PSL giants play in PE on Friday NCEBA DLADLA
A
N elite football match is on the cards for Eastern Cape soccer loving fans as the Premier Soccer League (PSL) outfit Maritzburg United will be playing their next Absa Premier league fixture at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Friday. The kick off for this game against Swallows is at 8pm. Fresh from their match against Supersport United at Lucas Moripe Stadium last night, the Team of Choice, as Maritzburg United is known, will be hoping to finish off their “home game” at Nelson Mandela Bay with aplomb. At the time of going to press yesterday afternoon, United were lying sixth on the PSL log with 34 points from 25 games while their opponents, who are fresh from a 3-1 drubbing by Kaizer Chiefs at Dobsonville at the weekend were 10th on the log with 32 points from 26 outings. Izinyoni (Swallows) under the wounded coach Zeca Marques will be expected to come to the clash with their guns blazing as they can sense slipping out of the Top 8 position. The likes of Siyabonga Nomvethe, Katlego Mashego and Bennett Chenene will be hoping to add their tally on the score-sheet come Friday night. Maritzburg United have not disappointed in their previous games here and club chairman Farook Kadodia believes his players

(like Cuthbert Malajila, Michael Norton and Delron Buckley) will be playing for maximum points and nothing less. “These are exciting times with the PSL season coming to a close. Every team is pushing hard for the Top 8 position and so our boys will be doing their best to ensure victory against Swallows,” said Kadodia. Kadodia said Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium is a world class venue that has provided his players and coach Ernst Middendorp with a relaxed atmosphere. “And the fans too have been supportive,” said Kadodia, adding that he was hoping Eastern Cape fans would still come in their numbers to support United. . Future fixtures for Maritzburg United are Platinum Stars away on 1 May, Ajax Cape Town at Harry Gwala Stadium (home) on 11 May and Orlando Pirates away on 18 May.
Kwanobuhle upandcoming hiphop artist Siviwe Sinqe, a.k.a. Mic Pro, will be among the performers at the Music is Life MiniFestival at Willow Dam, Uitenhage on Saturday, April 27 April. Two of the singles from his upcoming debut album I am Mic Pro PE are due to be released at the end of July. Read more about Mic Pro on page 16. PHOTO:SUPPLIED

Man arrested with R12 000 worth of stolen goods NCEBA DLADLA UITENHAGE members of the South African Police Service (SAPS) arrested a 26-year old man for possession of stolen goods last Thursday. This was after a business burglary was reported to have happened at Caledon Street, Uitenhage in the early hours of Tuesday morning last week. “Police received a tip-off from members of
the community at about 7.45 am and they followed it up,” said police spokesperson Warrant Officer Gerda Swart, adding that the suspect was arrested at his home in Market Street, and more than R12 000 worth of goods confiscated. “The management of the Uitenhage SAPS acknowledge those men and women in blue who work so hard and give an extra effort to fight crime,” said W/O Swart. The man was expected to appear in court soon, according to the police spokesperson.

Thousands of firearms destroyed MEMBERS of the South African Police Service (SAPS) in the Eastern Cape continued in their efforts to create a safer and secure environment by destroying 3 898 illegal firearms in Port Elizabeth last Saturday. At least 1 898 of those firearms which were handguns, were surrendered in terms of the Firearms Control Act (Act 60 of 2000), according to provincial police spokesperson Col. Sibongile Soci. The other 2 000 firearms, which were believed to have been used in criminal activities, were forfeited to the state. Soci said by the destruction of the illegal firearms, the SAPS aims to promote a culture of responsible firearm ownership and is committed to the eradication of illegal firearms which wreak havoc when used in armed robberies and other violent crimes. “By destroying the firearms, we are making certain that these dangerous weapons will never find their way into the hands of the criminals and be used in the commission of crime,” said Soci. The SAPS in the province has managed to destroy 48 000 illegal firearms in its efforts to reduce firearm related violence in the country since 2004. – NCEBA DLADLA
No amnesty yet for outstanding traffic fines NCEBA DLADLA MOTORISTS will not yet receive amnesty for outstanding traffic fines. This was said by municipal spokesperson Kupido Baron on Friday following the reports in the local newspaper that the planned
amnesty for traffic fines would start on Monday. The metropolitan municipality, according to Baron, must still receive the money owed by fined traffic-law offenders because there were a few considerations still to be made. “The planned amnesty period for the traffic fines is still in its infancy stage and will not
start on Monday,” said Baron in a media statement. The statement was issued to correct the misconception the Friday last week report could have created among the members of the community. Even though the matter was discussed at the Safety and Security Standing Committee
on Thursday, Baron said, the plan must still be approved by the Mayoral Committee and/ or Council for a resolution to map the way forward. “Residents are therefore informed that they remain responsible for the full outstanding amount of fines and warrants of arrest,” said Baron.

Metro Police back on track HELGA VAN STAADEN THE long-planned metro police force which has been put on hold for three years, is back on track. This issue was discussed at the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro’s Safety and Security committee meeting last Thursday. The municipality wants to start a recruitment process in May and appoint a metro police chief in July. Shane Brown, acting executive director of Safety and Security, said this time they want a clear communication plan so that everyone knows how the processes are running. Gustav Rautenbach, DA councillor, said his party supported the metro police in full, but clarity should be given on whether the Minister of Police still planned to integrate the metro police with the police. “This would mean that we would be losing manpower and money. Another aspect is the Hawks’ investigation into alleged corruption at the traffic department. We should also prevent another fiasco with the appointment of the metro police chief,” said Rautenbach. Some of the weaknesses identified in the report that was submitted to the committee meeting that could possibly interfere with the metro police, include poor staff, limited qualified staff, poor work ethic and poor performance and staff shortages. What is in the municipality’s favour is that some staff have already been trained for the metro police, and the municipality’s existing infrastructure such as vehicles and weapons.

Youth given tools to stop water leaks THE Nelson Mandela Bay (NMB) Municipality handed over plumbing tools to 83 young people to assist the municipality in stopping water leaks across the City. The 83 youths are part of a programme driven by the municipality’s Extended Public Works Programme (EPWP) office. This progamme was designed to give skills for self- sustainability, create jobs for young people and help the municipality to curb the challenge of water leaks. The young people, who hail from all the areas of the Nelson Mandela Bay, have undergone plumbing training through the municipality’s Water Services Subdirectorate, private plumbing companies and East Cape Training Centre. Nelson Mandela Bay formed an agreement with the private plumbing companies who won contracts with the municipality to absorb the youth, train them and use them within the water leaks project. At the completion of the training late last year, they were handed certificates that qualified them as plumbers. Cur-
rently they are still working for different companies that are doing work for the municipality. They will use the tools to work with at the companies to which they have been seconded. On completion of their contracts with the companies, if they are not absorbed, they will use the tools to sustain themselves by creating their own plumbing cooperatives and businesses. An excited beneficiary, Thanduxolo Vuyi from Joe Slovo West, said he was at a loss for words on how grateful he was about the change the municipality has brought in his life. “To me it was never about money when I joined the project. I wanted skills that I can use to sustain myself and my family. Now I do not only have skills, I have also been given tools that I can use,” said Vuyi. Vuyi said he hoped the project could grow bigger and cover other skills that were required by industry, where other young people could benefit. “We need more of these programmes. Young people
want to work and even create jobs for others. What they need is support,” he added. Another beneficiary, Anela Mbanga from Despatch said he would “never suffer again” with the skills he had acquired. “It is up to me to make something of myself. The foundation has been laid, I have not been given a fish, I have been taught how to fish and furthermore given a fishing rod,” said Mbanga. Nelson Mandela Bay Infrastructure and Engineering Portfolio Chairman Andile Mfunda, who leads the programme, was equally excited about the tools handover. “We are not only giving tools to people, we have trained them to be able to use them in assisting the municipality to save water,” said Councillor Mfunda. He said, “The challenge we have of water being wasted through water leaks will soon be a thing of the past. This is a mutually beneficial partnership between the municipality, private sector and our communities,” he added.

Bay residents support Kings rugby but also want PSL team PE Express Indaba asked Nelson Mandela Bay residents whether the presence of a Super 15 rugby team, the Southern Kings, was enough to quench the thirst of sports loving peo ple for elite games or whether they would still like to have a Premier Soccer League outfit too. NCEBA DLADLA spoke to a few people and took the photos.
Families
. Xolani Dindala (34) of Motherwell said: “I am satisfied with the Southern Kings’ performance at the moment but still think that we need a Professional Soccer League (PSL) team in the Eastern Cape.” . “I played both rugby and soccer when I grew up. I love and support the Southern Kings, but I’d love to see more black players coming through their ranks,” said Phindile Simakuhle (45) of KwaDwesi Extension. Phindile mentioned some of the Kings’ matches to prove he’s a real follower. He also hoped big business would come together “to get us a professional soccer team.” . “I can’t say anything for I am neither a follower of soccer nor rugby,” said Noxolo Danster (29) a Zwide-based VW SA employee who played netball and was involved in athletics during her school days at Nombulelo High in Grahamstown. . “I love sport a lot. I grew up playing rugby,” said Sam Gana (64) of KwaNobuhle in Uitenhage, adding that he loved and supported the Southern Kings. . Xolile Nqatha (43) of KwaZakhele said, “As a Port Elizabeth resident I believe we deserve
a professional soccer team to keep us entertained with elite football matches in the same way that we have a a team in Super rugby. I support the Southern Kings.” . It is good for the Southern Kings to play in the elite rugby league, according to Bongani Senti (24). However, he said, “I am concerned about the issue of many foreign players in the team. I think we need talent scouts to identify and harness local talent especially in our townships and schools.” . Bulelani Nomvalo (32) of KwaZakhele loves his soccer. “I am a soccer lover who believes watching rugby is just a waste of time,” he said. . “I love the Southern Kings but still think that we need a PSL team as well. Rugby for me is still regarded as the sport of the select few whereas football is the sport of the masses especially from the townships,” said Siyabulela Matwa (28) from Motherwell. . Siyabulela Nombula (23) of Motherwell said, “I am happy with the Southern Kings’ progress so far and think that this is a worldclass team that is fairly racially representative as well.”

Why immunisation is essential for the health of your child IT’s impossible to fight an enemy you don’t know, can’t see and wouldn’t be able to recognise. Any soldier will tell you that before going into battle they gather intelligence through reconnaissance missions, which is used to ensure the squad is better prepared for battle. This is exactly how immunisations work. The immunisation is the reconnaissance mission that helps protect your body if it is ever faced with the enemy: childhood illnesses such as tuberculosis, meningitis or hepatitis B to name a few. Immunising your child ensures the immune system is strong enough to cope when faced with childhood diseases. “The vaccine is in fact a tiny sample of the germs or bacteria that cause these infections, but it is so small that it in fact helps develop immunity,” explains Peter Jordan, Principal Officer of Fedhealth, one of SA’s largest remaining independent medical schemes. Essentially, it helps the body become a better soldier, which is why keeping up to date with your child’s immunisations is not only one of the best things you can do for your child, but it’s also essential to the health of your community. It takes only one soldier to weaken a squad. “If a member of the community develops one of these infections, the rest of the community is at risk too,” says Jordan. “In addition to helping your child avoid high risk diseases, immunisation also prevents an outbreak of those diseases.” While having your child vaccinated is not law, many schools request that your child’s vaccine schedule and immunisation records are up to date before admitting your child. “The vaccine schedule ensures your child is immunised as soon as the child’s body is able to develop the expected resistance to the illness,” he says. “If vaccines are missed or late, some can be caught up within the recommended time intervals while others can’t because the child is no longer at risk or the vaccine is not safe for older children.” The immunisation schedule spans 12 years, and Jordan says that with up to 15 immunisations due in the first year of life, it’s easy for busy parents to lose track. “We have a solution that will help parents stay on top
of the schedule: The Tum2Mom Immunisation Email Reminder Service (IERS). The website www.tum2mom.co.za is an informative and entertaining website for new parents, and Fedhealth members receive a voucher code allowing free access to the IERS as part of the Fedhealth Baby welcome pack. Members use the code when registering for the IERS service on the Tum2Mom site.” Here is a schedule of immunisations as per the Expanded Programme on Immunisation in South Africa (EPI-SA): . Birth: OPV 0 (Oral Polio Vaccine) and BCG (tuberculosis vaccine) . 6 weeks: OPV 1 (Oral Polio Vaccine) and DTP 1 (vaccine against diptheria, whooping cough and tetanus) and HepB 1 (hepatitis vaccine) and Hib 1 (diphtheria and tetanus vaccine) . 10 weeks: OPV 2 (Oral Polio Vaccine) and DPT 2 (vaccine against diptheria, whooping cough and tetanus) and HepB 2 (hepatitis vaccine) and Hib 2 (diphtheria and tetanus vaccine) . 14 weeks: OPV 3 (Oral Polio Vaccine) and DPT 3 (vaccine against diptheria, whooping cough and tetanus) and HepB 3 (hepatitis vaccine) and Hib 3 (diphtheria and tetanus vaccine) . 9 months: Measles 1 . 18 months: OPV 4 (Oral Polio Vaccine) and DPT 4 (vaccine against diptheria, whooping cough and tetanus) and Measles 2 . 6 years: OPV 5 (Oral Polio Vaccine) and DPT 5 (vaccine against diptheria, whooping cough and tetanus) . 12 years: OPV 5 (Oral Polio Vaccine) and DPT 5 (vaccine against diptheria, whooping cough and tetanus) The vaccines are provided free of charge at public clinics. Private clinics generally charge a consultation fee. With each immunisation, your healthcare profession will discuss the side effects. However slight fevers, drowsiness and pain at the site of the injection are common. “Immunisation is an important part of disease prevention and it’s a powerful way to protect your child’s health,” says Jordan. “It empowers parents to protect their children from an enemy they can’t see.”

Research done for the development indicated a catchment area of some 340 000 customers and an estimated retail potential of R1.22 billion at the time it was done. There’s no doubt that it really is time for iBayi to have a mall of its own. Kenako Mall is situated at the intersection of the R75 at Uitenhage Road and Spondo Rd in iBayi and with its excellent visibility, it will be easily accessible for residents as well as providing a convenient stopping off point for anyone passing through. It will serve the surrounding areas of Bethelsdorp, Algoa Park, KwaZakhele, Soweto-on-Sea, Zwide, Kwadwesi, Kwamagxaki,
Masibulele, New Brighton, Kwaford and Struandale. It is also close to major facilities including the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University Missionvale Campus, the Eastern Cape Training Centre and the Dora Nginza Hospital. Owned by the Shoprite Group and Prima Retail Properties the 20 000 square metre shopping centre is anchored by a 4 000 square metre Shoprite, which will trade from 8am until 7pm daily. The trading hours for the mall itself are expected to be from 9am to 6pm from Mondays to Fridays; 9am to 5pm on Saturdays and 9am to 3pm on Sundays. Kenako Mall includes fashion retailers such as Truworths, Ackermans, Edgars Active, FashionIQ, Identity, Jet, Legit, Mr Price, Pep, Rage, Shoe Styles and Tekkie Town, among others. Health and beauty stores include Clicks, Torga

Optical and Global Hair & Cosmetics; whilst the household, furniture and DIY store offerings include the likes of Ellerines, Home Express, OK Furniture, Morkels, Bears and Cashbuild. The parking area has 995 parking bays and a dedicated taxi area will be able to accommodate up to 37 taxis. With its already large customer catchment area and additional through-traffic of some 27 000 vehicles passing the site daily, Kenako Mall is sure to be popular right from its opening day. Anticipating this, the developers have made provision for the fact that the mall could be expanded up to 30 000 square metres in future. In the meantime, it’s “all systems go” to prepare for the official opening on 25 April, when it really will be time for shoppers in this previously underserviced suburb to have a shopping centre close to where they live and work.

Top brands in footwear at Tekkie Town Tekkie Town will also be opening a branch in the new Kenako Mall. They promise to surprise shoppers with their range of leisure, fashion and sport footwear in fabulous brands like Puma, Nike, Adidas, Reebok, Cat, Havaianas and much more. There is also an extensive range of different coloured shoes in all the top brands at fantastic prices. One of the most important things when buying footwear is that they fit correctly. Tekkie Town has the following advice on how to choose a well-fitted shoe which will feel comfortable and will be well balanced from toe to heel. . From shoe tip to the longest toe allow an average of 9mm open space; . For the width the shoe should fit comfortably without stretching the upper middle of the shoe; . For the heel area, the foot should not slip, but allow for movement.
The ideal walking shoe Walking shoes should have a flexible sole and you should be able to bend and twist your toe area. Choose light weight, breathable shoes.
The ideal toning shoe Look out for specially curved designed soles, which create a rocking motion from heel to toe - and assist in toning and trimming your calves, thighs, glutes and abs while you go about your everyday activity.
The ideal running shoe . Normal arch: Cushioned or stability running shoes with moderate control features. . Low arch: Mild overpronators: Look for stability running shoes. Severe overpronators: Look for motion control running shoes. . High arch: Cushioned running shoes will provide the most cushioning for absorbing shock and have enough flexibility to enhance foot motion.
The ideal training shoe Training shoes can be used for a wide variety of sport activities. These shoes can’t be used for continuous running, owing to the fact that they are heavier and do not offer the cushioning and flexibility of an ideal running shoe.
AT YOUR SERVICE. Seen here are some of the permanent staff and casual workers of Tekkie Town that will open on April 25 in the new Kenako Mall. They are Janine Jacobs, Zubair Philander, Sesethu Sikhotshi, Nathi Maliwa, Denodine Jacobs, Raquel Seharneck and Tachia Spogter. At the back are Siyabonga Matroos (manager) and Abigail Smith. Former beauty queen turns Sangoma THAMSANQA MBOVANE NOMAKHAYA Zozi-Ndabambi is one of the 1990s’ most talked-about beauty queens. But recently, a far different crown was bestowed on her head, and that is, for being a sangoma! Nomakhaya (39), of KwaNobuhle township in Uitenhage, was recently crowned in front of many sangomas who came from all over the Eastern Cape to her Soga Street home to witness this special “ukuvuma intwaso” ceremony. She is a former Miss Uitenhage, Miss KwaNobuhle, Miss High Schools, Miss Ellerines, to mention just a few. She said: “Gone is the life of make-up and high heels and beauty contests. Today, people should proudly call me a sangoma! In the past I used to titivate myself with make-up and showed off my fancy shoes. However, today I’m busy dealing with herbs and bones strictly, as well as taking care of my two giant tortoises!” Nomakhaya believes things would go wrong if she did not accept the calling to become a sangoma. “If I didn’t heed my ancestors’ call, my life would then be full of troubles,” she said.

No optometrist certificates allowed before initial eye test at driving licence centres MOTORISTS applying for a learner’s or driver’s licence are legally obliged to have their eyes tested at the municipal Driving Licence Testing Centre. No optometrist certificates will be allowed if an initial eye test has not been done by the centre. According to the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality this is in accordance with an obligation in terms of Regulation 108 (1)(c)(iv) of the National Road Traffic Act, No. 93 of 1996, which stipulates that “the examiner shall ensure that the applicant’s vision complies with the requirements referred to in Regulation 102 by using the image capturing system”. This system not only captures information regarding the eye test but also has a function that allows for the printing of a report that will ensure greater credibility. This is immediately effective. Only in the event where the applicant is disqualified by the Driving Licence Testing Centre when first tested and referred to an optometrist, will an optometrist certificate be allowed.

Parental involvement in education addressed NCEBA DLADLA THE Education Department in the Port Elizabeth district is enabling parents to help improve the state of education. According to the PE District School Governing Bodies (SGBs) Coordinator Nontombi Nama, their attempts to improve the pass rate is not solely focussed on matriculants, but on every stakeholder that plays a pivotal role in the education process. Among these are parents who are important role-players in assisting learners to achieve greatness in education from the intermediate phase. According to Nama the department will be working with the Jameel Poverty Action Lab, an America-based non-governmental organisation (NGO) otherwise known as the J-PAL, to train parents on how to best assist children with their school work. “We are giving parents the right tools to be able to assist their children to improve in education,” said Nama. Yesterday a worskshop was held with school principals, SGB Chairpersons and one teacher per school in the Intermediate Phase (Grades 4-6) at the District offices in Ethel Valentine Hall. “The workshops will be on-going, so we urge parents to please avail themselves when the next meeting is called,” said Nama. Nama thanked the clergy belonging to the Inter-denominational African Ministers Association of Southern Africa (IDAMASA) for supporting their initiatives and the General Motors (GM) Foundation for attracting JPAL to come to Port Elizabeth and work with them.

PwC helps improve education at Motherwell high school IN an ongoing effort to address and improve the quality and standard of education in South Africa, Professional Services Firm PwC has committed to spending R100 000 towards the upliftment of the grade 12 learners who are studying Maths, Accounting and Physical Sciences at Mfesane Secondary School, in Motherwell. The project is part of PwC’s overall corporate social responsibility strategy that focuses on education, the development of business skills, the
creation of employment and to encourage economic contribution to communities that were previously disadvantaged. The grade 12 Mathematics and Physical Science results have been below 50% during the past three years as a result of the lack of resources. “We hope to make a positive contribution to the learners’ lives as they strive to achieve a matric qualification,” said Partner in Charge of the Port Elizabeth office, Andrea Puggia.
In partnership with The Initiative, a local NGO, who provides a support structure for the youth in poor areas, this handover took place earlier in April at Mfesane Secondary School in Motherwell. The Initiative will also be responsible for the periodic monitoring of the results during the course of the school year and assist the top achievers in accessing tertiary institution. The Initiative deals directly with some of
the social challenges that the country faces, such as poverty and unemployment. Other corporate responsibility initiatives that PwC has been involved in include supporting the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants’ Thuthuka bursary fund and providing a number of bursary schemes to previously disadvantaged students. Recently, the firm launched an electronic laboratory at the Teacher Training Development Centre in Soweto.

Hip Hop artist Sinqe, who prefers to be called Mic Pro in music circles, has two singles out from his upcoming debut album “I am Mic Pro PE” which is due to be released end of July. The music is recorded at Hidden Prospects Entertainment Studios in Uitenhage. According to Sinqe the singles, “Ride with me” and “Fast Lane” are enjoying a lot of airplay on local radio stations and those who are able to do digital downloads are responding positively to the music. features in the party song “Ride with me”. “It was in 2009 when I met Catalyst, one of Uitenhage’s biggest Hip Hop artists and producers, that I was finally able to record my own material which I began to perform around Nelson Mandela Bay,” said Sinqe. He has performed with the best including Gauteng’s Hip Hop star Siyabonga “Slikour” Metana during the 2010 New Year’s Eve Music Bash at St. George’s Beach and with 2012 Idol’s Winner Khaya Mthethwa at the Uitenhage Street Carnival in 2012. Sinqe is inspired by US Hip Hop artists who played a major role in his choice of music to follow and partake in, but it is in working with local Hip Hop artists that he finds fulfilment and purpose. Alex stages Broadway musical ‘Hairspray’ ALEXANDER Road High School is staging its production of the Broadway musical hit show, “Hairspray”, under the direction of Greg Everard at the Savoy theatre from this week until Saturday, May 4. Everard is well-known in Port Elizabeth drama circles, both for his performances and also for his direction of hit shows such as “Beauty and the Beast” and “Cinderella”, to name but a few. Assisting him are Nici Coleman as musical director, Chereen Ferreira taking charge of choreography, Wendy Doubell as vocal coach and Debbie Everard as rehearsal pianist. The cast, which has been rehearsing since January, includes 60 learners and three staff members, taking the roles of Edna and Wilbur Turnblad, as well as Velma von Tussel.
Set in Baltimore, Maryland in 1962, this foot-stomping musical manages to deal with many issues while at the same time being a whole lot of fun. The problems encountered are those of weight and race - and whether only black kids can dance – together with the age-old concerns of good and evil. Set against this background, there is a lot of dancing to some really catchy tunes and some amazing dance steps performed by the cast. The show started last night at the Savoy Theatre and runs to 4 May. Tickets are available from Computicket, but discount vouchers are on sale from the school bursar. The show on April 30 is a family show with tickets at reduced rates. Any enquiries may be directed to info@arhs.co.za or to the school at 0 041 365 1270.

Musa Nkosi sings gospel music at one of the many shopping centres where he has performed in and around Port Elizabeth. PHOTO:NCEBA DLADLA
Gauteng gospel singer Musa Nkosi brings his music to the Bay NCEBA DLADLA NELSON Mandela Bay artists must learn something from Musa Nkosi. This Johannesburg-based musician is here in the Eastern Cape to promote his music, a 10-track gospel album entitled E’s bhedlela. Nkosi is based in KwaZakhele township, Port Elizabeth until June. He visits every terminus and big shopping centre in PE, from Korsten, Daku, Njoli and Motherwell to KwaNobuhle in Uitenhage to sing with backtracks and sell his CDs and DVDs for R40 and R50 respectively every Friday to Sunday and long weekends. There is nothing amazing about this CD
said to be recorded at PEM studios in Gauteng. The sleeve is just ordinary with nothing written on the actual CD. Only the music is moving with lyrics about everyday struggles of poverty, sickness and “almost death” from which he was saved - “thanks to the Saving Grace of our Lord Jesus Christ”, he said. “He wears worn-out clothes which depicts the poverty from which he comes,” said his PE friend and partner Thobela Mdezuka, a DJ from KwaZakhele. “We have also been to Grahamstown and to the outskirts of Port Elizabeth where Musa attracted many people who came to listen and eventually buy the music,” said Andile Nonkewuse, who called himself the transporter, as they are using his vehicle to get to the venues.

Karate couple teach kids discipline through sport NCEBA DLADLA MEMBERS of the Cuba family in KwaNobuhle, Uitenhage talk about discipline, love and respect every day in their conversations. And, they mean it as sports people, because when they fight, they fight, all of them! Father, Madoda Cuba is the founder of Shukokai Karate Club which has five branches of which the one in Tize Street, KwaNobuhle is the
main branch. The others are in Mendi Street, 6th Avenue (also in KwaNobuhle) and one each in Despatch and Addo. Madoda, the chief instructor of the clubs, also known as Sensei Mntwana has a 5th Dan Black Belt. The mother, Nomfundo Cuba, aka as Sensei Noxolo, is also an instructor with 4th Dan Black Belt while their children Bongani (20) and Bonginkosi (17) both have Black Belts in their divisions.

Sensei Noxolo Cuba with members of Shukokai Karate Club in Tize Street, KwaNobuhle. Madoda started in this sport in the early 1970s and inspired his wife Nomfundo to follow in his footsteps in 1984 when he started to train people in Marymount which is known as eRoma. Growing up without a father figure and only a brother at home during the turbulent 1980s it was an easy decision for Nomfundo to join the sport that provides self-defence. The couple opened their doors for the young and old to join. In KwaNobuhle alone there are 65 juniors and about 40 seniors training in karate and a further 42 people do Taebo (the sport the couple introduced to the area in recent years). The rest do body-building and weightlifting. PE Express Indaba found Junior Black Belt holder and instructor Yolanda Vena (16) taking the youths through their paces.

“We are practising techniques as we’re preparing for mini-demonstrations at the club this Saturday,” said Yolanda who started training in the sport in 2005 when she was only 8 years old. Some of the members, who range in age from 4 - 88 years, do not pay their R25 joining fee and R20 monthly fees regularly. This makes things difficult for the couple. “Unemployment is the main problem, Some of these children come from very poor backgrounds and they don’t have money. We welcome them, because they love the sport. It keeps them out of crime and drugs,” said Noxolo. The club also struggles during competitions and demonstrations as some of the participants do not have karate suits. “We also need a canvass and hope that a good Samaritan can come to our rescue,” said Sensei Noxolo.
