Boxing promoters fight TV blackout E

ASTERN Cape boxing promoters are not happy with the television black-out that has continued to stifle the development of the game - for almost three years.

This became evident when the EC Boxing Promoters Association Executive Committee had their meeting in the Nelson Mandela Bay last Saturday.

Rubbing salt into the promoters’ wounds, some of whom promote from their own pockets (without sponsorship), was the failure of the governing Boxing South Africa (BSA) to distribute the resolutions of the 2013 Boxing Indaba for their convenience, they said.

“We had our first meeting of the year here because as the Eastern Cape structure we believe we must rotate so as to give our members in Mandela Bay the honour to host us,” said the Association’s Secretary Max Mabuti making mention of Sibongile Nkebe and Mbulelo Mfama who are both members of the promoters’ executive committee.

According to Mabuti, the meeting was held to discuss issues of major concern to the promoters - one of which was the unavailability of the SABC to broadcast fights.

Mabuti said that without the support of TV through broadcasting of fights, boxing lost financially and many boxers suffered as a result.

“This issue was discussed at length in the Na-

tional Boxing Indaba but up until now BSA has failed to distribute the Resolutions which had a major bearing with regard to the televising of fights,” said Mabuti.

BSA Acting CEO Loyiso Mtya, however, would hear none of it.

Mtya charged, “They are not brave enough to stand for the truth. Those promoters are cowards who are not addresing the actual problem because they know exactly who is holding boxing to ransom.

“We are surprised that our promoters are still discussing receiving the resolutions at this juncture. It is true that they have not received the resolutions as they still have to be finalised.

“But we have sent correspondence to them saying, according to the Indaba resolution, promoters must start applying for dates for their fights to be televised,” said Mtya.

It was announced after the meeting Sports Minister Fikile Mbalula had with the SABC and promoter Branco Milencovic two weeks ago that boxing will be back on TV as from April this year. Mtya said BSA did not send any communiqué to the contrary.

According to Mtya, BSA wanted boxing to be televised in a manner that will level the playing field.

“We want all the promoters to get equal chances and that TV does not benefit a few. We want all our boxers and promoters to get equal opportunities. It’s now time for promoters to act and not to dilly-dally and complain,” said Mtya.

Phelophepha “miracle” health train now in the Bay INDABA REPOTER THE fully equipped Phelophepa Health Train, an initiative of the Transnet Foundation, will be stationed at the Swartkops Station until Valentine’s Day (February 14) to provide healthcare services to impoverished residents from Nelson Mandela Bay. Known as the miracle train, Phelophepa provides vision screening programmes, health, oral and dental care, screening for diabetes and cancer, psychological counselling services, basic health education awareness and community counselling

workshops, amongst others, are provided on a daily basis.

Since the Phelophepa Train can only be in an area for a limited period, teams are sent out into the community to market the facility prior to entering an area with the intention to complement and support existing facilities.

The public is advised that services will be provided between 7am and 4pm from Monday to Thursday, and from 7:30am to 12:00 (noon) on a Friday.

The train is not open during weekends.

Man arrested for unlicensed firearm

NCEBA DLADLA MEMBERS of the South African Police Service (SAPS) in New Brighton have warned residents against robbers on paydays and month ends.

This is following the arrest of a 26 year old man found by police in possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition last Friday.

Police spokesperson Constable Mncedi Mbombo said, “New Brighton police members doing their daily patrol duties around Sheya Kulati Drive, which is lately becoming a hot crime spot, saw two suspicious looking men entering the Spar Shopping Centre in the street.”

they started to walk faster but the police members were faster.

They caught up with the suspects and after identifying themselves and asking for permission to search them they discovered that one of the suspects was carrying a silver 9mm pistol with ten live rounds of ammunition.

The 26-year old could not produce his firearm licence when asked for one.

Police took the suspect to the police holding cells after opening a case docket. He was expected to appear in court soon.

“The firearm was going to be used to commit crime and to rob people, as it’s month end and payday for some people, said Mbombo.

He warned, “People must please be alert to these robbers - walk and drive awake and please don't be shy to report crime to the police.”

No truth in Home Affairs jobs for matrics INDABA REPORTER THE Department of Home Affairs has issued a statement denying claims in some social media circles that the department is offering training with prospects of employment to matriculants.

“The Department wishes to put it on record that such reports are false and devoid of truth, with a potential to mislead young people who are desperately in need of work,” the statement read.

Home Affairs has, however, initiated a cadet programme for unemployed graduatesthrough its Learning Academy, in the quest to contribute to the national drive for skills development and fighting unemployment. .

The cadet programme for graduates will first run as a pilot with effect from February 2014.

In this regard the selection of prospective candidates has been finalized.

The cadets will be taken through the Home Affairs national certificate on home affairs services. The aim is to produce skills and offer experience to young graduates, who may, depending on their performance, be absorbed within the services or seek employment in other departments and elsewhere.

The cadet programme is part of the strategy to attract, train and introduce to the public service new officers who are security-conscious, professional, hard-working, patriotic and endowed with the right attitude of mind to serve the people with dignity while upholding the principles of Batho Pele and the Constitution.

House robbery, attempted murder investigated NCEBA DLADLA UITENHAGE South African Police Service (SAPS) members are investigating a house robbery and attempted murder after a 48year old man was allegedly shot in Kamesh, Uitenhage on Monday February 2.

According to police spokesperson Warrant Officer Basil Seekoei, it is believed the victim, from Cacatha Street, Tambo Village in Kamesh, had an argument with another man a day before the incident.

“It is alleged that two suspects knocked at the door of the complainant’s house at

around 3 am on Monday and when the latter opened the door the suspects forced their way into the house. It is believed that one of the suspects pulled out a fire-arm and shot the complainant in his left-shoulder and the upper right leg,” said W/O Seekoei.

He added that the suspects allegedly took cash and cell phones and fled the scene.

The man is in a serious but stable condition in a Uitenhage Provincial Hospital, said W/O Seekoei.

K’Nobuhle Adult Centre open to those who want to better their chances in life NCEBA DLADLA REALISING the value of education in life, KwaNobuhle lad Luvuyo Nqakula took the plunge last year to register for and study matric subjects at the KwaNobuhle Adult Centre. And, he passed.

Nqakula (24), otherwise known as Ghetto to many of his friends, failed matric in 2007.

He was a learner at Thanduxolo High School.

A budding Hip Hop musician, Nqakula thought that he could easily get a job and live a promising life. But after three years of kicking the dust in the streets of KwaNobuhle, he realised that without education, he was wasting his time.

“I realised that education is important.

Education is a key to success. So I decided to find my way back to school,” said Nqakula proudly.

Adult Centre situated at the previously unused Mlungisi Perfector High School in Bucwa Street, Nqakula went to register for a few Level Four Subjects with the aim of improving his marks to get a matric certificate.

“I attended school for the whole of last year and learnt a great deal from the teachers at the centre,” said Nqakula who is currently awaiting his matric certificate.

He added that he is not only proud of his matric results, but also of the recording of his Hip Hop Mixtape entitled “The Beginning”.

The centre is also very proud of Nqakula’s achievements, according to a Level 4 teacher Ntombizodwa Phillip.

Phillip called upon all those interested in education to improve their chances in life to come and register at the centre.

The centre offers the following learning areas or courses: Auxiliary Healthcare, Early Childhood Development, Travel and Tourism, Life Orientation, English, isiXhosa, Information and Communications Technology (ICT) and Maths Literacy.

People pay only R30 to do all the Learning Areas except for the Computer Studies (ICT) for which they pay R200 which is payable in instalments.

Classes are open from Monday to Thursday from 2pm to 5pm for the Levels 1-3 . The Level 4s are from 12 noon to 3pm.

“We appeal to everyone, young and old, to come and register with us so that they improve their chances in life,” Phillip said, adding that their Level 4 courses were accredited by Umalusi.

“People with our Level 4 can get a job or be admitted at any FET College if they wanted to continue with their studies,” Phillip told PE Express Indaba, adding that it was never too late for those who want to better their chances in life, like Nqakula.

South Africa’s “Satchmo” for Concert in the Park INDABA REPORTER SOUTH Africa’s own “Satchmo,” Prince Lengoasa, will be blowing his horn at the annual Concert in The Park this Saturday and Sunday February 8 and 9 in Victoria Park.

Prince, as he is affectionately known, has performed as “Satchmo” with the National Symphony Orchestra (NSO) since 1999.

Strictly Come Dancing fans will recognise him for his Louis Armstrong performance.

This year’s Concert in the Park brings you “Prince” the trumpeter and singer working in Jozi and South Africa at large and who has had the world as his teacher.

Prince has worked with the likes of McCoy Mrubata as part of “McCoy and friends”, with Themba Mkhize on a number of projects, as well as Caiphus Semenya and Letta Mbulu, Sibongile Khumalo, Hugh Masekela, Jonas Gwangwa and Khaya Mahlangu.

He is a choirmaster and bandmaster in the Salvation Army where his music career started.

Prince is also a founding member and the first music director of The Gauteng Jazz Orchestra.

This year for the first time Prince will be sharing the stage with the lovely multi-platinum singer and songwriter Nianell and South Africa’s favourite conductor Richard Cock.

Opportunity for eligible SA voters to register NCEBA DLADLA ELIGIBLE South African voters will have the opportunity to register this Saturday and Sunday (February 8 to 9) before the National General Elections take place some time later this year.

According to a statement last week by the Department of Home Affairs Director-General Mkuseli Apleni, the department will focus on plans in support of this voter registration and the mass roll-out of Smart ID cards.

Both the green bar-coded IDs and smart ID cards will be acceptable as legal forms of identity for purposes of registration and voting during the upcoming elections.

Red tide worst ever in province LIZEKA TANDWA

Minister of Home Affairs Naledi Pandor has directed the department to develop plans in support of the IEC during the voter registration weekend, said Apleni.

The Department of Home Affairs stands ready to issue IDs including delivery of uncollected IDs and Temporary Identity Certificates.

“As part of the overall plan of the department for the voter registration weekend and in keeping with past practices, we have directed managers in all Home Affairs offices across the country to ensure that all home Affairs offices be opened from 8am to 5pm on both days and that all Home Affairs offices operate to full capacity during the two-day voter registration weekend.

“We join the call by the IEC for those South Africans who are eligible to vote to take advantage of the voter registration weekend to approach Home Affairs offices across the country for assistance in acquiring these enabling documents to exercise their democratic right to vote in this year that marks the 20 years since the dawn of peace, freedom and democracy,” said Apleni.

Minister Naledi Pandor has announced that the department was ready to roll-out the smart ID cards to the public with effect from 01 February.

The department has successfully revamped 28 offices across the country to facilitate applications for the Smart ID cards.

With effect from February 1, the depart-

ment is ready for applications for the smart ID cards from the following categories: 1. 16-year old and above first time applicants can apply any month of the year 2. 60- year old pensioners born during January and February must approach home affairs offices during the month of February to apply 3. From March this year, 60-year olds and above can apply during their months of birth 4. All other citizens should wait for invitations to apply At this stage, applications for the Smart ID cards can be made at the following offices: In the Eastern Cape: Port Elizabeth, Mthatha and King William’ s Town.

A LOCAL Marine Biologist said the

red tide, which is currently stretching along the Eastern Cape Coast from Port Alfred to Tsitsikamma, is the worst red tide in the Eastern Cape and the first to have a large scale bloom of a rare species called Lingulodinium polyhedral.

Residents have been advised to stay clear of seafood and even swimming in the water, till the tide clears.

Senior Lecturer and Marine Biologist at NMMU Zoology Department, Dr Nadine Strydom, warned that it was not advisable to swim in the red bloom as water may be swallowed.

“There are always many species of dinoflagellate present at any one time in the bloom. When a red tide bloom is around, often there are more bacteria in the water too as a result of decomposition and this can make people sick. It is safest just to avoid all seafood during red tides, including fish.”

She said there was no way of knowing how long this tide would be in the EC coastal waters.

“We just have to wait for the bloom to run its course naturally. It is a natural event that could pass with minimal impact or cause major fish kills when it dies off.”

Strydom said the worst that could happen is that major fish kills could follow when the red tide organisms start dying off and decomposing. This would have huge implications for the metro as they would have to clean beaches of decomposing fish posing a health hazard with bacteria and flies.

Fish have already started washing up at local beaches.

Strydom explained that there was nothing that people could do other than watch the show at night.

“Both Noctiluca and Lingulodinium fluoresce at night when agitated. This is clearly seen in breaking waves along PE shores at the moment.”

“There has been speculation that this tide came from passing ships releasing ballast water collected off the Cape and others speculate that the seismic testing could have caused the red tide. These are yet unfounded speculations.

“It is an unusual event but nevertheless anomalies occur in nature. Our climate is changing and we are going to see unusual events like this occurring more often,” she said.

PE’s Jikani beat Madikane to win EC title NCEBA DLADLA HARD work and perseverance paid off for a Port Elizabeth pugilist Lungisa Jikani who beat Eastern Cape Junior Welterweight Champion Mlamli Madikane of East London over 10 blistering rounds at the Vernon Gamanda High School in Walmer/Gqebera on Sunday.

The duo’s battle was the main bout of Andile Siqwepu’s Andile Boxing Promotions bill which was sponsored by the Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture.

“The fight was hard. Madikane was the harder puncher, but Jikani’s boxing skill and ability to use the parameters of the ring saved him.

“He was a better boxer. He even dropped Madikane in the early rounds. Were it not for the experienced corner manned by Boy Boy Mpulampula, Madikane could have been knocked out. He was giving up but the corner spurred him on,” said Boxing South Africa (BSA) Nelson Mandela Bay Service Provider Mthunzi Mapitiza.

Jikani’s mentor Caiphus Ntante conceded that the fight was not easy. His highly motivated protege, better known as Naughty to boxing fans, was physically and mentally fit for the fight, he said, adding that indeed Madikane did not want to leave the title behind.

Jikani becomes the fifth boxer from Caiph Camp to win a provincial title - following in the footsteps of the now retired China Mdlalo (Junior Middleweight), Masixole Botile (Super Middleweight), Lesley Hope (Light Heavyweight) and Ivan Strydom (Heavyweight).

Though Botile and Strydom have since lost their titles, Ntante believes winning them back is not far-fetched. He believes the next stop for Jikani is to win the national title.

Currently the region boasts of Unathi Jacobs (Heavyweight), Lesley Hope and now Jikani as the EC champions, according to the proud BSA boss.

Another Ntante prospect is the up and coming Siphosethu Ncisane who beat Xolisa Magusha of Whittlesea over six-rounds to stake a claim to the EC Strawweight title held by East London’s Malibongwe Mntusanto - a fight that is touted to be sometime in March.
