N illegal electrical connection claimed the life of a 3-year-old girl at the Powerline informal settlement in NU8 Motherwell last Wednesday.

Now the family of five, who depend on the gogo’s old-age pension payout and one child support grant, need assistance to bury the child.

The untimely death of little Solakha Futha by electrocution because of izinyoka (illegal electricity connectors) has exacerbated the problem that this community of shack-dwellers is facing.

“The sad part of this already worst case scenario, is that the grandmother of the child who died, does not even use stolen electricity. She makes fire with wood to cook and uses candles to light her shack,” Ward 57 Councillor Thembile Nkosiyaphantsi said.

Solakha’s mother, Nontobeko Futha, said, “My mother, Liziwe Futha, was hanging washing in the backyard when she noticed that the electric wires that crisscrossed our shack were loose and broken. While she was busy she felt she was being shocked.

“She (Liziwe) hated the illegal connections and left the backyard to use the line in front of the house. As she was talking about it, Solakha ran out in front of her to the line in front and fell on the ground. She was electrocuted,” a sobbing Nontobeko said, adding that the multiple electric wires were also exposed.

Solakha’s gogo started shouting frantically at the neighbours who were doing illegal connections, saying that they must come and see what they had done.

According to Nontobeko some of her neigh-

bours admitted that they knew her mother did not use electricity through illegal means, and had promised to take responsibility for helping the family bury the child.

Councillor Thembile Nkosiyaphantsi said, “Two ladies did come with the gogo and asked that we assist in the burial of the child. I said no! We can’t do that. If they admit that they were guilty, they must go further and find ways to assist the needy family.”

Nkosiyaphantsi added that he also advised that they collect money and ask for donations.

Through Nkosiyaphantsi’s assistance, the child was kept at the government mortuary while the family sought the means for burial.

Nontobeko said she was not sure whether the family would follow the councillor’s advice to seek donations from community members.

“Some were very drunk when they came for prayers last Friday. One even said we should not worry as though we had lost a breadwinner - it was just a child,” said Nontobeko, who was carrying her 7-month-old baby on her back. She told Express Indaba she had two older children who live with relatives in Port Alfred, while she and her two younger children stayed with her mother and two siblings.

According to the councillor, this was the second death of a child as a result of electric shock in this community of about 900 people who need electricity. Two more little children were seriously injured when they were electrocuted recently.

“These people pull electricity from the municipal pole which, owing to the heavy current, cannot handle it anymore. Some use electricity illegally from formal houses and they pay for it. This is a big problem facing this community. We tell them to stop it but they continue to do it nonetheless,” said Nkosiyaphantsi.

Man (39) arrested for murder of girlfriend

Five held for armed robbery, weapons charges

A 39 year-old man from Kwazakhele Township is expected to appear in court before the magistrate to face a charge of murdering his girl friend.

According to Port Elizabeth police spokesperson Constable Mncedi Mbombo, a 25 year-old woman was stabbed to death for the sum of two hundred and fifty rand.

This happened at Moutuma Street in an area called eBesuthwini in Kwazakhele about 3 pm yesterday (Tuesday) 2 November.

A murder case was opened for investigation at Kwazakhele Police Station. According to the police spokesperson, it is alleged that the deceased and her 39 year-old boyfriend had an argument over money and the boyfriend stabbed her on the chest and she died on the scene.

“After stabbing her, the boyfriend called an ambulance. It was unfortunately too late when an ambulance arrived at the scene. The woman was dead already,” said Const. Mbombo, adding that the suspect was arrested and was expected to appear in court soon for murder.

FIVE Port Elizabeth suspects, aged between 22 and 34, were arrested at a house in Twalingca Street, KwaNobuhle, last Wednesday.

After receiving information from members of the public, the police went to search the house at about 4am.

“Members seized 18 new cellphones worth R15 000, a .45 automatic Colt pistol with two rounds and a white Ford Fiesta. It was established that the vehicle was hijacked in New Brighton in September,” police spokesperson Warrant Officer

Elderly couple attacked in KwaNobuhle POLICE in KwaNobuhle have launched a manhunt for four unknown suspects who attacked an elderly couple in Tapayi Street, KwaNobuhle in the early hours of Friday, October 30.

It is alleged that the suspects gained entry to the house through a bedroom window at about 1:30am.

“One of the suspects pulled a knife and stabbed the 67 year-old female pensioner in the face and demanded cash,” said police spokesperson Warrant Officer Basil Seekoei.

W/O Seekoei added that the suspects took a flat screen television set and a Nissan Bakkie before fleeing from the scene.

It is believed the four men drove off with the vehicle and collided with a fence about 100 metres from the house in Mondile Street.

“Police recovered the vehicle and the television while the four were still at large,” said Seekoei.

KwaNobuhle Station Commander Colonel Solani Xawuka said the suspects can run but they could not hide.

“We will leave no stone unturned until we arrest these suspects. We seek community assistance to track them down,” he said.

Upon further investigation, police were led to a house in Voisin Road, Gelvandale, where they arrested a 22-yearold suspect and seized a shotgun with three rounds of ammunition and 11 rounds of 9mm ammunition.

Seekoei said the suspects had also been positively linked to a business robbery in KwaNobuhle about two weeks ago.

The suspects are expected to appear in the Uitenhage Magistrates’ Court shortly on charges of business robbery, possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition and possession of stolen property.

Body of unknown man found in Swartkops NCEBA DLADLA THE South African Police Service has opened an inquest docket after the body of an unknown man was found in Swartkops on Monday.

According to police spokesperson Constable Mncedi Mbombo, two men found the decomposed body of an unknown man in the bushes along Old Grahamstown Road in Swartkops at about 2pm on Monday and informed the police.

Said Constable Mbombo, “Since police found shoes, clothes and dishes next to the body, police think that the man was a bush dweller.”

“An inquest docket has been opened for investigation at the Swartkops Police Station,” said Constable Mncedi.

Masiki behind bars despite residents’ pleas of her innocence NCEBA DLADLA CLAIMS that Mandisa Masiki is not guilty of public violence - the charge she is currently in jail for - will be proved by the court of law, said police spokesperson Captain André Beetge.

This was in reaction to people from Wells Estate who stood outside court claiming to support Masiki, popularly known as Norabhase.

While the court was in progress, a handful of supporters gathered outside court singing freedom songs in support of Norabhase.

They did not allow photographs to be taken, alleging that they were being victimised for challenging “poor service delivery” by the ANC Ward 60 Councillor Nondikho Gana.

“We can give Express Indaba our story.

But we do not want our picture to be taken,

because we are the targets of police who are not even from Port Elizabeth. They don’t know who was involved in the public violence, now they arrest anybody. But, we know for sure that Norabhase was not there,” said one resident.

“We want her out or there’ll be hell to pay.

What they claim to be public violence is still nothing,” said another resident.

Capt Beetge said, “Of course, anyone is innocent until proven guilty by a court of law,” adding that a police investigation into the public violence that included the blockading of Jijana Street with huge stones and burnt tyres was directed at the suspect.

“According to police investigation the suspect was the ring leader. According to the reports at our disposal she was the instigator,” said Beetge, adding that the suspect was denied bail.

“She will be remanded in custody until her next appearance in court,” said Beetge.

‘ANC needs SANCO ahead of local government elections’ - Duba NCEBA DLADLA A CALL for unity in the Tripartite Alliance ahead of the 2016 Local Government Elections was highlighted during the Thobile Magqabi Memorial Lecture at Daku Hall, KwaZakhele last Thursday.

Over 500 South African National Civic Organisation (SANCO) members from the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality District gathered to listen to Provincial Secretary Tony Duba speaking about the legacy left by SANCO founding member Magqabi.

According to Duba, the unsung hero Magqabi was the founding member of Port Elizabeth Black Civic Organisation (PEBCO) who worked with Henry Fazzie but about whom very little was said.

Magqabi of New Brighton, elalin’ embomvu, Duba said, built a formidable SANCO that was to support ANC policies in government.

He added that Magqabi left SANCO alive and well when he died last year.

“But today, there are those who are trying to destroy the ruling alliance. The ANC needs SANCO as an Alliance partner ahead of the forthcoming local government elections,” Du-

ba said.

“Comrades, let us not fool ourselves, SANCO cannot go alone. Those who think that SANCO can contest local government elections against the ANC are making a huge mistake,” said Duba, adding that there was no way that the ANC and its alliance partners, SANCO and the South African Communist Party (SACP) could divorce.

According to Duba, a lot can be learnt from Magqabi, who was a disciplined, tried and tested cadre of the movement who played sport like boxing, rugby and dance sport.

“In Magqabi’s memory, the youth of today should not be found in the taverns.”

Member of Provincial Legislature (MPL) Duba and former Ward Councillor whose rise to power came from the ranks of SANCO local structures in Motherwell, said during Magqabi’s era, there were street and area committees that made sure that safety and security of residents was paramount.

He said people who were dissatisfied with service delivery and end up destroying property were doing a disservice to the nation and Magqabi would not support that.

“But he definitely would have supported the Fees Must Fall Campaign,” he added.

Waste management plan improves service levels REPORTER Residents of the metro may start noticing significant improvements to the waste management services of late, as a result of the Metro’s Integrated Waste Management Plan (IWMP) project being undertaken by GIBB, South Africa’s leading black-owned engineering firm.

According to Walter Fyvie, Environmental Scientist at GIBB, and Project Manager, completion is scheduled for late 2015. “The NMBM has prioritised waste management, and the four-year implementation process was initiated by the City in 2011,” Fyvie said.

Plans are currently being formulated for the Nkonkobe Local Eastern Cape Municipality, and the local municipalities of Mandeni and Nquthu in KZN.

Millions for NMMU’s new marine course REPORTER IN a major boost to the developing ocean economy in South Africa, merSETA is to provide R30 million over the next three years to Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University to, among other things, establish a Bachelor of Engineering Technology in Marine Engineering degree.

The NMMU recently signed a memorandum of understanding with merSETA, who will be providing R30 million to the university over three years to establish a new degree in marine engineering.

This is part of merSETA’s contribution to the strategic Operation Phakisa initiative of government, which focuses on the “blue” economy by unlocking the economic potential of the country’s oceans.

“Not only will this agreement allow for the generation of new qualifications in the developing sector of marine engineering, but it also allows for the development of TVET curricula, as well as creating progression for TVET learners to university in the marine sector,” said

merSETA CEO Dr Raymond Patel.

“The investment by merSETA demonstrates their confidence in NMMU and will enable the university to source top experts in the marine engineering field to teach, support and grow students in the maritime industry, increase research for naval architecture and ship engineering, as well as establish the NMMU as a world class maritime university,” said NMMU ViceChancellor Prof Derrick Swartz.

This agreement will also open up new job opportunities for participants.

The NMMU has completed the initial design of the academic programme for the new Marine Engineering degree and will now follow formal procedures for approval via the Department of Higher Education and Training.

The new course will include modules such as naval architecture and marine automation. It is envisaged the new degree will open in 2017.

Fireworks: be aware and be fair to pets

WITH Guy Fawkes and Diwali approaching, the National Council of SPCAs calls for restraint, responsibility and consideration from all quarters.

Diwali is the Festival of Light and its beauty is inherent. Loud bangs form no part of it. Guy Fawkes has no relevance in South Africa and it is questioned why it is “celebrated” at all.

It has become increasingly evident that reckless individuals are using both “events” to utilise fireworks in a particularly anti-social manner.

This includes ignoring any restrictions and causing damage to property, as well as terrifying communities and animals.

According to Christine Kuch from The National Council of SPCAs, “The SPCA does not enforce the laws relating to the use of fireworks. The regulations, both local and national, are watertight.

“The Explosives Act is enforced by the SAPS to whom matters of concern need to be reported. This Act covers sale of fireworks, as well as issues relating to the discharge of fireworks in public places. Local by-laws – which vary - regulate the discharge of fireworks on private property. “In some Municipalities, permits are required; in other areas there is dispensation for Diwali between specified

times.”

Be aware of pets’ sensitivity Anyone with an animal is requested to be responsible and to ensure the animal’s safety and comfort.

The hearing of animals is far more acute and sensitive than the hearing of a human. If a dog can hear a grasshopper eat, imagine what a firework sounds like.

Stay with your pets. Keep them indoors. If an animal is sensitive by nature, then consult your veterinarian for advice. Do not give medication intended for humans to animals and above all, ensure that animals are not in danger of harming themselves if they bolt – even indoors - or react when a firework is discharged in the area. Despite regulations and appeals for calm, this can occur.

Grey Junior band treats senior citizens to good music CHARDÉ MEYER THEY may be from different generations, but last week the boys from the Grey Junior School showed that they understood senior citizens and their definition of good music.

Led by their band director, Jeff Taylor, the school’s musicians hosted senior citizens from different old age homes and churches in Port Elizabeth. The school’s senior citizen day is an annual event that first took place in 2011, as part of the school’s outreach programme.

For an hour and a half, the boys entertain attendees with their instrumental renditions of classic ‘golden oldies’. On the day, the musical numbers provided an air of nostalgia that had many of the senior citizens on their feet.

According to Irene Burke, one of the ladies who attended the school’s senior citizen day, if she could have stayed for more musi-

cal numbers, she would.

“They are so talented and they played fantastically. It was such a memorable day”, said Burke, who was dressed to the nines. “Words cannot describe how much I enjoyed myself,” she concluded.

What made the difference to this concert, was the unique way in which each musical item was announced. Before the band started a new song, Taylor would launch into a story about what each item meant to the older folk.

The rendition of the 1961 soundtrack of Breakfast at Tiffany’s, “Moon River”, made the crowd especially teary, as it allowed for the reminiscing of years passed.

The crowd could not get enough of the four young boys who lent their voices to the item and was extremely impressed with the efforts made by Taylor.

Also in attendance was Leon Brainers, who commented on how young the music made him feel.

“Forget the fact that it was children playing this beautiful music, the music itself just takes you back.

These children will never know what they have done for us,” said Brainers, full of smiles.

World gold beckons Yonela

POWER-LIFTING twice his weight seems to be all in a day’s fun for Yonela Mbembe (16), who will be attempting to qualify to take part in next year’s World Bench Press Championship later in the month.

Yonela, a grade 10 pupil at the Newton Technical High School in Port Elizabeth, only took up power lifting earlier this year, when an injury prevented him from playing rugby for the remainder of the season.

He competed for the first time in April, when he took part only in the bench press discipline.

With a body weight of only 68kg at the time, Yonela benched a staggering 120kg.

He said he had immediately loved the sport and decided that he wanted to achieve his EP colours.

In order to do this, he had to do

three competitions at different levels.

The next competition was held on August 29 in George at the Agricultural Show Grounds against Western Province. Yonela did a bench press of 125kg, which placed him first in his sub-junior division of 74kg. He also broke the EP record with his bench press at this competition.

Then after only two months of training he took part in the Eastern Cape Bench Press Championship on October 24. He then managed to break his own EP record by 12.5kg, benching 137.5kg.

Yonela will be off to Johannesburg where he will compete in the SA Bench Press Championships on November 21 to qualify for the World Bench Press Championship that will be held in Potchefstroom next year.

“I want to qualify for the world

champs and then I want to get a gold medal,” a confident Yonela said.

He trains every Monday to Friday for an hour-and-a-half a day. “I think I enjoy the sport, because I seem to be quite good at it. It also provides a way in which I can set goals for myself and challenge myself.”

Yonela currently weighs 69kg and he will turn 17 just before the national championship later this month.

He says he does not follow a specific diet at this stage. “I am lucky, I basically eat what I want,” laughed Yonela.

He said his favourite subjects at school were business studies and technical engineering. He hopes to become a personal trainer after school.

“But first let me get that gold medal at the world champs, and then let’s see where that leads me.” – ANNA PAUW

Bay rugby players beat Guinness World record CARA-LEE SCHEUN IT took 27 hours, a broken arm, a back injury and many blisters to make the Bay the record holder for the longest rugby match ever played.

On Friday, 46 players from Siyakhula, Sports Revolution, Swallows and Motherwell played more than 20 regular matches consecutively at the Dan Qeqe Stadium in Zwide to beat the existing record for the longest match of 25 hours, 59 minutes and 47 seconds.

This record, according to the Guinness World Records, was set last year in August between the Boars and Barbarians at Bromsgrove Rugby Club in Worcestershire, England.

On Saturday afternoon, at about 2:17pm, the two teams Eezy Fana and Camagu, stumbled off the field after 27 hours, 2 minutes and 52 seconds of playing time.

“Their feet were full of blisters. Their jerseys full of sweat, dust and blood, but nothing prevented them from going through with the

challenge,” said Noxolo Nqwazi, executive director of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture in the Nelson Mandela Bay municipality.

But the record attempt, played in honour of former president Nelson Mandela’s 27 years in captivity, almost ended in disaster.

Panki Tyobelo, a Camagu player broke his arm at 2am on Saturday, players saw it as a valid excuse to throw in the towel.

“But I refused. We had already come so far.

So I walked back on to the field with my broken arm and said I would play until time was up.

“My team quickly followed me and then we played,” said Tyobelo.

Camagu prevailed with 725 points to Eezy Fana’s 688. Each team received R15 000 in prize money.

“The players did not do it for the money.

They did it out of love for the game, also to prove that sometimes champions are made, not born,” said Mazizi Msutu, president of the organizer, City of Champions.

The record is expected to be included in next year’s Guinness World Records.

After more than 24 hours of non­stop rugby Camagu’s Elvandré van Aard could still manage a dive to score his try.

Motherwell Academy emerge as winners over Cosmos SELBY MADIKANE MOTHERWELL Academy emerged as winners when they vanquished Young Cosmos 1-0 in their SAFA Nelson Mandela Bay SAB Regional League game at Motherwell NU 2 Stadium on Saturday.

The home side were the most threatening side but the visitors were fully equal to the task.

Cosmos goalkeeper Mokoena Ramotshwane stood his ground.

Cosmos winger Yamkela Mkele was immensely instrumental for his side but Academy defender Sipho Vuthuza marked tightly. The two sides went to the sharing a goalless draw.

In the second half the home lads brimmed with confidence. Academy left winger Xolisa

Njamela who had a good game was like a hot knife that penetrated butter.

Academy broke the deadlock when Cwangco Tofile scored the only goal of the game.

Soon afterwards, Njamela delivered a perfect pass to Sixolile Ndamse who failed to score in the open net but his efforts went over the goal.

Sophakama FC are ZWIFA ARS champions SELBY MADIKANE KWAZAKHELE-based side Sophakama claimed the ZWIFA Accurate Reworks Systems trophy when they defeated Swartkops United 1-0 in the finals at Zwide Stadium on Sunday.

Sophakama overcame Major 4-2 on penalties after a 1-1 fulltime score in their semi-finals while Swartkops United that are popularly known as Rivermen earned a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Zwide Pirates in their semi-finals. The final games lacked some spark as both sides did not want to make mistakes. Both sides shared a goalless first half.

In the second half Rivermen supporters rallied behind their side but it was in vain.

As the game approached full time Sophakama midfielder Yowanda Sintile scored

the only goal that guided their side to their first trophy since their inception.

In the playoffs section Major Chiefs thrashed Zwide Pirates 6-1. Sophakama received a floating trophy, R7000 and gold medals. United went home with R5000 and silver medals. The losers’ finals winners Chiefs, were presented with R4000 plus bronze medals with Pirates settling for R3000. The losing quarterfinalists Golden Aces, Real Crusaders, Zwide Celtics and Kuyasa United got R1000 each.

Accurate Reworks Systems Director Mcebisi Mdwayi revealed that his company would once again plough back into ZWIFA because the tournament had kept the youth off the streets.

ZWIFA General Secretary Phakamile Daca thanked Mdwayi for coming to their rescue during the time they were in dire need of financial assistance.

Head of Silindokuhle Boxing Promotions, Nkebe had a very successful major boxing tournament, a contest for the vacant South African Welterweight title fight between local boy Anelisa Gungqisa and Gauteng’s Shaun Ness at Nangoza Jebe Great Hall in New Brighton last week.

It was a long time since the metro municipality saw a fight of that magnitude staged here, and brought together by a local promoter.

Although Nawule’s male boxer Makhosonke Zwengu lost in his attempt to win the SA Lightheavyweight and Supermiddleweight championships and Lonwabo Roboshi failed to bring the SA strawweight title home, such attempts deserve an applause.

Ntante, whose boxer Siphosethu Ncisa-na has been approved by BSA to challenge for the SA Miniflyweight title that Roboshi lost against Luthando Mangcotywa in December, previously had Gungqisa, (Welterweight), Lungisa Jikani (Junior Welterweight) and Masixole Botile (Middleweight) challenging for the national titles.

Lion City digs deep to salvage a hard-fought draw with FCB SELBY MADIKANE IT WAS a crunch time when Lion City salvaged a hard-fought 2-2 draw with FC Buffalo in their ABC Motsepe clash that was played at Motherwell NU 2 Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The East London-based side took the game to City at the first whistle but the Motherwell side stayed focused despite the huge pressure.

City’s hard-working midfielder Thozamile Bojo Magwala played a vital role when City scored their first goal courtesy of Lukhanyo Sherriff Rasmeni in the first half.

Buffalo took just a couple of minutes to reply with a goal when Sherwin Smith came up with an equaliser.

NMMU Madibaz continued their dominance in local football when they drew 1-1 with their old rivals Callies in a PEFA Score Energy Premier League game to claim their second consecutive championship title on October 29.

Some of their achievements that they had won was when they were promoted to play in the SAFA Nelson Mandela Bay SAB Regional League during the promotions playoffs.

Their premier league reserve side put a seal on their win in their division long before the final match, topping the table by more than 10 league points. In addition, to their league title they also successfully defended their PEFA KO Cup crown this season.
