Family devastated by boxer’s sudden death

HE puzzling death last week of former KwaNobuhle professional boxer, Khuselekie Gada, has left his family devastated.

They have ‘Acres of Talent’

Gada, 34, a straw-weight boxer who dedicated his time to training young boxers in the township, collapsed while hitting a punching bag at the gym early last week.

His asthmatic mother, Stella Gada, 76, collapsed on hearing the news and was admitted to the Cuyler Hospital in Uitenhage on Monday afternoon.

She asked the former boxer’s older sister, Nokuzola Mahlahla, 57, on Friday to talk to Express Indaba as she was still feeling weak.

“My mother loved Khuselekile very much. She has not been herself since the news of his passing in this most unusual of ways. We are devastated,” a sobbing Nokuzola said.

She said Gada had been a teetotaller who loved training and especially running. He had never complained of anything. She said she had been shocked when she was given the news that her younger brother had been rushed to hospital after falling while hitting the punching bag.

“The doctors moved him to Provincial and then to Livingstone Hospital on the same night,” said Nokuzola, a school teacher, adding that at this time Gada had been vomiting profusely.

“He had to stop boxing because he suffered too many knock-out defeats, but we appreciated the fact that he was never lost to boxing.

Gada trained boxers and up to last year he was registered as a second,” Mapitiza said.

Gada’s memorial service will be held at the Jeff Masemola Hall tomorrow (Thursday) and his funeral at St Anne’s Anglican Church on Saturday after a short service at his Philani Ntsiko Street home at 9am.

They have‘Acres of Talent’ REPORTER LEVIN Plaatjies (13) of Paterson High School beat almost 200 aspiring young performers to win the first ever “Acres of Talent” competition held by the Greenacres Shopping Centre.

With his angelic voice, Levin gave the judges goosebumps and stopped shoppers in their tracks with his rendition of the Phantom of the Opera song Think of Me. The finale of the competition, in which 26 finalists participated, was held in the new food court at the centre on Saturday.

Levin won Greenacres Shopping Centre gift cards valued at R10 000. Second was singer Kelly Le Roux (13) of Pearson High School, who sang My African Dream and won R5 000 in gift cards. Hip hop dancer Lethu Mgengo (13) of Parkside Primary came third, winning gift cards to the value of R3 000.

Seyisi Primary School won R5 000 in cash for the school with the most entries.

The competition was open to any child gifted in singing, dancing or any other performance-related talent, such as the playing of musical instruments, reciting of poetry and acting.

LIZEKA TANDWA WHILE SAFA and the ANC are in agreement that Danny Jordaan does not have to resign from his job as the association’s president after his appointment as the new mayor of Nelson Mandela Bay (NMB), opposition party members say his appointment appears to be in conflict with the constitutional provisions of Safa.

The DA’s mayoral candidate for the NMB, Athol Trollip, said the ANC and Jordaan would have to overcome this hurdle as they believed that he would have to decide one way or another which role he would fulfil.

Safa spokesperson, Dominique Chimhavi, however, told News24 that Jordaan did not have to resign from his job at Safa as it was a norm globally that an association president was also employed somewhere else.

Jordaan was announced as the new executive mayor, replacing axed Mayor Ben Fihla, subject to council voting, at a press conference held by ANC general-secretary Gwede Mantashe on Monday.

Among the new appointments were Deputy Mayor Bicks Ndoni, replacing Chippa Ngcolomba, and Chief Whip Litho Suka, replacing Joy Seale.

Various opposition parties and community leaders in the Northern Areas spoke out with varied opinions of what Jordaan’s first order of business should be - with service delivery making it to the top of the list.

Trollip said Jordaan’s appointment was tantamount to shuffling the deck chairs on the Titanic because the real problem in the metro was a broken ANC administration.

“This fact is undisputed because even the ANC and the president have recognised this in the appointment of an interim task team to replace the regional ANC executive. This is also why the DA believes that this municipality is vulnerable and that it can be won from the ANC in 2016.

“Changing the face of the mayor merely treats the symptom and not the cause of the dysfunction that is making citizens of Port Elizabeth hungry for political change,” Trollip said.

UDM president Bantu Holomisa said he was more concerned that Jordaan had abandoned Safa for his new role and what it affect it would have on national football. “This is a wake-up call for the Safa body. It tells them that in future they should make sure they extricate Safa from politics and depoliticise

football,” he said.

Holomisa went on to say that Jordan had abandoned Safa in midstream without informing its members who had invested in him as the president. “Just because they dangled a carrot in front of him he has chosen this side. He must leave soccer completely and enjoy working for the ANC. He cannot run both unless he is not serious about his new appointment,” said Holomisa Mantashe, however, said Jordaan was fully capable of this undertaking and his expertise in sports and recreation would also be beneficial to the NMB. He said Jordaan would not be stepping away from his duty as Safa president, as Safa was not a full time job but a part time one equal to serving at an institution.

Mantashe denied that the ANC had made their appointments based on their plight about winning the Uitenhage and the Northern Areas votes, with local elections next year, but said the party was determined to win those votes and the white votes in the region.

Mantashe said the Provincial Executive Committee (PEC) had engaged with relevant structures and a review of the mayoral committee would soon take place.

“The mayoral committee must be changed, with our driving force not the elections but service delivery ... What needs to be done has been done for now to ensure the health of the ANC,” said Mantashe.

Ndoni said he and Jordaan would be meeting today to discuss developments in the reports of the task team.

The task team comprises several high-profile ANC cadres and was appointed after the disbandment of the ANC regional structure in December.

Admitting his appointment was a huge undertaking following reports of infighting within the regional ANC branch of the metro, Ndoni said they had been given a clear mandate to fix the infighting and pettiness among the ANC council members. “We have no space for fighting. Councillors will be put into order. The running of this metro must be a collective operation and we will not tolerate any pettiness in the administration,” said Ndoni.

EFF regional deputy chairman, Elijah “Bo” Madwara, said the black causus which includes local EFF, PAC, UDF, COPE and United Front leaders would be meeting on Friday to discuss the state of the metro and its leaders.

Boost for early childhood education in Eastern Cape EARLY childhood education in the Eastern Cape received a much-needed boost when The Unlimited Child partnered with locally based Early Inspiration to provide training and educational toys to 13 crèches in Port Elizabeth’s Walmer Township.

The immense lack of early childhood education throughout South Africa has always been a pressing concern and was the reason for establishing The Unlimited Child.

Steph Bester, chairman of The Unlimited Child, said serious intervention was needed to put the spotlight on the massive socio-economic impact this could have for future generations. The Unlimited Child was helping to create a future for tens of thousands of children by laying a solid foundation before they reached the age of seven. At the same time, crèche caregivers were trained to maximise the use of the educational toys and to create stimulating learning environments.

“The state of early childhood education in South Africa is shocking and it’s estimated that there are more than six million preschool children in this country, who receive little or no proper stimulation. This will directly affect their motor skills and cognitive and emotional development, and the lack of stimulation makes these children extremely vulnerable,” Bester said.

Easily replicated, The Unlimited Child initiative focuses on a structured programme for preschool children as well as the training

needs of their caregivers. Since its establishment in 2008, The Unlimited Child has already successfully reached 615 crèches and 65 000 pre-school children. It has also provided training to more than 1 900 caregivers.

“We have seen that this project is a rapidimpact initiative and its effect is felt within weeks of a community being ‘touched.’ We will continue to expand our footprint in the rest of the country to realise our aim of reaching 20 000 crèches nationally by 2020.

“In order to achieve our goal, we partner with organisations such as Early Inspiration that are already active in specific areas. By working with partners that are passionate advocates for early childhood education, The Unlimited Child is aiming to create a sustainable approach to solving some of the challenges in this sector,” Bester said.

The Unlimited Child approached Early Inspiration to identify crèches it was already involved with and which specifically catered for three- and four-year-olds in the Walmer area. Following a successful training programme, certificates and educational toys were issued to the respective caregivers and supervisors.

For Dr Lauren Stretch, the founder and director of Early Inspiration, early childhood development has always been a passion.

“Through my studies, I realised the importance of early stimulation and intervention.

“All children are undergoing pre-assessments and monitoring will take place throughout the year, followed by a post assessment group which will reflect the impact achieved by The Unlimited Child in classrooms in Walmer Township. We are pleased

with the scale and progress of the intervention. It is important that we are first comfortable with current interventions before scaling up. Maintaining quality is a key focus for The Unlimited Child and Early Inspiration and this needs to be a priority before we can look at any further expansion,” Stretch said.

shop fitters worked feverishly this past weeked to add the finishing touches to the biggest and most eagerly anticipated shopping and entertainment complex in the Eastern Cape, the R1.7-billion Baywest Mall in Port Elizabeth’s western suburbs.

The mall, constructed in a record 24 months, opens its doors to the public at 10am tomorrow (Thursday), shortly after a VIP ceremony during which Eastern Cape Premier Phumulo Masualle will cut a ceremonial ribbon indicating the start of the mall’s operation.

At 10am sharp, ribbons spanning the mall’s eight entrances over its two levels will be simultaneously cut to allow shoppers to enjoy Baywest Mall and the grand opening festivities planned for the rest of the week.

According to Baywest Mall GM, Sonja de Necker, the mall had prioritised shopper safety, as well as ease of access for shoppers with cars and those using public transport.

Security breaches at shopping malls around the country have put a sharp focus on mall security, while in Nelson Mandela Bay commuters have bemoaned the lack of proper public transport facilities at major malls.

“Baywest Mall has a dedicated public transport drop-off and pick-up point, which we have tailored to meet commuters’ needs,” said De Necker.

“Not only is this facility at the doorstep of the mall, meaning commuters won’t have to walk far, but it is roofed and offers a muchneeded canteen and ablution facilities for drivers.”

While there were eight easy access points to the double-storey mall’s safe and secure parking facilities, the special public transport access point had been incorporated at ground level, leading to the roofed drop-off and pick-up point, said De Necker.

While the public transport drop-off and pick-up point would be operational from tomorrow, the facilities would be completed towards the end of June, she said.

Leading to the mall, the R300-million Baywest road network not only links shoppers conveniently to Baywest Mall via the N2 freeway and Walker Drive in Sherwood, but also links Sherwood to the N2, alleviating traffic congestion in the western suburbs.

Baywest Mall also boasted high-tech security, De Necker added.

“We have prioritised shopper security,” she said, adding that 230 state-of-the-art CCTV cameras with facial and number plate recognition software were placed strategically throughout the mall and the parking area which surrounds the mall on both floors.

“The entire access to the mall is controlled with security booms. We have also trained up our security team and will have guards patrolling the mall and the parking area constantly. They will be on foot, on bicycles, quad bikes and in patrol vehicles,” said De Necker. All the stores would also be fitted with panic buttons, she said.

To further ensure shopper safety, De Necker said, hoodies and caps would not be permitted inside the new mall.

“Research shows that security breaches at malls occur mostly at the hands of suspects who hide their faces with caps or hoodies.

We will be asking our patrons to remove their hoodies, and if they are wearing caps, either to take them off or wear them back-tofront, so their faces are easily visible to our security cameras.”

Another safety element employed is that of controlled parking, and deploying specially trained security personnel rather than car guards. There was an incremental parking rate for this, said De Necker, to ensure those accessing the parking were there to visit the mall and to eliminate the need for car guards as the security personnel will be patrolling the car park. Parking for the first hour is free.

Senior citizens benefit from lesson in love

CHUBEKILE High School matrics put their life orientation teaching into practice when they visited the nearby Ekuphumleni Old Age Home to give love to the senior citizens there.

Life orientation teacher Thobeka Hoyi, who facilitated the trip, said 96 matriculants had visited the home in Zwide and spoiled about 60 gogos and mkhulus with gift packs as part of their social responsibilities.

The elderly people were surprised when Hoyi, Grade 12 accounting teacher Yolisa Mphahlaza and school secretary Nomvuyo Thole entered their dining hall with gifts of love.

“We were doing a lesson on social and environmental responsibility, where I stressed

the importance of humanity and taking care of those who were less fortunate in society, especially the most vulnerable. The pupils themselves thought of being practical and the idea of visiting the old-age home like the Magi of the Bible came about,” said Hoyi.

She said the pupils had given the residents packs containing toiletries and goodies like sweets and chocolates.

Zizipho Sobekwa introduced her fellow matrics, telling the grandmothers and grandfathers that they were special and that in all they were doing they should not forget that their grandchildren loved them.

“The elderly citizens were overjoyed. On behalf of the senior citizens, tata Milton Nopote thanked Chubekile High School members of staff and the matrics for thinking about them,” Hoyi said.

Community radio station Inkqubela FM staffers celebrated the station’s 11th birthday in style at the OR Tambo Community Centre in Zwide. Tuned in at 97.0 and known as KQFM by its myriad of fans, the station with the human touch is growing by leaps and bounds. Formal celebrations started on Friday and on Saturday they had a joint gospel concert with the Presbyterian Church of Africa - CD Kwatsha Memorial at the Nangoza Jebe Great Hall.

Reach for a Dream makes dreams come true REPORTER REACH for a Dream Port Elizabeth has once again put a smile on the faces of children suffering from life-threatening diseases.

Zanoxolo, a 13-year-old boy who has VSD (a heart condition), fulfilled his dream of being a cardiologist for a day at the Dora Nginza Hospital.

Dr Nxele welcomed him to the team and helped him into the appropriate doctor’s apparel. He then familiarised Zanoxolo with a few cases. During the hospital rounds, Zonoxolo had to report to Dr Pepeta, who is his role model.

Dr Pepeta helped to diagnose Zonoxolo and is the reason he would like to become a cardiologist one day.

Reach for a Dream also arranged for Diego Jonas (16) to be picked up from the Livingstone Hospital by his favourite car - a white BMW. “One day I’m going to buy one like this,” said a very excited Jonas.

He was then taken to Greenacres Shopping Centre for the day and received his dream gift, a Sony touch-screen phone. “Wow, I cannot believe this!” he said after receiving his gift. Jonas suffers from osteosarcoma.

PE College students on show at Dash Night Club INDABA REPORTER IT is on and it is here, the “Beats, Bars and Melodies Show”, featuring Port Elizabeth College students and headlined by local hip hop artist Azz Veritazz at Dash Night Club, Central, this Friday (May 22) starting at 3pm.

The show will be a diverse rendition of hip hop, rap, soul, ballad and pop.

Azz Veritazz, a recorded artist, said they were hoping to give especially students in the area a good start to the weekend.

Zwifa president, Mzikayise Chippa Quntu, highlighted that the previous season had been characterised by some challenges, which they had overcome.

He applauded the Safa Nelson Mandela Bay executive committee, the teams, fans, match officials and his executive for dedicating their time to the benefit of Zwifa. “It was not an easy road, but the support we received from our role players was quite phenomenal,” he said.

Linda grooms budding netball stars NCEBA DLADLA THIRTEEN Port Elizabeth township primary schools are learning netball skills thanks to Linda Odolo-Msila, 28, a former Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University netball player and coach.

A level-two South African netball coach, Linda runs a netball academy, “Hope for Kids”, which benefits pupils at disadvantaged schools around Port Elizabeth.

At the Esitiyeni Primary School in Zwide during league matches played last Wednesday, Linda said, “I’ve been running Hope for Kids for almost three years now. I started with five schools, but now there are 13.”

Walmer resident Linda said the project looked after u/9, u/11 and u/13 divisions in schools, which had up to 90 enthusiastic pupils participating.

“I started playing netball at primary school before playing for PE College and later NMMU,” she said.

She took all the players to the Lilian Ngoyi Sports Centre in Kwazakhele for trials recently and chose the best and most

dedicated of them in each age group to add into her Summerstrand-based academy.

She said she intended to sharpen their skills and ensure that they were a group of elite players who would take the sport up to the national level - where they could represent the country against international opposition.

Linda, who is assisted by Luvuyo Msila, Thembalethu Vena and Nontobelo Matyu in umpiring and keeping log sheets during games, referred to herself as a township netball developer.

She bought the equipment that enabled the pupils to play and took the time to teach interested teachers the intricacies of the game, including the training methods, rules and regulations before starting the league fixtures.

“We put infrastructure in schools where there was none,” said Linda, adding that in that aspect some members of the Department of Education and school principals had assisted.

“I don’t get paid to do this. This is my passion and contribution to community development,” a proud Linda said.
