City boss assures fans of safety at stadium

ITY manager Mpilo Mbambisa has expressed shock and sadness over the death of a soccer supporter in the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium this past weekend and reassured soccer lovers that the stadium will be safe for this weekend’s action.

Mbambisa said at a media briefing on Monday that the municipality wished to state categorically that the past weekend’s incident was in no way an indication of the stadium’s safety systems or of the performance of the security services, in particular the SAPS. The man (in his thirties) was shot dead when two other supporters allegedly attempted to grab a policeman’s firearm from his holster.

Police and security officials had their hands full protecting the players during a pitch invasion after the Absa Premiership clash between Kaizer Chiefs and Chippa United.

“Along with our stakeholders, we are more than ready to host the Nedbank Cup Final on Saturday, May 16, and encourage all footballloving fans to watch the match on Saturday. In this regard, we re-emphasise our gratitude to the PSL and Nedbank for having awarded the playing of the final in Nelson Mandela Bay,” said Mbambisa.

Employees strike over wages, work conditions

No more free vaccines at private clinics

THIRTEEN employees of Big Bucks, a second-hand shop in North End, Port Elizabeth, have embarked on a legal strike following disagreements with their employers in wage talks.

The 13 downed tools, sang and toyi-toyied with placards in front of the shop on Wednesday, May 6. They vowed not to return to work until Wayne Parry, the owner of the shop, acceded to their demands.

They also solicited the assistance of the regional office of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) and the National Union of Public Service Allied Workers (Nupsaw) in the metro.

“We demand a 7% wage increment and employee benefits like a provident fund, medical aid, one-hour lunch break and improved conditions of employment in terms of the Basic Conditions of Employment Act,” said Khosi Paliso, an employee representative.

Paliso said their boss did not care about their welfare. Instead of increasing their current R700-a-week wages after so many years of them toiling and making money for his business, Parry employed casual workers, he said.

Another employee said there was no job description at Big Bucks. One was expected to be a driver, a merchandiser, salesperson and truck packer all at the same time.

“We are also expected to clean toilets, after all that,” he said.

“We’ve reached a deadlock with the company. They don’t want to go beyond 5%,” said Nupsaw organiser Lerato Thetheni.

“If they fail to accede to the workers’ demands, we’ll organise our family members, friends and supporters to come and toyi-toyi here. There won’t be business when we come,” EFF regional secretary Zet Vena said.

“Thirteen employees out of 28 are involved in a legal strike action. It is their right. However, we are opposed to them disobeying the agreed-upon picketing rules,” Parry said.

He said they had agreed to the demands for a one-hour lunch break, job descriptions, which he had supplied to the union, a retirement annuity of R50 per staff member per month and a wage increase of R250 over and above the 5% increase he had already given on February 1.

Parry accused the 13 of intimidating non-striking workers and damaging stock.

“They are preventing customers from entering Big Bucks.

“Employees are actually currently earning a basic wage of R966 a week. Over and above that, they are paid a weekly sales bonus of up to R150 a week,” Parry said. He also gave his employees five extra days leave a year, an annual bonus equal to at least two weeks’ wages and an interest-free loan facility of R3 000.

“We supply clothing at no cost to them.”

“We more than obey the Basic Conditions of Employment Act. If we did not, believe me the staff would take me to task,” he said, pointing out that a provident Fund and medical aid were not required by the act.

“I take exception to being accused of racism and challenge them to provide me with any incident of racism,” Parry said.

THE Eastern Cape Department of Health has

stopped supplying private clinics and pharmacies with free government vaccines, which means parents will now either have to pay vast amounts to have their babies and children vaccinated at these facilities, or make use of government clinics where the vaccines are still available to the public at no cost.

This decision was made by the department because they were “not comfortable with the idea that private clinics and pharmacies were charging a levy on vaccines that we are providing to them free of charge,” said Sizwe Kupelo, spokesperson of the EC Department of Health.

“These vaccines are available at all public health facilities at no cost,” Kupelo added.

Dewald van Eck, owner and pharmacist at Klinicare Lorraine, said they used to provide the free state stock vaccines and then only charged a levy.

“This was a service we delivered to the public, because government clinics are often so busy and people don’t want to stand in long queues,” Van Eck said.

But Kupelo said that was “an unfortunate excuse”. “We are doing everything in our power to improve our services. Currently we cover 84% of the total population. If people have a problem with long queues at the government clinics, they can pay for the vaccines at the private clinic.”

According to Van Eck, parents who opt to make use of private clinics or pharmacies can expect to pay the following fees for vaccina-

tions* (estimated costs): Babies 6 weeks – R1 500 10 weeks – R420 14 weeks – R1 500 9 months – R900 18 months – R600 Children 6 years – R320 Total = R5 240 “Most medical aids do pay for these vaccines, but not all of them, so some parents will have to pay cash,” Van Eck said.

Could this mean that parents would then choose not to have their children vaccinated?

Not necessarily, believes Teresa Hayward, registered private midwife in Port Elizabeth.

“I don’t think people will not have their babies vaccinated as parents want the best for their children and will either use medical aid or go to government clinics. This is a new practice anyway. Private clinics did not always get free vaccinations,” she said.

As a health professional, Hayward said she was very pro-vaccinations. “Your baby does need these injections as these diseases can really harm or kill your baby. Babies are most at risk in the first two years, therefore we recommend protecting your baby as soon as possible.

But the decision remains that of the parent whether to vaccinate or not.”

ANC ‘will address metro challenges’ THE ANC in Nelson Mandela Bay says it has formed a programme of action which includes door-to-door visits as an instrument of service to all the people of the metro.

The regional task team says the ANC is on a mission to take back its role of uplifting the poor.

“There was a time in Nelson Mandela Bay when the ANC was vibrant and its members and supporters participated in all its campaigns,” it said in a statement.

“The metro was the heartbeat and home of the ANC, occupying an extraordinary position in the unfolding struggle for democracy and for a better life for all the people of South Africa.”

Then, almost suddenly, it said, the ANC was in conflict with itself. Various leaders of the movement, from the national and provincial structures, arrived in the region intent on addressing the internal squabbles.

“The ructions negatively affected many of our branches and, concomitantly, had an impact on our metro.

“The ANC is now committed to comprehensively addressing the challenges in the metro, as stated by the president and secretary-general, who expressed satisfaction with the progress and work being carried out by the regional task team.

“Following the highly successful ANC Nelson Mandela Bay broad consultative meeting on April 25 at Humerail, where the programme of action was adopted with the full support of the ANC leagues, MKMVA, and all its alliance partners, the task team conducted intensive branch work and doorto-door visits across the metro were held from Thursday, May 7, to Sunday, May 10.

“There are two important campaigns the branches will be involved in. The first is a

clean-up campaign to remove refuse from our residential areas and it will involve schools and churches.

“The second campaign will include volunteers working with the community policing forums to detect and report crime in the areas where they live.

“There are five events which will be celebrated and observed on the ANC’s calendar from June to August.

“The first event is on May 25, Africa Day, which is the founding day of the Organisation of African Unity, now known as the African Union. The theme for 2015 is ‘Celebrating African Unity’.

“The second event is June 16, National Youth Day, when we will be commemorating the student uprising of 1976, when the youth cocked a snook at the apartheid regime.

“This is followed by Freedom Charter Day on June 26 to recall the Congress of the People that was held in 1955 at Kliptown near Johannesburg.

“There the blueprint for the democratic South Africa, the Freedom Charter, was endorsed as the best programme for what became possible only in 1994.

“The fourth event on July 18, Mandela Day, will commemorate the birthday of the late President Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela.

On this day we aim to make a call for all the residents, especially the schoolchildren and churches of the metro to spend time cleaning up the city to create a clean and healthy environment for all who live here.

“Thereafter we will commemorate that courageous display by our mothers when they marched on the Union Buildings on August 9, 1956, to show their anger at being forced to carry the hated dompas.” – REPORTER

Boyfriend (26) arrested after death of woman (50) A 26-YEAR-OLD man has been charged with murder after a 50-year-old woman was stabbed to death in Vuyisile Mini Street, KwaNobuhle, at the weekend.

Uitenhage police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Gerda Swart, said the man was believed to have been the boyfriend of the woman, Lungelwa Thys, who was found with stab wounds early on Sunday morning.

“Although the suspect acted as though he did not know what had happened, the two allegedly went to a tavern together the previous evening and were drinking. When they went back home, there was allegedly a fight between them which led to the man stabbing the woman,” Swart said. The suspect would appear in the Uitenhage Magistrate’s Court, she said.

List of mayoral candidates grows LIZEKA TANDWA THE list of mayoral contenders for Nelson Mandela Bay is growing by the day, with five candidates now said to be on the list.

ANC insiders say the top five on the list are Council for the Advancement of the SA Constitution chairman, Sipho Pityana, businessman Mandla Madwara, controversial former mayor Nceba Faku, soccer boss Danny Jordan and ousted mayor Nondumiso Maphazi.

ANC national spokesperson Zizi Kodwa said, however, that he could not say who would be selected come May 18.

“I can’t tell you what to expect when the ANC delegations come back to Nelson Mandela Bay. We have never said that anyone is going to be elected,” Kodwa said.

According to media reports, Kodwa said

there would be major changes to the ANC regional leadership.

On Monday last week, President Jacob Zuma, accompanied by a large delegation of the ANC’s top leadership, had closed meetings with the regional ANC leadership, discussing the technical report by a task team he appointed in January after disbanding the regional ANC leadership.

During the President’s visit, rumours flared that he would announce a new mayor and a major reshuffle in the region, but that was not the case.

ANC secretary-general, Gwede Mantashe, said the report outlined serious problems of capacity and maladministration in the ANC’s regional leadership.

Mantashe said they had been handed a report which outlined a series of problems and concerns for the ANC in the region, namely,

human settlements, bulk infrastructure and youth development.

He said the task team had made serious headway in its report and was comfortable with the organisational work being done.

The task team had highlighted a serious need to intervene in the metro’s ability to deliver regarding sanitation, water and housing, with particular concerns being corruption and slow delivery of the bus rapid transit system (IPTS).

The current executive mayor, Benson Fihla, who is rumoured to have a yearning to be replaced, was not worried about being replaced by the ANC, according to municipal spokesperson, Kupido Baron.

In an interview with Die Burger, Madwara said for now the replacement of the mayor was only a rumour until it had been expressed officially.

Hijack warning to women drivers REPORTER WOMEN drivers have been warned to be on the alert after two suspects were apprehended by security officers who foiled their attempt to hijack a woman in the New Brighton area.

ADT guarding manager, Jacobus January, and armed response officer, Luwezo Faku, were on their way to collect staff members for duty on Wednesday, April 29, when they noticed two men standing near a stationary vehicle at the traffic lights in New Brighton.

The woman driver appeared to be in dis-

tress and as the officers approached the car, they saw one of the men try to climb into it, while the other reached through the window.

When they realised they had been spotted, they tried to flee, but the ADT officers gave chase and caught them. They were found in possession of the woman’s cellphone and her personal documents, and were handed over to the police.

“We commend the officers for their swift response,” said Andrew Burdock, ADT’s coastal district manager; outlying branches.

Burdock appealed to women drivers to be extra-careful and to take precaution to safe-

guard themselves against potential hijackings.

“If you are in your vehicle and are approached by someone suspicious, sound your hooter and drive off if possible,” he said.

“Never open your vehicle window or door for a stranger, and avoid driving through high-crime or unfamiliar areas, especially at night or when the roads are quiet.

“You should also drive in the centre lane away from pedestrians where possible and, at intersections, stop at least 5m from the car in front in case you need to make a quick getaway.”

Man robbed and shot with own gun THE police are investigating an attempted murder and armed robbery case after a 28-year-old man was shot in the arm in Daba Street, KwaZakhele, about 1.20am on Sunday.

Police spokesperson, Constable Mncedi Mbombo, said two men had overpowered him and robbed him of his firearm and shot him in the left arm with it.

A witness said both suspects had been armed. They fled after shooting the man.

The police said the man was in a stable condition in hospital. No arrests have been made. – NCEBA DLADLA

Walmer High pupils encouraged to dream big NCEBA DLADLA WALMER High School pupils got a head start to achieving their life goals when they attended the Masifunde Learner Development Week of Big Dreams Workshop last week.

“After a short break, we are back doing what we love - exercising together,” said group leader Jurmatha Majola.

She said they were practising their bowls again at the Gelvan Stadium in Gelvandale, assisted by club coach Ronald Peterson, because they had managed to raise enough money for transport, which was a serious problem for them.

The 60+ year-olds come from New Brighton, Kwazakhele, Zwide, KwaMa-gxaki and KwaDwesi.

With the encouragement of the Social Development Department, they formed a social club to talk about issues affecting the elderly and ways to solve their problems, as well as knitting and sewing and playing sport.

On Wednesdays, they go to Gelvandale for exercise because there are no grounds

available to them in their townships.

“Exercise keeps our bodies healthy. We love it, and taking part in bowling helps sharpen our minds,” Majola said. “A serious problem, however, is that we have to travel to the playing fields, the nearest being in Gelvandale.”

The club depends on donations, and Majola said the Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture and her son Gerald Majola had helped them with uniforms and equipment.

“We urge the government to make available a piece of land that we could use for sports,” group chairperson Vuyiswa Makoni said.

She also urged other gogos to come and join them, as “playing sport makes us feel young again.”

Peterson said, “I have been involved with training these women for more than three years now. They call me every time they have an opportunity to come and I make myself available. I encourage them to exercise and they love it.”

This is an annual event which Masifunde facilitates to fight against unemployment, which

is rampant in Walmer/Gqebera.

“Victory does not come without challenges,” said Mdoda, adding that one needed to be passionate and to fight for one’s dreams.

Mdoda encouraged the pupils to be innovative thinkers, with a mind to entrepreneurship, as well as to check the opportunities sport provided in South Africa.

Diniso, owner of Periwinkle Executive, a company which finds employment for house executives (domestic workers), told the pupils their backgrounds should not deter them from achieving their dreams in life. The fact that parents were unemployed or might be alcoholics should not make them think they could not achieve in life, but should instead push them to create the lives of their dreams.

“I am the child of a domestic myself. I did not limit my dreams because of that. Instead, I have achieved most of the things I wanted in life,” Diniso said.

“The pupils were highly inspired and loved to mingle with the guest speakers. They also asked questions,” Foli said.

These Walmer High School matrics are inspired and ready to start working on their goals.

Name changes to honour liberation struggle icons NCEBA DLADLA THE municipality is making progress in changing the names of institutions, geographical features, landscapes and streets associated with the apartheid past to the names of the country’s heroes and struggle icons, and those that would foster peace and reconciliation, Sports, Recreation, Arts and Culture executive director Noxolo Nqwazi said last Friday, May 8.

Nqwazi was speaking during the renaming of Seyisi Square and Road after Wilson Kayingo, KwaZakhele Swimming Pool after Champion Galela and KwaZakhele Fire Station after Jacob Sikhundla.

The role of the three liberation struggle icons was explained in detail by the likes of Thobile Mhlahlo and Bicks Ndoni, who formed the leadership of the ANC members present.

Nqwazi said the process was a government programme given credence by the Geographic Names Act, which gives local

municipalities a right to look at streets, buildings and properties that require change.

In consultation with local communities and structures, she said, such a process was being followed in the metro.

“The process of naming our geographic areas after our freedom fighters and stalwarts was inevitable. Some township streets and institutions used names of the white establishment with no bearing whatsoever on the people in that particular area,” said portfolio councillor Nomamerika Souls, adding that some names really were an insult to those communities.

“This is not the end. We’ll continue this process of transformation and social cohesion in other areas as well.”

After the renaming of the three institutions, a brief ceremony was held and family members were thanked for making their family members available to be part of the struggle for freedom and for giving permission for the facilities to be named after them.

Tearful farewell to Tofile at special council meeting LIZEKA TANDWA IT was an emotional and heartwrenching farewell as tearful municipal councillors shared their heartwarming tales of Ward 30 councillor Mike Tofile, who died Monday, May 4.

An emotional speaker of council, Maria Hermans, called a special council meeting on Thursday, May 7, and leaders from various parties relayed their fond memories of what they said was an eloquent and professional Tofile.

Hermans said she had been given the unfortunate job of telling Tofile’s sister that he had died while they were driving to the Frere Hospital in East London where he was being cared for.

Hermans said she would miss his presence in council meetings and his dedication to his work.

“You would know him when he spoke in council. He would even indicate a programme in the ANC that he was not involved with, which showed his dedication.

He was articulate and used big words which sometimes made us laugh or look in

the dictionary,” she said.

Mayor Ben Fihla said, “Comrade Tofile was a true all-round cadre of the ANC. He became active at a very tender age when it was not fashionable to join the struggle.

He struggled with the masses on the ground in order to realise the dream of a free non-racial, non-sexist, democratic and prosperous South Africa.”

Tofile died months before completing his diploma in local government law and administration at the University of Fort Hare.

Hermans said Tofile had fallen ill while attending lectures in East London.

He had been a Ward 30 councillor since 2011 and a member of the South African Civic Organisation (Sanco) for many years.

ANC councillor Loyiso Stemele, who broke down in tears during the special meeting, said Tofile had been like a father to him.

The new platform is the first of its kind in South Africa and provides easy access for school editorial teams to tell their stories to the world directly from their mobile phones and other internet-enabled devices.

Seasoned media industry professionals took the attendees through their paces while providing training on the basics of digital journalism and news writing.

Former TygerBurger news editor, Marana Brand gave teachers an overview of what the exciting world of news journalism entails on a day-to-day basis and shared some of their industry experience with delegates. The training covered every aspect of school news journalism, from business plans and layout to SEO (search en-

gine optimisation) and multimedia.

The project is Media24’s flagship educational project and aims to create a culture of citizen journalism among young South Africans. Aspiring young journalists, photographers and news-makers can try their hand at digital journalism on the advanced new soon-to-be launched WeCan24 website which enables learners to write news stories and upload photos, videos and share content to other platforms.

Through its unique teacher training model, Media24 aims to upskill the educators who head up the school editorial teams, as they go far beyond the call of duty to invest in their learners.

Defuse your chronic illness time-bomb THERE is a good chance you could be one of the growing number of South Africans at risk of developing chronic disease, unless you take charge of your health, sooner rather than later.

Dr Ali Hamdulay, general manager of Metropolitan’s health division, says adopting a healthier lifestyle is the answer, but behaviour change related to health is difficult.

Non-communicable diseases are chronic medical conditions or diseases that are non-infectious.

They are generally preceded by unhealthy behaviour or lifestyles, such as poor diet, physical inactivity and tobacco use.

The World Health Organisation estimates they account for 43% of total deaths in South Africa, with cardiovascular diseases, cancers, chronic respiratory diseases and diabetes the main culprits.

Fortunately intermediary risk factors, such as elevated blood pressure, high cholesterol or high blood glucose, offer early warning signals that a chronic disease, such as hypertension or diabetes, may evolve in the absence of appropriate behaviour change.

However, these early alerts are only detected through regular screening.

“Most people know the basics about what to do to stay healthy, but often lack

the skills and willpower to apply that knowledge when making daily choices about their health. Given the inherent difficulty in changing behaviour, a team effort is required to empower individuals in changing to healthier lifestyles that prevent non-communicable diseases,” Hamdulay says.

He says your medical scheme and its managed care company, along with your healthcare provider and employer, are some of the key players who should be working together to support and encourage you to take ownership of your health status, and enable you to change from being a passive recipient of scheme benefits and medical services to an active partner and co-producer of your own health and well-being.

“The ‘fix-me-when-I’m-sick’ attitude that prevails across our largely curative-oriented healthcare system needs to change. This requires a team effort from all players.”

Hamdulay encourages health consumers to start seeing healthcare providers, be they a GP, nurse or pharmacist, in a different light. Rather than simply the person we turn to when sick, we should think about them as skilled professionals and partners who can support us to remain healthy.

Similarly, the healthcare professionals delivering managed care services for

medical schemes have a wealth of skills, expertise and information that can be applied to help scheme members know their health status and take appropriate actions to improve it.

Hamdulay also encourages anyone who is on chronic medication or has a chronic illness to actively participate in his or her scheme’s disease management programme.

“These programmes are far more than just ensuring you have access to scheme benefits for treatment. Nowadays they focus on self-management, health education and genuinely enabling the individual to adopt behaviours that help them maintain and improve their health, and prevent complications.”

Many medical schemes offer members access to rewards programmes which incentivise healthier lifestyle choices.

Hamdulay encourages members to make active use of their schemes’ preventative care benefits, such as vaccinations and health screening.

He says if you have not already had your flu vaccination for winter, make a plan to do so today, in the light of warnings that this year’s flu season is expected to be particularly harsh. He says you should also remember to have regular health-screening tests to pick up any early signals of non-communicable disease risk. – REPORTER

Sunridge Village road race this Saturday THE ninth Sunridge Village family road race will be held at 7am this Saturday.

Organised by the Port Elizabeth Amateur Athletic Club and Sunridge Village Shopping Centre, this event promises to be the greatest to date, they said.

Last year’s event had drawn more than 2 000 competitors and had grown at a fantastic rate year on year.

This would once again be a fun-filled family affair with fantastic hampers, lucky draws and some major prizes. These included a R2 500 shopping experience from Sunridge SuperSpar, a major sponsor of the event.

“Although it is an official EPA Road Running event, it also caters for the whole family, with distances of 5km and 10km,” said Suzanne Fincham, Sunridge Village Shopping Centre manager.

“The school with the most bulk wins R1 000, so we encourage all schools to participate and support the event.”

She said other fun category prizes included First Family Home, Parent and Pram, Dad and Dog and Mom and Tot. However, there would be a restriction of one dog per entry.

Only the first 1 000 pre-entries at SpecSavers, PostNet and Myburg’s Sports at Sunridge Village Shopping Centre will receive an event T-shirt.

Other venues where pre-entries can be made are at all major sports shops in Port Elizabeth, as well as the Despatch SuperSpar and Myburg’s Sports in Uitenhage. Bulk and pre-entries close at 5pm today (May 13).

“Our aim this year is a record breaking 2500 competitors. It can be done, as this is, for the first time, an official EPA league event and one of the biggest events in the Metro,” said Shane Brown, chairman of the organising committee.

Festivities kick off at 5pm on Friday with preregistration at Sunridge Village Shopping Centre.

Takeaways, restaurants and selected stores are open for a bite, or something to drink or buy until late.

Various stores at the centre will man the water points, with a watering hole for pets at the first water point. Prize-giving will take place directly after the race in the area adjacent to the Keg & Swan.

Prize money for various age categories is up for grabs, as well as a gold, silver or bronze medal for all participants who finish before the cutoff time. Lucky draw prizes are attendance prizes, so competitors should stay after the run for the prize-giving.

Soccer legends join fight against xenophobia NCEBA DLADLA FOOTBALL legends Lucas “Rhoo” Radebe of South Africa and Emmanuel “Tico Tico” Bucuane of Mozambique were in Nelson Mandela Bay at the weekend in support of the war against xenophobia.

“We are here to tell South Africans they must say no to xenophobia. We are Africans and should be proudly African,” former Kaizer Chiefs and Leeds United captain Radebe said in between taking photographs with fans at the Ke Nako Mall on Friday afternoon.

Radebe said he had played overseas and had never been discriminated against because he was a foreigner. He said he knew South Africans were a loving nation who would do anything to stop xenophobia wherever it reared its ugly head.

Radebe urged soccer fans and sports lovers in general to isolate those few individuals who want to take South Africa backwards.

“I spent 14 years of my football life in South Africa. This has been my home away from

home,” said Bucuane, who plied his trade for Jomo Cosmos and Supersport United during his stay in the country.

The retired Bucuane, who is back in Mozambique where he runs a football academy, said he had been shocked by the recent xenophobic attacks and that this was unlike South Africa.

The two, who still command much respect in football circles, were part of the #ProudlyAfrican Trophy Tour to Nelson Mandela Bay. They were showcasing the Absa Premiership trophy ahead of the final league match between the visitors, the mighty Kaizer Chiefs, and hosts Chippa United at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Saturday.

Chiefs beat The Chilli Boys (Chippa United) 2-0, taking their tally to a record 69 points on the log, compared with last season’s winners, Mamelodi Sundowns, who reached 65 points.

Absa Premiership League title winners Amakhosi were crowned after the match and issued with their R10-million prize money for winning the league.

Siyaphambili Primary through to regionals SELBY MADIKANE SIYPAHAMBILI Primary School won the SASFA Motherwell Danone Nations Cup u/12 eliminations when they overcame Imbasa Primary School at Enkwenkwezini Primary School grounds on Wednesday.

The other schools that participated in the Motherwell Zone eliminations were Redhouse, Dumani, Enqileni, Khwezelihle, Zanoxolo, Elundini, Fumisukoma and Mpumalanga.

The teams were divided into two groups and the tournament started with a round robin, with the two top teams in each

groups booking themselves a place in the semi-finals.

Imbasa defeated Dumani 2-1 on penalties after their 1-1 full-time score in the semi-finals, while Mpumalanga lost 3-2 to Siyaphambili after their full-time goalless draw.

In the finals, Siyaphambili registered a quick goal in the first five minutes of the game.

Imbasa kept on trying but their two efforts hit the woodwork with the goalkeeper beaten.

Siyaphambili will join other zone winners in the Sasfa Nelson Mandela Bay regional eliminations.

SWARKOPSVALLEY United Brothers (Subs) FC produced an excellent 1-0 win over Kokstad Liverpool in their ABC Motsepe League match at the Motherwell NU 2 Stadium on Friday.

The visitors looked comfortable when they had the ball and the home side did not seem likely to register a goal, although they were giving a good account of themselves. Then new Subs head coach Garth Dickinson introduced Mayenzeke Yesko Sokunentsa midway into the second half and Sokunentsa, who is a brave hardworking midfielder, changed the complexion of the game.

Subs kept knocking on Liverpool’s door and in the last three minutes of the game, Subs striker Vuyisani Mbesuma Masumpa scored the long-awaited goal.

Liverpool goalkeeper Thabiso Magubane was red-carded for telling the referee the goal had been scored from an offside position.

A LOT will be at stake when Young Idols and United Brothers clash in the titanic Peefa VW Tiguan Knockout finals at the KwaDwesi grounds on Saturday.

HE NEDBANK Cup final between Mamelodi Sundowns and Ajax Cape Town at Nelson Mandela Bay stadium this Saturday will provide entertainment galore for not only football fans, but the whole family, said Premier Soccer League (PSL) Head of Stakeholder Relations and Communications, Connie Motshumi.

Music will be provided by the likes of Zahara, KO and Casper Nyovest.

“We urge soccer lovers to come in droves. Tickets ranging from R40 to R80 and R10 for children are still available at Computicket, Shoprite/Checkers” said Motshumi.

Gates open at 11am. Kickoff is at 3pm.

IMBABALA Young Stars vanquished their hoodoo team, Young Callies, 9-0 in their Nodefa VW Community Trust Premier League clash at Jabavu Stadium in KwaNobuhle on Thursday night.

Imbabala decided to go for a total onslaught against the side which had always defeated them.

It was a huge embarrassment to Callies supporters when they saw their team losing by a huge score to the side they did not respect.

Manchester United shared the spoils 2-2 with Highland Spurs. Jamaican Stars hammered Kubs 6-0.

City Style played to a 2-2 draw with Really Rangers. Black Aces won the Angola Derby 1-0 when they took on Temptations. Stokes United were humiliated 3-0 by City Friends.

REAL Strikers snatched an all-important 1-1 draw in their game against Manchester FC in their Mofa Build It Premier League game at the Motherwell NU 9 Stadium on Sunday.

Strikers, who started the season on a low note, have shown some signs of improvement of late. Manchester FC midfielder Lucas “Rhoo” Mgushe scored the opening goal in the first half. Strikers replied late in the second half when Mpumelelo Boltina bagged their goal. Manchester FC had many easy chances, but their strikers were harmless in front of the goals.

Crystal Palace played to a 3-3 draw with Manchester United and Highland Spurs drew 4-4 with Milan Stars. The beleaguered Young Tigers went down 4-2 to Swartkopsvalley United Brothers (Subs).

Community builder Zodwa Plaatjie honoured SELBY MADIKANE MOTHERWELL’S Zodwa Plaatjie was among those honoured for community service by the Golden Key International Honour Society’s Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University chapter in the annual new recognition ceremony on Tuesday last week.

Plaatjie, Professor Andrew Leitch, NMMU’s deputy vice-chancellor of research and engagement, Sbu Shabalala, a founder of a black-owned IT company and Dr Amber Cristal Anderson, a human resources executive for Coca Cola Fortune, were each honoured with a Golden Key International Honour Society Award, which included a certificate, brochure and cutlery set.

The function was held to honour community members who dedicate their time to uplifting the standard of living of the poorest of the poor.

Plaatjie, an unemployed married woman, is the founder of the Sihlangule Soup Kitchen, which she started in a shack at NU 30 on May 17, 2005. She was also a finalist in the Eastern Cape Community Builder of the Year in 2008.

Sis Zodwa, as she is affectionately known, made another remarkable change in Motherwell NU 12 when she opened the Lukhanyiso Pre-school in June, 2009.

When conducting home visits, Plaatjie saw

the need for a pre-school where the young children would be safe instead of wandering the streets.

The pre-school operated in a two-roomed shack at the back of Plaatjie’s house for two years. In August, 2013, Plaatjie was afforded the opportunity to share her community involvement with the listeners of Umhlobo Wenene FM. Also in 2013, one of her volunteers, Sanda Ncamani, whom Plaatjie praised as one of her best workers, spoke on the SABC about their community involvement projects. This year, Plaatjie got a shot in the arm when Breadline Africa donated modified containers with a kitchen, classroom and toilets after they recognised her tireless efforts to improve the lives of the defenceless and less fortunate members of the community.

Umhlobo Wenene FM and the St Albans and George Correctional Services donated blankets and food to the Lukhanyiso Preschool last year.

Sis Zodwa, who has to dig deep into her pockets to keep her soup kitchen a service centre of the needy community, urges members of the community to come to the rescue of those who have nothing.

Every Tuesday from noon, elderly citizens get soup from the Sihlangule Kitchen.
