HE informal settlement Silvertown in the Nelson Mandela Bay metropole is the worst township in the country.

This was announced by Pali Lehohla, Statistician General of Statistics South Africa (Stats SA), on Monday. “Silvertown is far worse than any other place in South Africa,” said Lehohla. In Silvertown there are about 1 775 people in 508 households. Approximately 96% of residents use the bucket toilet system, while only 3% of people have flush toilets. This is in contrast to the national average of 2 out of every 100 people who make use of the bucket toilet system,

Lehohla pointed out. Here 82% of people are living in shacks and 82% of them use paraffin as a source of energy. By contrast, 77% of the adjacent neighbourhood, Kwazakhele, has access to electricity, while 85% of all households in the country have access to electricity, Lehohla said. A plus point is that 74% of Silvertown’s residents have access to potable water (through communal taps) compared with no access to water in 1996. The neighbourhood is poor and 48% of the population have no access to any form of income. Mabel Kula (59) has lived in Silvertown for 25 years and dreams about having lights at the flip of a switch in her home. She does not complain because she fetches water from a com-

munal tap, as it is located close to her shack. “I was shocked to hear that our township is the worst in the country. We also want houses and electricity,” Kula said. Kula’s neighbour, Margaret Jantjies (57), prefers that the municipality first supply electricity to their shacks before building formal houses in the area. According to the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro’s integrated development plan there are 23 000 households that use the bucket toilet system. Furthermore, the housing backlog is approximately 80 000 units. Leon de Villiers, DA caucus leader in the metro, said the municipality’s statistics for the bucket toilet system is based on the bucket toilets that they service and not the other approximately 15 000 bucket toilets used by resi-

dents that squat on private ground. “It is unacceptable to expect people to make use of the humiliating bucket toilet system. The metro’s single strategy for eradicating the bucket toilet system with the supply of houses is inadequate and will take over 20 years to complete.” Kupido Baron, municipal spokesperson, said in defence that overcrowding hampered development in the area. “We concede that the plan to improve the lives of the residents of the area over the years was thwarted by various obstacles,” he said. “Some of the families need to be moved to Wells Estate to provide enough space for the construction of houses. The community is against moving because they want to remain in Silvertown,” said Baron.

Tariff increase in metro higher than inflation HELGA VAN STAADEN THE proposed tariff increase for municipal services in the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro is higher than the inflation rate. The increases include water, sanitation, property rates and refuse removal - all of which will increase by 13%, while electricity is expected to increase by 7%. This is according to the 2013-’14 draft budget which was submitted at last Thursday’s special council

meeting. In the debate, Leon de Villiers, DA caucus leader, described the proposed 13% increases as a “bitter pill”. He said they would be willing to support the draft budget if fundamental problems such as the theft of electricity and water leaks are resolved. “Residents and businesses pay for electricity stolen and R137 million worth of water that is lost. Then there are the long suspensions of staff. “It is immoral that residents and businesses are required to pay for this. Come up with

a plan to correct the inefficiencies. “We can not ask people to pay while our resources are being managed poorly. If we fix water leaks, we will save money and there will be no need for increases,” he said. In support of De Villiers’s motion Gustav Rautenbach, DA chief whip in the metro, said the metro needlessly lost over R250 million through its inefficiency. “This includes R100 million for claims by residents, R21 million in legal fees for the lawsuit with the security company Metro Se-

curity, R130 million in outstanding traffic fines and what about the ongoing Vodacom/ MTN saga?” he pointed out to council. With regard to the water leaks Chippa Ngcolomba, deputy mayor, said young people were appointed as plumbers in an effort to curb water leaks. Although the municipality will first be holding a public participation process, where residents’ input will be asked, it is highly unlikely that the tariff will be adjusted downwards. The new tariff will be effective from July 1.

Mayor calls for introspection on Freedom Day

DiscoveryourDreams A kaleidoscope of careers awaits you

Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality’s Executive Mayor Benson Fihla made a call to residents today for sincere introspection to determine the role, or lack thereof, towards building the vision of a South Africa that belongs to all. He was speaking at the Freedom Day 19th celebration, at the George Botha Indoor Sport Centre. Dignitaries at the event included ANC Member of Parliament Hope Malgas, ANC Member of the Eastern Cape Provincial Legislature Christian Martin, the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality’s Chief Whip, Cllr Joy Seale, various Mayoral Committee members, including Cllrs Fikile Desi, Andile Mfunda and Thembinkosi Mafana, municipal councillors and officials and residents from various areas of Nelson Mandela Bay. “During this 19th celebration of our freedom we should ask ourselves what we have done, as individuals and communities, to translate into reality the vision that South Africa belongs to all. We should ask ourselves whether we have worked towards the goal of a city whose citizens are equal or whether we have sought to entrench the inequalities of the past,” Mayor Fihla, affectionately known as Oom Ben, said. “Even though all of us know that these challenges are many and big, some among us think that it is solely the responsibility of government to address them. Let us work together to mobilize all our people and continue to engage in the programmes of our city that will bring about change,” he added.

Walk against crime and abuse

With reference to the aim of the Freedom Day Walk against Violent Crime and Abuse of Women and Children that formed part of the programme, Oom Ben stated: “Where there is violence, there can be no development. Where there is violence, there can be no peace. Where there is violence, there can be no progress.” He committed himself and his team of Councillors to an active community engagement

programme, emphasising that there would henceforth be more action and less talk: he and his team of Councillors would spend much more time out in the communities, interacting and engaging with community members, than in boardroom meetings. Teams have already been appointed to focus on challenges and hotspot areas, and the Mayor gave the reassurance that senior management positions in the Municipality, which had long been vacant, would be filled by the end of June, lending stability to the institutions. “Let us remember the major sacrifices that many paid for us to be here today to celebrate the freedom and rights we all enjoy in a democratic South Africa. Let’s walk the road together towards a non-racist and non-sexist and non-violent South Africa!” concluded Mayor Fihla.

Life Mercantile employees still still on on strike strike NCEBA DLADLA EMPLOYEES of Life Mercantile Hospital in Korsten, Port Elizabeth, who embarked on industrial action for better pay on Thursday, April 10 were this week still striking to demand a change of heart from the institution’s management. This was as a result of negotiations between representatives of management and Nehawu, which represents workers, failing to reach an agreement at the bargaining chamber. Nurses working in theatres and wards as well as administration officers belonging to Nehawu are on strike action because of the deadlock in negotiations on three issues,” said the workers’ shop steward. The shop steward said these were a housing subsidy allowance, night duty allowance and R1 000 salary increase across the board. The workers refused a 6,9% salary increase and a 6,6% increase on night duty management that was put on the table. They claim they were told a housing subsidy was a no-no. “Some of the people here have been em-

ployed for more than 25 years - some earn no more than R3 500 per month,” said the steward. The workers told PE Express Indaba that they would continue to toyi- toyi and sing outside the hospital building until management listened and called them back to the negotiations table. Workers claim that these demands were a compromise from what they initially put on the table to Life Mercantile Hospital Management. “Employees have embarked on legal industrial action since Thursday 18 April as an agreement between Nehawu and management of the hospital has not been reached since the start of wage negotiations in December 2012,” said Life Mercantile Hospital Public Relations Officer, Tamara Ncanywa. According to Ncanywa, the hospital management has contingency plans in place to ensure minimal disruption of health care services rendered to patients during the strike action. Said Ncanywa: “Management will continue in their efforts to resolve the deadlock and normalise the day to day running of Life Mercantile Hospital.”

Stadium nightmare for neighbour TINNEKE GOEDHALS

T

HE Nelson Mandela Stadium and local rugby supporters recently received a lot of negative publicity with YouTube videos going viral with footage of two fights that broke out at Southern Kings home rugby matches. Although the Stadium upped their standards with a recently-launched campaign ensuring that the stadium was a fun and safe environment that focused on a violence-free, smoking-free and a responsible drinking zone, it is what is going on outside the stadium that is now a growing concern. Paul Dippenaar and his family, who live in Sydenham across the street from the Nelson Mandela Stadium, had to endure a terrible ordeal when a group of people had a fight in front of their house after the rugby match between the Kings and the Bulls on April 20. In the process the boundary wall of the house in Milner Avenue was destroyed and there was blood all over the steps from the one man injured. According to Dippenaar, a man started the fight by provoking others with his comments.

The fight lasted for about 15 minutes as he continued to make comments and was repeatedly beaten for it. “I have a problem with the fact there was no security, nor were traffic officers or police officers that could, or would assist during the incident,” Dippenaar said. He said several traffic officers drove past, saw what was happening and sped off so as not to get involved. “When the 10111 officers did arrive, we were told that there was nothing they could do as the damage was not intentional,” said Dippenaar. This was the last straw for the Dippenaar family who are already fed up with spectators leaving the stadium and urinating against their house on their way home. “It leaves a horrible smell to have to live with and then we have to clean up afterwards,” said Dippenaar. He is now stuck with having to pay from his own pocket for repairs to the damage to his house. Buli Ngomane, General Manager of Corporate Affairs for Access Management, the stadium operater, said they could not be held liable for an incident in a public street. They have, however, reported Dippenaar’s complaint to the police and traffic officials.

KwaFord residents angry over delay in fixing burst water pipe NCEBA DLADLA PORT Elizabeth residents in KwaFord New Brighton were up in arms against the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality for being without water the whole day last week. Affected streets were Nkapuka, Mabuja and Ranuga including Ithembelihle Comprehensive School. Thobeka Tshezi (60) of Nkapuka Street said when they woke up last Monday they discovered that there was no water in the taps. Going outside she discovered that there was a pipe that had burst which caused a water splash in front of her house. “We phoned the municipality’s service delivery centre and were promised help was coming but to no avail,” said Tshezi, adding that the family struggled the whole day without water. Nopinki Konzani (46) said the whole family including her 81-year old father struggled without water. She was forced to use a bucket to get some water outside for use in the bathroom. “I phoned a couple of times too, using the 0800 20 5050 number and asked to speak to someone who promised that the problem would be attended to shortly - but to no avail. We wonder whether this would have been the

same if the call was from Summerstrand or Lorraine,” said Khaya Mhlantla, a teacher at Ithembelihle. She said the School Management Team had to let learners go home early without water and that disturbed teaching and learning at the school. “I also phoned and was discouraged to find

that they promised and did not come,” said another elder, Patrick Tukani. PE Express Indaba saw the Municipality Water Works employees arriving in their truck at about 5:50 pm. Municipal spokesperson Mthubanzi Miniki con-

firmed that the problem was caused by a burst pipe in Ranuga Street. “The issue of the burst pipe was attended to. We regret that people had to spend such a long time without water,” said Mniki.

Concerned KwaFord neighbours show where the problem lies.

THAMSANQA MBOVANE WOMEN and female pets in KwaNobuhle, Uitenhage, have a new enemy to beware of . . . a very jealous female monkey! This monkey, known as Nomeisie, needs to be kept far away from women and female pets. Its owner, Sipho Matu, from Holomisa in KwaNobuhle, said, “Nomeisie is always in a jealous mood. When a female visitor visits me, Nomeisie has a problem with that. She would climb up the fence, walk through it, stand up, and even give her a vicious look! When she sees a female pet, she does the same thing! “Nomeisie would often give a female dog or female cat a hot klap!” “But when it comes to seeing a man or a male pet, Nomeisie would mingle with them.” The area in Holomisa where Matu stays is surrounded by a huge bush area. Sipho’s neighbour, Nomakula Ben (68), agreed that Nomeisie is a difficult monkey. “This monkey is often threatening me! I can’t go to my shack in the backyard peacefully. Nomeisie always gives me a fierce look. I can’t even go to the toilet,” she said.

Sipho said Nomeisie eats meat, fruit and vegetables. “In 2011, a group of monkeys were eating beside the road near my house. Nomeisie was among them. She was being carried by her mother. A speeding car knocked Nomeise’s mother, killing her instantly. Nomeise fell down from her mother’s arm and broke her leg. I went to the scene, picked up Nomeisie, put a bandage on her broken leg and nursed her back to health. Apart from her dislike for members of the female species, Nomeisie’s other vice is stealing eggs in the township.

NMB residents speak about Workers’ Day PE Express Indaba’s NCEBA DLADLA wanted to know what Workers’ Day meant to Nelson Mandela Bay residents and discovered it means a lot to some, while to others – especially the unemployed – it’s a reminder of the struggle for better life. * To car guard Mthetheleli Jama (30) of Western Road in Central it means: “It is very important to have a job. Keep it!” * “To me, this is the day for the workers to rest because they work hard. This day, they can take their children to recreational facilities like parks or even plant trees because we need them,” said Simon Manonyane (37) of Western Road in Central. * Vusumzi Kwatsha (46) of Motherwell first became confused and asked, “What about it again?” Then he said that to him this is the day for the workers to remember their rights. * Transnet employee Phaphama Nambona (51) of Motherwell said this is the day for all the workers of South Africa to meet as workers and take stock of where they are coming from. “No matter what happens, we must not forget where we come from as we go into the future,” he said. * New Brighton musician and member of Blaze Jazz Band Bongani Tulwana (35) said, “As artists we expect unions to give us some work on this very important day. Workers Day should give local musicians an opportunity to entertain workers as they are enjoying their free time at home.” * “This is the day for the workers to enjoy their rights. The bus strike that we’re experiencing right now, is an offshoot of things to consider in the labour market. To me, the strikes that we see are as a result of workplace problems that are still inherent in the country today,” said Abantu Neosoul (27), a musician from Motherwell: * Self-employed Nomahlubi Mlandu (35) of New Brighton said, “This is the day for me to do business. I’m hoping because workers are at home at least I’ll be able to sell today.” * “People are unemployed. We’ve got children that are sitting doing nothing at home. I am old, yet I spend the whole day here hop-

ing someone will buy. People don’t buy, they don’t have money. Workers’ Day means nothing to me,” said gogo Nozimasile Mbatyana (64) a hawker at Njoli Square, KwaZakhele. * To Continental Tyres employee Nomat-

Why do we celebrate Workers’ Day? Today, May 1, South Africans are enjoying a public holiday in celebration of Workers’ Day, but many don’t know why or when the day originated. May Day was born from the industrial struggle for an eight-hour work day. Men, women and children were forced to work long hours in miserable conditions just to eke out a living. These conditions gave rise to demands for limitations on the working day. In the United States, where May Day was born, Philadelphia carpenters campaigned for a ten-hour day in 1791. By the 1830s, this had become a general demand. In 1835, workers in Philadelphia organised a general strike, led by Irish coal heavers. From 1830 to 1860, the average work day had dropped from 12 hours to 11 hours. Already in this period, the demand for an eight-hour day was being raised. Business and the state reacted to the rapidly growing

militant movement by increasing support of the police and the militia. Local business in Chicago purchased a $2 000 machine gun for the Illinois National Guard to use against strikers. On 3 May 1886 police fired into a crowd of striking workers, killing four and wounding many. A few years later, in 1872, a hundred thousand workers in New York City struck and won the eight-hour day, mostly for building trade workers. On 1 May 1890, May Day demonstrations took place in the United States and most countries in Europe. Although it was supposed to be a once-off demonstration on 1 May, the day quickly became an annual event. May Day has been celebrated unofficially in South Africa since the 1980s. However, 1 May became an officially recognised public holiday only after the democratic elections of 1994. - Source: www.sahistory.org.za

Moroka Swallows flew with the wind against Maritzburg United NCEBA DLADLA MOROKA Swallows beat Maritzburg United 1-0 in their Absa Premiership match played at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium last Friday. The match was the last of the four the KZN outfit Maritzburg United opted to play in Nelson Mandela Bay – a good gesture towards the Eastern Cape Province which does not have a Premier Soccer League team. It was a goal from striker Katlego Mashego on the stroke of half-time (45 minutes) that won the game for the Dube Birds (Swallows) who had a good number of fans to cheer them on. The win pushed Swallows to 10th position on the log with 35 points - equalling their opponents who are at 35 points but ninth on the log owing to a better goal difference. Both teams have three matches to go. In the second half, United played a better game. They started an attack with their back

four, with Michael Norton, Delron Buckly and Dillon Sheppard surging forward in search of an equaliser, but it was not to be. Numerous attempts at goal by Sheppard, Cuthbert Malajila and Norton either missed or were beautifully saved by the alert Swallows goal-minder Greg Etafia. David Mathebula was brought in for Lerato Shabangu in the 68th minute and his nifty passes and good crosses could have given Swallows their second goal but thanks to Ernst Middendorp’s rear-guard action, score remained unchanged. * United Chairman Farook Kadodia said last week Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium was a world class venue that has provided his players and coach with a relaxed atmosphere. He also commended Eastern Cape fans for their support. Kadodia said they would still consider bringing some of their home matches to Mandela Bay if it was still without a PSL team next season.

whether many boxers would have matching opponents in terms of weight. “We’ll surely have many bouts because of the number of clubs to be represented. At this stage I cannot, however, say how many. That will depend,” said Blou, a former professional boxer from Thubalethu Boxing Club - the club that was later named after the late former SA Junior Lightweight Champion Mpisekhaya “Phantom Killer” Mbaduli. The club produced great professional fighters during Mbaduli’s management era such as the current Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality Ward 50 Councillor Zolani Ncwadi from KwaLanga. Under Blou, the club has most recently produced Eastern Cape champions like Nkosikhona Mlungwana and the current Miniflyweight prospect Bulelani Jacobs.
