLA

episode of the Shell Road to Fame. She told PE Express Indaba how she left home to sing at the funeral of a prominent person in East London in order to get recognition from influential people. Music promoter Koko Godlo was indeed impressed. He phoned his friend Tshepo Nzimande of Bula Music in Johannesburg and the rest, as they say is history. That first time flight to Johannesburg which followed was the beginning of a beautiful music career for the then young Kholeka who also had to leave her studies after a year at Technikon when her father, a mine worker was retrenched. Tickets are still available at Computicket at R150. The show is part of the Eastern Cape Gospel series courtesy of CSun Holding Events.

Kholeka will be part of the Gospel Concert scheduled to take place at Nangonza Jebe Hall in New Brighton, Port Elizabeth this Friday. Other performers on the night include Veliswa Skeyi, Lusanda Mcinga, Kgotso Makgalema and Israel Mosehla. “In fact, it’s not going to be a concert. It’s going to be a church service to give glory and honour to God; it will be a night vigil. We’ll be worshiping and praising God through song all night. We’ll feel the presence of
the Holy Spirit as God Himself will be ministering,” said Kholeka proudly. Kholeka is currently promoting her latest offering “Kuza kudlula”- a 12-track album currently receiving airplay on national radio and television. The self-produced album is testimony to the growth of this married mother and full-time musician as an artist par excellence, a worshipper and a business woman of note. The Joburg-based Kholeka came to fame with the release of her debut album “Kilikiti” which was recorded through Bula Music in 1997. Kholeka has already recorded 10 successful albums to date. Born in Willowvale in the oldTranskei, Kholeka always wanted to be a singer. She was not deterred when she did not succeed in the last

ONE MORE family to feed • ONE MORE frail, older person to be cared for • ONE MORE child to be protected.
UITENHAGE lads Arthur Gray and Bilal Smith have something up their sleeves. The duo from Central, who prefer to be known as Qube and B’ Lew and who are both 29 years old, are breaking new grounds in writing, producing and marketing their music. “And the key is, we are selftaught,” said Qube proudly. The group was formed in September 2009. They started their home-studio from scratch, recorded and produced the album. Describing their music, which they have named Rap and House Fusion, Qube said: “It is a club vibey sound that makes you move your body. Our music does not use profanity. We keep it clean and positive all the time.” Also, instead of outsourcing their design work for the album, this dynamic duo learnt how to use the necessary software pack-
ages; and did it themselves. “Now we have three albums that can sell in any music shop in the country,” said Qube, adding that these albums were just a learning exercise while entertaining people at the same time. “We have also released a music video for the song “Poofy-Club Mix” taken from our latest release,” said B’Lew, adding that they used much of their savings to make sure that they achieve their aims. Their music can be viewed via the internet as well as on mobile devices “In fact, the reason why we do what we are doing is to show that there is a lot of talent in Uitenhage. We, as young people can achieve anything that we set our sights on,’ said Qube. Their immediate plans is to perform in gigs and shows to entertain people. And, with the knowledge they have acquired, they think that they are ready to record a real music album in October.

grammes, community theatre, or for workshops. The judges said the building makes a permanent statement of architectural excellence in that it contrasts with historical design approaches within a ‘township’ environment, making this centre a culturally receptive iconic building with which the community can associate as well as derive a sense of dignity and pride. The use of the typical South African materials of concrete, wood and slate, and how they have been combined, presents a quality and enduring finish, which is perfect for the context of the building and its uses.

NODEFA holds KO Cup quarterfinals SELBY MADIKANE FANS were treated to a football of high standard during Nobuhle-Despatch Football Association (NODEFA) Pre-season Knockout quarterfinals at Jabavu Stadium, in KwaNobuhle on September 15. New City Stars gave good account of themselves when they triumphed over Uitenhage Stars 1-0 in their en-
terprising clash. Fans were once again kept on their feet when City Style lost 3-2 on penalties to KUBS after a fulltime of 2-2. In another humdinger Really Rangers booked themselves a berth in the NODEFA Pre-season KO semi-finals after beating Golden Chiefs 5-4 on penalties following their fulltime score of 1-1. The hot favourites Highland Spurs pipped Flamingoes 2-1 in their nail-biting game.
Romans drew first blood from Valencia a goal courtesy of Sihlangule Bolo, but their joy was cut short with Siphosethu Mabala scoring an equalizing goal to make the score-line 1-1. Valencia, however, took the lead to 2-1 when Sivuyile Booi unleashed a thunderous shot in the dying moments of the first-half. In the second half the game produced some fireworks with Valencia kept in their territory. Sibusiso Mnto pulled a long range shot to take Romans to 2-2. Romans’ goal seemed to provoke Valencia, with their diminutive striker Phakiso Rampaleng also scoring a long range shot to make the final score 3-2 in favour of Valencia. In another humdinger Tomorrow Stars drew 2-2 with newcomers Young Ideas. FRIENDLY CITY WINS BUILD IT TOURNAMENT
Germans beat EC boxers NCEBA DLADLA
The Friendly City team won the Build It U13 Soccer tournament which was held on Saturday at the New Brighton Oval Stadium. Sixteen teams battled it out for the main prize which comprises 16 kit bags, 16 miniature trophies, one main trophy and one full team kit. The tournament was arranged by Build it to use this muchloved sport as their vehicle to enhance the lives of the youth wherever they have a footprint. “For us U13 Soccer Tournaments aren’t about winning trophies. They’re about building the skills of young boys in a way that gives them hope and shows them that with hard work, dedication and a positive spirit they have the ability to makes their dreams a reality,” said Les Pillay, coordinator of the tournament. THE Amateur Boxing Team from Lower Saxony in Germany won seven out of nine bouts in a tournament held at the Raymond Mhlaba Sports Complex in Motherwell, last Wednesday. The tournament was organised by the EC Amateur Boxing Organisation (ECABO) and the Lower Saxony Boxing Federation as part of a Twinning Agreement between Eastern Cape Government and the State of Lower Saxony to share knowledge and skills in areas of youth development among other things. “The German Team was more experi-
enced and powerful, but our boxers were not disgraced,” said EC Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture (DSRAC) Senior Manager Bafundi Makhubalo. “There is still a long way to go. The German boxers showed a lot of experience and knowledge of Olympic Sport. But we sure can only learn from this,” said Makhubalo. ECABO President Vuyolwethu Mtekwana believes the province is doing well in its development of amateurs as a step to professional level. “But it is time that we go back to the basics. We need to go back to the South African boxing flair - which is distinct but mix it up with Olympic style of boxing.Thenwe’llsucceed,”saidMtekwana.
