Ndoni was speaking at the two-day workshop for contractors of the Municipality where the minister of Human Settlements Lindiwe Sisulu was scheduled to attend to address SMMEs but was a no-show.

Addressing the 400 SMMEs in attendance, Ndoni said it was a well-known fact that in the city you get an RDP house by paying a bribe.

“IamnottoosurewhatthegoingrateforanRDP house is but it is simply scandalous that we subject our people who have trusted us to this behaviour.”

Ndoni said shoddy workmanship by contractors meant that a rectification of built houses was required almost as a matter of cost. “I cannot understand why government has to pay twice to get one house built. Housing officials are indifferent and unresponsive to the community’s complaints and issues. We have a challenge of having to go back to some houses and repair; we must agree with contractors that we cannot do that again.

“The person that needs to be prioritized needs to be the beneficiary. We must ensure we avoid making our people angry; let’s not subject our people to the humiliation of paying bribes to get anything done,” said Ndoni.

Ndoni said contractors and the Housing Development Agency (HDA) should cooperate with forensic investigators to report and expose corrupt elements within human settlements’ value chain.

He said government should also put in place pro-

grammes to improve the state of black contractors.

“They cannot remain small and emerging for the rest of their lives; at some point you must emerge.”

The workshop was intended for Sisulu also to sign a service level agreement with the MEC for Human Settlements Helen Sauls-August and Mayor Danny Jordaan in a bid to fast-track housing delivery in the region. All three though, did not attend.

Municipal Human Settlements boss, Lindile Petuna, said key problems in his directorate’s roster system were contractors being allocated work but did not start building houses owing to lack of funds.

“It is important to note that there have been complaints in relation to that, especially allocation of work.

“Once we allocate work, we note some contractors are unable to start work because they are unable to raise funds.

“Communities are asking ‘when are you going to start?’ But contractors are unable to start; this affects service delivery.”

Petuna said the metro’s housing revolving fund waswayabovewhatthelimitshouldbe.“Thelimit currently should be R100 million but we are approaching R200 million and this means we depend on province to provide funding.”

Petuna however said flexibility is an advantage within their roster system as contractors are able to allocate work regularly and more women were also becoming contractors.

“There is a lot of work that needs to be done in terms of our backlog of our sector plan. We estimate that by 2030 we will need to have constructed 140 000 units with the metro.

“Whether that is possible or not is something that we need to debate further,” said Ndoni.

Human Settlements Acting Director-General Mbulelo Tshangana said the support package approved by Cabinet in April was not an intervention in the affairs of the municipality.

Tshangana said the first day of the workshops ended a little before 8pm after contractors and officials took resolutions. “This shows a dedication and passion to build a programme for contractors.We took some resolutions yesterday and this will culminate in a social con-

tract. The intention is to hold each other accountable, if any of those things we have committed to do are not done.”

Tshangana said some of the resolutions were 90% of contracts to go to the Metro’s roster system; provide training and explanations of the grading and rating systems; fix the roster system; and the SMMEs struggling to procure material supply will be assisted. He said these resolutions would still need to be operationalised.

National Home Builders Registration Council (NHBRC) CEO, Mongezi Mnyani said in order to ensure that no rectifications were needed in future, they would conduct a training pro-

gramme for contractors and they would also come up with various programmes to assist contractors. “What we have seen is that some of the contractors have no skills, which affects quality on the ground. In the next 6 months we will be implementing a detailed programme and we hope those skills will be translated into practical work on the ground,” he said.

Mnyani said they would also ensure that houses that are built would be enrolled with NHBRC which means if there were any structural defects they would fix the house at no cost to the consumer. “Most of these houses were never enrolled with us and were never covered

in terms of the warranty funds. We will also have inspectors who will assist contractors,” said Mnyani. He said there were still houses being rectified by HDA and they were busy assessing more houses to ensure those houses were corrected.

President of the Metro Black Contractors, Baba Ningi said there would no longer be invasions. “We are thinking we won’t toyi-toyi anymore, because the people all wanted one term for all these years. We have it now. National and the HDA are speaking to us and the current officials are able to interpret the tender system for us. We are very happy.”

No botched circumcisions in the Bay NCEBA DLADLA WHILE some districts in the Eastern Cape have already recorded deaths as a result of botched circumcision, the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Municipality has recorded none for the past five years.

According to media reports, the Winter initiation season had a bad start with seven initiates hospitalised in the Tsolo and Qumbu regions.

“Some boys even lose their manhood in the

course of undergoing this age-old tradition of circumcision,” said Eastern Cape Circumcision Senior Manager Dr Luvuyo Bayeni.

Bayeni, originally from KwaNobuhle in Uitenhage, believes his appointment by the Department of Health to the position in 2010 has been a catalyst for change in the tradition that could otherwise be losing its meaning.

Bayeni has been visiting hospitals in the area of Mthatha, Qumbu, Lusikisiki, and Mount Frere to treat victims of botched circumcisions.

In Nelson Mandela Bay initiation has not

had the same dire results.

“We,have not been affected by any loss of life in the bush or seeing our boys going to hospitals for many years now,” Nelson Mandela Bay Mayoral Committee Fikile Desi told Express.

According to Desi, the Nelson Mandela Bay Circumcision Forum - which he chairs - has been very effective.

The forum, he explained, is made up of him as representing government, traditional leaders, traditional health practitioners that include iingcibi (traditional Surgeons), ama-

khakhatha (traditional nurses) from amaXhosa, abeSuthu and amaHlubi as well as Department of Health officials in the form of male nurses.

“In the metro we have some chiefs who are coming out to claim their space in the traditional chieftaincy.

“What we do is to engage them in our processes and as we speak they understand what we are doing,” said Desi, adding that they also used local structures and local clinics to communicate messages that helped families understand the rite of passage.

Ex-boyfriend sought in connection with missing child NCEBA DLADLA MEMBERS of the Police’s Family, Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit (FCS) in Algoa Park have asked the community to help them find a three-year-old girl.

Little Roxanne Unathi Stuurman was last seen on Wednesday June 10 when she accompanied Lubabalo Galela to the Kenako Mall.

Galela (29), from Zwide is an ex-boyfriend of Unathi’s mother Portia Stuurman.

According to Port Elizabeth police spokesperson Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg, Stuurman (29) from Missionvale panicked when Galela didn’t return her child at the agreed time. She started to phone Galela but his phone was off.

“Sometime later,” Janse van Rensburg said, “Galela phoned Portia and promised to bring the child back home.” But he never did!

“Lubabalo (Galela) is my ex-boyfriend.

We are no longer together but he has been coming here to beg me to accept him back.

I told him I don’t want to. So, that day he asked to take the child to the Mall. I consent-

Police have been to Galela’s home and work address to no avail. “Since the child went missing, his whereabouts are unknown,” said Stuurman.

Little Unathi went missing just three days after the end of the annual observance of Child Protection Week.

According to the website Missing Children South Africa, 1 460 children go missing in South Africa every day. While more than three quarters of missing children are found, around 23% disappear without a trace.

“I am spending sleepless nights. If Lubabalo wants to spite me, it’s working. Please help me get my child back,” sobbed Stuurman.

Police warn residents against police mbombays (fake police) NCEBA DLADLA FOUR armed robbery suspects, two of them in police uniform entered a house in Handel Crescent, Heuwelkruin in Despatch around 6:10pm on Saturday and pretended to be police.

They gained entry by saying they were police members making enquiries about the home owner.

“But when they were allowed into the house, two of the suspects drew firearms and demanded money from the owner,” said po-

lice spokesperson Sergeant Majola Nkohli.

“One of the suspects slashed the 66-year old owner’s ear with a knife. The man and three other occupants of the house were handcuffed,” said Nkohli, adding that the suspects stole an empty safe and a valuable wedding ring before they fled in a white Corsa bakkie.

The injured man was treated at the scene, said Nkohli who warned residents against criminals masquerading as police officers.

“As police, we would like to advise the members of the public to request police identification cards before granting any access to their premises, as every police officer is ex-

pected to carry one when on duty,” said Nkohli. ) In another robbery incident police are looking for information that would lead to the arrest and conviction of two suspects wanted in connection with an incident in Kamesh last Wednesday.

The suspects entered the Ithema Mini Store at the corner of Acacia Avenue and Darter Street in Kamesh, Uitenhage and pretended to be customers.

“As they entered, one suspect produced a firearm and pointed it at the 33-year-old own-

er,” said Nkohli. The second suspect removed and undisclosed amount of cash from the till, three cellphones and airtime vouchers valued at R300.

The suspects fled the scene on foot. No shots were fired and no one was injured during the robbery.

“We urge members of the community who might know something about this incident please to come forward with information,” said Nkohli.

Detective praised for securing life imprisonment in murder trial NCEBA DLADLA A DETECTIVE from Uitenhage has been praised for his thorough work to secure a life sentence for a murder committed last year.

Warrant Officer Riaan van Tonder was singled out by Uitenhage Police Cluster

Commander Brigadier Phillip Salusakazana for his detective work after the Grahamstown High Court handed down a life sentence in the murder trial of Lukhanyo Majola (23).

Majola was convicted for the murder of Khayalethu Petani in Addo on 29 November 2014.

He had shot Petani (36) and was also convicted on charges related to the Fire Arms Control Act. “In addition to life imprisonment for murder, Majola was also sentenced to 12 years imprisonment for possession of an unlicensed firearm and a further 12 months for illegal possession of ammunition,” said

Nkohli.

The sentences will run concurrently.

According to Nkohli, Salusakazana commended Van Tonder for his solid police work and the manner in which he conducted himself while testifying in court.

“The sentence sends a strong message that crime does not pay,” Nkohli said.

Nomhle Nongogo relishes coming home to perform NCEBA DLADLA WITH a new album on the way Port Elizabeth songstress Nomhle Pearl Nongogo can hardly wait for her concert run at the Grahamstown National Arts Festival which starts next week, Thursday.

“I feel honoured, coming back home to perform. It’s quite exciting,” said Nongogo, adding that she has been amazed by the response and love she received from music lovers for her debut album, “Ikwezi”.

The album, released in 2011 landed her two South African Music Awards nominations for Best Female and Best African Adult Contemporary.

Her shows will feature music from “Ikwezi” and her new, as yet unnamed album. But the highlight for her is the opportunity to pay tribute to African music legends who have

been an inspiration in musical journey.

This include Ray Phiri, Yvonne Chaka Chaka, Letta Mbulu, Caiphus Semenya, Jabu Khanyile and the late Sisa Sopazi, a Port Elizabeth drummer and producer of “Ikwezi”.

“I relish coming home to the Eastern Cape to pay tribute to people like Sopazi who groomed me.”

In its official programme the National Arts Festival describes Nongogo as a “phenomenal musician” who became one of the country’s “most sought after backing vocalists and session musicians” before embarking on her solo career.

“I’ll be doing songs and medleys to pay tribute to those artists who played a major role in my music career. It will be the highlight of the shows,” said Nongogo.

On the Rise Production boss, Sonwabiso Nompunga, who looks after Nongogo’s business and bookings, said she would give three performances at The Vic on July 2, 4 & 5.

Walmer township youth showcase drama skills at Arts Festival NCEBA DLADLA HISTORY will be made when the Born Free Drama Group from Walmer Township performs for the first time at the Grahamstown National Arts Festival.

Their production, “The Legacy” is a 1-hour drama inspired by international icon of peace, freedom and democracy, Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela, said playwright and director Zena Bally.

Though the world’s beloved Madiba was no longer with us, his voice was still heard, according to Bally, a Rhodes University BA Drama and Philosophy Graduate.

Mandela’s life and teachings continued to inspire the youth all over the world, to aspire to greatness, she said. “The story is about a young and ambitious girl, Thandiswa who aspires to become the first black president of SA. This journey is derailed by peer pressure, her alcoholic mother and the abusive mother’s boyfriend

who makes her life hell.”

When Madiba appears to Thandiswa in a dream her life changes around.

The cast is made up of Buhle Botha, Zingisa Mbanga, Thandolwethu Nyepha and Asanda Yini.

The youth of Walmer township, like many in South Africa have to overcome mammoth obstacles to ensure a brighter future. Education still remains the tool to take them out of abject poverty and hopelessness.

The Born Free Drama Group is part of the Masifunde Learner Development Programme which uses drama as a tool to address the social ills that township youth face on a daily basis, explained Masifunde Fund-raising and Communications Head Edem Foli.

“The drama group forms part of the extra-curricular component of Masifunde Learner Development’s holistic educational programme, which serves youth from impoverished communities,” said Foli.

Kwaito Kid in wrestling showdown CARA-LEE SCHEUN AS a young boy he used to jump up and down in front of the television to copy his favourite wrestlers’ kicks.

Now Kwaito Kid, born and bred in Port Elizabeth, has his own special move, the “Super Kwaito Jamkick”. A kick that has felled many an opponent in the World Wrestling Professional (WWP) ring.

“My dream was to be like the famous American WWE-wrestler, Shawn Michaels,” said Zama Njokweni from Motherwell, who fights under the alias Kwaito Kid. “But neither I nor my parents believed I could make a career as a wrestler.”

By the end of 2004 Njokweni had completed his second year studies for a business degree, when his “obsession” with becoming a wrestler took flight again.

Then he met Mark Beale, CEO of WWP. “From the very first day I met Kwaito Kid, I could see his style suited his alias perfectly,” said Beale.

But his dream to become a successful wrestler did not happen overnight.

“I trained so hard for months, and months, but didn’t get my shot in the ring,” Njokweni said.

In 2006 he finally got a chance to show off his skills.

“Following my first match I became more widely known and I was invited to tour with WWP to London, India, Namibia and Congo. I never thought a guy like me from Motherwell would see all of these countries.”

Next month Kwaito Kid will be in action in front of his home crowd during the first ever Wrestlemonster Extravaganza in Port Elizabeth at the Nelson Mandela Bay stadium on Saturday, July 18.

WWE’s PJ Black and WWP’s Tornado and Mr Wrestling are just some of the wrestling stars who will participate in Wrestlemonster.

According to Beale, Wrestlemonster is set to become an annual event.

“This year’s show will start with a Battle Royal, where 25 wrestlers will start in the ring at the same time, and fight till just one winner is left standing.”

Kurt Darren, Matthew Mole and Ifani will also provide added entertainment on the day.

Elliot Memorial Church youth extend a helping hand NCEBA DLADLA THE Elliot Memorial Congregational Church (eRabe) Youth in KwaNobuhle, Uitenhage under Reverend Keketso Bloem have been on point in terms of celebrating the National Youth Month, said Nosipho Kate of the Youth’s Manyano.

According to Kate, among other activities this group was engaged in visiting the children of Lukhanyiso Centre, KwaShare on June 16.

“Lukhanyiso Centre is the place that looks after orphaned, abused and vulnerable children,” explained Kate, adding that this visit was as a result of serious discussions about the institution to support as part of their outreach programme.

This was the beginning of the programme the youth have decided to follow from this

year, according to Kate.

“As the youth of amaRabe, we decided to look after poor and vulnerable members in our communities. So this was the first of the many visits to follow,” said Youth’s Manyano Deputy Chairperson Vuyokazo Ndzewuza.

Ndzewuza said they felt it was not enough for the young men and women to use their energies inside the church structures whereas they knew well that there was so much need in local communities.

They gave the children items they collected from members, such as clothing including shoes, ready-made food and tinned stuff.

“It is no good for the church youth to disregard what is happening in our communities.

We have a responsibility to make the change in a service of grace, that which is led by the spirit of doing good,” she said, adding that those children needed love, food and hope of a better future.

Gajjar’s legacy of goodwill lives on REPORTER WELL known former Uitenhage businessman, the late Hemantkumar Gajjar had one wish on his deathbed: that his family continue to assist those in need.

Gajjar, who was associated with Orient Ba-

zaar, was always prepared to make donations to the Uitenhage Lions Club to support disadvantaged members of the community.

“With his recent passing away he requested us, as his family, to continue his legacy of relieving suffering in the community,” said Rikesh Gajjar, one of his sons.

Holiday tips to keep children entertained, safe FOR kids the mid-year school holiday is a welcome break, but for many parents - who have to work throughout – it is a stressful period of constantly wondering whether your child is safe.

The cold weather means that older children are often confined indoors and that boredom quickly sets in so they spend a lot of time online. Good says teaching your children to stay safe online is essential.

Here are some valuable hints and tips parents can share with their children: .Never post any personal information online – like an address, email address or mobile number. .Think carefully before posting pictures or videos of yourself. Once you’ve put a pic-

ture of yourself online most people can see it and may be able to download it. It’s not just yours anymore. .Keep your privacy settings as high as possible .Never give out your passwords .Don’t befriend people you don’t know .Don’t meet up with people you’ve met online. Your child should always tell you if an online contact they have never met suggests they meet up .Remember that not everyone online is who they say they are .Think carefully about what you say before you post something online .Respect other people’s views, even if you don’t agree with their views; there is no need to be rude .If a child sees anything online that

makes them feel uncomfortable, unsafe or worried, they should leave the website, turn off their computer and tell someone immediately.

Children and teenagers should also be cautious of shopping malls which are far busier during the holidays and a popular hang-out for older kids.

If your child is going to a movie or to meet friends, he/she needs to look after his/her belongings and to look out for each other.

“Busy malls present a prime opportunity for pickpockets. Teach your children to hold on tightly to their handbags, wallets and cell phones. they turn 18. . Add in more items to budget for such as cell phone and data bundle costs. . University – Let them take responsibility of budgeting and paying their way. Help them formulate a budget for university fees, books, rent and anything else they need to pay for.

Give them the budgeted amount and check in with them on how they are finding the challenge. Give yourself access to all the account statements so that you can counsel them about their spending.

Lulama Sambokwe, a customer of OK Grocer Uitenhage could not believe that the slip she entered into the 50/50 OK Cares competition box earned her OK shopping vouchers worth R15 000.

She was granted the opportunity of nominating a charity of her choice to receive vouchers to the same value.

Lulama nominated Charity Begins At Home, a non-profit organisation established

by Nosipho Tokwana who in return donated vouchers to Mjuleni Primary School in KwaNobuhle.

Four of the twenty national winners were from the Eastern Cape, with two from Humansdorp, one from East London and Lulama from Uitenhage.

The current OK Grocer competition will have twenty customers each winning R25 000 shopping vouchers. The competition runs until August 10th. The end-of-year OK Grocer competition will offer a Bakkie as the winning prize.

School’s out, but not winter school at NMMU REPORTER CLOSE to 900 Grade 11 and 12 learners will be exposed to the fascinating worlds of accounting, science and engineering over the June/July school holidays at Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University(NMMU).

ACCOUNTING NMMU’s Accounting winter school programme, geared towards helping Grade 11 and 12 pupils improve their marks and their chances of attending university, boasts an impressive track record.

Almost a third of the 520 pupils who attended

last year’s Grade 12 winter school successfully registered for degrees or diplomas at NMMU. An analysis comparing their June matric results with their December results has revealed that many of them shot up by as much as 30%.

This year’s week-long Accounting winter school for Grade 12s, takes place from June 29 to July 3. For Grade 11s it runs from July 7 to 9.

SCIENCE The Science Discovery Week – that will be

attended by 300 learners from 56 schools in the Eastern Cape - promises to open the eyes of Grade 11 and 12 learners to the intriguing fields of Science in a fun and informal setting.

Daily activities include visits to various Science Faculty departments where learners will participate in subject-specific experiments.

ENGINEERING The annual engineering winter school has been offered for the past 10 years and will take place from July 12 to 17.

The programme for 30 learners from 14 high schools will include visits to VWSA and Continental Tyre.

SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT A winter school project with a difference will be held off-campus by the NMMU Department of Social Development Professions and driven by social work lecturer Dr Veonna Goliath.

From Monday, June 29, to Thursday, July 2, tutors from mainly the Faculty of Education’s postgraduate programme will tutor Grade 10 and 11 learners in specific subjects at Bethvale Primary School in the Northern Areas.

The project also includes parenting workshops with the parents of learners focusing on how they can enhance a culture of learning and support in the home and a career development workshop facilitated by the Psychology Department for Grade 11 learners.

Industry experts needed at The Hope Factory REPORTER THE Hope Factory is calling on industry experts in Port Elizabeth from various fields to join and share their expertise with upcoming entrepreneurs on June 26.

They are hosting an information session for experts in the engineering, construction, telecommunications, catering, hospitality, property and manufacturing industries with five to ten years of experience, who have the desire, time and capacity to provide input into the businesses of black South Africa entrepreneurs.

“They will be part of the transformation journey towards economic growth and financial sustainability we are all trying to build as a country,” said Ashley Murray, Enterprise and Supplier Development Programme Manager.

“They will hear why it’s important for them to impart and share the knowledge they’ve gained over the years with others.

Benjamin Franklin explained it better when he said, ‘Tell me and I forget, teach me and I may remember, involve me and I learn.’ This can only be achieved through a mentorship programme.”

All of The Hope Factory entrepreneurs have a full-time mentors assigned to them, to assist them with their personal and business development.

“However, very often we would require the services of an external consultant who would provide business consulting or mentoring services specific to the entrepreneur’s area of expertise within their relevant industry,” said Murray.

This type of coaching or mentorship gives the entrepreneurs ‘real-life’ exposure to their industry and they can relate to the person teaching them.

They experience first-hand the challenges and issues relating to their specific industry.

“We believe that a service offering such as industry expertise, addresses some of the needs that entrepreneurs and small business owners require.

“Access to an industry expert could facilitate an increased understanding and technical competence in their area of operation.

“This initiative is also beneficial for the industry experts, as this will give them an opportunity to give back and add value to other people’s businesses and become part of the change we need to build a booming economy for the city, and more so for the country.

Since the launch of the industry experts’ service offering, there’s been a great success with matching entrepreneurs to experts and the feedback from both sides has been remarkable.

“We are inviting more experts in Port Elizabeth to get involved,” concludes Murray.

EC Windbreakers break their 2 year winless spell SELBY MADIKANE FOLLOWING their two year winless record, the Eastern Cape Windbreakers Basketball team finally brought smiles to the province in their emphatic 80-62 win over the Northern Cape Zebras in their Basketball National League (BNL) at Wembley in Johannesburg last Saturday.

According to the Eastern Cape side’s administrator David Gaga, EC Windbreakers had registered their first win in their first league outing. Gaga said his side showed character and determination and had made the province very proud by overcoming the formidable Zebras.

Gaga said, “Our side has been campaigning in the national for the third season. Over the past two seasons our boys could secure any win. We did not put our side under pressure

but we knew that with these players we can make a difference. Our side showed that they have the potential of stopping the top teams in the BNL.” Coach Mfundo Ngangamsha said his side showed they could be a force to be reckoned with.

Ngangamsha said, “Our side is improving quite tremendously. We are prepared to take on any side. Winning the previous game does not mean that all is done. We are still having some areas in which we should improve.

Based on the current form, our boys can make us proud.”

RAYMOND Mhlaba Sports Complex was a hive of activity when Nelson Mandela Bay Basketball Metro Super League games were played on Sunday.

Fans were entertained right from the first game to the last game. Eastern Cape Windbreakers (ECW) won all their games.

In the first game ECW defeated NMMU Madibaz 103-68. In their second game they ousted University of Fort Hare (UFH) Tigers 105-54 while in their last game they overcame NMMU Madibaz 60-48.

In the battle of the students NMMU Madibaz redeemed themselves when they handed UFH Tigers a well-deserved 64-50 drubbing According to one of the organisers David Gaga, the team from Rhodes University had some problems; as such they could not pitch up for the fixture.

FANS in their droves braved the chilly weather conditions when they watched Showvillage United Brothers FC June 16 Celebrations Tournament finals which were played at Nelson Mandela Freedom Peace Park grounds on Youth Day. The first semi-finals were decided on a penalty shootout after Showvillage were held goalless by Ikamva Movers, with the latter winning 3-2. Milan Stars advanced to the finals when they edged out Manchester FC 1-0.

It was a gruelling game when Movers beat Stars 2-0. Playing away from home, Movers seemed to be comfortable because they had more ball possession. In the late stages of the first half Movers’ skipper Luxolo Nabo scored from the penalty mark.

In the second half, Stars striker Fish Mnyamana missed some glorious opportunities.

Mbongeni Keita Yako delivered a nifty pass to Nabo who side-footed the ball into the far post to make the final score 2-0.

The game was entertaining with fans being kept on their toes. Movers received a floating trophy, R2 000 and 22 gold medals while Milan settled for R800 plus 22 silver medals.

ANC Ward 23 Councillor Sindiswa Mthimkhulu applauded Showvillage for hosting

the tournament. Showvillage coach Lukhanyo Wasa stated that he was pleased that the event was a resounding success. Wasa stated that the next June 16 tournament would be one that is different from the June 16, 2015 event.

Wasa said, “We did not have enough resources but we look forward to hosting this event next year. We will prepare ourselves to make the tournament a regional event. I want to thank all the people who supported us. The turnout has been outstanding, despite the bad weather conditions.”

The games produced some sparks with spectators coming in their droves. The future stars played their hearts out and it was clear that their mentors had made thorough preparations for the tournament.

The U/9s started with a round robin with the group leaders playing in the finals. Showvillage managed to beat Ikamva Movers FC 2-1 in the finals.

In the U/17 semi-finals Showvillage whacked Lion City 3-0 while Manchester FC

defeated Milan Stars 2-0. In the finals Manchester FC beat Showvillage 3-2 on penalties following a goalless fulltime score.

All the winning teams went home with a trophy and gold medals while the runners-up settled for silver medals.

Molly Blackburn High are Provincial Champs NCEBA DLADLA MOLLY Blackburn High School from KwaNobuhle Township in Uitenhage are the new Eastern Cape Copa Cola-Cola U-15 Champions.

Copa Coca-Cola is the South African Initiative to find, harness and develop the best U-15 team as part of SA Schools Football Association (SASFA) Soccer development.

The school that represented Nelson Mandela Bay Metro Municipality achieved the feat and the right to represent the province at the National Championships scheduled to take place in Johannesburg, Gauteng in September after beating 1-0 Guqaza Senior Secondary School from OR Tambo District Municipality at the provincial games held at Dumsey Adam Sport Grounds in Queestown on Saturday 13 June.

An elated teacher and team manager Ayanda Stuurman said the win was the result of hard work and dedication from the boys who deserve the applause.

“It is the first time that we win a provincial trophy but it was a long time coming.

We’ve got a team of dedicated young stars who put so much effort in the game,” said

Stuurman who also praised former teacher and team manager at the school, Lumkile Koliti who he said “laid the foundation for the school’s U-15 boys team to be the one to beat in the district and province.”

“We also want to give thank for he contribution made by former student Phumzile Mpushe as well as community member - a neighbour at the school, Castro Magobo who worked hard to ensure that the boys were fit, had a game plan, and followed it to the letter.”

Stuurman added that because the school was currently busy with mid-year examinations, there were no celebrations as yet, save for congratulatory messages from family and friends.

“Expect much noise and celebration when we come for the second term. The boys must be congratulated,” said Stuurman, adding that they would work much harder to ensure that they won the National Copa Cola-Cola title.

Former light-welterweight boxing champ joins BSA as promotor NCEBA DLADLA FORMER Cape light-welterweight champion Thozamile Fumbeza of New Brighton, Port Elizabeth has joined Boxing South Africa (BSA) as a boxing promoter.

The good news for the licenced professional boxers was announced by BSA Nelson Mandela Bay Service Provider Mthunzi Mapitiza.

“TNT Fumbeza Boxing Promotions has been registered and that means more fights for local boxers,” said Mapitiza, adding that with Fumbeza at the helm, he had five boxing promoters who were registered to organise fights and make sure that local pugilists develop their game.

Those include Sibongile Nkebe of Silindokuhle Boxing Promotions (BP), Mbulelo Mfama of Nyusa BP, Gladys “Noforty” Tsenene of Rainbow (BP) and the newly licenced former ring official Noni Fukutwa who heads Fukutwa Promotions.

Mapitiza believes the fact that Fumbeza is a former boxer will benefit the sport because he knows about the intricacies of the game.

According to Mapitiza, the metro was assured of at least five boxing tournaments per year with five promotors registered.

He said he could not believe that people would pay R2 000 registration fee to BSA and then not use their companies - as though they were donating the cash to BSA coffers.

“This has always been my wish - to give back something to the sport. I wanted to start either a local boxing club or a boxing consortium,” said Fumbeza, adding that this promotions company was the first step towards his main aim of putting a hand up in the development of the sport he participated in for more than 20 years.

He added, “I asked my former mentor Chief Masemola to join TNT Fumbeza Boxing Promotions as a matchmaker. The rest now depends on local stables to come forward with their boxers. Then, we’ll be in business.”

In the U/15 League fans saw Major Chiefs handing Mighty Heroes a 5-1 defeat in their one-sided game.

Shining Stars shone over Morning Stars and were rewarded with a 2-0 triumph.

Everton Aces registered a comprehensive 4-1 win when they were up against Mighty Heroes. It all seemed to be falling apart for Major Chiefs who uccumbed 8-1 to Zwide Pirates.

Zwide Celtics were too strong for Morning Stars whom they hammered 3-1.

DESPITE a valiant effort, newcomers Zwide All Stars lost 2-0 to Sophakama LFC in their SAFA Nelson Mandela ABSA Ladies Regional League clash at Gal City grounds on Sunday.

Sophakama registered their first goal when Anelisa Nyobo struck a powerful rocket into the back of the net in the 15th minute.

Asanda Madobo came up with a spectacular goal that gave Sophakama a 2-0 lead in the 18th minute.

All Stars came back strongly but Sophakama’s last line of defence did their job well.

According to Sophakama Head Coach Richard Poni, his team followed his instructions.

Highbury LFC trounced African Chiefs 7-2.

The goals of Highbury were scored by Anathi Magqagala (4 goals); Nokiki Ngcwembe (a brace) and Zikhona Nogqala an odd goal.

Highbury Head Coach Knox Fasie stated that his side’s victory was attributed to hard work.

UNION RFC put on a gallant effort when they thumped Sunday Stars 22-0 during their EP Rugby Jonathan Williams League game at Isaac Wolfson on Saturday.

Stars launched the first attack on their neighbours who were highly confident.

Union’s ever shining eighth man Lwandile Siya Charlie scored the first try that

separated the sides.

Charlie scored his second try which was converted by Zolani Champ Mati to give Union a 12-0 lead.

Stars utility player Ndoda Silomntu fought like a wounded lion but he was stopped by the forwards.

Union which are popularly known as Whites increased their lead to 17-0 when their scrumhalf Thengo Gqomose scored his first try. Whites’ last try, that was scored by scrumhalf Bathandwa Matrose, sealed the game at 22-0.

Stars’ players Ayabulela Mdzoyi, Lwazi Senti and Silomntu had a storming rugby game while Charlie, Sanele Dumse, Matrose and Gqomose were the most influential players in their team’s success.
