AYOR Danny Jordaan is expected to hit back at his detractors today as he delivers his own review on his 100 days in office.

Jordaan was mum last week as opposition parties delivered punches on his leadership during his first 100 days as Nelson Mandela Bay mayor.

Jordaan’s Chief of Staff, Mlungisi Ncame, said today (Wednesday, September 9) Jordaan would finally respond to his critics namely DA mayoral candidate Athol Trollip, who said Jordaan’s time in office was filled with broken promises.

Trollip held a press conference last week Friday to review Jordaan’s key performance indicators on his first 100 days as Mayor.

Jordaan to review his first 100 days in office Continued from page 1 Trollip announced during his press conference last week that an additional 19 charges are currently being prepared by the metro against Mbambisa.

“It’s quite unprecedented that a municipality would present a document with 17 charges against a municipal manager to all the political parties including the DA before a (council) meeting and then as the meeting is about to start, to ask for the document with the charges to be given back only to inform the council that deputy mayor Bicks Ndoni has been asked to negotiate a settlement with a person who minutes before had been charged. I hear that there are another 19 charges that are also being prepared against Mbambisa,” said Trollip.

Trollip said the DA does not believe that Jordaan is doing anything to eradicate corruption as Jordaan has been seen in the company of allegedly suspended communications boss Roland Williams.

“Apparently Williams has been suspended again but there is no confirmation of that. The only thing we do know is that he was seen laughing and in very jovial company with the mayor in the last weekend which doesn’t speak to the fact that he has been suspended for very serious misdemeanours,” added Trollip.

Trollip said, “Instead of rooting out corruption, Jordaan has protected and befriended Williams who unlawfully and improperly dished out tenders, bungled contracts and took paid trips to other provinces with municipal tender bidders.

“Instead of cutting costs on non-core expenditure, Jordaan decided to cut ‘special skills allowances’ to critical officials in the electricity and water directorates, causing a wildcat strike and power outages in vast areas of the North, and water cut offs for over a week,” he added.

To date three directors have been sus-

pended, namely Lindile Petuna, Mod Ndoyana, and Roland Williams. IPTS boss Mhleli Tshamase resigned after being suspended, and municipal managers Nadia Gerwel, Isaac Nokele, Carle Ritter Erasmus and Basil de Lange have also been suspended.

UDM local leader Mongameli Bobani said the suspensions without any other action would bring chaos to the metro.

“You find that all these people are ANC deployees and we have warned that bringing political deployees to fill municipal roles is disastrous and this is being proven.

“There is a dark cloud hanging over Jordaan with the FIFA scandal and the metro is going for a disclaimer not even for a qualified audit. Things are worse than ever, to appoint a new municipal manager six months before the elections. Where does that put us? We are indeed going into a black day in the metro with Jordaan as its leader,” said Bobani.

“No municipal managers have completed their term of office since we became a metro. What that means is that the people of the metro have to pay for incompetent administrators who cannot finish their job and not one of them has been called to account.

“And what’s more we are paying double because when you give someone a golden handshake and replace them with another you are paying the person coming in and the person going out,” ended Trollip.

Ncame said Trollip’s review was so devoid of substance that it was not worth responding to. “The scandals he is talking about only exist in his head.

“For instance, we all know that the Mayor has spent every day attending to his official duties in the Metro but Trollip still perpetuates the tired myth that he is a part time Mayor. We will give a detailed account of the Executive Mayor’s first 100 days on Wednesday (today),” said Ncame.

THE DA is jumping the gun and prematurely predicting council decisions, said Danny Jordaan’s chief of staff, Mlungisi Ncame.

Ncame was referring to the DA’s warning that they would fight tooth and nail to prevent the metro’s mass sale of the buses of the controversial public transport system (IPTS).

A proposal to sell the unused buses of the IPTS to other metros was skipped during a council meeting last week, but still led to fiery debate.

Ncame said the Municipality was looking at three different options which would be investigated by the roads and public works standing committee.

These options include: • Retain the IPTS in its current form; • Drop the project all together; • Modify the project with reduced cost.

“All these options will be investigated and the standing committee will be seeking advice from other metros who have succeeded with their public transport programmes and then, a report will be tabled in council,” said Ncame.

Ncame said he found it strange that the DA would challenge its own decisions in council.

“The DA is part of council and this decision will be taken by council. I find it strange that the DA would challenge its own decisions,” said Ncame.

During a council meeting on August 24, DA councillor Retief Odendaal said the proposal (to sell the buses) was totally unacceptable. “We promised a reliable bus service to the metro, and if we sell the buses we have spent R2,5 billion in vain. It would be sad to have to sell the buses because we cannot find solutions ourselves,” said Odendaal.

He said the DA would oppose the proposal.

“The ANC needs only one voting process in council to get rid of the system and buses, but the DA will put forward a motion to integrate the IPTS service and the metro’s taxi services. The motion will put taxi owners in charge of licensing of vehicles rather than drivers,” Odendaal added.

In contrast, the local ratepayers association is in favour of the buses being sold to recoup as much money as possible and start from scratch with a public transport system.

Kobus Gerber from the ratepayers association said he didn’t think selling the buses would be a bad idea.

“There is no other alternative since this system will never work in the Bay,” he said.

Last month, in his capacity as vice chairmain of AfriForum, he demanded nearly R6 million in IPTS expenses be paid back by the municipal manager, Mpilo Mbambisa.

“It could be the best option: to get back money from the contractors, sell the buses and repair the roads. Then the metro can start from scratch and come up with a new plan,” said Gerber.

Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder Day takes sobering look at destructive facts REPORTER THERE’S a condition that doesn’t discriminate against race, faith, politics, status or designation, nor does it hint towards the existence of a cure. It seems there’s only one thing it firmly stands by – the fact that it is 100% preventable.

Foetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) can be the lifelong, incurable burden of a child born from any mother as a result of the use – not necessarily abuse – of alcohol during pregnancy.

To raise awareness about FASD and foetal alcohol syndrome (FAS), the most severe of these disorders, September 9 was declared International FASD day in 1999 and has since been commemorated around the globe.

“There are still many myths around FASD. Some people still believe, for instance, that a woman must be an alcoholic to give birth to

a child with FASD. The truth is, however, that no amount of alcohol is safe during pregnancy,” said FARR chief executive Leana Olivier.

FAS is a mental disability – the most severe of the foetal alcohol spectrum disorders. In this case the damage to the unborn child is permanent and cannot be reversed, Olivier explained.

“A child with FAS can suffer from various defects, apart from intellectual deficits. Apart from damage to the eyes, ears and heart, this may also include brain damage, which results in lifelong problems such as learning disabilities, interpersonal relationship problems, developmental disabilities such as fine motor development, coordination, arithmetic and cause and effect reasoning. In addition, most of these children have attention and hyperactivity problems,” she said.

FARR has completed nine studies in four provinces recording the highest reported FAS rates in the world.

In some areas the FAS prevalence rate is as high as 18%. The Department of Health estimates the average FAS prevalence in South Africa at 6%.

“Compared with the next highest rate in the world, namely 1% in the USA, this rate is alarmingly high. An estimated 3 million South African children are born with FAS every year,” said FARR founder Prof. Denis Viljoen.

Currently FARR runs research, awareness and prevention projects in the West Coast, Wolseley, Port Elizabeth, De Aar, Upington and the Renosterberg area. As part of these projects community members, health professionals, social workers and educators are trained to raise awareness about and assist in the prevention of FASD in their communities.

“A child born with FAS has an intellectual disability, learning and psycho-social challenges for the rest of its life. This epidemic is 100% preventable,” said Viljoen.

Local FASD study: )In 2012, the Eastern Cape Liquor Board (ECLB) approached the Foundation for Alcohol Related Research (FARR), with a request to undertake a Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) Prevalence Study in Bethelsdorp, north of Port Elizabeth in the Eastern Cape.

The study would be the first of its kind in the province. )The first phase of the study was undertaken late in 2013, and involved Medical Examinations of children at 14 primary schools in Bethelsdorp and Helenvale - this phase was completed in May this year. The next phase is focused on Awareness and Prevention outlined in the Healthy Mother Healthy Baby (HMHB) Programme. This phase will be launched today, which is also International FASD Awareness day. )Healthy Mother Healthy Baby is aimed at reducing the incidence of FASD by supporting healthier pregnancies, and in turn healthier FASD-free infants.

Community takes heed of Education Minister’s plea to read more NCEBA DLADLA YOUNG readers from KwaZakhele recently treated grandmothers to a book-reading.

Landezwa Luvuno’s Ilinge, Sunshine and Amazing Reading Clubs held their annual Reading Rag with gogos, who are members of the oldage club in Kwazakhele, benefiting from the reading skills of the 7- to 14-year-olds of the clubs.

“I work with the community youth to enhance their reading skills to supplement what they are doing in schools,” said Luvuno who believed that there was not enough book-reading in schools nowadays.

Luvuno teaches the children from Wards 18, 19 and 23 in Kwazakhele and with the help of the

GM South Africa Foundation and Nal’ ibali Reading Project she was offered a facilitator named Ntomboxolo Skenjana.

Skenjana says she takes the members of the reading clubs Luvuno organises and encourages them to read. “They read and are now well informed and empowered.”

The gogos agreed. “The children reminded us of the need to read. We sometimes forget and when they read for us they sharpen our minds because reading makes us think, “ said gogo Nomvuyo Nokwe (64).

“It is important for children to read especially their own language, isiXhosa. Most of us cannot see owing to old age and now our grandchildren read the instructions on the medication and how and when to take it,” another gogo said.

Wide reaction on chaining of ‘demon-possessed’ girl NCEBA DLADLA THERE has been much reaction to a recent Indaba report about a 13-year-old girl chained against her will in St John’s Church in NU5 Motherwell in order to “save her from demons”.

The girl, who was reportedly sent by her mother to the church, was saved by the police from the ordeal.

Indaba also heard how Lundi Jela had fled from the church earlier after he was allegedly chained to a wrecked bakkie next to the church, also in an attempt to cast out demons.

The church leader was reportedly in Leso-

tho during this incident. Police have opened a case of kidnapping for investigation.

“This is a common trend here. Demonpossessed people are chained during the process of exorcism,” said a Motherwell woman, who did not want her name mentioned.

“Demon-possessed people can be very dangerous. Remember, many of the people attending this church are women,” said the woman.

“My grandson used to show demonic behaviour until I took him to the church to be cleansed. He is a sweet child now,” the woman said, adding that people went to the church of their own volition.

When Indaba visited the church again

last week, the church leader was still not present. We left contact details and asked him to respond to our questions. He has not done so.

Other congregants told Indaba that the church is visited on Wednesdays and Thursdays by many people who want intsebenzo (cleansing), while church services are held every day.

“Some people stay here, while others come only on the days of intsebenzo,” one woman said. ) Following the recent widespread news of a Gauteng pastor who allegedly forced congregants to eat snakes, and another telling his congregation to eat grass, the South Africa Council of Churches has called for the protection of human rights of people attending churches against incidents such as that of Pastor Penuel Mnguni who allegedly jumps on congregants and makes them eat snakes. ) An independent church leader, Mbuzeni Makanda, said mainline churches could not be expected to understand and give blessing to what the pentecostal churches were doing. He said even though they were all Christians, their ways of operation were different.

“We cast out demons and will use anything at our disposal to do it to glorify God because the world and everything in it belongs to God,” he said.

Sassa celebrates making a difference for vulnerable people NCEBA DLADLA THE Eastern Cape leadership of the South African Social Security Services Agency (Sassa), which turns 10 next year, said they were satisfied with the work they had done so far.

Sassa was created by the government to bring social relief through grants such as those for child support, older persons, disability, care dependency, foster care and grant-in-aid, among others, to millions of deserving people living below the poverty line, most of which are children.

Speaking at a media briefing about the role Sassa was playing in helping the poor and vulnerable, Sassa spokesperson Kgomoco Diseko said they had managed to decrease the turnaround time in the provision of Sassa cards to deserving beneficiaries to two-and-a-half days .

“More than 16 million South Africans receive social grants,” he said.

The majority of these were children, but there were many more elderly people who were not

eligible for grants but were living on the Social Relief of Distress Fund.

Diseko said it was misinformation by some people, especially politicians, that this grant was issued to the poor and vulnerable ahead of elections.

This included the perception that social grants created a dependency syndrome. He said people needed to go to the pay-points to see the difference the grants were making.

There were, however, unscrupulous individuals and syndicates who were hell-bent on defrauding the system, said Mark Rasmussen, General Manager: Grant Administration.

“They give out loans and insurance policies to people with Sassa cards and pretend they are for Sassa. We do not offer any policies to people. We can’t offer loans to people either.

It is not our mandate,” he said.

“People must be careful of buying things online as they are not affordable and they should not take loans as this could create a vicious cycle that they would find difficult to quit,” he said.

PEFM celebrates birthday with big increase in listeners NCEBA DLADLA PEFM, a Costwold- based Christian Community Radio Station, will be celebrating three years of operation on September 19.

The huge birthday celebration of the station, tuned in at 87.6 FM, will include exciting news of their increase in listenership according to the latest Community Radio Listening (RAMS) figures.

An overjoyed station manager Pastor Ronnie Johnson said, “The latest RAMS released on August 26 shows that PEFM listeners soared to a whopping 38 000 over a seven-day period.”

According to Pastor Ronnie, as Johnson is affectionately known, about this time last year their listenership stood at a mere 9 000.

The success, he explained, was due to the fact that they (at PEFM) had the community at heart.

“We strive to serve our listeners with the best of Christian content and music,” said Pastor Ronnie, adding that he wanted to thank every presenter of the station who tirelessly offered his or her time to serve the city and live stream audience across the world - to give PEFM 400% growth in more than one year.

Some of the station’s listeners have also commented on social media to acknowledge this recent success.

It is here, in the night life, where Darryl Loxton (22) better known as “DJ Darryl”, has made a name for himself. Born and bred in the Northern Areas of PE, Loxton always knew that music was his calling.

“My family is a very music-orientated one and from a young age I was the one they called on to connect the sound equipment and select songs to play.”

It is here, among his family, where Loxton first became known as a DJ. The young disc jockey then went on to play for bigger crowds and started playing in under-18 clubs, before he left for the UAE (United Arab Emirates), at the age of 17.

While in the UAE, he continued to cultivate his music abilities and stayed in contact with long term friend, Vaughn Cunningham.

Upon his return to South Africa in 2013, Cunningham and Loxton put plans into motion to launch their very own recording company, Darkmello Recordings.

With Cunningham overseeing the books and Loxton overseeing the decks, the music duo have been able to work well together for the last two years, as each has contributed his strength to enhance their brand. Together, they have been able to produce and distribute music at its different levels to its different audiences.

Loxton, who is studying a Composition and Music Production course, feels that the working relationship and long-time friendship he and Cunningham share, is a recipe for success in their industry.

Loxton has also been in various local and national DJ competitions, and says that one of the highlights of his career is having his music selected by a recording company in Miami, USA, for production.

“I have been invited to play in Cape Town clubs on many occasions, but receiving international recognition for my music has been one of the biggest highlights of my career,” said the enthusiastic DJ. To make his sound unique, Loxton incorporates the piano into a lot of his music. “I was never taught to play; I learned by ear, and the chords on the piano contribute a higher level of musicality to my tracks.”

Although producing music lies close to Loxton’s heart, he feels that playing his music is just as important, as it is the perfect way for him to do market research. The instantaneous response from the crowd is what Loxton deems most rewarding and emphasises that this is what he strives for mostto keep any crowd entertained.

“When I play the music I have produced to a crowd, I have the advantage over the other DJs, because I have a track that none of them have and that sets me apart,” he said.

The music he produces, which often includes the vocal talents of local artists, has also allowed him to provide guidance to others who want to “make it” in the music industry. The music Loxton produces is widely available on the internet and also receives a lot of air play on local radio stations.

However, Loxton does not see himself slowing down his music career yet. When asked about the future of his music ventures, he said that for him the most important thing was expanding his brand.

“My music is my brand and I don’t just want to make an impression on a crowd for one night. I want to make an impression that will last.”

Vera Qwesha tells of journey from grass to grace NCEBA DLADLA VERA Qwesha has had a life that could be portrayed in a blockbuster movie.

In fact, the Kwazakhele-born Vera, (40) who grew up in Tsomo, Transkei, is the subject of a documentary produced by SABC television.

This daughter of a single mother and domestic worker, obtained a bachelor’s degree in politics from the University of Port Elizabeth (now the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University).

But her life took a turn for the worse when she was lured by friends to leave home and start a fake life of prostitution, which led to drug addiction that could have taken her life in a foreign land.

She said she managed, through the grace of God, to regain control of her life and decided to write a book, My Journey, From Grass to Grace, to warn young minds to carry their family values through life, and not to rush for stardom and money - selling their souls in the process.

As a motivational speaker with the Department of Social Development, Vera is travelling all over South Africa to spread her positive message to the youth seeking fame and fortune.

Based in Durban these days, she visited Port Elizabeth last week.

“I grew up in the Transkei with my siblings while my mother was in the city - Port Elizabeth,” Vera said.

As children they had always wanted to see the city lights as they heard people portraying townships as heavenly.

“But when our mother gave us a chance to come to PE, I was dismayed by the poverty I saw. She was living in a shack in Kwazakhele where there was no water, proper sanitation or lights. Being the firstborn, I knew I had to be educated in order to change things around in the family,” she said.

In Port Elizabeth, Vera met and dated a young man from a wealthy family.

She said the man had abused her and used to beat her just for greeting another man. He once beat her so badly that she was in a wheelchair for three months.

“I had to leave him. We had a child together and were about to be married when I broke the engagement,” Vera said, adding that the man had not wanted to be responsible for their child.

Choral festival promises to be world-class

THE much-anticipated biennial Kuesta University Choral Festival is being hosted by Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) on September 11 and 12.

Author and motivational speaker Vera Qwesha, formerly from Port Elizabeth, tells her life story in her book, “My Journey: From Grass to Grace”.

This promises to be a noteworthy weekend with world-class performances by four South African University choirs - the University of Johannesburg Choir, TUKS Camerata Choir, Stellenbosch University Choir and the NMMU Choir.

The weekend will consist of three concerts. The first will take place on 11 September in NMMU’s South Campus Auditorium at 1pm. Tickets are R60 for adults and R30 for students and pensioners.

The second concert also takes place on 11 September at the Summerstrand Dutch Reformed

Church, starting at 6pm, with tickets at R60 for adults and R30 for students and pensioners.

The gala concert will be held at the Feather Market Centre on September 12 at 4pm. Tickets are R85 for adults and R45 for students and pensioners.

“Drugs - cocaine, heroine, rock, tik are so expensive. I would spend up to R3 000 a day on drugs and liquor. They affected my body badly. I needed help.”

Vera says she is thankful to the leader and founder of Jesus’ Dominion International Church, Prophet Tim Omotoso, who helped her find Jesus, forgiveness and the reason to live a productive life.

EC Junior Children’s Choir concert delights audience THE Eastern Cape Junior Children’s Choir Prestige Concert offered in collaboration with the EC Children’s Choir and the EC Youth Choir at the Dutch Reformed Church (DRC) in Summerstrand on Friday was a resounding success, said accompanist Lilian Zeelie.

“This is an annual event held between the three regional choirs at this church because of its acoustics,” said Choir Director Hanlie Young.

The EC Junior Children’s

Choir hosted this year’s event.

The choir is made up of 6-11 yearolds who sing just like their 12-15 year-old brothers in the EC Children’s Choir and sisters as well as the 16 year-olds and upwards who belong to the EC Youth Choir.

Established in 1977, the EC Youth Choir is under the direction of educator Petrus Meyer.

Children were auditioned to belong to these choirs and choristers were expected to make at least 80 per cent of attendance at rehearsals, said Zeelie.

“We want to see commitment from our choristers,” said Zeelie who assists Young in the grooming of the musical repertoire of the young choristers on a weekly basis of practice.

The EC Children’s Choir under the capable hands of Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University’s (NNMU) Lionel van Zyl assisted by accompanist and répétitrice Westering High School Music teacher Amanda Engelbrecht.

Supporters club appeals for community support SELBY MADIKANE MOTHERWELL RFC supporters club has appealed to members of the community to join hands with them in their effort to revive the sport of rugby in Motherwell Township.

According to the club’s spokesperson, Sindaphi Windvoél, their club was formed by former Motherwell RFC players.

Windvoél said that their principal objective was to render assistance to their players who hailed from poor backgrounds.

“We held talks with the club executive committee members about forming the supporters club. We unpacked everything to our executive committee about our vision in forming the supporters club. I am happy to say that

our club executive committee gave us the green light to realise our dream.”

Windvoéll added, “At our club lots of youth hail from very poor backgrounds. We have seen that some players experience some serious problems. We felt that we could not rest on our laurels. What touches us is to see the players who have no rugby boots and other playing apparel that they are supposed to buy.

We want to help these players so that no one would be able to see that they come from indigent homes.

“We also feel that the sport of rugby should be revived in Motherwell. All in all the youth will be motivated to play for the club and regard it as their home”.

ZWIFA holds its annual awards at City hall SELBY MADIKANE ZWIDE Football Association (ZWIFA) honoured outstanding teams and individuals for their performances during the past season of the ZWIFA Ntando Tours and Transport Premier League during a glittering function that was held at City Hall on Sunday evening.

SAFA Nelson Mandela Bay President Monde Mhletywa, who was the guest speaker, highlighted that ZWIFA clubs should cooperate with their executive committee so that their dreams could become a reality.

Mhletywa also urged that ZWIFA keep the communication lines open between them and Ntando Tours and Transport.

Mhletywa lauded the sponsors for uplifting the standard of less fortunate communities.

ZWIFA President Mzikayise Chippa Quntu also thanked the sponsors for developing sport at grassroots level.

Quntu said, “I am overwhelmed and I thank Ntando Tours and Transport for coming to our rescue. This sponsor has done a lot for us.

“We had no financial muscle but Ntando Tours and Transport has changed our lives.

Mac Man vows to beat Liebenberg and bring SA title home NCEBA DLADLA KWANOBUHLE’s Makhosandile Zwengu, the Eastern Cape Super Middleweight champion, will face Ryno Liebenberg of Gauteng in a fight for the vacant South African Light Heavyweight title over 12 rounds at Caesar’s Palace, Kempton Park, Johannesburg on Saturday 19 September.

The fight is presented by Rodney Berman’s Golden Gloves Production (GGP). It will also feature, in the main bout, the WBA and IBO Mini-flyweight championship fight between defending champion Hekkie “The Hexecutioner” Budler of Gauteng and his Eastern Cape challenger, Simphiwe Khonco over 12 rounds.

YOUNG Ideas defender Willie Siyabulela Ngqiyaza scored from a penalty mark in their Motherwell Football Association (MOFA) Mayoral Cup Last 16 game against Camper United at Motherwell NU 9 Stadium on Sunday.

Camper started the game in high spirits but their strikers failed to deliver the good results.

CONTINENTAL Express were ruthless when they demolished Shooting Stars 8-0 in their SAFA Nelson Mandela Bay Womens’ Regional League clash at Gal Ground on Saturday.

Express did not give the home side a breathing space as they kept them in their own territory for the entire first half.

Express forwards failed to convert their

chances on numerous occasions. Express defender Noluthando Gojela scored a fortuitous goal with three minutes left before the break.

Silindokuhle Dyobi scored Express’ second goal in the last minute of the first half.

After this the flood gates seemed to have opened with Express striker Gojela banging in her second goal to put her side 3-0 ahead. Thandeka Gegesi scored her first goal increasing her side’s lead to 4-0.

Dyobi delivered a perfect pass to Gegesi who squeezed the ball into the back of the net beating the Shooting Stars goalkeeper and taking the score to 5-0. Dyobi finished her brace and took Express to a 6-0 lead. Gegesi scored her third goal and Sisanda Cele banged in Express’ eighth goal.

Bucks tame Bees in Mayoral Cup BUSH Bucks were on top of their game when they overcame gutsy Stinging Bees in their New Brighton Football Association (NEBFA) Mayoral Cup Last 16 games at New Brighton Oval Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Bucks provided a sterling performance while Bees did not rest on their laurels. The game was spectacular with the fans being kept on their feet.

Bucks broke the ice after Lonwabo Mtukwini scored a world class goal. Bucks came
