Three dead, four injured in tavern attack N

NCEBA DLADLA AND LIZEKA TANDWA

EW BRIGHTON residents are still reeling in shock following the brutal murder of three men at a local tavern on Monday night.

Some residents believe the 7pm attack and the murder of Zolani Nelani, Khumbula Jacobs

and Masibulele Dayimani, aged between 30 and 35 years, at Chippa’s Tavern in Nibe Street was a deliberate hit despite police reporting it to be a random shooting. “Two suspects entered the tavern and shot randomly, killing three men instantly and seriously injuring four,” said police spokesperson Warrant Officer Thembi Gwe yesterday. The injured, who are between 41 and 53 years

of age, were rushed to a Port Elizabeth hospital. For their protection, Gwe did not want to divulge to which hospital the injured were taken. When PE Express Indaba visited the scene yesterday morning, members of the SA Police’s Forensic Department were still taking photographs and checking for finger-prints. According to eye-witnesses who spoke to PE Express Indaba on condition of anonymity, two

unknown men entered the tavern wearing reflector overalls and proceeded to the table where the three men were seated. They started shooting at the men without saying a word. “The gunmen shot the three men and while fleeing the tavern four other men where shot in the process,” said a witness.

Three dead, four injured in tavern attack

Continued from page 1 Still shivering in shock, the eye witness said the attackers first shot at Jacobs three times, and then fired at the other two men. “I was stunned at how it happened. The men were enjoying their drinks and suddenly I saw two guys come in. We thought they were customers,” said the witness. After the shooting the unknown assailants ran to a getaway car. A neighbour who also spoke on condition of anonymity saw the two men fleeing and getting into a red Polo after the shooting.

Police said the motive for the murders was not known. Nothing was taken in the attack. “We are following up on all leads and will leave no stone unturned in our investigations,” said Gwe. This is the second time that the tavern has been the scene of a fatal shooting. Taxi operator and municipal official Melekile Hani was gunned down in the tavern in 2010. “We have invited all tavern owners around the area to a meeting at Nangoza Jebe Hall today (Wednesday) at 10am to talk about the rise in crime in the area and to find out if there is a link between these attacks,” said W/O Gwe.

ADVERTORIAL: BOSTON CITY CAMPUS AND BUSINESS COLLEGE

Short courses are a foot in the door Many young school leavers face the unfortunate situation of being turned away by tertiary institutions. Although entry criteria may play a role, the main contributing factor is the limited number of spaces available for new students each year. According to Natalie Rabson of Boston City Campus and Business College, it is imperative that these students do not waste the year and become an unemployment statistic. She says that it is in fact a great opportunity to develop practical skills as a foundation which will also be useful in any job, future studies or career. Short courses and learning programmes which are available at Boston include basic to advanced computer skills, covering everything from basic keyboard and Internet skills to specific courses on various programmes. These include Microsoft Word, Excel and Powerpoint, as well as Adobe Photoshop and Dreamweaver. Learners can also enrol for the IT short learning programme or institute learning programme including CompTIA A+ and CompTIA N+ courses which will adequately equip them with the skills needed to get an entry level position in the IT industry as a technician. “These courses should not simply be seen as time fillers or just something to do for the year. They are extremely valuable and have been designed to give learners the skills directly related to the workplace. Various courses also have the added benefit of earning credits and gaining advanced placement for selected Boston HET courses in 2015,” explains Rabson. HET courses include a variety of career options aside from IT related courses such

as Media and Multimedia Studies to Accounting, Marketing and Sales, Tourism, Hospitality and Leisure. And while this selection means there is something for everyone, it can also be quite daunting especially for those who are undecided as to what they want to do. Boston, however, realises this, and therefore provides continuous guidance and support from the moment prospective students enter its doors, starting with its computerised assessment tool (Career Compass Assessment) and qualified career counsellors who are able to identify your interests, passions and skills and steer you in the direction of a line of study that will suit you. Furthermore, Boston’s method of tuition allows students to work at their own pace taking into account what other commitments they may have. This also means that learners who are aiming to apply for and continue studies for another Boston degree or diploma will not be held back should they work at a quicker pace. Students who need more time to complete their courses, or who do not speak English as a home language, may take a bit longer and are also able to work at their own pace and repeat their modules via the tuition method if necessary. The college also has convenient payment plans to enable fee payers to find a payment option to suit their needs. There are more than 40 Boston City Campus & Business Colleges throughout the country offering career guidance and counselling. Registrations for the various short courses, as well as second semester Degree and Diploma study options are open. To find out more about the courses on offer at Boston, visit www.boston.co.za, Like us on Facebook, or call us on 041 363 0778.

Exciting football at NMMU Soccer Charity Cup REPORTER THE NMMU Soccer Charity Cup tournament kicked off on Friday, 23 May 2014 organised by the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University’s third year Sport Management students with games played over 2 days. Exciting football was played with Strelitzia in their debut tournament emerging victorious over Linkside in the U19 boys division. The result had to be decided through a penalty shootout. Bethelsdorp High School had a double win and clinched the girls u19 as well as the boys U16 titles. Congratulations to all these teams. Victoria Park U/16 girls coach and losing finalist, Thobela Thoba, spoke very positively of the tournament and after spearheading its establishment in 2002 was very happy with the integration of a girls division into the NMMU Soccer Charity cup. “I’m very happy with how smoothly the tournament went and I also feel it is impor-

tant for girls also to be given the platform to achieve,” Thoba said. Sport Management third year students charity of choice was Operation Smile Madiba Bay in Mount Croix with all proceeds from the tournament given to the charity. Operation Smile Madiba Bay was founded in 1997 by Maureen Lamb who, after seeking permission from the Hospital Administration, started serving out-patients. Operation Smile Madiba Bay has grown into a home for children and elderly patients who are cared for and looked after through their illnesses. This event was made possible by ADT Security, Draping Creations, GC Diesel, Footballer, Sports World and Brian Bands who helped provide the resources needed for the 3rd year Sport Management students to host this event. The department of Human Movement Science at NMMU said they would like to thank all the schools for their support and look forward to another successful tournament next year.

KwaNobuhle youth engage in sport and church work NCEBA DLADLA THERE is a lot of activity in the KwaNobuhle LoveLfe Centre every day. There is more during the weekends. PE Express Indaba saw local netball clubs taking part in the league competition that organiser and coach Amanda Konono said was aimed at keeping the youth active in doing positive things. “We want local girls to stay safe and not engage in sex and to avoid early childhood pregnancy and Sexually Transmitted Infections,” said Konono, adding that they had young girls as young as 10 years of age taking part while members of their senior teams were unemployed sisters who were in their early 40s. “We get support from LoveLife and our parents but would still urge other big businesses to support us financially so that we can buy sporting equipment and kit among other needs,” said Konono who coaches and plays

for Cosmos Netball Club . Also in action were the Wesleyan Guild in KwaNobuhle who were busy preparing for the Consultation - a meeting of all their districts youth under one roof to discuss issues that affected the youth. The KwaNobuhle Chapter is working hard to raise R100 000 to make this trip possible and to ensure that they raise the funds, they have organised a couple of events currently taking place at KwaNobuhle LoveLife Centre. “We have organised a six-a-side soccer event at the LoveLife Grounds last Saturday and were able to raise a couple of rands,” said Local Sports Committee Organiser Sivuyile Mlombi (24). According to Mlombi, clubs paid R50 to take part in the soccer competition. He said they also sold food and biscuits and sweets and were very happy and appreciative of the local community support. The youth also played Pool Games just for fun.

FOLLOWING their string of poor performances, Young Ideas collected three all-important points in their bid to avoid relegation when they beat Real Aces in their MOFA Build It Premier League game at Motherwell NU 9 Stadium on May 25, 2014. Considering their bottom of the log table position, Ideas played their hearts out to earn a hard fought win. Their fate of surviving in the premier league would be determined if other relegation candidates keep on

dropping points. Milan Stars came down from 2-0 to register their 4-2 victory when they locked horns with Shining Stars. Highland Spurs devastated Tottenham Spurs 3-1 while Valencia drew goalless with Young Romans. Ikamva Movers maintained their winning ways when they cruised to a 4-0 triumph over Liverpool. Stars looked as if they were going to draw first blood but Langa lasses stood their ground. In essence both sides missed golden opportunities with their goalkeepers pulling brilliant saves. The first half score was goalless as neither side could break the deadlock. Chiefs’ midfielder Laeticia Smith pulled a long range shot to score their first goal. Anelisa Swartbooi came up with Chiefs’ second goal. In the dying minutes of the game, Swartbooi finished her brace to make the final score 3-0 in favour of African Chiefs. Drama occurred when the referee and two Golden Stars were robbed at gun point at New Brighton Oval after Stars drew 2-2 with KUBS. Bodene taught the students of PE College a free soccer lesson when they walloped them 11-2. Highbury shared the spoils goalless with Warriors.
