elson Mandela Bay Metro Executive Mayor Danny Jordaan has called on residents as well as businesses to be more environmentally aware and conscientious about their waste.

Jordaan said he had noticed that many of the public areas – in places such as Durban Road, Korsten, are plagued with litter and pollution, owing to illegal dumping.

“I have met our waste management offi-

cials, and can assure our residents that we are doing everything we can to negate the results of illegal dumping. However, we will never win the war if people simply continue to dump their litter in the streets, despite our waste management officials doing everything they can to clean them,” Jordaan said.

Jordaan said he therefore called on all businesses, hawkers, commuters, taxi rank operators and the general public to take more pride in the Bay. “The communities that we live and work in, such as Korsten, belong to the people. It is your communal property to nurture, develop

and keep clean. As the municipality, we will assist you in doing so, but all that we ask is that you deposit your litter in the public waste management bins and facilities that are provided by your municipality. We ask our businesses to make the necessary arrangements, either with private companies or with the Municipality, to have their refuse from their premises collected on a daily basis.”

Jordaan said the municipal waste management officials cleaned all public areas between 10pm and 2am every day from Monday to Friday.

“If one visits Korsten for example at 2.30am,

one will see that the streets are spotless. From 6am until 2.30pm, street sweepers are employed to sweep the streets and empty litter bins. However, the extent of those who disrespect the environment by littering and dumping overwhelms the municipal efforts in cleaning our streets,” Jordaan ended.

In an ealier interview with Indaba Express, Metro Communications Director Roland Williams said they had prepared and approved a comprehensive strategy to eliminate illegal dumping. “Once the strategy has been fully implemented, visible changes will be noticed,” said Williams.

News24 reported that Putco had announced it would not renew loss-making tender contracts on certain routes in Tshwane, Ekurhuleni and Sedibeng municipalities in Gauteng. According to the report increases in subsidies for bus contracts had been consistently lower than increases in cost items like fuel, labour, and maintenance. An off-duty police officer in a shoot-out incident NCEBA DLADLA MEMBERS of South African Police Service (SAPS) in Port Elizabeth are investigating cases of murder and attempted murder for police investigation.

According to Provincial Police spokesperson Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg, an inquest docket relating to the death of the suspect in a murder case would be handled by the

Independent Police Investigative Directorate for investigation.

This follows an incident on Saturday July 4 where a 40 year-old off-duty Mount Roadbased Warrant Officer responded to a shooting incident in the Booysen Park area, Port Elizabeth early Saturday morning.

Hospital seeks family of pregnant teen NCEBA DLADLA THE Dora Nginza Hospital is looking for the family of Sindiswa Meyer (19) who was admitted to the hospital without an address on June 28 after feeling dizzy and vomiting.

The problem facing hospital authorities is that she has to be discharged, but has nowhere to go with her unborn child.

“We have tried everything in our power, with the assistance of the police in Motherwell, to help Sindiswa. However, until we find her relatives or someone responsible for her, we are not getting anywhere,” said the hospital’s principal social worker, Pamela Rubushe.

Rubushe said Sindiswa told her she lived in Motherwell and had been taken in by her mother’s cousin when her mother died about three years ago.

But things didn’t work out and she was then taken in by a man from Veeplaas who apparently had a bad influence on her.

“We need her relatives. She said she had sisters named Xolelwa, Rara, Joyce and Ronica,” said Rubushe, adding that Ronica was believed to be in Uitenhage.

Uitenhage Market place helping women in business NCEBA DLADLA NELSON Mandela Bay women in business are benefiting immensely from the wisdom of Uitenhage citizen Lilly De Jong who started in 2013 Women In Business Initiative to help emerging business women exploit the market.

“We started this initiative, a non-profitmaking organisation with the primary purpose of promoting, supporting and helping established and new businesses to grow,” said De Jong, adding the initiative was giving the small businesses exposure and that the Uiten-

hage Market has since an important part of the local shopping community.

Since the initiative held once a month, hundreds of those in business in the Uitenhage area who can’t afford overheads like rent, electricity, lights, hiring of staff and so forth, bring stalls at the Willow Dam to sell their items at the marketplace.

A small fee was charged to those putting up their stalls while De Jong had proof owing to a number of those who always want to take part in the event that they were at least making profit.

“We give a platform to those involved in anything from food stalls, street vending,

fashion designing, arts and craft, dance and live music of different genres to sell for profit,” said De Jong, adding that last Sunday they attracted about 5000 people.

“We attracted about 5000 in winter. We double this number in summer,” said an enthusiastic De Jong, adding that they made sure that their events always brought fun to all the members of the family.

“We are always thrilled by the success stories of stall holders and the positive impact the market has brought in lives and families,” an elated De Jong said, adding that plans were afoot to start the initiative in the Port Elizabeth area as well.

Promise of better life for the youth NCEBA DLADLA THE launch of the Love Life Leadership Academy at the VW Peoples’ Pavilion in Uitenhage last Thursday was hailed as a positive move to fight rampant youth unemployment in Nelson Mandela Bay. According to Statistics South Africa, unemployment has worsened since 2008, and many young people have given up the search for jobs.

Nelson Mandela Bay Stats SA district survey coordinator Garren Nel revealed that of the country’s 19.7 million young people of employable age, only 6.2 million had jobs. This was while the education profile of young South African people had improved tremendously.

Nel noted, however, that young people

were most likely to find employment in the informal sector and in short term employment.

Without job prospects, young people were prone to getting involved in many social ills like drug and substance abuse, crime and unplanned pregnancy. Something tangible to engage the youth and give them hope was needed to be found, said Love Life Leadership Academy managing director Treaty Moshoeshoe.

She said the youth needed help and the academy, launched for the first time in South Africa, was a game changer that would offer young people in KwaNobuhle an array of accredited training and self-development skills programmes. This would help them to bridge the skills gap by providing them with educational, employment and entrepreneurship opportunities.

With the launch of the leadership academy, young people would help other youngsters to be job creators rather than job seekers. The academy would provide them with skills in generic management and business administration.

Other skills training included workplace integration, financial literacy, life coaching and events management, said Miss South Africa Basetsana Kumalo, who is the academy’s chairperson.

Kumalo urged KwaNobuhle youth to

seize the opportunity and get the necessary skills to live a better life.

She said the Love Life Leadership Academy was targeted at training and upskilling 40 000 young people in the country. This would be a drop in the ocean, but something that must be done with the support of the private sector to help the country’s future leaders get the skills required to face the current challenges.

“The Love Life Leadership Academy will deliver!” she said.

Stats SA community survey job applications open NCEBA DLADLA UNEMPLOYED young people of Nelson Mandela Bay with a matric certificate and a driving licence have an opportunity to find employment with Statistics South Africa (Stats SA).

“Stats SA will engage in a community

survey in 2016 and unemployed young people with matric and a driver’s licence will be employed to visit families in their communities for the survey,” said Statistics SA District Survey Coordinator Garren Nel. According to Nel, Stats SA has targeted young people for this job creation initiative because the high unemployment rate

is adversely affecting more and more young people.

He said applicants should apply on StatsSA’s website before July 30.

“The community survey is being done to help us upgrade statistics information.

It follows five years after the population census to help the government in planning, in the National Development Plan

(NDP) and in decision-making processes,” Nel said. .Interested members of the public should go to the Stats SA website at www.statssa.gov.za to find the application form which they must fill out and make sure that they attach a copy of their identity document and certified copies of their matric certificate and driver’s licence.

Nkebe shares secrets of business success NCEBA DLADLA HIGH business acumen, love and respect for the community with whom he does business is what keeps Build It (Motherwell) owner Sibongile Nkebe going strong every day.

Nkebe, of Despatch, says his key to success is working well with local structures such as the councillor, local churches and schools in Motherwell.

Since passing matric at Thubelihle High School in 1996 and graduating in 2001 with a B Com degree from Vista University, which is now part of the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, Nkebe has had his sights firmly on business.

A beneficiary of the Khula Enterprise Development and National Youth Development Agency Voucher, Nkebe owns a very successful DIY store in NU 9 Motherwell.

“I worked at Standard Bank from 2001 to 2006 and then I decided to partner Paul De Villiers as co-owner of Build It. The following year, I took the bold step of sole proprietorship and have never looked back,” said Nkebe, who was inspired to become a businessman by his cousin Bongani Katshwa, who owns a CTM Branch in Queenstown.

“I stayed with him in the same house. I targeted the age of 40 to start being self-employed, not knowing however, that at 28 I would be a success in business,” said a proud

Nkebe, who is married to Ntombentsha.

He said he believed in planning early and knowing the needs of the community he was serving.

He also communicated with independent contractors who built houses for the communities, to learn about their needs.

His store was voted among the top 20 stores in the southern hemisphere in 2008 and 2012, winning him trips to Egypt and Mauritius respectively.

“There are challenges though, like the recession in 2008 and even last year, but at least now I’ve got the experience that keeps me going. I am also surrounded by a team of dedicated and hard-working employees who understand my work ethos,” Nkebe said proudly.

Build It Motherwell sponsors local football (Mofa) development and through that initiative the third largest township in South Africa has a team, Real City FC, participating in the semi-professional ABC Motsepe League.

He is also the head of Silindokuhle Boxing Promotions, a company that is opening doors to a number of promising Nelson Mandela Bay pugilists.

Nkebe said he believed there were opportunities out there and he advised the youth to know what they wanted, to be passionate about it and to separate business from pleasure.

Happily married to Nomfundo and the father of two boys and four girls, Msutu is a champion of community development who believes in the power of education.

Msutu is a real “Baaienaar”. Born in KwaZakhele and growing up in Zwide, he prides himself in having attended township schools.

Volunteers from Cell C’s regional office in Port Elizabeth visited the SOS Village in Port Elizabeth, which recently celebrated its 19th anniversary and is home to 118 children, and handed over 67 Blankets for Mandela Day. Situated in the suburb of Schauderville, the

Algoa Park couple Mthetheleli and Nomonde Ntshikose recently celebrated their silver jubilee, 25 years of happy marriage, with family, friends and colleagues at the Malabar Community Hall. The couple, who met in the Transkei, cut the cake and told the gathering about the sweet journey they had travelled despite the challenges of daily living. SPIRITED children from Motherwell celebrated the end of Environment Month with Xhosa song and dance in a concert at the Motherwell library.

The 50 kids who belong to the Zwartkops Conservancy’s Motherwell Enviro Club said they wanted to ensure that people in their area learn about the importance of the environment.

Motherwell Enviro Club’s founder Patricia Ntaba said she collected kids from different areas in Motherwell and taught them the importance of the environment through song and dance.

“I had to make it fun for them

and not just make it only about the picking up of rubbish on the streets. We also have a programme and they sing environmental songs that make them more able to understand the need,” said Ntaba.

Ntaba said they arrange a concert annually with the help of Zwartkops Conservancy and the municipality.

“Through our work at Zwartkops Conservancy, I was able to come up with this concept and I have 50 kids now who are members of this club in the Motherwell area.

“We also receive some assistance from the municipality through donation of a venue, which is great for us,” said Ntaba.

Gospel singers to compete for chance to record album NCEBA DLADLA PORT Elizabeth Christian community radio station PE FM will hold its annual The Ultimate Gospel Awards (TUGA) competition at the Babs Madlakane Community Hall in KwaNobuhle this Saturday.

Organising committee member Pastor John Sampson said TUGA was the station’s recruitment drive to find raw singing talent in Nelson Mandela Bay. He said they had started with the Uitenhage region and would continue to the Port Elizabeth area before the grand finale set for Happy Valley on December 6.

TUGA was a great success last year, according to Sam-

pson.

The first winner of the event, Port Elizabeth’s Nicholas Geswindt, was enjoying the success of winning the inaugural event, he said.

“Nicholas is in Johannesburg as we speak to finalise production of his debut album under the leadership and guidance of the renowned gospel producer, Jabu Nkabinde.”

Sampson said this year’s winner would also receive a recording contract and be linked up with the best in the business, after being refined through TUGA’ process of rigorous nurturing.

Sampson said the TUGA event at Happy Valley on December 6 would be a familyfriendly affair.

Dream realised by Young Ideas SELBY MADIKANE YOUNG Ideas has joined other teams of the Nelson Mandela Bay in the ABC Motsepe League when they won all their SAFA SAB League Provincial Playoffs at Thandanani Stadium in Matatiele from 3 to 5 July 2015.

Ideas who were in Group A joined Bush Pirates (SAFA Cacadu), BEE Stars (SAFA OR Tambo) and Thando Holy Stars (SAFA Chris Hani), with the playing field being Thandanani Stadium.

The teams that were in Group B were Walter Sisulu University (SAFA Amathole), Junior Chiefs (SAFA Joe Gqabi) and The Stars (SAFA Alfred Nzo) Future Stars (SAFA Buffalo City) ,with their playing field being North End Stadium.

The hosting region was Alfred Nzo. The playoffs were played according to the point system only while the group leaders gained automatic promotions to ABC Motsepe League. The Bay heroes won all their games.

rates 3-0 with Asanda Matsitse Makana, Sonwabile Ngetu and Nceba Neymar Sizani scoring a goal apiece.

In their second game against BEE Stars, Makana bagged the only goal that sealed the game.

In their last game Ideas’ last goal in their closing game against Thando Holy Stars came courtesy of Sonwabile Mgedesi.

Young Ideas Head Coach Bulelani Mutapa Fina highlighted the hard work which contributed to their success throughout the whole season.

Fina said, “We only won simply because of all the effort we put through together as a team this season. We really wanted to be promoted. All the hard work we put through was rewarded. As the coach I am happy with the way the players have worked so tirelessly throughout the season.

“I want to thank the club chairman Sobantu Madlavu, the club management, the players, our supporters and parents for the support they rendered. Our dream has really come true.”

City All Stars make their history in ZAFA Njeya Investments First Division SELBY MADIKANE FOLLOWING their impressive form, City All Stars finally made history when they won the ZAFA Njeya Investments First Division prestige league trophy at Wolfson Stadium on Sunday since their inception.

Stars played 40 league games without any loss, having won three games. The Stars heroes have heaped heartbreak on the Golden Brothers in their goalless draw, for Brothers were desperate for three points to finish in the second position of the log table so that they would qualify for premier league promotions.

Stars Head Coach Mthobeli Tom stated his side showed commitment, discipline and character throughout the entire season.

All Stars received a floating trophy and 25 gold medals while Major Stars went home with a runners-up trophy and 25 silver medals.

Young Neighbours star striker Mahlubandile Kobe’s brace sank Silver United who had no reply.

Everton FC drubbed Stone Breakers 4-0 while Moonlight City failed to pitch up for their game with Silver United on Saturday.

Basketball results SELBY MADIKANE FANS were entertained when Nelson Mandela Bay Basketball Metro Super League hosted some goals-galore games at Raymond Mhlaba Sports Complex in Motherwell NU 4 B on Sunday.

Expandables, who were high-riding, beat Mighty Ducks 72-45. Gemineyez, who were spitting fire, hammered U-town with a whopping score of 125-35.

Fans were again sent into raptures when Gemineyez thumped Spartans 10868.

Helenvale back on top of NAFA Premier League log table SELBY MADIKANE HAVING started the season on a high note, Helenvale made their intentions clear when they returned to their top spot on the NAFA Premier League log table on Saturday.

Helenvale put up a brave effort when they

hammered Hotspurs 3-0 at Moredyke. Last week Helenvale dropped to third position when they drew 1-1 with Park United in their last first round outing.

Playing away from home Helenvale showed that they were the side with a mandate to fulfil.

Stars, with a lot of inexperienced players, need to put their house in order following their string of poor performances, but time will tell.
