OTHERWELL residents from Wards 57 and 54 who say they are sick and tired of waiting for houses and are accusing some municipal officials of corruption are taking matters into their own hands as they don’t believe that the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality will ever deal with their housing needs.

Last Thursday evening a group of angry residents from Power line and NU29 went on the rampage and looted about three foreign residents’ shops before setting them alight.

According to Motherwell Community Police Forum (CPF) Chairperson Nomawethu Jama, before that, the residents allegedly burnt a Shoprite delivery truck as well as a petrol truck, burnt tyres and closed roads including one to Uitenhage, stopped children from going to school and illegally occupied the flats earmarked for deserving residents on the housing delivery list.

“Yes we did. We take responsibility for the public violence. It is our way of calling for municipal attention. We have been calling the executive mayor Danny Jordaan to come and listen to our complaints and he ignored us,” said resident Vulikhaya Pasiya.

“There’s a lot of fraud going on here. We’ve got proof and the names of people involved in corrupt practices, but we choose to reveal them only when the mayor finally meets us. He must come and talk to us, this is serious stuff and not football,” said Pasiya to loud applause.

Residents said they took the duplexes (Ngendlovu) by force because they have noted something they wanted to discuss with the number one citizen. They also admitted to having received eviction letters but, “Asiyi ndawo” they said.

The group said they knew that foreign nationals were not involved.

They became soft targets because “the whole nation comes to a standstill when South Africans touch foreign nationals.”

Some of the residents have however, put their lives on the line and tried to protect the foreign nationals by

guarding their shops day and night.

Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Dumile Gwavu confirmed incidents of public violence and arson and said police were investigating.

“We have held meetings with the concerned residents and senior municipal officials to deal with their issues, but to no avail,” said Jama adding that they feared that the violence was spiralling out of control.

Municipal spokesperson Mthubanzi Mniki said illegal occupation of houses was unacceptable.

He said they were investigating housing waiting lists to identify problems and would soon put up a reconciled, complete and transparent list which would state clearly where people were on the waiting list.

“We’d also like to state that not all problems are addressed by the executive mayor personally. He delegates and decisions taken by the delegated official represented the views of the municipal council,” said Mniki.

He added, “We cannot accept the criminal activities taking place in the area. We urge police to take action when residents choose to mistake service delivery issues with crime.”

THERE are two things that Police Commissioner Riah Phiyega says her department is clear about - the need to curb the continuous killing of police and the escalating gang violence in the northern areas of Port Elizabeth.

Festival last Friday, Phiyega said they would do anything to secure a safe environment for their law enforcement officers.

“The killing of police is a huge problem. This is our major concern. We urge members of the community to report these incidents and ensure that perpetrators are arrested,” Phiyega said.

The provinces with the most police killings were Gauteng, the Western Cape and KwaZulu-Natal in that order, she said, adding that

16 policemen had lost their lives in the line of duty in Gauteng since the beginning of the year.

Eastern Cape Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Celiwe Binta said there had been two police killings in the province since April this year, one in Fort Beaufort in full uniform and the other in Mount Fletcher. The suspects in both cases had met the full might of the law.

In a press conference to welcome veteran ANC ward 30 leader Michael Ciko to the UDM, Mongameli Bobani said they were expecting over a thousand members, with 90% of those from the ANC, to walk over to the UDM before the month ended as negotiations were being conducted.

Bobani said the ANC members were mo-ving to the UDM owing to

the conditions they had endured in the ANC. “We are expecting thousands to move to the UDM in no time and they want a change just like Ciko.

Over 90% of the members will be moving from the ANC, some from the DA. This Heritage Month will be a month for the UDM. It will be a nice heritage for the UDM. By the end of Heritage Month we will have welcomed the thousands we talk about,” said Bobani.

Bobani said he could not name names, but said some of the members would be part of the big fish of the local ANC. Ciko, who said he was neglected by the ANC, had been a member of

the ANC for over 25 years having served as a marshal in his youth, and a deputy secretary of ward 30 branch under councillor Andile Mfunda and late councillor Mike Tofile.

DA leader Retief Odendaal said they also had hundreds of political members moving to the DA and they were not concerned with the numbers emphasised by the UDM. “Its politics and we are nearing elections. On a monthly basis hundreds are walking over to the DA and that is not necessarily newsworthy. I would be very surprised if members walk over to the UDM because members are well aware that we will be taking over the met-

ent problem,” Phiyega said.

“We have seen many deaths as a result of gang violence and have used many interventions.”

She said high police visibility was one strategy and the National Prosecuting Authority had also played ball by ensuring stiff sentences were meted out.

Because gangsterism was a multidimensional problem, they urged members of the community to assist the police, she said.

“Our strength is in our unity.”

He said recent demands by allegedly drunk people to be treated before patients queueing for medical attention since the early morning, were the last straw in a number of incidents that showed a lack of understanding, respect and protocol from local residents.

“Members of the community complain of service delivery, but when they are being assisted they show unruly behaviour. It is wrong and cannot be accepted,” Nogampula said.

An executive member of the Treatment Action Campaign, Nogampula said they were opposed to such misdemeanours in the same way that they dreaded government officials who displayed laziness and an uncaring attitude by dragging their feet at work instead of giving people good service in the spirit of Batho Pele (People First).

He said a stakeholders’ forum which inclu-ded ward committee members, community development

workers, the Treatment Action Campaign and Amadodana Okwenene, among others, had been held last week to discuss problems bedevilling the local clinic.

Nogampula said the police and community police forum members had not been able to make it owing to other commitments.

He said a public meeting was held at the Jeff Masemola Community Hall in KwaNobuhle last Thursday to discuss issues relating to residents’ expectations of the public hospital.

“We discussed a number of issues, including educating our people about health problems. The role of

the X-ray and trauma units in the hospital were also be under the spotlight.

“The bottom line is that we want residents to appreciate the good that government is doing on one hand, and ensure that they get quality services for a better life on the other hand,” Nogampula said, adding that his structure had been created by, and was accountable to, Health MEC Phumza Dyantyi.

It was not politically aligned, he said, but played an oversight role and had a good rapport with councillors Thembisile Gana, Nomsa Manci, Monde Vaaltyn and Loyiso Stemele.

Retired nurses of Motherwell unite to heal community NCEBA DLADLA RETIRED nurses of Motherwell have come together to form a structure that would help them participate effectively in community development initiatives.

The launch of the Motherwell Retired Nurses Organisation (MORENO) at the Raymond Mhlaba Sports Centre in NU4 Motherwell, was the beginning of a new journey for the practitioners who were no longer on the Health Department payroll, but still much involved in health matters which affect local communities.

The launch was attended by MORENO members and their families, representatives from other retired nurses organisations, Democratic Nurses Organisations of South Africa (DENOSA) leadership, speakers from the Department of Social Development and invited guests.

The event was the culmination of a long

time of planning by the nurses.

MORENO Chairperson Nompumelelo Njezula introduced her executive committee and said that they decided to work together as retired nurses because, she explained, “to be retired, didn’t mean they were tired”.

“We plan to work together as we are aging in different ways but still have the passion for our work - of health promotion.

“We’ll look at ways in which we’ll support our communities’ needs while we’re providing care and support for one another physically and spiritually,” said Njezula.

She said they found out that there are other retired nurses organisations that they would be working with and sharing ideas.

Reverend Zwelitsha Lalendle summed it up reading from the book of Matthew 5:13 and said in the opening prayer that MORENO represented the light and salt of the world.

“As you are retired, you are rehired for your new roles,” he quipped.

Police Cultural Fest in Bay a resounding success NCEBA DLADLA THE 23rd Police Music and Cultural Association (Polmusca) Unity Festival held at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium and NMMU’s Missionvale campus from September 17 to 19 was a resounding success.

The prestige event, a huge exposition of diverse South African cultures that included choral music, bands, traditional and ballroom dance, cultural exhibitions and potjiekos was aimed at relieving stress among South Africa’s men and women in blue whose everyday job was associated with danger and even death, national Police Commissioner Riah Phiyega said.

In the choral competition, KwaZulu-Natal took first prize, followed by the SAPS

head office, while last year’s overall winners, the Eastern Cape, took third position.

Mpumalanga won the battle of the bands followed by the head office and the Northern Cape came third.

The Northern Cape came tops in the ballroom dance stakes, followed by KwaZuluNatal and Free State.

North West Province took the honours in the traditional dance category, with the Eastern Cape second and Northern Cape third.

In the potjiekos competition, the judges agreed nobody does it better than the Eastern Cape. The Western Cape came second followed by the Free State.

Hundreds of policemen and policewomen enjoyed their stay in Nelson Mandela Bay. For three days they mingled with the

powers that be, including Phiyega, and forgot about the hustle and bustle associated with their job of law enforcement.

And no serious crimes were reported around Nelson Mandela Bay, local police spokespersons Warrant Officer Dumile Gwavu and Constable Mncedi Mbombo said.

This proved true the assertion by Phiyega that “Polmusca is used to support crime prevention initiatives by calming down inflamed unrest within communities and also providing recreation and pleasure to our workforce.”

Both police labour unions, the South African Police Union and the Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union support Polmusca, saying the health and welfare of the men and women in blue is paramount.

Boardwalk this weekend as movie stars and journalists from all over the world converge for the prestige African Movie Academy Awards (AMAA) which is known as the African Oscars.

According to Michelle Campbell from Michelle Campbell publicity, over 40 international journalists are flying in to Nelson Mandela Bay this weekend to watch 184 nominees from Africa, Europe, South America and other parts of the world at the awards which take place at the Boardwalk International Conference Centre on Saturday evening.

AMAA is more than just about the awards, as it’s the biggest gathering of filmmakers across the African continent, and the rest of the world.

“Facebook, a media partner of the event, will be live streaming the evening to millions of Facebook users around the globe.

Thus far, media coverage for the AMAA has reached over 400 million people globally.

What’s more, AMAA has brought R10 million into the city having local businesses benefiting particularly well,” said Campbell.

In addition, Nelson Mandela Bay is set to play host for the next five years to the awards which celebrates the best in the continent’s film industry.

The academy awards has 53 countries participating annually, and sees between 500 and 700 international film stars from Africa, Europe and other continents attending the affair.

The 50 nominees across the 10 categories will attend, as well as the judges and invited guests from across the globe.

Primary schools in Phendula Literature Quiz NCEBA DLADLA THE recent concern expressed by the Minister of Basic Education Angie Motshekga over the fact that too many South African children cannot read could soon be answered.

In an effort to address this, the Phendula Literature Quiz, otherwise known as Lit Quiz, was held last Wednesday at the NU9 public library in Motherwell.

Five primary schools, Emafini, Zanoxolo, Fumis’ukoma, Sanctor and Swartkops, took

part in the quiz after reading the five books from which the questions came.

St George’s Prep librarian Rosemary Roth said this was a national quiz aimed at encouraging pupils to read.

It was started by Johannesburg librarian Marge Brown, who noted the problem of not enough reading being done in schools.

Brown organises sponsored books and sends them to the provinces involved, including the Eastern Cape.

“As a lover of reading myself, I encouraged some of the schools to take part, and as they say,

M’well youngsters in talent search NCEBA DLADLA UP and coming young artists from Motherwell will have an opportunity to showcase their talents during the Balo M Foundation Heritage Day Celebration at the NU2 Motherwell Community Hall today.

Activities will run from noon until 5pm.

Lubabalo Mseleni, head and founder of the foundation, said the event was his means of getting a number of gifted township youngsters under one roof in an event where they celebrated their heritage and diversity through arts by showcasing their music, dance, drama, poetry, rap and traditional food cooking talents.

He said there would also be food stalls with traditional African cuisine for sale.

The quizmaster, Grey Primary English teacher Grant Butler, took the children through their paces with a set of questions in four rounds.

“We are also raising funds for the Balo M Foundation, whose tasks are manifold.”

Mseleni said Balo M was eight years old and had a history of involvement in skills development initiatives targeting primary and high school pupils in Motherwell.

“We normally work with PE College and a number of primary and high schools here, but decided this year, for this inaugural Heritage Day celebration to involve just 10 schools that would prepare at least three items each in arts and culture.

“We normally guide participants towards a career direction, but this time around we are aware that some members of the youth are not necessarily academically inclined, so we are looking at other avenues that we can assist them channel their energies towards,” Mseleni said. Admission is R10.

He told the Grade 6 and 7 boys and girls representing their schools that winning or losing meant nothing.

The key thing they should be thinking about was that their schools, including qualified teachers, had selected them because they trusted them to do a good job of representing their schools.

“What is important was for you to enjoy reading and for that you are all winners,” he said.

Swartkops Primary took the first prize, Emafini was second and Sanctor third.

Wabamkela Educare toddlers treated to snake show CHANDRÉ MASOLING ABOUT 30 pupils of the Wabamkela Educare in Walmer Township visited the Treasure Island play centre this week where they had the opportunity to experience a snake show by Silvano Recchia, also known as the Snake Man. Recchia has been breeding with snakes for the past eighteen years.

“Snake breeding is my hobby and my love for snakes developed from a very young age,” said Recchia.

He, like most people, were also afraid

of snakes at first, but the more time he spent with snakes, the more he became at ease with the reptiles.

As the snake man took Shikana the albino Burmese python out, the little faces had mixed emotions. Some were curious, while others decided to avoid eye contact with the snake.

Juliet Watt, manager of Wabamkela, said that this outing meant a lot to the children.

“This outing allows them to see more than just the streets of the township, and it aims to educate the children around the nurturing of pets.”

Prospective NMB filmmakers to meet this Saturday EASTERN Cape Filmmakers Forum will hold a highly educational and informative Workshop at the UDDI Nelson Mandela Bay Science Centre this Saturday, September 26 from 9am to 6pm.

According to Eastern Cape Film Festival Director Nceba Mqolomba, the créme de la créme of South African filmmakers, including the legendary Ben Nomoyi, will be among the speakers on the day.

According to Mqolomba, Nomoyi will challenge prospective writers and filmmakers to work together in order to have an impact before taking the writers through their paces of penning a gripping synopsis.

KwaNobuhle’s Mqolomba mentioned that they were perturbed and wanted to dispel the myth that filmmaking was not a lucrative business that could create sustainable jobs.

Following the examples of the Western Cape and KwaZulu Natal which were enjoying the fruits of this realisation and getting government and big business support for the industry, he said, they were first arming their troupes before they engaged in a coup d’etat of the country’s business trends.

“We know for a fact that filmmaking is contributing R3 billion to the country’s GDP while creating over 25 000 jobs,” said Mqolo-mba.

Mqoloba will dissect the making of the documentary with people like Nopinkie Bantsile.

SABC News Anchor Thami Dickson will be delving into the topic of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Emerging Black Filmmakers Fund and on how to turn an idea into a story, before the screening of short films and documentaries aimed at helping the invitees put things into perspective.

Following the provincial film festival Eastern Cape Filmmakers held in August, they realised that the task of organising prospective filmmakers and other technicians involved in the business was a mammoth task that could not be dealt with in one day, said Mqolomba.

“We decided to meet once a month involving people in filmmaking and production in their different districts so that we have enough time to deal with specific areas in a satisfactory manner,” Mqolomba told Express Indaba.

Last month they visited Amahlathi District Municipality eCumakala, this month they were at Nelson Mandela Bay Metro and in October they will do the OR Tambo District and the Chris Hani District Municipalities before they take a Christmas break. They will resume in February in other regions.

The highlight on Saturday will be the screening of the Feature Film: Mandela: The Man and the Myth.

Five KwaNoxolo youths eager for World Karate Champs NCEBA DLADLA FIVE young karatekas from KwaNoxolo Township in Port Elizabeth will soon be jetting off to Russia to participate in the World United Karate Federation competition in November.

Fourth Dan Black Belt Sensei Joseph Thomas of KwaNoxolo Shotokan Karate Club said his students shone in Kata (Style) and Kumite (Fighting) at the National Competition in Kuils River in Cape Town recently. The team to represent South Africa in Russia was selected here.

“We picked five players from the club whom we thought would bring glory. And goodness me, all five won

the local, regional and national spots to the world championships in both Kata and Kumite. This makes me very proud,” said Thomas.

Sensei Thomas added that the outstanding performances from his mentees was a result of dedication to the sport and high discipline.

“We have a number of young people who have joined the sport and quickly learnt the basics. They are willing and hungry for success. It makes it so easy to train them,” said a proud Thomas who stated that all their transport and accommodation costs would be paid by the Karate Federation.

“This delights us more because coming from poor backgrounds in KwaNoxolo, where unemployment

is rife, we would struggle to raise enough funds to go overseas.

“The only thing we might need now is assistance to get tracksuits and maybe some pocket money for the boys,” Thomas pleaded.

Following their convincing win over Coselelani High School, Cingani High School Girls’ Team let down their supporters after Motherwell High School Girls’ Team embarrassed them 42-6.

Fans were kept on their toes when Coselelani High School Boys Team dug deep to overcome Cingani High School Boys’ Team 12-11.

Despite throwing everything into the game, Cingani High School Boys’ Team suffered a close 14-10

defeat to Motherwell High School Boys’ Team.

YTC uplifts the standard of girls’ rugby SELBY MADIKANE YOUNG Training Centre (YTC), which falls under EP Rugby, aims to uplift the skills level of girls’ rugby.

According to YTC Coach Mongezi Cwilana, the fundamental aim of their programme is to develop the game of rugby among girls from 14 years to 18 years old.

Cwilana said, “At YTC we aim to prepare these young girls to play at provincial and national level. So far we have three sub-unions which are Karoo, Midlands Sedru and Nelson Mandela Bay. “For starters each sub-union is required to have two teams, which are U/16 and U/18. Since the inception of this programme last year, I can see that there is a huge improvement in the skills levels of girls.”

Cwilana said that their U/16 teams participated in a tournament that was held in Oudts-hoorn in June 2015 while their U/18 teams played in the tournament that was held in Durban in 18 July 2015.

“Today (19 September 2015), we are starting a league which will be played until the end of November 2015,”

Cwilana said.

Supporters watched some league games which were played at NMMU Missionvale Campus on Saturday.

The game that stole the show was when Manchester United defeated SUBS 1-0 in the last minutes of the game. Manchester United striker Ayabonga Xufile who guided his side to semifinals, unleashed a thunderous shot that beat the SUBS goalie.

Tomorrow Stars plays against Wells United in the first semifinals and Manchester United take on Crystal Palace in the last semifinals at a venue and date that will be announced soon.

Ideas are MOFA Mayoral Cup winners SELBY MADIKANE SAFA NELSON Mandela Bay Regional League champions Young Ideas won the Motherwell Football Association (MOFA) Mayoral Cup when they beat Showvillage United Brothers 2-0 in the finals that were played at Motherwell NU 2 Stadium on Sunday.
