Chaos as schools protest hits the streets

Bonisile Gqamane, the Chief of the Tshawe clan of AmaGqunukhwebe aseCacadu “Aah Zwelimlindile”, told Indaba Express that the lure of money got the better of him.

Gqamane found the courage to stop gambling before it was too late and now supports Zwide resident Sipho Allah’s attempts to get a support group off the ground.

“I shared the idea with a number of people who promised to join the campaign as they realised how gambling addiction took away their honour and dignity. They promised to come and share their stories,” said Allah.

Three vehicles collide in Mati Street, New Brighton NCEBA DLADLA PORT Elizabeth police are investigating a case of reckless and negligent driving after four people were injured in a three vehicle pile-up in Mati Street, New Brighton.

Four passengers including the driver of one of the vehicles, a Quantum taxi, were injured in the accident that happened around 10am on Monday morning.

They were rushed to local hospitals, according to Port Elizabeth police spokesperson Warrant Officer Dumile Gwavu.

Gwavu said the accident happened when one taxi collided with another when trying to overtake a third taxi.

The third taxi then piled into the two taxis.

“The taxi driver, two female passengers and a young male passenger were injured,” said Gwavu. He added that the roadworthiness of the taxis would be scrutinised as part of the accident investigation.

‘No free pass for officials’ LIZEKA TANDWA Speculation is rife that Municipal Chief Whip Litho Suka will be reading out a complete forensic investigation report as he has called a special meeting with all parties’ whips today.

According to well placed sources, Suka has summoned party leaders today to deliberate and deliver detailed findings on the crack-down by a task team which may see municipal officials given the boot.

In the South African Local Government Association (SALGA) press briefing on July 22, Mayor Danny Jordaan said he expected the entire forensic report commissioned by national treasury on the municipality to be completed by the end of July.

“We did indicate to council that as soon as we receive the report we will table it before council.”

Suka earlier said council should expect further suspensions as the security services investigation was almost completed.

“When I spoke here at the last council meeting, I called on corruption to be dealt with, without fear or favour.

“I am therefore very happy to see that steps are being taken to address the problem. We expect the security services also to conclude its investigation and charge those who are suspected of wrongdoing.

People who are accused must be exposed and charged,” he ended.

Two arrested for possession of illegal firearm and ammunition

VALUABLE community information led to the arrest of two suspects aged 25 and 54 allegedly found in possession of an illegal firearm and ammunition in Uitenhage.

Uitenhage police spokesperson Warrant Officer Basil Seekoei said the two were arrested on Monday and a 9mm pistol with 7 rounds of ammunition was recovered at North Street, Uitenhage.

IN 1998 he was just a “skinny white boy” living in a Port Elizabeth township, but today Jacob Lief is investing millions of rands every year to change the lives of impoverished youth in the Bay. Lief, the co-creator of the Ubuntu Education

Fund in Zwide, discovered his passion for helping township children shortly after meeting Malizole “Banks” Gwaxula at the age of 19 years. Gwaxula, who was a science teacher at a township school, offered him a job at his school and let Lief live with his family for five months.

“That was the first time I understood what ubuntu meant,” Lief said at the launch of his book ‘I am because you are’ last week. The book chronicles his journey with Gwaxula and the 17 years it took to build the multimillion rand foundation.

“The whole township community built Ubuntu with us. It wasn’t just one man’s journey to change the world, but it all started at a tavern in New Brighton, when a stranger offered me a job and a place to stay.

“Years later, I asked Banks why he did that, and his answer was simple: we looked different but we were both human, and this made us brothers.”

Seventeen years later, they are still going strong. “Ubuntu believes in helping children from cradle to career, working to keep pregnant women healthy and helping to raise the children until they graduate from university.

We want to give children everything they deserve – and they deserve everything.”

Banks said his greatest pride was being able to help youth graduate with tertiary degrees. “We have produced graduates in the true sense of the word. Blind, semi-blind benefit Namhla is a baking queen in Mandela Month NCEBA DLADLA

NCEBA DLADLA NELSON Mandela’s spirit of giving continued unabated last week, with Zonke SPAR delivering wool, beads, knitting and crocheting material to the blind and semi-blind members of the NU9 Library in Motherwell last Wednesday.

“Since the government made a ruling that the blind and semi-blind members of the public should join the mini-labs (built inside the main library) to read books through braille and daisy machines as well as do information technology advancement courses, we have a number people who have decided on doing more skills upgrading at our weekly meetings,” Nelson Mandela Bay employee Phumza Macingwana said.

According to Macingwana, though the group found joy in the library work they did,

they also wanted to do handwork like knitting, beadwork and crocheting for their group’s sustainability, but obviously lacked funding.

“That’s where we came in. We decided to spend our 67 minutes for Mandela at the library to sponsor members of the library with the equipment they wanted,” Zonke SPAR’s Mercy Kula said, adding that they had not been able to make it on July 18 because the group met on Wednesdays.

“In fact, we did it because it is still Mandela Month,” Kula said. They had been pleased also to find Zanyiwe Classen, who was prepared to train the group in their chosen fields of beadwork, knitting and crocheting.

“I was trained to do beadwork and knitting

by Nolitha Qangule in 2005. I am now at the stage where I train others,” said Classen, who also has a child in the group.

Scarves, soup warm up Mandela Day NCEBA DLADLA THE pupils of Lamani Primary School in New Brighton were the lucky recipients of a good gesture by the police last Friday.

New Brighton and Humewood police visited the little ones and showered 40 of them with scarves and all the pupils with bread and hot soup to beat a chilly winter day.

“We indentified this school after handling a case that was reported here and found both members of staff and children very friendly with the police,” said Colonel Neo Wolmarans of the New Brighton police station.

He said Humewood policewomen had made the warm black scarves that were given to those Grade R and Grade 1 pupils present on the day, while New Brighton police had contributed for the bread and soup.

And if Namhla Bukani could have things her way, KwaNobuhle would have an eatery specialising in baking and doing platters for the people’s big events.

The owner of Le Nubians Events and Management Company, Bukani (33) of Nyiki Street, specialises in catering, wedding and events planning, decor and hiring services.

“Le Nubians was registered in 2011, but started working last year,” said Bukani, blaming a lack of start-up capital and marketing as some of the reasons for starting late.

If funds become available, Bukani will buy materials like stoves, pans, pots and decor equipment. She would “hire more women who like cooking like me and KwaNobuhle township events will never be the same,” a confident Bukani said.

“A lot of people in the township have to travel to town for their event-planning and catering needs. My plan is to provide those services right on their doorstep,” she said.

This would give her an opportunity to employ some of the unemployed young people, especially girls, who were not at school or in employment.

Bukani, who studied travel and tourism at Varsity College and qualified with a conference, exhibition and events management diploma, said she had loved cooking, and especially baking, while growing up.

She spent some of her formative years working before she studied and qualified at Damelin College in what she ultimately loved.

“I want people to taste my platters. I am sure they would come back and ask for more,” she said.

KwaNobuhle’s Dark Okes ready for fame and fortune NCEBA DLADLA THE KwaNobuhle music group known as the Dark Okes seem to be taking the music world by storm with the release of their latest single, “Reja Bana”, which they are now promoting.

The Dark Okes, Siyabulela Bolokoqoshe, Ayanda Nxakala and Luvuyo Vena, popularly known as Skelem, Action and L’Vee respectively, launched their video at the Tshisa Nyama, known as KwaNo’s Meat Corner, last Friday.

“The video launch was a resounding success. People came in large numbers despite the cold and wet weather,” said group leader Bolokoqoshe.

The trio say that with their Diski music offering, a mixture of hip-hop, kwaito and house, they are filling a gap in the industry.

They released an EP, When days are dark,last year. They think, however, that the single will catapult them to stardom.

The Dark Okes had performed the single at Umhlobo Wenene FM after it was voted in by listeners to be play-listed, Nxakala revealed proudly, adding that they thought about the fans every time they put pen to paper, mixing and arranging beats.

“Our music is loved by many, including our fan base, which is mostly women. Music lovers, especially girls, call for more wherever we perform,” said Bolokoqoshe.

The group was formed last year, but the group members say they have been in the music business for quite a while now.

They have performed before big crowds at events like the Nelson Mandela Bay Splash Festival, Easter Weekend, June 16 and at events that they themselves organised in the township.

As for fame, The Dark Okes say they can handle it, since they’ve been around the music industry for a while now.

Mali is Sedgwick’s Draughts League winner

Club apologises for Tourney last minute venue change

PORT Elizabeth’s Mphumzi Mali never dreamt that a simple board game would lead to fame and money, but he has the trophy and the prize money to prove it.

Mali of Hlawula Street in New Brighton has won Sedgwick’s Draughts League Title and R50 000 in prize-money when he beat Vuyani Mazibuko of Mthatha at the Nangoza Jebe Community Hall in the grand finale.

And what a journey it was to the final - Mali described it as a highly competitive league pitting the great draught players in the Eastern Cape against each other.

“It’s a great achievement for me, considering the great opposition I had to face on the way to winning the league championship,” said Mali who will be doing renovations to his home with his money, then spoil himself a bit.

He considers Motherwell, Port Elizabeth’s Melikhaya Nonyukela as one of his toughest opponents.

“He was a bit tricky,” said Mali who started the game at 18 years of age in the 1990s under the guidance of great players of yore like Mzi-kabawo Hontoti and the late Monde Ngesi.

According to Mali, when they played draughts in the past, they were doing it for fun, without thinking that it would pay one day..

“We loved it because it kept us doing something positive, away from crime and drugs. It helped sharpen our minds and we recommend it as a mind sport for school children especially those doing mathematics,” said Mali.

At the time, he said, they struggled to get books and information on draughts.

“Today, however, with the advent of Google, everything is available.”

And what’s next? “I’d like to get sponsorship and continue playing the game against overseas opponents. There are international draughts leagues that can take one overseas. I’d like to take my game internationally, that’s my next step.” – NCEBA DLADLA

NCEBA DLADLA THUBALETHU Boxing Club Manager Mazizi Vumazonke has apologised for a last minute venue change of a boxing tournament, initially scheduled to take place at Sizakele Konzi Community Hall, KwaNobuhle to Masibambane Hostel, Khayelitsha.

“We apologise but would like to state that we made a booking three weeks ago and contacted the municipal office for a follow up,” said Vumazonke, adding that it seemed that Nelson Mandela Bay Amateur Boxing Organisation’s clubs were faced with a serious problem of finding venues for their tournaments.

About 13 Nelson Mandela Bay Clubs and one from the Sundays River Valley Local Municipality in Kirkwood participated and exciting bouts were provided.

Meanwhile, KwaNobuhle’s professional boxer Lonwabo “Dancing Shoes” Roboshi lost in his bid to wrestle the vacant South African Mini-flyweight Championship from Ali Mangcotywa of Duncan Village, East London when the duo locked horns in a fight for the title in East London’s International Convention Centre (ICC) last Friday.

Roboshi was stopped in the 8th of their 12-round scheduled bout.

This leaves Nelson Mandela Bay without the SA champion since 2003. Nomampondomise “Lily” Xotyeni is the only SA Female Junior Lightweight champion.

Waiting in the wings and hoping to finally break the ice and give the metro the crown she had long been longing for is Eastern Cape Super Middleweight champion Makhosonke Zwengu.

Zwengu of KwaNobuhle is scheduled to challenge for the national title early next month.

Gauteng runners dominate race held at Pollok Beach SELBY MADIKANE CHILLY wet weather conditions did not deter hundreds of road runners from taking part in Jumbo SA Half Marathon Championships that took place at Pollok Beach on Saturday.

Central Gauteng Athletics (CGA) runners dominated the field in both the senior men’s and senior women’s divisions. Lucky Mohale who was in good form was the first runner to finish the race in a time of 1:02:06 and was followed by his club-mate Stephen Mokoka in second place. Eastern Province Athletics’ Lusapho April came in third. Mohale cashed in R35 000 for his first place. “I am feeling absolutely happy. Before the race I did not expect this kind of performance at all. I am very thrilled and I was hoping to finish in the

10th position because there were great runners in the race. I worked very hard and the weather conditions helped me a lot. I want to give credit to Stephen because he gave me very tough competition,” said Mohale.

CGA’s twins, Lebo and Lebohang Phalula came first and second respectively in the senior womens’ race, with their club-mate Cornelia Joubert finishing third. Lebo Phalula who finished the race in 1: 54:08, also claimed the first prize of R35 000.

“I am happy with this win and with the way I performed. I love running in Port Elizabeth.

The conditions here really suit me and I always managed to do my best personal time.

This win has encouraged me and it makes me feel over the moon. I am motivated and I hope I will do better in the future,” Phalula said after the race.
