Small business now also wants metro to write off their debt LIZEKA TANDWA THE National African Federated Chamber of Commerce (Nafcoc) wants its members’ electricity debts written off by the municipality, saying they are just as entitled to this as high-energy users are.

This comes after R100-million owed by high-energy users to the municipality for unpaid electricity bills and interest was written off.

Nafcoc represents SMMEs and is, according to its website, an independent and non-profit business support organisation primarily, but not exclusively, serving the black community.

According to DA leader Retief Odendaal, the council approved the deal with reservations after it was put into a corner by big business in a settlement which involved 13 high-energy users.

Only R45-million of the R140-million owed by big business had been recouped by the municipality, said UDM councillor Mongameli Bobani.

Bobani said the agreement had been approved by the council with reservations as most of the councillors were against this settlement.

Now Nafcoc president Mnyamezeli Dyalabe says he wants the metro to write off the R20-million in debt that its members owe the metro.

“It’s unfair that they release the big industry players and leave us out of that deal. We contribute greatly to the economy of this metro and we cannot survive with these high tariffs imposed on us,” said Dyalabe.

He said they had on several occasions requested this from the munici-

pality and the local ruling party, but their request had fallen on deaf ears.

“We want the same treatment. We also employ a number of people in these communities. What would they say if we closed shop?” he added.

Bobani said he was aware of this plea by Nafcoc and had raised his concerns with mayor Danny Jordaan before the matter was tabled in council.

“We saw this coming and we knew that others would come out saying they wanted their debts written off,” Bobani said.

Odendaal said 50% of the electricity in the metro was consumed by high energy users who made up the bulk of the municipality’s clients. “We warned against the administration fighting against business because we saw this coming. The 2014/15 budget had flaws and the minority opposition also voted for this budget. The reality is that we now have to ensure a sustainable metro,” Odendaal said.

Cope councillor Mzwandile Hote said the settlement had been hugely influenced by the more than 4 000 jobs that could be lost if the high-energy users moved their business.

“I understand the frustration of black business, but it’s unfair to say that all business debt now has to be written off. We have never heard any of Nafcoc’s concerns or we would have raised them in council. We are saying they must come to us so we can assist them in any way we can,” Hote said.

Nelson Mandela Bay Business Chamber CEO Kevin Hustler said he could not comment on the matter as they had agreed with the high-energy users as well as the municipality to keep the matter confidential.

Booze seized, tavern closed NCEBA DLADLA THOUSANDS of litres of alcohol have been seized by KwaNo-buhle police this past weekend.

“In a joint operation between members of the South African Police Service (SAPS) and Liquor Board Inspectors, a local tavern selling illegally in KwaNobuhle

township was officially closed,” said Sergeant Majola Nkohli.

During the operation about 8 000 litres of alcohol were confiscated.

According to Nkohli, this was an attempt to clean the Uitenhage township of illegal operations and ensure that licensed outlets were sticking to the rules and regulations.

The very same tavern that was closed during the raid was also closed last year. At the time the owner was warned to apply for registration.

“We realised that the tavern was still operating without a licence so we had to act,” Nkohli said.

The owner will now face charges of contravening the Liquor Act.

Organised young criminals suspected in Algoa Bus robberies LIZEKA TANDWA A GROUP of organised young criminals are suspected to be behind the robbery at gunpoint of Algoa Bus passengers in two separate incidents last week.

The Police and Algoa Bus Company have put strategies in place to deal with the robberies which left a woman (50) wounded.

Algoa Bus CEO Sicelo Duze said he believed that the robberies were in retaliation by a group of criminals after the bus company had beefed up their security by putting safety locks on their money containers to prevent more robberies.

“I think that these thieves are now retaliating against us by targeting our passengers,” said Duze.

Duze said they had had continuous meetings with top officials within the police force.

“We have strategies in place to prevent this from happening, which I am sure you can appreciate that I am unable to share with you,” he said.

The robberies took place last week Tuesday and Wednesday afternoon with over 30 commuters on the buses during both incidents.

During both incidents three men, armed with fire-arms, got into the bus, which was en route to Uitenhage, at the same bus stop in Joe Slovo Informal Settlement.

An eyewitness to Monday’s incident said the robbers walked away with jewellery, cell phones and an undisclosed amount of money.

“They came in with guns and demanded we give them our valuables. I was seated at the back and I managed to hide my cellphone and money.

“One of the men pointed the gun at me and I told him I had nothing in my bag. I was lucky because as one of the guys was trying to snatch my bag, one passenger started having an asthma attack. They ran out with people’s valuables. It was the most traumatic experience of my life,” said the passenger.

The passenger said the bus driver then drove them to Mount Road police station

where commuters reported the incident to the police.

Police Warrant Officer Dumile Gwavu said three armed men were also involved in the other incident, which took place at about 6:40pm on Wednesday.

“One was pointing (a gun) at the driver while the other two searched the passengers for valuables. One woman was shot in the leg and the suspects fled. The woman was taken to Livingstone hospital were she was treated.

No other passengers were injured,” said Gwavu.

Gwavu said the police had opened a case of attempted murder and robbery and no suspects had been arrested.

No Ubuntu when gogo Nomonde Didishe needed it NCEBA DLADLA WHY did nobody visit her? Why did nobody report her missing? And how come Gogo Nomonde Didishe’s body was only discovered nearly five weeks after she died?

These are the questions haunting neighbours and residents of Sarhili Street in KwaNobuhle where the gogo’s badly decomposed body was discovered last week.

Her demise came to light only after a neighbour, Nombasa Maseti saw flies around the house last Thursday. She knocked, but there was no answer.

“It was then that we realised that we’ve not seen Gogo in a while,” said Reverend Andile Maseti.

“The body was so badly decomposed that it was taken from the parlour straight to the cemetery,” according to police officer Constable Kiambu Kamba.

Didishe’s death sparked a march for peace and Ubuntu from Love Life Y-Centre via Lawrence Street by members of the SAPS and community structures.

This was followed by a memorial service, organised by Manager of Police Sector 2, Const. Thembisa Ngcelwane at her home.

Those who took the platform like members of the SAPS, local churches, the Community Policing Forum, (CPF), Outreach Centre, SA National Civic Organisation (SANCO) Branch, Phaphani Rape Crises and ANC Ward 42 member Nonkululeko Webb lambasted heinous acts of crime and “the non-caring attitude among neighbours so preva-

lent nowadays.”

Ntombekhaya Daku, a community member revealed that the gogo, who was staying alone, had earlier been the victim of rape by a younger family member. The man is currently serving a jail sentence for the horrendous crime.

Gogo Didishe was laid to rest at Matanzima Cemetery on Saturday 11 July, but still, no-one really knows what happened to her.

“We do not know what happened.

We cannot say at this stage whether she was murdered. Police have opened an inquest docket for investigation,” said police spokesperson Sergeant Majola Nkohli, adding that anyone with information that can assist police in their investigation should contact the KwaNobuhle police in Mkoko Street.

Police also asked residents to look out for each other, especially the elderly. ) Constable Ngcelwane urged members of the community to notify her office when an elderly citizen was staying alone in the house so that police could do home visits; ) Those who stayed with the elderly and were to leave them for some time, should inform police; ) The local clinic, when informed, also visit the elderly at home and supply them with medication; ) Residents can also register elderly family members or elderly people living on their own at Phaphani Rape Crises which has a database of elderly citizens in KwaNobuhle who need food or care. ) At the very least get involved with a street committee or neighbourhood watch

Kasi dogs get help at Kwazakhele police station NCEBA DLADLA DOG is man’s best friend as the saying goes.

But it seems man is not dog’s best friend. At least not in Kwazakhele where a number of stray animals have been knocked down, injured and even killed on the roads.

But help is at hand. Members of the Kwazakhele police station and the Animal-Anti Cruelty League are offering assistance to pet owners.

“At Kwazakhele police station we saw the plight of animals in the township and led by Sergeant Sonja van Eck decided to do something,” said Major Maryke Pistorius.

Tuesdays have been set aside to look after and support injured, hungry and needy dogs in the community.

The Animal Anti-Cruelty League also visits on these days to offer the best treatment for pets, including free dog food as received from other members of the public.

“We’d like to take this opportunity to thank those people who donate, but must emphasise that we need more blankets, dog food and leashes,” said Pistorius.

She added that pet owners who can no longer take good care of their dogs should rather hand them over to the Animal-Anti Cruelty League than abandon them to fend for themselves.

Little Roxanne safe and sound back with her mom NCEBA DLADLA JOY returned to the family of little Roxanne Stuurman who was reported as missing almost three weeks ago.

Algoa Police have reunited the three year old Missionvale toddler with her jubilant mother, Portia Stuurman.

Port Elizabeth police spokesperson Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg said the Police’s Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offence Unit (FCS) followed up all possible leads since the 10th of June when the toddler was reported missing at the Algoa Park Police station.

Police were told that Roxanne was taken to Kenako Mall, Struandale, Port Elizabeth by her mother’s ex-boyfriend at about 1:50pm.

Stuurman was concerned when the man did not return the child after two hours.

When she tried to contact him, his cellphone was off, Janse van Rensburg said at

the time.

Stuurman told Express Indaba that she had broken off her relationship with the man. He did, however, have a good relationship with little Roxanne and she had allowed him to take the child with him that day.

The search for the little girl and the 28 year-old man led police to Fort Beaufort.

Last Tuesday around 9pm police positively identified the address where the two had been and found the man and little Roxanne.

“The child was reunited with her mother Portia Stuurman. The investigator arranged that Roxanne be examined by a doctor at Dora Nginza Hospital,” said Janse van Rensburg.

The man now faces kidnapping charges and is expected to appear in the New Brighton Magistrate’s Court this week.

“I have learnt my lesson. He will not be allowed near Roxanne again,”said Stuurman.

Alrene receives first dose of medication LIZEKA TANDWA IT’S all systems go for little Alrene Scheepers who received her first dose of enzyme replacement treatment on Monday after a 19-month-long struggle to receive the medication.

There were no tears from the six year old as the nurse pushed a needle into her small arm.

Speaking to PE Express on Monday, Alrene’s father, Alfonso, could not contain his emotion and was close to tears as the realisation of his dream for his youngest daughter was finally coming true.

Little Alrene was diagnosed 19 months ago with type 1 Gaucher’s disease, a chronic illness that is caused by an enzyme not working efficiently to break down a certain type of fat.

The emotional journey led the family through a long fight with Dora Nginza hospital which delayed treating the little girl as the hospital said they were unable to locate funding for the R36 000 a month enzyme replacement treatment.

After 18 months and massive local media coverage, the hospital’s CEO, Dr Nandipha Qangule, and the Eastern Cape Department of Health (DoH) signed off on the order but a further delay was caused by the hospital’s pharmacy which delayed the process for a month owing to lack of funds.

“This is the happiest day of my life. It feels like all the phone calls and long meetings with hospital administrators were not for nothing. She is finally getting the treatment she deserves and as a father and provider it makes me happy to see this realisation,” said Alfonso.

According to Dr Lungile Pepeta, Alrene will undergo enzyme replacement biweekly through a drip transfusion at Provincial Hospital. “The system is not complicated and she will be able to travel home after we administer her drip. On Monday we had to monitor her heart because her spleen had grown enormously and it was affecting her organs. After this week, we are sure that the process will be relatively smooth and we don’t expect any complications,” said Pepeta.

Qangule said Alrene was taken to the Provincial Hospital’s Paediatric Oncology unit because there was no space at Dora Nginza hospital.

Qangule said she has had back-to-back meetings with pharmaceutical company Sanofi S.A. and the Rare Disease Society in order to come up for a discounted price in Alrene’s medication. “When I came in as the CEO in September, our budget by that time was running on empty and from view of cost we couldn’t accommodate Alrene.

When we received our new financial year’s budget we had only a 1% increase and unfortunately the need of public health always outstrips available resources. It’s a difficult decision to spend on one patient when there is a need to spend on so many.”

Qangule said Genzyme, who produce the enzyme which Alrene will need for her entire life, will sponsor her medical aid after a year’s waiting period.

“We will provide treatment until the expiry of that year. What makes this drug expensive is that it’s not in the essential drug list but it is bought outside the normal drug list. Initially, quotations were R34 000 and then they rose to R36 000 and we calculate that cost will be more than R40 000 by the end of the year because of exchange rates,” said Qangule.

According to DoH spokesperson Sizwe Kupelo the department has committed to only 6 months’ funding for Alrene’s medication and Dora Nginza Hospital, as well as Provincial Hospital, will have to locate funding for the remainder of the treatment.

Youth gives back to other youngsters UNIVERSITY of Fort Hare graduate Nomhlobo Vusani has always wanted to do something to better the lives of young people in her community.

Armed with a BA Honours degree in Psychology, Vusani (30) of KwaNobuhle found like-minded people in Thembakazi Kula (27) and Siyakhumbula Pikini (30) also of KwaNobuhle with whom she registered the Child And Adolescents Care Centre (CACC), a NonGovernmental Organisation (NGO) life-skills programme to benefit KwaNobuhle youth.

Kula is a qualified teacher with a BEd degree while Pikini has been involved with the youth in various roles in the community.

“We are targeting young people and adolescents (aged between 12 and 18) for life skills training and mentoring,” said Vusani. The aim, she added was to have a positive impact on the young and they currently had a relationship with at least three schools with a view to working in tandem with other local schools.

SELBY MADIKANE HUNDREDS of pupils, parents and teachers braved the chilly wet weather conditions when Transnet Engineering donated 150 desks to Esitiyeni Public Primary School in Zwide on Thursday.

Speaking to the audience, Transnet Engineering Chief Executive Thamsanqa Jiyane stated that they received a request from Department of Education PE District Office revealing that Esitiyeni were in dire need of desks. Jiyane said that they were given the history of Esitiyeni. Jiyane said, “When we learned about this school’s major challenge of desks and doors, we decided to come to their rescue. Our team made these strong desks because our campaign says, ‘build your desk and build your future’ We strongly believe that the youth is a future of South Africa. I hope that the doors when donated and put in

Next to a giant mural of the university’s iconic namesake, Nelson Mandela, titled “Where do you see yourself in 10 years?”, the pupils pinned notes about future possible careers and life experiences.

These ranged from jobs as chartered accountants to neurosurgeons to social workers to self-employed business owners, both in South Africa and abroad.

“The Grade 11 Accounting Winter School is about much more than academic work,” said NMMU Accounting 1 senior lecturer and Winter

School programme coordinator, Ansulene Prinsloo.

“Yes, we want the pupils to improve their marks, which will help them when they apply to university or for bursaries. But we also want to teach them the life skills they will need to be successful.”

That is why the Winter School, themed “Your future in focus”, was peppered with motivational talks by staff from international professional services firm PwC, along with NMMU accounting students who were excelling among their peers. In addition, for the first time in the three-year history of the Grade 11 Winter School, mentors were assigned to the pupils’ tutorial groups.

The mentors are either qualified chartered accountants working at PwC, or doing their training contract at PwC, the firm that sponsored the Winter School.

Callies concede three points ONLY three games were played in Port Elizabeth Football Association (PEFA) Score Energy Drink League over the weekend.

It seems as if Central Acemates had shown the weaknesses of Callies as the Londt Park side suffered their second defeat of the season following their 3-2 loss to Forresters at Forest Park on Saturday.

Royal Bucs win Manchester FC Tourney SELBY MADIKANE ROYAL Bucs were crowned as Manchester FC Tournament champions when they beat the hosts 1-0 in the finals that were played at Wells Estates Community Grounds on Sunday.

The tournament which was played by 12 teams was played in a knockout format.

According to the Tournament Organiser Thamsanqa Klaassen the aim of the event was to keep the youth in sport and to develop grass roots sport. The tournament has drawn crowds in their droves since it started.

In the semifinals Royal Bucs managed

to beat Young Romans 2-0 while Manchester FC won 5-4 on penalties following a goalless fulltime draw. In the finals both teams were high-spirited and the goalkeepers were equal to the task. Bucs’ only goal was good enough to seal the game.

Bucs were awarded R2000, 20 gold medals and a floating trophy while Manchester FC went home with R1000 and 20 silver medals.

NMB boxers in Cape Town tourney to honour Madiba NCEBA DLADLA TWO Nelson Mandela Bay pugilists will be taking part in a 15-bout boxing extravaganza scheduled to take place in Khayelitsha, Cape Town on Mandela Day, this Saturday 18 July.

Bongani Ngcese (Junior Middleweight) and Thembani Okolo (Junior Flyweight) will face Ncedile Kafile and Avela Mavolontiya respectively, in a 72-rounds worth tournament organised by businessman Duma Nogaga in honour of Madiba who, he said, “Fought a good fight.”

Nogaga who runs petrol stations in Gugulethu and Khayelitsha said he was happy to offer his 67 minutes for Mandela’s tribute, for “Madiba fought a good fight.”

“We are having 72 rounds of boxing on the day and that’s a lot of punches. I can guarantee you this is a first of its kind,” said Nogaga,

whose bill is bankrolled by the Western Cape government and Bato Star Holdings.

“We are happy we’ll be involved in a tournament to honour the legendary Madiba, who himself was once a boxer. My boxers are ready and will put up a good fight in Cape Town,” the two local lads’ mentor Mzwandile Sidina said.

Sidina was aware that Kafile was a veteran of the sport. He believes his no-nonsense KO specialist Ngcese will dispatch him in less than the six scheduled rounds. A quality puncher with massive ringcraft, Ngceshe has only two fights but already rates at Number 9 in Boxing South Africa top 10 ratings.

Mavolontiya who faces Okolo, according to matchmaker Vooks Sonandzi, was a no-vice with a good amateur record.

“He must be strong, otherwise, he’ll fall,” said Sidina proudly.

Collegians looked disorganized as they caused glaring mistakes in the crucial areas of field. Koeberg noticed that their opponents could not come together and he cut through the forwards of Collegians and he delivered a perfect pass to his right wing Fernando Fillis who scored in the corner of the scoring line but his try was not converted by Koeberg.

As the scoreline was 19-19 Collegians changed their strategy as a result Lukwe scored a try under the poles . Skelem conversion broke the spoils to put Collegians 26-19 ahead.

Diamond’s drop goal sealed the game at 29-19 in favour of Young Collegians. Collegians’ second team and reserve side won their games 28-0 each over Central.

Comrades lift ZAFA Njeya Investments KO trophy SELBY MADIKANE IT was a do-or-die when United Comrades lifted ZAFA Njeya Investments Knockout Trophy after they overcame Young Romans 6-5 in sudden death following their 1-1 full time score during the finals at Wolfson Stadium on Saturday.

Comrades, affectionately known as Amaqabane, failed to capitalise in the first half.

Amaqabane veteran striker Vuyani Jomo Mtati failed to score a glorious opportunity when Romans’ goalkeeper Mziyanda Mabiza parried the ball over the poles. Comrades broke the deadlock when Amaqabane star player Xolela Mentor Ntsundwana released a rocket that beat Mabiza. Romans had at one stage an easy opportunity to bury opposition when their skipper Ntsikelelo Norushu efforts went wide with Comrades’ goalkeeper Melikhaya Busakwe well beaten.

Mabiza became a hero of the day when he saved a penalty of Vuyani Raul Mtanga. Be-

fore the first stanza came to an end AmaRoma piled more pressure on Comrades. With just seconds left before the break AmaRoma defender Thembani Booi headed home a spectacular equalising goal.

In the second stanza both goalkeepers pulled brilliant saves. The game was decided on penalties with Comrades winning the lottery. Comrades were awarded a floating trophy and gold medals while AmaRoma settled for a runners’-up trophy plus silver medals.

After the game Comrades’ Head Coach Mike Mlamla had this to say, “ I am very happy with the victory. We were quite aware that Young Romans were going to give us a tough game. Our strategy was to stick to the game plan. Our players were highly awesome because they emerged as victors.

“Good cooperation and discipline also paid dividends towards our victory. I am very relieved. I want to thank all the players, the supporters and club management as well as the parents of these players.”

Celtics dim the Stars

Zwide Celtics U/13 Team drubbed Shooting Stars 5-1.

HUNDREDS of the youngsters gathered at Gal City Grounds to watch ZWIFA Junior League sides locking horn with each other on Saturday.

Zwide Celtics who were brimming with confidence gave their supporters a victory when they thumped Shooting Stars 5-1 in the U/13 Division.

Celtics took the game to Stars who appeared to have dimmed. Everton Aces went 6-4 to Gal City.

Major Chiefs were held to a 2-2 draw by Zwide Pi-

rates in a closely contested game.

In the U/15 Division Morning Stars shared the 1-1 draw with Manchester City. Zwide Celtics played to a 2-2 spoils with Zwide Pirates. Mighty Heroes were taken to the cleaners when they were thrashed 5-0 by Manchester City.

Sophakama supporters were taken aback after their side was drubbed 5-0
