Mother and four children die in blaze Not even 50 people were enough to save five people from the flames of their burning house in Kwanobuhle.

The house in the backyard of Isaac Sibidla (50) in erupted in flames at about 8pm on Sunday night.

It quickly spread and shot high towers of flames into the night making it impossible to save the occupants of the rental home.

According to Mtombeni, the area was experiencing load-shedding when Mjoli’s tenants who rented flats at the back of the house were woken up by the fire.

“The tenants tried to put out the fire to no avail,” said Mtombeni, adding that they called the police and fire brigade who found his aunt already burnt to ashes and her boyfriend injured, but still alive.

A woman (40) and her four children, which include a six-month-old baby, were apparently charred beyond recognition in the house.

“The father and one of his daughters (15) managed to get out of the flames alive,” said Sibidla, from whom the family of seven has been renting the house since 2013.

According to Sibidla a neighbour came beating on his door to warn him against the flames in his tenants’ house.

“I felt dizzy when I walked out. The flames were higher than my home’s roof.

About 50 people turned up to try and extinguish the flames with buckets of water.”

Community members attempted in vain to tackle the flames to save the rest of the family. “The flames were very strong, no one could get closer than a metre without burning,” said Sibidla.

According to Lindi Qukubana, a ward councillor, she is very traumatized.

“No one deserves to see your family burn to death. It must be terrible to feel so powerless.”

said he woken up by his daughter.

“I don’t know what caused the fire and how it erupted. I was sleeping when my child woke me and I ran out with the child out of our home for protection. By that time it was impossible for us to gather anything or anyone.

“I am still in disbelief and I cannot say in words how shocked and saddened we are as a family. As a man you have to be strong for the family but I am hurting, it hurts,” Jack said.

He got out of the blaze with just his t-shirt and shorts and the family is now asking for any assistance to repair what’s left of their lives.

“I don’t know what I will do. We have been trying to get documents in order and spoke to the police for most of the day. I expect that we can only make funeral arrangements next week when the family has discussed everything. It’s a very traumatic time for us.”

No outages for Kragga Kamma substation until 2016 LIZEKA TANDWA RESIDENTS who receive power via the Kragga Kamma substation can breathe a sigh of relief as load-shedding is not on the horison here anytime soon.

“This is due to the switch gear and transformer capability of that network,” explained Director of Metro Communications Roland Williams.

Residents in areas which include Sunridge Park, Fernglen, Cotswold, Westering, Framesby, Linton Grange, Kabega, Taybank, Morningside and Vikingvale can expect to escape load-shedding until the “latter part of the 2015/ ’16 financial year,” explained Marthie Nel, Acting Communications Director.

Nel said, “With the advent of the load shedding programme in late 2014, the decision not to shed the Kragga Kamma loads was partly taken on the basis that the substation is now fed only by means of one transformer, which places a high risk on the integrity of the substation.”

Nel added that transformers cost approximately R12 million each and the Infrastructure and Engineering directorate does not carry spare transformers of this magnitude in its fleet or any spares for the older type of transformers.

“The fault occurred at the Kragga Kamma substation on October 6 when the 66kV bushings on transformer No 2 failed, which rendered the transformer in-operational. New bushings had to be ordered and manufactured for the transformer, since these types of spares, in particular for older transformers, are not readily available. The Kragga Kamma substation operates on two similar transformers, with one transformer being able to sufficiently carry the load of the areas fed by the substation,” said Nel. Williams said once the repair, recapitalisation and upgrade of the substation was complete “all residents could look forward to being part of the revised load-shedding process,” said Nel. DA spokesperson for Infrastructure and Engineering, Jonathan Lawack said he was appalled by the news that certain parts around the substation were exempt from load-shedding.

“We have not been told about it. This is unacceptable and unfair to the people who are subjected to load-shedding. It’s one thing if it is an area that includes a hospital for instance, that area may not be able to be switched off because you can’t switch off a hospital, but for you to have areas which have no load-shedding without any explanation save that it will be rectified later is unfair. If this is true, I will

demand an explanation,” said Lawack.

Meanwhile Williams explained that while some parts of the city were enjoying uninterrupted power supply the now almost daily occurrence of load-shedding was placing enormous strain on the rest of the power infrastructure.

“Like a jet engine on an aircraft that is designed to run continuously to be at its most efficient, operating the distribution networks are the same. Constant interruption to the supply place stress on switch gear transformers and cables. This is due to the natural increase in loads and the loss of diversity when power is switched off for extended periods.”

Nel said new switchgear for both the 6,6 and 22kV switch panels have been ordered and delivered. “It is the intention to install these two switch panels in the second quarter of 2016.

Following the installation of switchgear at our Brickmakerskloof substation, which has already commenced.”

Nel said delays in undertaking this work at Kragga Kamma substation were due to the fact that the directorate had purchased two containerized switch panels which will be used as an alternate method of supplying the outgoing circuits while the replacement of the switchgear commences so as to prevent unnecessary outages to consumers. “These are presently being utilised for the Brickmakerskloof sub-

station refurbishment program. The costs for the purchasing and the installation of the switchgear at the Kragga Kamma substation is R10 761 829 and R2 400 000 respectively,” ended Nel. Nelson Mandela Bay Business Chamber CEO Kevin Hustler said a lot of the substation switch gear in the Metro is aged in excess of 30 years and business was severely impacted through disruptions in power supply. “We have worked tireless with the municipality, in particular the Department of Energy and Electricity to identify and prioritise these refurbishments and do the upgrades of the substations.

“Maintenance funding for infrastructure upgrades must be allocated to replace faulty infrastructure as the need arises. We have, on behalf of business and citizens in the Nelson Mandela Bay, lobbied extensively for the substations to be prioritized as a matter of urgency. Our pleas have been heard and built into the Budget and Integrated Development Plan of the city,” Hustler added.

Hustler said they emphatically believe much greater funding with regards to the distribution networks and facilities in Nelson Mandela Bay region are needed and called on the municipality to seek external funding to support maintenance and refurbishment programmes.

845 schools waiting for furniture ALVENÉ DU PLESSIS LEARNERS at the Chubikile Senior Secondary school in Zwide again had to again write their examinations kneeling.

Halfway through the school year this school is still waiting for furniture which supposedly would have been provided by the Eastern Cape Department of Education eight years ago.

Here learners fight over broken chairs, bins, buckets and even paint tins - anything to not have to sit on the cold floor while writing exams.

According to Mandla Mesusi, chairman of the school’s governing body, teachers and students moved into the grand school building in 1995.

At first glance it seems as if teaching goes ahead without problems.

“However, the appearance can be misleading,” Mesusi said. “We have written many letters to the Department of Education, organized numerous meetings and the parents even earlier this year closed the school gates.

“So far there has been nothing but empty promises from the education department.”

Mesusi decribed a typical school day at Chubikile as “rough”.

“Teachers always have to keep the children out of each other’s hair because they fight over the few chairs and tables we have. But even what we have is dilapidated. It’s the furniture of the old school which we are still using today.

“We need about 400 new desks to provide all 714 students with a decent seat.”

Education department spokesman Mali Mtima told Indaba patience was needed by all concerned.

“It’s really sad that our children are taught and even have to write exams in these circumstances. However we have negotiated with the school to use the excess furniture of neighbouring schools, but they flatly refused. We are working on providing needy schools in the province with furniture, piece by piece,” Mtima explained.

According to Cameron McConnachie, a lawyer for the Legal Resources Centre (LRC) in Grahamstown, Chubikile is on the list of another 845 schools in the province still waiting for furniture.

The LRC has been wrangling with the dpartement on this issue since 2012. “The money is there, the list was compiled, but they have asked for extensions so many times because their paperwork and audits have not been ready.

“The latest was that the department

would have delivered all schools furniture

by June this year, but they again asked for an extension.

“The department was ordered to get the list of needy schools with numbers to date

and submit this past Friday.”

McConnachie added that if the department didn’t comply, the LRC would consider obtaining an independent unit to take over.

Little girl gets go­ahead for expensive treatment LIZEKA TANDWA PERMISSION to access very expensive enzyme replacement treatment has brought hope to the parents of little Alrene Scheepers of Booysen Park.

Five-year-old Alrene suffers from type 1 Gaucher’s disease. It’s a chronic illness that according to WebMD.com is caused by an enzyme not working correctly to break down a certain type of fat. The fat then builds up, especially in the liver and spleen.

The only available treatment for Alrene costs thousands of rands.

After a year-long struggle to get her daughter the necessary care, PE Express spoke to Renee Scheepers right after the Eastern Cape Department of Health finally agreed to the treatment.

“This is a long time coming and I can’t tell you how happy I am to hear that my child will

finally get the attention she deserves from the Dora Nginza hospital,” said Renee.

Renee who lives in the Vastrap informal settlement said she was extra worried about her child’s health during winter.

“She bruises easily and is always tired. It’s becoming more of a struggle now because it’s cold. We stay in a shack, and the effects of the environment are visible on her health every day. It pains me to see my child suffer like this knowing there is little I can do. I wouldn’t wish this pain on any parent. But to see her smiling at me and her father gives me great comfort and I know we will be OK,” said Renee.

While the Scheepers family is relieved that the health departement have approved their request, Renee said they would remain sceptical until the treatment began.

“They said to us that they had no knowledge of this disease and in order to administer the enzymes they would have to train someone.

You can imagine that it will take time; this is

also a frustration to us,” Renee added.

Eastern Cape Department of Health spokesperson Sizwe Kupelo had not responded to calls before going to print.

In a letter to the EC health department, Alrene’s doctor, Johani Vermeulen, said Imiglucerase, the medication used in the treatment of Gaucher’s disease, is produced only by Genzyme. The cost can range from a little over R20 000 to R300 000.

Vermeulen said even though the treatment seems expensive, the alternative lifelong regular platelet transfusions would be equally expensive. Vermeulen’s letter goes on to say that withholding treatment from Alrene is not in keeping in with the Child Act or her right to life-saving treatment.

Renee said all she wanted was a safe home for her child and a chance to live a better life.

“We need help and if anyone can help my child or my family I would really appreciate this,” said Renee.

Information Technology, backbone of country’s economy NCEBA DLADLA UITENHAGE lad Vusi Ncwadi started an Information Technology (IT) Solutions company to assist the youth that’s struggling to secure meaningful employment owing to lack of the currently demanding IT. “I started VMITE in 2012 because I saw a need because of the high unemployment rate and the need for those with matric certificates and other post matric training to have at least computer literacy,” said company’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Ncwadi.

“We started with a programme for primary and high school pupils last year, assisted by Microsoft as a partner,” said Ncwadi, adding that the programme was focusing on teachers - on how they could integrate ICT in the classroom

for effective teaching and learning.

The programme, an upbeat Ncwadi said, laid a solid foundation in education in that teachers who received training had to go back to their respective schools to teach other teachers.

“We now have a sizeable number of teachers in the Uitenhage townships who are using ICT resources for effective teaching and learning.

And that is benefiting school-children immensely,” said Ncwadi, adding that the programme was still running, but without sponsorship they were struggling to keep up with the demand.

Ncwadi was concerned about schools which were sponsored with computers by either government or corporates but did not use them effectively.

“Some schools have unused computer-rooms because teachers in those schools there were not computer literate. Leaners miss a huge opportu-

nity in such schools,” he said, adding that VMITE this year, has introduced a course suitable for the youth that passed matric but lacked ICT skills.

“We have a solution for those who need ICT skills but are not at school . We do an e-Learning course that’s affordable and easy to access,” said Ncwadi, adding that their aim was to build a generation of young people that will not only invest in their education but also use skills to eradicate social ills within communities.

Johannesburg-based but Eastern Cape born CIDA ICT Academy Trainer Ntombozuko Luningo who is involved in ICT training in rural and township schools congratulated VMITE Company for the initiative saying that ICT was the backbone of the country’s economy.

Luningo promised to assist the young entrepreneurs with more computers.

Nelson Mandela Bay ­ City of Champions named after world champion ­ Madiba NCEBA DLADLA NELSON Mandela Bay is the city of champions. This is the view of the flamboyant Port Elizabeth’s City of Champions President Mazizi Msutu.

“The city of champions is a unique idea about the city named after the international icon of peace, freedom and democracy Nelson Mandela who was also the first black president of South Africa,” explained Msutu, adding that there was no other city in the world named after tata Mandela.

“Through this concept,” added Msutu, “we had an idea of a city that would seek to break simultaneously world records so as to be included in the Guinness Book of Records for its firsts.”

This, however, was different from other record breaking attempts by individuals, according to Msutu.

It was mobilising and engaging the people of the city - from government, private and public sectors, from a full political spectrum, all religious beliefs, male and female, rich and poor, young and old working together to break the world records as well as setting new records.

“This, we do as we use the legacy that Madiba left us. He gave us the most important

gift in this city, his name. We have, then, an obligation to respect the name and communicate important messages to the world,” he said, adding that there was, however, a problem with everybody out there having an anecdote about Madiba - that sometimes his name would be misrepresented and abused by people with selfish interests.

He said through this concept Nelson Mandela Bay wanted to convey the core values that the old man stood for, chief of which was unity.

“We want to say to the world, here in Nelson Mandela Bay we are the champions of unity,” Msutu said, adding though, that the concept idealised individuals as champions and ambassadors of Madiba’s legacy, his values and instilling a sense of pride and belief in oneself.

So far, the city of champions has been involved in the holding of hands and clapping together, trying a world record on hula hoop, working with Eastern Province Athletics (EPA) in the Freedom Run and National Youth Day Challenge.

According to Msutu, City of Champions is a registered Trademark. It is a privately owned company with its board of directors.

They are partnering with the city, private and public sectors business and even schools.

New initiative to support and develop city businesses in technology industry REPORTER THE next great energy-efficient technology may just come from Nelson Mandela Bay, but unless it’s developed into a marketable product it is of no use.

That is where Propella comes in. This new initiative was launched in Port Elizabeth recently to support and develop city businesses in the energy technology industry.

Propella was established by Innovolve, the wholly owned commercialisation company of Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) and Engeli Enterprise Development (EDD), a private sector business support company.

“There is a real need to support and grow local manufacturing businesses. NMMU has a number of new innovative companies that need support but the need is broader than the university and that is where Propella plays a role,” says Jaci Barnett, Director of Innovation at NMMU and CEO of Innovolve.

Propella’s main areas of focus will be renewable energy generation, energy efficiency and related technologies and advanced manufacturing.

According to Wayne Oosthuizen, Managing Director of EDD, the development focus is on the entrepreneurs more than the technology or the business.

“Technologies and opportunities come and go according to product life cycles, but if a true entrepreneur can be developed, there is business longevity,” says Oosthuizen.

Furthermore the initiative aims to develop expertise in how to access finance, market access, business support and mentorship, human capital development and support in technology and innovation.

“We will focus on a model of incubate, accelerate and graduate,” remarks Oosthuizen.

Propella will also support creative arts and textile entrepreneurs from a satellite incubator on NMMU’s Bird Street premises, in the heart of Port Elizabeth’s newly developing cultural precinct. Many of the challenges experienced by new creative arts businesses are the same as for manufacturing businesses.

Businesses will go through a rigorous selection process to qualify for access to Propella and its support services, which include the provision of offices, mini assembly/manufacturing areas, comprehensive ICT infrastructure, accounting services, secretarial services and technical business support, Oosthuizen adds.

Funded by the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) for the first three years of operation, Propella will also receive financial support from NMMU, EED and local corporates, including General Motors South Africa (GMSA).

Deputy Minister Mabudafhasi to host Artists Imbizo as part NMB Cultural Festival REPORTER ARTS and Culture Deputy Minister, Rejoice Mabudafhasi, MP in partnership with the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro, will host an Artists Imbizo on Friday, July 3 at the Feather Market Hall in Port Elizabeth, Eastern Cape.

The purpose of the Imbizo is to explore

challenges and opportunities within the Arts, Culture and Heritage Sector, as well as to discuss its role towards job creation, nation building and social cohesion.

The session will also serve as a platform to discuss, amongst others, skills development and training, sustainability of the cultural and creative industries thus encouraging economic self-reliance of the artists.

The imbizo forms part of the Nelson Mandela Bay Cultural Festival that, amongst others, aims to promote the growth and contribution of the sector towards the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and tourism in the Province.

These objectives are in line with the Department Arts and Culture’s strategic goal of Mzansi Golden Economy (MGE) that

seeks to unleash the economic potential of the creative sector through large scale investment.

The Nelson Mandela Bay Cultural Festival is scheduled to take place from July 3, 2015 until August 1, 2015.

This month -mong Festival will also be used to celebrate the legacy of our liberation struggle icon, Nelson Mandela.

Opera House to reopen in November

ANNA PAUW PORT ELIZABETH’s historic Opera House will reopen its doors later this year as part of the Mandela Bay Theatre complex.

The complex, which includes the Barn Theatre and the art school in the St Mary’s Church Hall, has been undergoing renovations since 2012.

Monde Ngonyama, head of the Opera House, oldest theatre of its kind in Africa, announced last week that it would take pride of place at the reopening on Novem-

ber 20.

While excited at the prospect of an arts precinct in the city centre, Ngonyama was disappointed with Executive Mayor Danny Jordaan’s budget for the Metro’s new financial year which started today (July 1). According to Ngonyama no provision was made for the Opera House or its artists.

“The Metro Municipality simply has to invest in the arts. There is no excuse. Art, culture and heritage are central to people’s values and development,” he said.

To achieve the Opera House’s goal of elevating its surrounding area to an Arts Mec-

ca, Ngonyama said street names around the area will be renamed after artists.

So far Chapel Street, Whites Road and Belmont Terrace have been identified for renaming. It has been suggested that these three streets be renamed for the Tony Award winning actors, John Kani and Winston Ntshona and playwright Athol Fugard.

Meanwhile the Opera House will stage Ngonyama’s play, Inde Lendela at the National Arts Festival in Grahamstown.

The play centres around an elderly woman who is at long last to receive an RDP House from the municipality. The munici-

pality wants to turn the handing-over ceremony into a glitzy media affair.

On the day of the function the elderly woman who lives in a shack, refuses to accept the RDP House. It becomes a tussle between the old lady and the City Mayor, the former standing firm on principles of freedom and the latter yearning for political mileage.

Cast members include Xabiso Zweni, Dudley Tito, Aarti Narotam, Nondumiso Zweni, Marcia Ntoni, Lonwabo Xatasi and Lubabalo Mbombela, Nicky Ann Rayepen and Junior Ferreira.

Chilli Boys are Engen U/17 champs SELBY MADIKANE DESPITE playing against the hosts in the Engen U/17 finals, Chippa United were crowned as the new champions after they edged out Glenville Celtic 1-0 at John Nance Sports Centre in Gelvandale on Sunday.

Before playing finals Glenville trounced FC Motherwell 4-0 in the semi-finals while Chilli Boys eliminated Park United in their semi-finals.

In the finals, the home side put lot of pressure on the young Chilli Boys. Just before the stroke of the interval Chippa’s striker Romano Tarentaal was rewarded with a goal.

In the second half Chilli Boys kept things

tight in the centre and at the back of the field. Tarentaal won the best striker, best player and top goal scorer awards while his mentor Velile Eddie Dyaloyi was voted the coach of the tournament.

Engen Sponsorship manager Brad Bergh who was overwhelmed by the tournament which was organised, announced that Chippa United would take part in the national finals in Johannesburg.

Bergh said, “The tournament was attracting talent. The coaches did their homework and the teams were disciplined. Chippa United will play in the Champ of Champs in Johannesburg in October 2015. They are a good side and they come up as winners.”

Chippa United went home with R15000, a floating trophy and gold medals.

SWALLOWS took honours when they beat Freestate Sto Tavern 4-0 in the finals of the Carling Black Label Cup League finals at Saints Grounds in Gelvandale on Sunday.

Apparently the tournament is played by the tavern football teams. However, the tournament started in a round robin before the knockout stage.

The teams were divided into two sections.

Sto Tavern became Section A winners while Swallows were Section B winners.

Swallows were all over the Freestaters who

were chasing the shadows. In the first half Swallows led 1-0, a goal thanks to Farouk Abrahams.

Early in the second half Abrahams rounded three defenders of Sto Tavern and he finished his brace.

The Freestate team appeared to be running out of ideas as they could not contain Swallows’. Kirk de Boer bagged Swallows third goal.

Doora Moodien came from deep and he penetrated between Sto players when he pulled a spectacular goal that beat the Sto goalkeeper.

Swallows went home with a floating trophy.

Swallows will participate in the national finals in Johannesburg in October.

TO THE dismay of the supporters, some top guns kissed goodbye the ZAFA Njeya Investments Knockout Tournament that was played at Dynamos Grounds on Saturday.

Seven United, known for being competition specialists, disappointed their loyal supporters when they lost 2-1 to Real Stars. NUBS who played their hearts out lost 4-3 on penalties to Eleven Angels after the 1-1 regulations time.

United Comrades had to dig deep when they won 2-0 in their enterprising game that they

played against BUBS. Young Romans were too strong for City All Stars whom they handed a 3-1 defeat.

Fans will be treated to the enthralling semifinals when Young Romans take on Real Stars and United Comrades face Eleven Angels at Wolfson Stadium on Saturday.

SELBY MADIKANE SASFA Motherwell Primary Schools Spur Masidlale U/13 League ultimately pulled its season curtain down at Motherwell NU 2 Stadium on Tuesday.

The schools, which were divided into two streams both in boys and girls, started the league in a round robin. The two top teams in each stream league booked themselves a berth in the semi-finals.

In the girls’ finals Melisizwe Primary School were crowned as winners after they defeated Zanoxolo Primary School 1-0 on penalties following their goalless fulltime draw. In the boys’ finals Enkwenkwezini Primary School overcame Melisizwe Primary School 2-0 on penalties after the game ended in a stalemate.

The winning schools received gold medals and all the schools that participated in Spur Masidlale U/13 League were given bags and activity books.

The guest speaker Siphokazi Maqwili from Grassroots Soccer stated that ‘sport keeps the children healthy and fit.

Maqwili said, “Sport keeps you in good

shape and off the streets. Your parents feel happy because you take part in sport. Some of you might be tempted to do crime if you were not in sport. All the children who take part in sport are not interested in taking drugs and doing crime. I am happy to see these children being busy.”

Spur Masidlale League coordinator Thanduxolo Yebho Ntoni stated that there were no hassles in so much that the event was a resounding success. The coaches and teachers were supportive throughout the tournament. The schools which did not take part in the league are worth mentioning.

“The teams which won the league will be spoiled by Spur and will be the ball boys and ball girls during some Chippa United home games.”

Thembani Okolo is Nelson Mandela Bay boxing’s rising Star NCEBA DLADLA NELSON Mandela Bay boxing has a rising star in the name of Thembani Okolo, a strawweight from Motherwell township in Port Elizabeth.

With only two fights as a professional, Okolo has already amassed quite a substantial following from the boxing mad Eastern Cape fans.

Going to the ring clad like a Zulu-Warrior carrying a guitar like a Maskandi musician Okolo beat Mziyanda Links in opening his account as a pro in Port Elizabeth a month ago and last weekend in Port Alfred he dispatched Malibongwe Mashalaba of King Williams

Sophakama Ladies gave Warriors a 5-0 hiding at Gal City Grounds on Saturday. The first two goals of Sophakama came courtesy of Zimkhitha Msizi in the 15 th and 25th minutes. Sibulele Holweni also bagged a goal in the 28th minute.

NAFA Premier League weekend results SELBY MADIKANE HELENVALE who had been leading the pack for almost the rest of the Northern Areas Football Association (NAFA) Premier, failed to maintain their position over the past Saturday.
