Chaos as schools protest hits the streets

The biggest protest action in Port Elizabeth’s Northern areas since 1990 caused massive chaos and disruption on Monday. Public transport was halted and workers forced to stay home in solidarity with upset parents who protested crippling teacher shortages and other problems at their children’s schools. Education MEC Mandla Makupula met principals yesterday to find solutions.

Gambling addiction tackled NCEBA DLADLA

A

SOON TO BE crowned Xhosa chief has come clean on his gambling addiction.

Bonisile Gqamane, the Chief of the Tshawe clan of AmaGqunukhwebe aseCacadu “Aah Zwelimlindile”, told Indaba Express that the lure of money got the better of him. “I went to gambling because I wanted money. People go to gamble because of the need for mon-

ey. You dare the little that you have for the lot that you don’t have. There is this hope, every time you play, that you could strike it rich. It goes on and on, until you find yourself with nothing!” Gqamane found the courage to stop gambling before it was too late and now supports Zwide resident Sipho Allah’s attempts to get a support group off the ground. Allah is the director of Sijik’izinto Gambling Awareness Campaign, a not-for-profit organisation which launches in New Brighton this com-

ing Monday. A former gambling addict himself, Allah said

‘There is this hope, every time you play, that you could strike it rich. It goes on and on, until you find yourself with nothing!’ BONISILE GQAMANE

he simply could not watch the destruction that gambling addiction had on the community carry on unabated. “I shared the idea with a number of people who promised to join the campaign as they realised how gambling addiction took away their honour and dignity. They promised to come and share their stories,” said Allah. The first meeting, to be held in the Nangoza Jebe Hall in New Brighton will feature people who bring hope against the spiral of addiction.
