Grave concern over ‘cross’ criminals THAMSANQA MBOVANE
T
he KwaNobuhle Cemetery in Bucwa Street is known as the place where 28 victims of the 1985 Langa Massacre are resting in peace.
However, today people who take short cuts through the graveyard, to and from their homes, are being attacked by thugs kneeling down, pretending to be a “cross.” Nontando Yantolo (65), a victim of the “cross” in this graveyard, said the incident happened while she was walking through the graveyard to her house in Duduza last Month. “It was getting dark outside. The thug
was kneeling down in the graveyard. His elbows were sticking out side by side and he posed like a cross.” “The culprit rose and threw himself on me. He robbed me of my R100 note. I didn’t even scream because no one would hear me in the graveyard. I didn’t want to open a case with the police, as I was scared they would just ask me why I was taking a short cut through the graveyard.” Mthubanzi Mniki, Nelson Mandela Bay spokesman, said, “We would like to advise people not to take short cuts, but use the tarred roads instead. The cemetery is fenced, but people keep on making gaps, in order to cross through the graveyard to their homes. By doing so, they become victims of the alleged ‘crosses’..”

SOCIAL Development and Special Programmes MEC, Pemmy Majodina and Nelson Mandela Bay Executive Mayor Benson Fihla, have pledged to support the family of Siphosethu Mali, the 17 year-old boy who died under mysterious circumstances at the Enkuselweni Youth Care Centre in Kwazakhele on Friday, October 11. According to the police report, the boy – from Tabata Street in New Brighton – who was in custody in this juvenile institution, was
pital. He was later transferred to the Livingstone hospital, where he passed away in the Intensive Care Unit on Friday. MEC Majodina and Nelson Mandela Bay Executive Mayor Benson Fihla sent their deepest condolences to the family of the deceased. MEC Majodina and the mayor visited and apologised to the Mali family for this unfortunate incident. They pledged to support the family with funeral arrangements this Saturday. “The MEC is saddened and distraught by the loss of life. She had, however, called for calm among members of staff at the centre
and for members of the Mali family also to remain calm,” said Maswana, adding that the MEC believes justice would take its course and hopefully prevent an incident like this ever to ha-ppen again. Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Thembi Gwe confirmed the incident and added that the 52 year-old suspect, Mpumelelo Ndatana, handed himself over to Kwazakhele SAPS following the death of a 17 year-old boy in hospital. Ndatana and the four other care workers appeared in court on Monday facing a charge of murder.
PE Doctors give sight to the blind through free medical procedures NCEBA DLADLA TEN Nelson Mandela Bay residents – some of whom are partially and others completely blind – received life-changing eye surgery at the Life Mercantile Hospital in Port Elizabeth at the weekend. This formed part of last week’s Celebration of World Sight Day, according to Life

Special ophthalmologists in the Port Elizabeth region, Ncanywa said, restored sight to at least 12 patients at Life Mercantile, Life St George’s (Both in PE) and Humansdorp’s Life Isivivana Private hospitals. Doctor Pilile Ngxukumeshe of Life Mercantile operated on 10 patients on Saturday
while doctors Grobler and Wouter Smith removed cataracts from one patient each, at the St George’s and Isivivane hospitals respectively. Doctors and nurses offered their time for free and the hospitals waived theatre and other costs. “In addition, Alcon and Allergan sponsored the surgical packs and lenses for the procedures,” said Ncanywa.

Sports minister Mbalula visits metro NCEBA DLADLA “NELSON Mandela Bay is a sporting city.” This is according to minister of sport, Fikile Mbalula, who paid a visit to the metro last week. The minister was on a day-long visit to the Nelson Mandela Bay municipality to talk about sports development to the political leadership, the sports council, sporting federations, clubs, sports-loving people and residents. Nelson Mandela Bay chief whip, Councillor Joy Seale, sport and recreation portfolio Cllr Nomamerika Magopeni, Eastern Cape Sports Council president, Khusta Magada and sporting legends like former IBF World Miniflyweight titlist, Zolani “The Tiger” Petelo and boxer Graham Gola, Makhaya Jack (rugby player) and Xhanti Lamani (rugby administrator) and Lindisipho Tyatya (Judo) were present at the Lillian Ngoyi Sports Centre in Kwazakhele on Thursday. “We have come to talk about sports development, and this includes the provision and the upgrading of sports facilities,” said Mbalula,
whose visit was part of president Jacob Zuma’s Imbizo Week Engagements. The visit was aimed at urging members of the community and sports fanatics to revive local sports clubs and to actively take sports back to schools. South Africa, according to Mbalula, cannot afford to see its youth finding entertainment only through street bashes. “I want to come back here and witness a huge sporting tournament during the school holidays. There is money available for this to happen. But, it must be done under the auspices of the Sports Council,” Mbalula pointed out. Mbalula said his ministry was also concentrating on the training and development of coaches of different sporting codes. “Together we must deliver on the promise of sport and sports development.” The minister highlighted the need for sports enthusiasts and federations to apply for funding from the Lotto to develop community sport and sport facilities. He said it was important that the youth of today know about the local sporting legends, and the country has to honour its legends.
Uitenhage police need assistance to arrest rape and robbery suspect NCEBA DLADLA MISTAKING a private motor-vehicle for a Jikeleza taxi might have led to the alleged sexual attack and robbery of a woman (19) in Amanzi Estate near Uitenhage last week. The Family Violence Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit (FCS) is inves-
tigating a case of rape. “It is alleged that the 19 year-old victim got inside a black VW Jetta in Zwide, thinking that it was a taxi,” said police spokeperson Warrant Officer Gerda Swart. According to Swart, the driver of the vehicle drove the victim to Amanzi Estate, where he forced her out of the vehicle and into the bushes where he raped her. “The suspect robbed the victim of her cellphone, before driving off and leaving her behind in the bushes,” said Swart. According to Swart, the victim was assisted by a passer-by and was transported to the nearest police station, where the matter was reported.“ “A case of rape and robbery was opened for investigation.” She urged anyone with information that might be helpful to the police, pertaining to the vehicle or the identification of the suspect, to contact the police. The suspect is belived to be living in Zwide. People are urged to please contact the investigating officer: People with information must please contact Detective Warrant Officer Aubrey MacDonald at 0 084 580 2788 or SAPS Uitenhage at 0 041 996 3438 or Crime Stop at 0 0860 10 111. Dancing teenage students eradicate poverty THAMSANQA MBOVANE A group of multi-talented teenage students claims it can eradicate poverty through dancing. Since 2005, Ikamva LeAfrika dance group, with members from NU 1, NU 5, NU8, NU 9 and NU11 in Motherwell, has been confidently dancing on stage, both in South Africa and abroad. Among other countries, Ikamva LeAfrika has performed in Switzerland, Tunisia, Sweden and France, over the past eight years. “We don’t only entertain people. When we perform we bring back memories to our beloved audience. “We might be wearing animal-skin or Zulu attire, but what we’re really showing is the Eastern Cape’s diversity in culture. We have Zulus, Sothos and Tswanas living in this province. We are capable of
adopting any cultural style – it’s part of showing that we’re one people,” said chief choreographer Thandile Woji (26). “We continue to attract audiences wherever we go and our message is, ‘we are one nation’,” added fellow choreographer Asanda Ndlebe (27). Woji said one of their members, Xolisa Matrose (29), is a pastor from the reformed church. “We always want to take kids off the streets and prevent them from choosing a life of crime. Children also shouldn’t be hanging out in taverns,” he said. Last year, Asanda signed a contract for a nine-month Tunisian tour as part of a South African dancing cultural group that was contracted to entertain overseas guests. “We market our country thus earning in Dollars, Euros and Yen! When we arrive back home, at least we are able to put something on the table,” he said.
Support for shack fire victims NCEBA DLADLA
RAGING fires, fuelled by
gale-force winds in Nelson Mandela Bay, destroyed numerous shacks on Saturday and left 20 Malabar residents homeless. Nobody was killed in the fires; however, a number of residents had to be treated for minor injuries. Experts are still investigating the cause of the fire. Owing to the metro fire department’s rapid response to the scene, the fire was extinguished quickly and they even managed to save some of the residents’ possessions. But some residents lost everything in the fire and were left with only the clothes on their backs. “Those who were left home-
less after the blaze, were housed in the Malabar Community Centre. Disaster management officials supplied mattresses and blankets to the victims,” said a municipal spokesperson, Kupido Baron. “Our disaster management office has been hands-on in assisting the victims of the fire to find accommodation and food.” said Baron. “Home Affairs started early on Monday to assist residents with applications for birth certificates for children and identity documents that were consumed by the fire.” In a gesture of support, the MEC for Social Development and Special Programmes, Dr Pemmy Majodina, and executive mayor, Benson Fihla, paid a visit to the distraught families.

Walmer’s Grade 7 pupils dress up for success NCEBA DLADLA WALMER Primary School Grade 7 pupils know exactly what they want to do with their lives when they grow up, thanks to their teachers. This was evident during the school’s Career Dress-Up Day last Thursday when pupils came up dressed as doctors, nurses, pilots, fire-fighters, teachers, engineers and electricians. Others, like their teachers, were in academic regalia - all in the name of exploring possible career options, according to Grade 7 teacher Bulelwa Funani. Funani said, “We were showcasing dream careers to inspire our pupils using Life Orientation as the subject. According to Funani, the school was aware of the need for these pupils coming from one of the most impoverished townships in Nelson Mandela Bay to get empowerment through education. “Please don’t become a criminal. Tell yourselves you’re too smart to become a criminal,” urged Deputyprincipal Nomonde Mgoduka. Well-spoken pupils Sisipho Gotyi,
Sibusiso Kelemana, Siyamcela Matyaleni and Banele Kama thanked their teachers for giving them direction. “I’d like to become a lawyer,” said Gotyi. Guest-speaker Mthokozisi Nyoni told the pupils to work hard towards the realisation of their dreams. He used the word “MOVING” to exhort them and quoted a verse from Kwaito star Mandoza’s song, “Uzoyithola kanjani uhlel’ ekoneni?” Meaning, how are you going to get it if you’re seated in the corner (doing nothing). The school’s Head of Department (HOD) Sammy Blaauw asked the pupils to remember to come back to school after 10 years and tell them that they had achieved their goals. “These children should be inspired in life,” said Gwen Fourie, Education Department’s PE District Subject Education Specialist: Life Orientation. Fourie added, “the teachers do their job of teaching while the parents play their part in encouraging and support. The real thing lies squarely on the shoulders of the pupils to realise their dreams.”

Minister promises Young Lads FC support for Brazil trip NCEBA DLADLA MINISTER of Sport Honourable Fikile Mbalula’s visit to Nelson Mandela Bay last week has lifted a heavy load off the shoulders of a Port Elizabeth soccer team. Mbalula who met sports fans, teams and sporting federations at the Lilian Ngoyi Sport Centre in Kwazakhele on Thursday as part of Government’s Imbizo Week to engage stakeholders in the municipalities heard how City Lads FC, the Kia Street Soc-
cer National U-14 Champions were struggling to get passports to Brazil. This is after the New Brighton township club shrugged off all opposition in the competition from local, provincial and national teams all the way to winning the coveted trophy and the trip to represent South Africa in an international championship in Brazil, according to club official Phillip Tsoela. Tsoela who doubles as New Brighton Football Association (NEBFA) Marketing and Communications Manager, said

However, the function was held at SAFA NMB Stadium offices on 7 October 2013. Acting SAFA NMB President Monde Mhletywa lauded the teams which participated in the tournament and he said that the teams showed character on the field of play. SAFA NMB Women’s convener, Beauty Tose, thanked the teams for patiently waiting for kits as the tournament was played in August. though the young boys were excited about the prospects of playing football in a month-long competition in Brazil from May 25 2014, they were, however, struggling to pay R480 each to get a passport as demanded by the Home Affairs Department. The organisers of the competition have promised to pay for airfares, accommodation and meals for the young participants. “Some of these children come from very poor backgrounds and their mostly unemployed parents cannot afford to pay that
kind of money,” pleaded Tsoela. An upbeast Minister Mbalula congratulated the team for their success and promised to assist them with their needs. “We’ll support the team with their needs, without a doubt. It will not be the first time that we (the Department) give people money,” said Mbalula. “We are very happy; even our executive mayor (Oom Ben Fihla) has invited us to his office to get whatever else we need to make this trip a resounding success,” a delighted Tsoela said.

Jacobs becomes new heavyweight champion NCEBA DLADLA UNATHI Jacobs became the new Eastern Cape Heavyweight Champion when he knocked out cold the defending champion Ivan Strydom at the Nangoza Jebe Community Hall in New Brighton on Saturday. Jacobs who weighed-in at 94.4 kg won the fast-paced all-action fury against the taller Strydom (105.10 kg) who could not use his reach advantage to keep his opponent at bay. Big Jacobs’ punches to the head dropped Strydom for referee Lizo Jordaan to give him a mandatory count but it was another onslaught of punches that dropped Strydom flat on his face. The fight was over in 2min 47 seconds of the first round. The win puts Jacobs from Uitenhage who took his record to 8 fights, 7 wins (KO6) and a solitary loss a step closer to fighting for the national crown recently contested for by Gauteng’s ageing Anton Nel (45) who stopped
Hein van Bosch (42) in the 8th round Technical Knock (TKO) to win the vacant title. Boxing SA has mandated Nel to defend first against KZN’s Sibusiso Sibiya in three months. Jacobs who will be rated in the second spot in the country will get the crack at the title that has always eluded this province since there were no heavyweights in the past. In the main supporting bout, Mzwabantu Dabaza beat Asandiso Mancapa on points over six rounds while Simo Mbande stopped Luvuyo Mzamo TKO 4 in the main preliminary bout. Siyabonga Blaauw stopped Thandolwethu Wati TKO5. In the other bouts, all over 4-rounds Mzuvukile Daniels KO’d 1 Cecil Screetch, Bulelani Phillips beat Thando Mahlahla on points, Zimkitha Lane beat Xolisa Kana on points, Sindile Manengele beat Bulelani Kwanini on points, Siphosethu Ncisana stopped Yanga Ndoyana KO’d1 and Mzwamadoda Jibiliza beat Ayanda Fatyi on points.
Knocked down and out is Ivan Strydom who lost his EC Heavyweight title against challenger Unathi Jacobs at the Nangoza Jebe Community Hall in New Brighton at the weekend. Referee Lizo Jordan called the bout over in 2min 47sec of the first round. PHOTO:THEO JEPTHA
