Mob burns man to death W NCEBA DLADLA
HAT started as an insignificant argument between two young initiates about how much the other knows about the rite of passage to manhood, referred to as Ukudodisana, resulted in a Kamvelihle family losing a son and their home to an angry mob of residents.
Simthembile Ncamiso (24) was allegedly forced to drink petrol and later burnt to death by an angry mob in Motherwell last Thursday. According to police reports, Simthembile was taking punishment for the sins of his younger brother Siyamcela (20) who was involved in an altercation with another young initiate about manhood in a tavern. “It seems the young initiate was asked certain questions about the intricacies of what’s happen-
ing in the bush and when satisfactory answers were not forthcoming, a fight broke out,” said Port Elizabeth police spokesperson Constable Mncedi Mbombo. A beaten young man went home and returned with his father. According to Mbombo, the father was also allegedly beaten by Siyamcela. This angered the community who went to Siyamcela’s home in Mngwevu Street and found Simthembile.
“The mob allegedly forced him to drink petrol and later burnt him to death,” said Const Mbombo, adding that the crowds later petrol-bombed the family home of the Ncamisos. No-one else was injured in the incident. “The father (46) heard a bang on the window. It was a petrol bomb from members of the community who were outside the house. Community members continued to throw stones until police arrived and quelled the fire. Continued on p 3

Masifunde trains learners to be change makers NCEBA DLADLA LEARNERS belonging to Masifunde had an opportunity to learn about the democratic values and leadership espoused by the first South African democratically elected president, freedom fighter and international icon Nelson Mandela during a camp held at Die Lapa in Skietfontein near
Somerset East from December 4 to 8. Masifunde, which is based at Walmer High School, organizes a summer camp each December as a reward for the learners who took part in at least 75% of the “Learn4Life” educational and interactive life skills activities, said Masifunde Fundraising and Com-

munications head, Edem Foli. Of the 250 learners from Walmer High, Victoria Park and Brendon High Schools taking part in Masifunde programmes, 100 learners got the nod for the camp. Said Folly, “We used South Africa’s anniversary of democracy to work with 120 learners on the importance of social equality and the values that come with democratic society.” Folli added that 20 learners from Algoa Park’s Ithemba Special Day Care Centre which provides educational and life skills support to mentally handicapped and often physically challenged children also made the trip, courtesy of Masifunde. The theme for the four days was Nelson Mandela, said Folli. Explaining, she said Madiba was the role-model and epitome of leadership and democratic values. Masifunde trains learners to be change makers who are role-models and multipliers of knowledge. They are expected to pass on what they have learnt through weekly lessons, project works and study trips in topics ranging from cultural identity, business orientation, drug and alcohol abuse, environment, HIV/Aids and peer pressure to their peers and members of the community. “Those who made it to the camp were expected to do presentations to their peers and members of the community, to teach them what they have learnt,” said Foli.
FAW equips pupils for school
First Automotive Works (FAW) and China-Africa Development Fund donated much needed stationery to learners at the Melisizwe Public Primary School in NU 10, Motherwell last week Tuesday, 13 January. The donation is in anticipation of the schools opening this week. China-Africa Fund Deputy CEO Aiwu Yang donated the stationery to Mlungisa Liyema, Esona Sakawuki, Sobhici Simamkele and Zamani Sanelisiwe. At the handover were Melisizwe‘s SGB chairperson Mbulelo Beyi (back), and in the middle row from left, HOD Zodwa Bonda and Nomathamsanqa George the Deputy Principal. China-Africa Fund operates under the China Development Bank and invests in Africa. Melisizwe Public Primary School was one of the six schools that received school uniform donations from FAW last year (2014). FAW is located in Zone 2 of the Coega Industrial Development Zone (IDZ) and as part of its social responsibility programme the company handed over school uniforms to 300 children attending schools in Wells Estate and Motherwell. Metro urge police to speed up investigation into councillor’s attack
NCEBA DLADLA
NELSON Mandela Bay Municipality has urged police to get to the bottom of the attack on the security guards at the home of Ward 16 Councillor, Xola Sabani, in Kwazakhele last week. Municipal spokesperson, Mthubanzi Mniki, said the shooting of the two security guards, a woman (38) and a man (58), who were also disarmed by their attackers, should be investigated before reaching any conclusion about the reasons behind it. “We are not sure at this stage. The weapons of the guards were taken and nothing in the premises was reportedly stolen. We are shocked and dismayed by the incident, but rely on the outcome of the police investigation,” said Mniki. Sabani too did not know the reasons for the attack at his home. He told PE Express Indaba that the security was organised by the municipality for his family home after he was threated by members of the community after a misunderstanding about housing development in the Ward towards the end of last year.
“Residents from Qaqawuli Informal Settlement were expecting the building of their houses but when the Municipal Building Plan came out, it included residents from MK Silvertown. They rejected it, claiming that the sites in the land they occupied belonged to their children,” said Cllr Sabani. According to Sabani, the same residents who elected him into office – residents he was representing in the council – threatened his life when he explained that municipal policies did not make provision for building houses for beneficiaries and their children. Since October last year, according to Cllr Sabani, there had been protests in the Ward and after consultation with the municipality and the police, it was decided that his home must have security guards. “The lives of security guards and police are always under attack by criminal elements. We are saddened by what happened to the two law-abiding citizens and wish them a speedy recovery,” said Sabani. Police spokesperson Constable Mncedi Mbombo confirmed the incident. He said the suspects escaped with two guns belonging to the security guards. Police were investigating two cases of attempted murder.

OMBUDSMAN
Provincial Department of Education (DoE) spokesperson Mali Mtima told the media last week that all National Senior Certificate (NSC) and Adult Education and Training (AET) 2014 candidates who wish to submit their application forms to have their scripts re-marked, rechecked and viewed must do so not later than today. No re-marking application forms will be accepted after today’s due date. Mtima said these candidates were required to pay: • R80 per subject for re-marking, • R18 per subject for re-checking; and • R160

per subject for viewing. He said these amounts did not apply to no-fee schools. “Viewing learners are advised to fill in a separate application form for viewing and submit it after the release of the re-marking or recheck results,” said Mtima, adding that if there was an improvement in the results as a result of re-marking, re-checking and viewing process, the candidate would be refunded the relevant fee. “All the concerned candidates must submit their application forms to their respective education district offices and make their payments there,” Mtima said. He said applicants should note that no postal orders, cheques or cash would be accepted at the Provincial office under any circumstances, as payments must be done at the district offices.

“Police members found Simthembile’s burnt body dumped in the bushes near the Coega IDZ,” said Mbombo. Cases of murder and arson are being investigated. “We were shocked. We tried to talk to members of the community but realised that it was not going to be easy as the matter is still under police investigation,” said Ward 56 Councillor Unathi Menemene, adding that the municipality was totally against residents taking the law into their own hands. By Friday last week the family had already moved to a safe place on the advice of the police. Constable Mbombo said the family would renovate and sell the proper-
ty. Nelson Mandela Bay Portfolio Head Cllr Fikile Desi, whose office oversees the tradition of circumcision with the House of Traditional Leaders, was also dismayed about the incident. “This is sad news. We do talk to the boys and young initiates about respecting the tradition of Ukwaluka. Only last year, Chief Ngangomhlaba Matanzima was here to speak about these things. We are against these petty things like ukudodisana. They mean nothing to the passage to manhood.” Desi said he would engage traditional leaders and the elders on what can be done to bring order to the tradition of circumcision.

Two boys drown in river
Health Train to visit the Bay
NCEBA DLADLA
REPORTER
PORT Elizabeth members of the South African Police Service (SAPS) have warned parents to make sure that children do not go and swim without supervision. This was after two Zwide township boys, aged 11 and 9 years old, drowned in Swartkops on Friday January 15 at about 5:30pm. According to police spokesperson Constable Mncedi Mbombo, this happened at Chatty River, behind Sea-salt when a group of about seven young boys were swimming in the river without the supervision of older people. “It is alleged that a 11 year old boy was trying to save the nine year old
boy from drowning. He was unfortunately unable to swim and they both drowned,” said Const. Mbombo. One of the boys ran to the location to report the incident after they realised that the two were not coming out of the river. “The bodies of the two boys were found by divers from Bluewater Bay,” Mbombo said, adding that the Kwazakhele police station has opened two inquest dockets for investigation. “We understand that it is summer and that children would like to swim to cool themselves down, but would like to urge parents not to let them go and swim without their supervision,” said Constable Mbombo. Meanwhile, Eastern Cape mem-
bers of the SAPS have issued a stern warning for parents, childminders and the public in general about the increase in the number of drownings in the province since the beginning of the year. According to provincial spokesperson Brigadier Marinda Mills, 54 young children of between 6-14 years of age drowned in the rivers, dams and lakes of the province. “We would like to appeal to parents, guardians and child minders to warn children about the dangers of going to swim without the permission of the parent or the presence of an adult who can swim, as some children have drowned trying to save each other from the raging waters,” said Major Gen. Zamuthango Mki.
THE fully-equipped Phelophepa Health Train, an initiative of the Transnet Foundation, will be stationed at the Swartkops Station from January 26 until February 6 to provide healthcare services to impoverished residents from Nelson Mandela Bay. The first Phelophepa coach – recipient of the United Nations Public Service Award in the “Improving Service Delivery” category in June 2008 – made its way to awaiting patients in rural South Africa in 1994 as a three-carriage eye clinic.
The project developed to two custom-built eighteen-carriage trains equipped with modern medical equipment. Known as the miracle train, Phelophepa provides vision screening programmes, health, oral, dental care, screening for diabetes and cancer, psychological counselling services, basic health education awareness and community counselling workshops. The public is advised that services will be provided between 7am and 4pm from Monday to Thursday, and from 7:30am to 12pm on a Friday. The train is not open during weekends.
HEALTH MATTERS: BROUGHT TO YOU BY LENNONS
Hope is available for a potentially devastating skin condition Monday 10 November 2014 “SOME of our patients have never been to the beach. Not because they can’t go, but because they are too ashamed to go. They just want people to stop staring at them. This skin disease has a terrible impact on people’s quality of life. And the sad thing is that it can be very successfully treated if it is properly diagnosed - but many people either don’t seek treatment or, if they do, don’t always get an appropriate treatment.” This is according to Sr Judy Wallace who is in charge of the dermatology ward at Groote Schuur hospital in Cape Town and who is Chairperson of the South African Psoriasis Association. She expresses frustration about the general lack of awareness and understanding of psoriasis. “There is a lot of stigma attached to psoriasis”, she continues. “There is a misconception that it is contagious, which is completely untrue! And it has nothing to do with bad hygiene! Nevertheless, this can lead to people with psoriasis isolating themselves, and even having difficulty finding or keeping employment.” The exact number of people with psoriasis is unknown, but it is estimated to affect up to about 3% of the world’s population – approximately 1 to 2 million people in South Africa. All ages may be affected, but it most commonly begins in the teenage and early adult years. Thereafter, it tends to remain throughout life, although there may be periods of improvement, or even remission, followed by recurrences. There is a strong genetic link to psoriasis. It occurs more commonly in people whose parents or siblings are affected. Almost three quarters of children with psoriasis have other members in their family with the condition, and the risk is doubled if a sibling and one parent have psoriasis.
Causes and symptoms It is not known what causes psoriasis. However, studies show that immune cells in the skin behave abnormally, causing skin cells, blood vessels and nerves to grow faster than usual. Most commonly, in around 90% of people with psoriasis, this results in clearly demarcated patches or ‘plaques’ of thick, red skin, covered with white or silver scales (called psoriasis vulgaris). These normally occur on both sides of the body over the back of the elbows, front of the knees, on the lower back and around the umbilicus. Approximately half of people with psoriasis also have involvement of the scalp or nails. The skin lesions can be very uncomfortable, causing itching, burning, bleeding and pain from irritated skin. In addition to this, messy flaking and the unsightly cosmetic appearance of the skin and nails can be a source of acute embarrassment, self-consciousness and frustration. Other less common variants of the condition include inverse psoriasis, where the lesions occur on the joint creases and skin folds and tend not to scale; guttate psoriasis, with widely distributed small red, scaly, ‘tear drop’ skin lesions; and generalised pustular psoriasis in which the person is very unwell with rapidly progressing tender pustules and widespread inflammation. Triggers A flare-up or worsening of the skin plaques may be triggered by various environmental and personal factors, including change in climate, exposure to chemicals or detergents, heavy drinking and stress. Plaques of psoriasis vulgaris may be triggered by physical trauma or skin damage. “Tattoos are notorious for triggering psoriasis”, says Dr Ayesha Moolla, a dermatologist in private practice in Gatesville in the Western Cape. “That’s because of the skin damage caused
by the needle while it is being applied. We call this the Koebner phenomenon, where psoriasis develops at the site of an injury.” Early diagnosis An early diagnosis is essential. However, there is a growing trend, says Dr Moolla, where people with skin diseases are self-diagnosing using the internet. “This is dangerous, because it means that frequently they get neither the correct diagnosis, nor the correct treatment. An untrained person can easily confuse psoriasis with other common skin conditions, and especially with eczema, which requires different types of treatment. You need to be properly assessed by a qualified healthcare worker.” Although there is no cure for psoriasis, symptoms can be controlled with treatment. Apart from managing the skin and improving psychological well-being, early diagnosis helps to identify people at risk of associated conditions and arthritis, where early recognition can reduce the chance of worsening health problems, joint damage and disability. Treatments Treatment will be individualised, advises Dr Moolla, and depends on the severity, site and type of psoriasis, and on the patient. “Sometimes a number of treatments might need to be tried before we find the one that is the most effective.” For mild to moderate psoriasis, especially where it affects relatively small areas of the skin, topical creams and ointments are sufficient to control the disease. Where topical treatments fail or the lesions are too widely distributed for topical application, alternative options include ultraviolet therapy and oral or injectable therapies that help to reduce the abnormal activity of the immune system.
“Topical treatments are extremely effective in many patients, and spare them from the side effects that can occur with oral medications”, says Sr Wallace. They include corticosteroids, vitamin D-based treatments, coal tar preparations and preparations to soften the skin or reduce abnormal growth of cells. An advance in topical treatment for psoriasis has been the development of a combination product containing betamethasone dipropionate and calcipotriol. On their own, both of these medications are effective, but, because they work against psoriasis in different ways, combining them together produces an additive effect. This combination has been shown in clinical studies to be rapidly and consistently effective and with fewer side effects than calcipotriol alone, helping to improve quality of life for patients with psoriasis. As psoriasis is a chronic disease, it requires lifelong treatment. Furthermore, it is important to keep the skin well moisturised and yourself well hydrated. Treatments should be used regularly, as prescribed to help prevent flare-ups. “Avoidance of too much sun exposure and sunburn, and excessive drinking and smoking can also help to control the disease,” advises Dr Moolla. Support groups Both Dr Moolla and Sr Wallace recommend that people with psoriasis should join a psoriasis support group through organisations such as the SA Psoriasis Association (www.psoriasis.org.za). “Joining a community that understands and shares experiences with people in the same boat, is one of the best ways of managing the disease. Likewise, the World Psoriasis Day website (www.worldpsoriasisday.com) is a valuable source of information, globally raising significant awareness of the disease,” concludes Dr Moolla.

Municipal engineering bursary scheme boost employment SINCE a strategy to counter the loss of engineering skills was conceived in 2004, the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality managed to employ the majority of the students who received comprehensive bursaries from the local government institution on a full time basis. Councillor Andile Mfunda, Portfolio Committee Chairperson for Infrastructure, Engineering, Electricity and Energy, said this initiative bodes well for the municipality since 30 of the 43 individuals who received bursaries from the municipality are already part of our team. “Another three will officially report for duty during the first two months whilst 9 are at various stages of completing their studies. Only one student left the municipality after finishing the compulsory working period. “We are also not just throwing these young men and women into the deep end, as Council approved an item in 2012 for the appointment of retired engineers to mentor the bursars and inexperienced staff. “This programme is extremely important as we not only give students an opportunity to study without the headache of worrying where the money for tuition, meals, accommodation and books will come from, they also get stipends while getting practical experience in the work place. To top it all, they are also assured of a permanent job after successfully completing their studies.
“With our intake of students this year, our aim is to address the need for qualified students in B Eng (Civil Engineering), BSc: Mechanical and B Sc: Electrical Engineering,” Mfunda said. The municipality will publish a call for prospective engineers to apply shortly. The criteria are as follows: Bursaries for study are available in the following engineering disciplines: BSc. Civil Engineering B. Sc./B. Eng Mechanical Engineering B. Sc. Electrical Engineering Who can apply: Grade 12 learners with South African ID numbers, who are permanent residents in South Africa. Must have Matric exemption, with Mathematics and Science, minimum B average (HG). Current students at university already studying B. Sc./Civil, B. Sc./B. Eng. Mechanical and B. Sc. Electrical Engineering. The bursary will cover tuition, residence and meal fees. The successful candidate will be required to enter into a binding contract with the Council after graduation for a period equal to the tenure of the bursary. Where bursars are required to undertake experiential training, as prescribed by the course, with the Municipality, an allowance will be paid to the bursar during this period. – REPORTER

Community members look forward to promoting women’s football SELBY MADIKANE THREE Motherwell NU 9 community members have established a women’s football club recently. Mzuvukile Reggie Khesi initiated the project and later on he was joined by his uncle Khululekile Michael Khesi and his neighbour Sindi Yako. According to Reggie, women’s football is neglected and there are few people who recruit girls to football. Reggie said, “Our aim of forming Volcano Ladies Football Club is to promote women’s football. We also want to uplift the standard of women’s football. There is a lot of talent but someone has to unearth the talent of the girl child. I think this idea of forming this club will change the lifestyle of these young girls. In sport there are life skills which are inculcated into the players.” Sindi Yako, who is an experienced nurse,
revealed that they were aiming high with their club. Yako said, “We would like to have developed the most disciplined professional players in 10 years’ time. I am convinced that we have the guts to produce great players. These girls are respectful and I feel honoured to deal with these young girls.” Reggie stated that they had two teams so far and they would like to have three teams before the end of 2015. However, Reggie stated that they would not be deterred by their challenges to accomplish their goals. “We do not have equipment and uniform for the players. We dig deep into our pockets because we want to take our club to another level. Some parents are supportive and we appeal to other parents to come on board. We would like to have parents to help us with their expertise.” Reggie can be contacted on 078 087 773 or at 105 Ngxothwane Street Motherwell NU 9,and Sindi Yako at 073 314 2923.

Chilli Boys lose 4-3 to Germany’s VfL Wolfsburg SELBY MADIKANE CHIPPA United produced an excellent performance despite losing 4-3 to Germany’s top side VfL Wolfsburg in their international friendly game played at Wolfson Stadium on Sunday. Chilli Boys did not respect the visiting team which played attacking football. Andile Mbenyane, Christopher Bergman and William Twala combined well in the midfield. Chilli Boys striker, George Akpabio, penetrated the defence of Wolfsburg’s Timm Klose and Marcel Schafer, and registered the first goal of the match. Mbenyane and Twala played good moves and the latter delivered a good pass to Siyabonga Zulu who failed to slot the ball to
the wide open goal. Wolfsburg did not give up and their midfielder Ivan Perisic scored an equaliser from the set-piece. Both sides went to the break drawing 1-1. Akpabio who was the man of the match pulled his second goal early in the second half. United increased their lead to 3-1 following a brilliant goal scored by Siyabulela Shai. The German team pulled three quick goals to rob United of their lead. Perisic was among Wolfsburg’s second half scorers.
