Grave concern over ‘cross’ criminals THAMSANQA MBOVANE

he KwaNobuhle Cemetery in Bucwa Street is known as the place where 28 victims of the 1985 Langa Massacre are resting in peace.
However, today people who take short cuts through the graveyard, to and from their homes, are being attacked by thugs kneeling down, pretending to be a “cross.” Nontando Yantolo (65), a victim of the “cross” in this graveyard, said the incident happened while she was walking through the graveyard to her house in Duduza last Month. “It was getting dark outside. The thug
was kneeling down in the graveyard. His elbows were sticking out side by side and he posed like a cross.” “The culprit rose and threw himself on me. He robbed me of my R100 note. I didn’t even scream because no one would hear me in the graveyard. I didn’t want to open a case with the police, as I was scared they would just ask me why I was taking a short cut through the graveyard.” Mthubanzi Mniki, Nelson Mandela Bay spokesman, said, “We would like to advise people not to take short cuts, but use the tarred roads instead. The cemetery is fenced, but people keep on making gaps, in order to cross through the graveyard to their homes. By doing so, they become victims of the alleged ‘crosses’..”
