HE Laureus Sport for Good Foundation Trust South Africa announced on Monday the inclusion of Nelson Mandela Bay netball star, Zanele Mdodana, in their elite group of sports star ambassadors.

The announcement was made at a media conference held at the Mercedes-Benz South Africa (MBSA) head office. Mdodana also participated in coaching youngsters from the Laureus ‘Sport for All’ programme in Atteridgeville, who were hosted by MBSA at their 2014 Employee Volunteer Week activities. Laureus has a long and distinguished history of using the power of sport to nurture the young South African leaders of tomorrow. Morné du Plessis, Chairman of the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation Trust South Africa, says, “The passion and dedication of the Laureus ambassadors is a major driver of the success of our social upliftment programmes. We thank Zanele for accepting the nomination to join our ambassadors, and look forward to a long and successful association with her.” Joining du Plessis at the media conference in welcoming Mdodana to the fold were fellow Laureus ambassadors mountaineer Deshun Deysel, former rugby international and radio talk show host John Robbie and paralympian Natalie du Toit. Mdodana is a valued addition to the ambassador group and has established herself as one of the top notch sports coordinators at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University. Having played netball at the Commonwealth Games for the SPAR Proteas team, and in contention for the 2014 Commonwealth Games in July this year, Zanele is a role model for girls in South Africa. Now one of the senior players in the team, Mdodana leads from the front and has been captain and vice-captain of the SPAR Pro-
teas. Mdodana has great influence with young people, thanks to her impressive achievements. She urges young girls to prioritise their education, keep participating in sport and to strive to achieve their dreams and goals. “It takes hard work to achieve anything worthwhile and you really need to persevere. It’s very important to get an education and I’d like to encourage all young persons that they give their best in the classroom. This philosophy is something I will pursue as an Ambassador for Laureus,” she says. The Laureus Sport for Good Foundation Trust South Africa supports 15 sports-based community programmes nationally. Since its inception, the Foundation has raised more than R80 million for projects which have helped to improve the lives of more than 78 000 young people. Netball South Africa president Mimi Mthethwa welcomed the accolade for Mdodana saying she deserved it for commitment and service to the national team over several years. “Zanele is a wonderful role model and leader and will certainly appeal to sports people across boundaries. NMMU medical school plans gain momentum REPORTER A TEAM driving Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University’s quest to establish a medical school will soon meet Department of Health officials to further discuss the university’s impressive plans to grow its professional qualifications in line with national health care needs. This follows a successful visit by Health Minister, Dr Aaron Motsoaledi, to NMMU’s Faculty of Health Sciences after the national launch of the First Things First HIV and AIDS campaign on the campus last week. Citing NMMU as “a well-established university with a strong Faculty of Health Sciences”, Dr Motsoaledi said the country needed many more medical schools and welcomed NMMU’s initiative. The NMMU team led by Health Faculty Dean, Professor Vic Exner and Directors of Schools will meet the Department of Health in the coming weeks to plot the best way forward on various points raised by the Minister to address the needs of the country. NMMU’s medical school could be the country’s ninth, after a 29-year hiatus, following the re-establishment of Medunsa and a new university in Mpumalanga in the next two years. Motsoaledi said the university’s “bottom-up” approach for establishing a fully-fledged medical school by 2018 was “impressive” and deserving of support in the long term. “We have 51 million people in South Africa
and only eight medical schools. In Cuba they have 11 million people and 27 medical schools. This anomaly is so serious and needs to be addressed,” Dr Motsoaledi told those leading the process at NMMU. NMMU will see other essential health qualifications like dietetics, emergency medical care and the clinical associates offered before the fully-fledged medical degree in 2018. This “bottom-up” approach is following international trends which over the past 20 years have shown the need and effectiveness of new approaches to health sciences education and in particular medicine. The university has also proposed an alternative, more economic approach to education. The university is proposing new ways to allow students from disadvantaged backgrounds who show potential to eventually gain access to the medical degree programme. Currently, medical school models are less capable of creating such opportunities as they are constrained by the traditional six- year degree programme approach. “We want to offer a meaningful but worldclass medical school, one that responds to South Africa’s conditions and needs,” said Exner, who, along with an expert reference group, hopes to have a blueprint for the medical school by mid-year. This process will include in-depth engagement with local communities, health care professionals and various leaders before finalising NMMU’s proposal to the Minister.
Motherwell Cluster nabs 226 suspects NCEBA DLADLA CRIME prevention strategies during police Special Operations in the Motherwell Cluster over the weekend resulted in 226 people being arrested. The aim of the special operations by police based in the stations of Motherwell, Kamvelihle, Kwazakhele, KwaDwesi, New Brighton, Swartkops and Kinkelbos was to eradicate crime by squeezing the space for criminals in those areas. According to police spokesperson Warrant Officer Dumile Gwavu the suspects were arrested for different crimes such as murder, housebreaking and theft, selling of liquor without licence, possession of drugs,
assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm, armed robberies and theft of motor vehicles. He said some with outstanding warrants of arrest were actually nabbed, while some were arrested for intimidation, contravention of a protection order, use of motor vehicle without owner’s consent, domestic violence, drunk and disorderly conduct, driving under influence of liquor, failure to give name and address, shoplifting and possession of stolen property. In breaking it down, W/O Gwavu said 128 suspects were arrested in Kwazakhele and KwaDwesi. In New Brighton there were 29, in Swartkops 20, while in Kinkelbos 3 suspects were arrested and at Motherwell and Kamvelihle 46 suspects were arrested.
New Brighton police foiled attempted armed robbery NCEBA DLADLA NEW Brighton police arrested a man in connection with attempted armed robbery in a Somali shop in Seyisi, KwaZakhele last Thursday. They recovered a 9mm firearm with live ammunition. Police spokesperson Constable Mncedi Mbombo told PE Express Indaba that two Somali nationals were busy off-loading groceries at their spaza shop last Thursday around 9am when two unknown suspects attacked them. “The shop owners were busy off-loading when one suspect pointed a firearm at the driver who was still inside the vehicle and demanded money. “The other suspect then grabbed the Somali who was outside the vehicle while the gun-toting suspect tried to throw the gun in the direction of the driver,” said Mbombo, adding that on realising that he had a gun inside the vehicle, the driver sped off. Using the cellphone of the one man they kidnapped, the suspects called the runaway shop-keeper to plead that he left the gun in a particular place and inform them without telling the police where it was, if he did not want them to kill his brother, said Mbombo. PORT Elizabeth members of the South African Police Services (SAPS) arrested a 19-year old suspect for attempted robbery in New Brighton last Wednesday. Police recovered an Olympic 6 revolver that the suspect and his three accomplices wanted to use in the robbery. According to police spokesperson Warrant
Officer Dumile Gwavu, four suspects went into the Shoprite Liquor Store at Dubu Street, New Brighton last Wednesday at around 12.35pm. “It is alleged that the four men went into the shop (with the intention to rob) but the security guards were on the alert,” said Gwavu, adding that the security acted quickly to prevent what could have been an armed robbery. “One suspect was arrested inside the shop,

John Tallant Road now closed in both directions NCEBA DLADLA MOTORISTS are advised that John Tallant Road, a major arterial route in Nelson Mandela Bay, is now closed in both directions for general traffic. It is expected to be closed until June this year. According to Municipal spokesperson Kupido Baron, motorists travelling from the Port Elizabeth Central Business District in the direction of Swartkops hoping to use John Tallant, should rather continue using Burman
Road, Baxter or Stephen Streets. Motorists can also use Grahamstown Road via Deal Party, according to Baron. Large trucks with trailers, he said, must access the N2 via Burman Road, Deal Party. Baron said, “John Tallant Road carries large volumes of traffic between the N2 and the industrial suburbs of Deal Party and Perseverance, as well as serving as a major link for traffic travelling to and from Uitenhage, hence the construction – to accommodate the increasing traffic volume – started on 4 April 2013.”

Where is Winston Waldron? NCEBA DLADLA MEMBERS of the South African Police Service in Port Elizabeth are looking for information on the whereabouts of Winston Waldron who went missing on February 10 this year. Waldron, of Old Grahamstown Road, Swartkops, left home at about at 7.10am to go to New Brighton Court. “He was last seen waiting next to Riverside Fruiterers Café at Swartkops for transport that was going to pick him up,” said SAPS Motherwell spokesperson Warrant Officer Dumile Gwavu. According to W/O Gwavu, Waldron did not arrive at court. He also did not go back home and has not been seen since that day. Gwavu said members of the SAPS are appealing to anyone who has information about the whereabouts of Waldron to please contact Captain Henk Rall of Swartkops Detectives at 0 082 303 0563.

Powered pedals to beat criminals and fuel prices HUMEWOOD’S Police on beach patrol have recently been given more power to perform their duties, literally. Local entrepreneur and hair stylist Simon Clark found a kit on Chinese e-bay for powering bicycles while he was surfing the net for fighter plane spares. He was so impressed with what he saw, that he is now selling the kit in Port Elizabeth. To put his new-found business concept to good use, he has recently donated his Super Cycles to the Humewood Police Stations who use these powered bicycles for their beach patrols. According to Simon, the Super Cycles Bicycle engine kit comes with everything you need to turn normal bicycles into a motorcycle, with little need for pedalling and no need for a licence. Clark said the kits are powered by a 48cc aircooled petrol engine which is capable of 50km/l of petrol and a legal maximum speed of 45km/h. Clark said the kits which sell for around R2 000 and come with full instructions, fit most normal bicycles and are easy to fit.
“If you can use a spanner, and a screwdriver and follow simple instructions you should be able to do it,” said Simon, but admits that a little mechanical ability is a big help. For those that don’t want to do it themselves the company will fit it for you or you can buy a complete fully installed brand new bike for around R3800. Humewood Police Constable, Mfuneko Tyibilika, who now uses the donated engine kit, said this new invention has made a huge and significant difference in his work. “The engine has almost totally eliminated the need for pedalling which helps us a great deal when chasing a suspect. The bikes also help us in tight areas where we would have to search by foot, but now we can drive ourselves through any forest or woods faster and easier,” said Tyibilika. Humewood Police VSU Co-ordinator, Annelize Jerling said they would also be using the bikes to patrol and secure the city during the upcoming Splash Festival and Ironman.

KwaNobuhle woman nabbed for murder A 45 year-old KwaNobuhle woman appeared in the Uitenhage Magistrate Court on Monday for allegedly stabbing a 46 year-old man to death after an argument. According to police spokeperson Warrant Officer Basil Seekoei, the incident hap-

World Oral Health Day celebrates healthy smiles THE Oral Hygienists’ Association of South Africa will celebrate World Oral Health Day (WOHD) an international day, on March 20. The day celebrates the benefits of a healthy mouth and promotes worldwide awareness of the issues around oral health and the importance of good oral hygiene to young and old. A total of 90% of the world’s population will suffer from oral diseases in their lifetime of which many can be avoided with increased funding for prevention, detection and treatment programmes. The day offers the oral health and dental community a platform to educate, take action and help reduce the global oral disease burden. It also helps raise awareness by encouraging individuals, families, communities and governments to take action. What needs to be done?
· As a parent ensure that your child brushes his/her teeth morning and evening after meals for 2 minutes, using a soft toothbrush and a pea-sized amount of toothpaste; · Small children should be assisted as they might not be able to brush properly yet. EC Women Football Team off to Germany NCEBA DLADLA NELSON Mandela Bay is represented by five women in the Eastern Cape Women Football Team that will be flying off to Germany for a tournament to be played from May 14 to 23. The trip to Germany by the Provincial Women Football Team is part of the Twinning Agreement between the Eastern Cape Government and the State of Lower Saxony. According to EC South African Football Association (SAFA) General Secretary, Isaac Klaas, this agreement between the two governments encompasses a lot of development issues that include sports as championed by the Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture.
In the team of 15 ladies, Nelson Mandela Bay is represented by Anelisa Ndyebi, Nwabisa Kolisi, Pakama Duru, Nosiphiwo Bottoman and Jessi Hartley among those hoping to represent their country at this level of football and possibly progress to play for Banyana Banyana in the not-too-distant future. The five players were selected from the teams that participated during the Premier Cup games hosted by Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality in Port Elizabeth last year. “We are very excited about this opportunity given to our players. This is indeed a good initiative by our government because it gives our players an opportunity to test their strength against some of the best players in the world. Germany is known for having very strong women’s football,” said Klaas.
Klaas was, however, not very pleased with the number of women involved in especially grassroots football development. “SAFA’s Vision 2022 calls for mass participation of both male and female Under-13 and U-15 players at grassroots level. These are the players we hope will be ready to represent Bafana Bafana and Banyana Banyana by 2022. “At this stage, however, about 70 per cent of males do participate in almost all the regions whereas only 30% of their female counterparts do,” said Klaas, adding that while they were excited with such developments as the trip to Germany which is not the first for an EC delegation, they still would like to see more than 50% of women in all the SAFA regions participating.

That’s the promise from the municipality’s Sports, Recreation, Arts and Culture Portfolio Chairperson Nomamerika Soul and the sponsors, Maqadi Ayanda, Ikamva Athletics and Warriors Running Club.

This Municipality-sponsored event, that used to be known as Motherwell Freedom Run and was changed to the Nelson Mandela Freedom Run to honour and to keep alive the legacy of the late Nelson Mandela, is aimed at celebrating 20 years of Freedom in the country, said Cllr Soul during the media launch at the PE City Hall last Thursday. Cllr Soul was speaking on behalf of the Executive Mayor Benson Fihla who could not attend owing to other pressing municipal duties. “The municipality has pride in this event, happening in the township (in Motherwell), talking transformation, inclusivity and unity of One City with One Goal,” said Cllr Soul,
who also noted the grand partnerships created by the companies involved in the freedom run. The event provides the city with economic spin-offs and according to Ikamva RC President and organiser of the event, Michael Mbambani, the country’s runners use other races to prepare for this the only road race in the EC Athletics Calender which also plays a pivotal role in helping those intending to take part in the half marathon and the Comrades. It pays R4000 prize-money for both male and female winners and has gold, silver and bronze medals for a number of participants who finish the race. This year’s event also partners with the municipality’s Wellness Centre which promotes the health and well- being of municipal employees. “This is your race, in your township, named after the most outstanding leader, freedom fighter and the statesman the world has ever seen. In honour of this great man, go out there and be part of this historic event,” said Cllr Soul, urging people of the metro to take part in the Nelson Mandela Freedom Run.
Varsity Athletics raises funds for community REPORTER NON-PROFIT community organisations will have an opportunity to raise funds for their institutions simply by attending the actionpacked Varsity Athletics meeting at the NMMU Stadium in Port Elizabeth on March 21. Madibaz athletics manager Nellis Bothma said schools, clubs, churches and charities would receive a R10 contribution for every spectator who attended the first instalment of the national four-meet series on their behalf. “It’s a fantastic initiative that allows the community to see some of the country’s most exciting athletes in action, while giving their own sports development funds a welcome boost.” The two-hour event – which showcases the best student athletes from the top eight universities in South Africa – starts at 5.30pm and will be televised live on SuperSport. Bothma said qualifying groups should register before Thursday, March 20, to receive their allocated number of free barcoded tickets. “All their spectators have to do is fill in their name, cellphone number and e-mail address on the back of the ticket to gain entry into the stadium. “For every person who presents one of these tickets at the gate before 6.30pm, Varsity Athletics will make the promised contribution to the relevant group’s development fund.” He said organisers were expecting a capacity crowd at the 10 000-seater stadium on the South Campus in Summerstrand.
Olympic pole-vaulter Okkert Brits will be the official flag bearer, while local entertainer Donna Africa will deliver her rendition of the national anthem. “This is the first time that NMMU is hosting a Varsity Athletics event, so we really want to make a splash.” The remaining track and field meets will take place at North-West University in Potchefstroom (April 14), Stellenbosch University (April 21) and the University of Pretoria (April 28). Bothma said free advance tickets would also be available to individual members of the public via the Varsity Sports Facebook page and website. “All you have to do is click on the icon and register by answering a short questionnaire.” Once the process was successfully completed, the e-ticket would be sent to the user’s email address, he said. “Then you either print it out or show it on your smartphone at the gate.” While registered users were entitled to two free tickets, Bothma said additional tickets could be purchased via EFT or credit card at a cost of R10 each. “If you arrive on the night and don’t want to use any of the available online technologies, you can also buy a ticket for R20 at the booth outside the stadium.” Fundraising tickets: Register for the fundraising opportunity before Thursday, March 20.
