OTHERWELL residents from Wards 57 and 54 who say they are sick and tired of waiting for houses and are accusing some municipal officials of corruption are taking matters into their own hands as they don’t believe that the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality will ever deal with their housing needs.

Last Thursday evening a group of angry residents from Power line and NU29 went on the rampage and looted about three foreign residents’ shops before setting them alight. According to Motherwell Community Police Forum (CPF) Chairperson Nomawethu Jama, before that, the residents allegedly burnt a Shoprite delivery truck as well as a petrol truck, burnt tyres and closed roads including one to Uitenhage, stopped children from going to school and illegally occupied the flats earmarked for deserving residents on the housing delivery list. “Yes we did. We take responsibility for the public violence. It is our way of calling for municipal attention. We have been calling the executive mayor Danny Jordaan to come and listen to our complaints and he ignored us,” said resident Vulikhaya Pasiya. Continued on page 2
