Mystery surrounds church shooting NCEBA DLADLA
I
T is still a mystery why a gunman entered the Arise and Shine Christian Church in New Brighton and shot a 51year-old woman in front of members of the congregation last Thursday.
The woman, whose name is being withheld for security reasons, was going home after the service at the church on the corner of Singaphi and Gunguluza Streets in New Brighton about 9.30pm when she was confronted by a man, who drew a firearm and tried to shoot her. “Apparently the gun jammed. She cried hysterically and ran back into the church. The man followed her inside the church and she fell to the floor,” said Reverend Zola Dowse of the church. “We were stunned and in deep shock as he stood on top of her, mercilessly firing two gun shots at her head,” said Rev. Dowse. “Everybody lay on the floor while I jumped
at the man, trying to grab his gun from behind, but he quickly ran away leaving her lying there for dead,” he said. Rev. Dowse rushed the woman to hospital, where she was said to be brain dead. Dowse said he was lost for words. He did not understand the cruelty of a man who would shoot a helpless woman in the church of God. “We need prayers, but I think my congregants need counselling to be able to overcome the shock and heartlessness they were exposed to,” he said. “We believe this was an attempt on her life. The man did not take anything from her or from church members,” said Rev. Dowse According to a reliable source, the woman had a small sewing business. Her husband had died about a year ago and after receiving his estate she had enlarged and beautified her residence in New Brighton. “She did not have children with her husband. He had children of his own, who did not stay with them,” the source said. “The police are investigating a case of attempted murder and are appealing to members of the public to come forward with information that could help to arrest the suspect,” police spokesperson Constable Mncedi Mbombo said. < The Arise and Shine Christian Church in New Brighton where a woman was shot in the head by a gunman. School staff cuts shock ALVENÉ APPOLLIS
With as many as 4 000 fewer teachers in front of the blackboard in Eastern Cape schools in 2016, the teaching prospects for the province seem bleak, according to experts and unions. Principals in Port Elizabeth received letters last week in which notice was given that they would have to cope with as many as nine teachers fewer at their schools. The Eastern Cape Department of Education (EDoE) cut teaching posts by 1049 from 55 796 to 54 747 in September. The EDoE pre-final list of how these positions will be used in schools next year, shows that only about 50 000 teachers will be placed in front of the blackboard. The other 4 747 positions are allegedly “saved” for possible needs that might emerge at schools. According to the EDoE, this decision does not form part of its job cuts, but simply because schools, according to principals’ information, are not in need of these posts. “These lists are not final,” said Mali Mtima, provincial spokesperson. “If principals are dissatisfied with the distribution they can discuss it with us.” Edmund van Vuuren, DA spokesperson on education, said the EDoE had overplayed its hand this time. “I am very concerned about the effect that this latest decision will have on the morale of our teachers. I can foresee that staff tearooms and principals’ offices will become battle grounds with teachers fighting to retain their jobs. I would recommend that principals write to the MEC to give reasons why their numbers should not be cut. We were hoping that the increase in the education

budget of R1-billion, from R20, 6 billion in 2015/16 to R21,6 billion in 2016/17 would have allowed for the appointment of more teachers,” he said. The learner-enrolment in the province increased from 1,8 million in 2014 to 1,89 million in 2015. Learner enrolment is expected to increase further in 2016. Trade unions are particularly concerned about the number of pupils that increase annually and what the increase will mean for teachers in the classroom. The distribution list is set according to the so-called Morkel model. The Department of Education collects schools’ information through the year, including the number of teachers, students and subjects. These figures decide how many teachers a school needs. “The model usually works very well,” said Jan Stroebel, principal of Framesby High School and chairman of the South African Teachers’ Union (SATU) in the Eastern Cape. “The problem is that the weighting of teachers, pupils and subjects this year was shared by fewer teachers. What will happen now is that schools’ teacher-to-pupil ratio will be higher - which will dish up its own problems.” Sindisile Zamisa, South African Democratic Teachers’ Union spokesperson, supports Stroebel’s concerns. “By reducing the number of posts, it is doubtful that we will have a teacher in every classroom,” he said. “It seems as if the education officials want our teachers to fail. Many schools are already battling with overcrowded classrooms. I don’t see how having fewer teachers at schools will help education in our cities.”
INTERNATIONALLY, Africa is known as “a continent of corruption and poverty”, but a woman from Port Elizabeth plans to replace this perspective with a message of hope. Nozibele Qamngana, communications manager of the Ubuntu Education Fund in Zwide, has been selected to debate African stereotypes at the Africa in Norway conference in Oslo later this month aimed at changing perspectives of countries in the south. Qamngana, who will be the only speaker from Africa, is already bursting to speak at the conference. “Such opportunities are always chances for us at Ubuntu to be an example of hope and to spread the idea that impossible is indeed a myth,” she said. “Our work is about impact rather than numbers, and we appreciate the chance to tell our country’s success stories.” “The whole continent is seen as corrupt and there are many jokes about children starving in Africa. It is a problem, but not throughout the whole continent. “We cannot compare countries in Africa that gained their independence three decades ago to those who have worked on their economies for hundreds of years.” She would rather focus on the continent’s positive stories. “People think our women are oppressed, but it has been noted that Rwanda has the highest number of female parliamentarians in the world, while all over the continent women sit in positions of high power. “We want to spread the message of ubuntu, because we can only change lives if we work together.” – ODETTE KEMP

KwaNobuhle police investigate murder, hijacking and house robbery cases NCEBA DLADLA A QUICK response by KwaNobuhle police on Sunday resulted in a murder suspect being nabbed only minutes after allegedly committing the crime. A man (41) was stabbed to death at a tavern at Kotane Street, KwaNobuhle around 2am. The reason for the attack was not known. Police spokesperson Sergeant Majola Nkohli said the man fell and died on the street outside the tavern. “Sterling work from police detectives fol-
lowed and in less than an hour, a 30 year-old suspect was arrested,” said Nkohli, adding that the man is due to appear soon in court to face a murder charge. In an unrelated incident, police are investigating a vehicle hijacking case after a man was robbed of a leased vehicle on Sunday, 8 November. According to police spokesperson Sergeant Majola Nkohli, a 32 year old man was driving a leased grey VW Polo TSI, with registration number HMW 469 EC, at 10th Avenue, KwaNobuhle when he decided to urinate outside the vehicle.
Two gunmen appeared and pointed a firearm at him and his friend who was in the car. “They forced the person in the car out and fled with the vehicle,” said Nkohli. No shots were fired and no-one was injured in the incident. Anyone with information about the incident is asked to inform the police and assist them in their investigation. People can call the Crime Stop number: 08600 10111 or the nearest police station. . Social worker treats police to surprise visit NCEBA DLADLA THE good working relationship between Dora Nginza Hospital’s principal medical social worker Pamela Rubushe and Kwazakhele police station officers was highlighted during a surprise visit by Rubushe to the station on Friday. She had treated the law enforcement officers with cakes and drinks, “just to thank them for their on-point assistance during our times of need,” she said. “The visit was aimed at thanking them for their support. The Kwazakhele police help us a lot in our investigation of cases of abandoned newborn babies as
well as those of absconding mothers after childbirth,” said Rubushe, whose work revolves around the health and safety of children from birth. Kwazakhele station commander Brigadier Ernie Neveling accepted the good gesture on behalf of the station and spoke words of appreciation for the recognition of the importance of good working relations between different government departments and members of civil society. “Rubushe will phone any time of the day and expect that we run to solve the case. All of us know her. She even knows our private numbers,” joked Constable Nondumiso Pohleli-Ntombana, who is Rubushe’s first point of call at
the station. She said she had accompanied the social worker in dealing with cases of children who had been burnt, abandoned or abused. “We work together so well and don’t stop until we have brought a case to a close. This is what Rubushe appreciates, and of course, it is what we have do as police,” a proud Pohleli-Ntombana said. New early childhood development centre for M’well NCEBA DLADLA THERE is an adage in Xhosa that says, “Bagotywa bebatsha”, meaning teach young children while they are still very young (and teachable). That has been the motive behind the establishment of the Thamsanqa Tinker Tots Early Childhood Development Centre at 90 Mgwanqa Street, NU6 Swartkops Valley, in Motherwell. There is also the reality that this Motherwell community needed a centre of this nature to be provided by the Family Restoration Services to offer quality education to the future leaders of South Africa. Social work services director Tia Wessels
said this was something that this community had needed for many years after finding joy in the playground they initially had. And, thanks to two young Dutch girls, Fleur van der Ven and Eva Lieve Loonen, who came to volunteer at Thamsanqa Tinker Tots Playgroup, that dream had been fulfilled. The girls had seen the need for the facility and had gone back to the Netherlands and inspired their school, Maasland College, to raise funds for this project. “These two girls, their school Maasland College, including the principal, and other Dutch friends raised a large amount of money,” Wessels said. Another sponsor had added 50% more so that the house could be bought and renovations started, with furnishings and equip-
ment put in, also with the help of The Acorn Foundation and other sponsors. According to Caitlin Jones of Early Inspiration, several decades of research clearly demonstrated that high-quality, development-ally appropriate early childhood development programmes produced short- and long-term positive effects on children’s cognitive and social development. Teachers Athenkosi Goqo and Babalwa Pasiya urged parents to bring their children to the school. “We are happy for the opportunity that is created by this school. We want to thank Pastor Louise Fourie of Frontline Ministry also for the training we received,” Goqo said. “We’ll be stimulating the minds of young children,” Pasiya said.

Soulman forms record label to benefit upcoming musicians NCEBA DLADLA AFRO-POP musician Soulman Zutai is back with a bang, this time around with a recording company. Motherwell, Port Elizabeth’s Vukile Cophani who was popularly known by his stage name Soulman Zutai, made his name with songs like “Burning Love” and “Motherwell” in the 1980s and early 1990s, Now he has a dream of developing young musicians to stardom. A number of Nelson Mandela Bay musicians shone artistically in other provinces like Gauteng. Mercy Pakela, Sizwe Zako and the Bala brothers, Zwai, Loyiso and Phelo are some of the
names that quickly come to mind. And, listening to Zutai’s story, one can see the reason. But, he is adamant to overhaul what he regards as an unfortunate state of affairs. Born and bred in Port Elizabeth, Zutai sang in school choirs and played guitar. He learnt the art of song-writing and sent those songs to Gauteng with the hope of finding recording deals. “I sent my songs like ‘Love is Forever’ penned for my wife Nomzamo (his childhood sweetheart) and would hear nothing from Joburg. I went there myself in 1980,” he said. He slept at Park Station for days before he made contact with musician Babsy Mlangeni and his partner Koloi
Lebona, who were the first black people owning a recording company in South Africa. “They took me under their wing but sadly three years later the company was disbanded, and with no work and no place to stay I was forced to come back home,” he remembered. Zutai and Nomzamo went back to Johannesburg three years later and was signed by Hat-Trick Music which managed the famous PJ Powers aka Thandeka. “Here, I did an album ‘Motherwell’ dedicated to my township. Three songs in the album were hits, ‘Motherwell’, ‘Burning Love’ and ‘Midnight Express’. They were high on rotation, thanks to the astute management of
Pastor Ndzi launches new gospel album NCEBA DLADLA KWANOBUHLE’s sensational gospel singer, Ndzimeni Menti, has a new album. Popularly known as Pastor Ndzi, Menti’s latest traditional offering, a 14-track album entitled Divine Worship, is an inspirational one about worshipping the Divine Saviour. The album has new compositions and traditionally arranged worship songs. Its mellow sounds show the artist’s growth musically and spiri-
tually. It was recorded at Scowen Studios in Johannesburg and co-produced by Ndzi and Owen Ngwenya through the Ndzi Gospel Music Ministry. The work also credits Pastor Langa Dube and Sange, Ndzi’s wife, and Walmer Township’s Nosipho Yali on backing vocals. “This album is about worshipping God. It seeks to make God the centre of our worship right through the year, and not only seasonally,” said Ndzi, who is the son of the Rev-

erend Menti of the Izenzo Zabapostile Church in KwaNobu-hle. “God has given me time to work in the studio with this extraordinary producer (Ngwenya) to come up with this album which touched a lot of people who have already heard it,” Ndzi said. “Like my first two albums, this album has a theme which runs through to give a message of hope to gospel music lovers and people in general.” Ndzi said indumiso (praise) should not change, should not de-

company boss Jennie Ward. But this company seized operations as well and this is where Zutai was lost to music. He complained that he hears music of yesteryear on radio but nothing of his own creativity. “Some recording companies did approach me and asked that we work together but I did not agree. I became sceptical of their motives and decided rather to start my own recording label, Bay Recording Company.” With assistance from government and big business, Zutai and Nomzamo’s Public Company, a registered Cooperative, is going to change the landscape of Eastern Cape Music. “There is so much talent in Nelson Mandela Bay,” he said.

WB Tshume Primary School rewards excellence NCEBA DLADLA THE WB Tshume Primary School in Kwazakhele rewarded pupils excelling both academically and in extramural activities last Thursday. Principal Buyile Sali said that their main objective was to develop their pupils in totality. Sali said the school wanted to be known as one of academic excellence with a proud history of producing rugby, soccer and netball players who could take their rightful place in the national teams. “This is the big day for both the pupils and the parents after hard work during the year,” teacher Ri-
ta Badi said. She said they awarded certificates and trophies to pupils who obtained 70% and above from the first quarter right through to September. “We also have top achievers in each grade,” she said. These were pupils who came top in all the learning areas in their grade. Proud English teacher Linda Mlonzi introduced and awarded her team of English speakers who excelled in poetry and debating, while Zoleka Zinto showed off with her team of u/9 netball players who were champions of the Nelson Mandela Bay African Bank-sponsored tournament. The school’s march and drill squad under the tutelage of the
Kwazakhele police station, came second in the district competition. The winners of this competition represented the metro in a national competition in Cape Town. Major Maryke Pretorius and warrant officers Janet Viljoen and Marvin Scholtz were there to congratulate them on a job well done. “We are very happy,” school governing body member Ntombekhaya Hoza said. “This day means a lot to us. It encourages our children to work very hard from the start of the year to the finish. “Even those pupils who are not rewarded today will be encouraged to pull up their socks in order to receive something next time.”

Big boost for welding as subject at technical high schools REPORTER THE re-introduction of welding as a subject from next year has received a major boost with funding, equipment and training from Afrox, merSETA and NMMU at four technical high schools in Nelson Mandela Bay. NMMU, Afrox and merSETA agreed to jointly improve welding at the four technical high schools in the Nelson Mandela metropolitan area. The primary objective of this project is to assist the Eastern
Cape’s Department of Education, NMMU and the merSETA to re-capitalise current technical schools in support of the re-introduction of welding as a subject from next year. The programme was launched at Westview Special School recently and the occasion was attended by various dignitaries from Afrox, NMMU, merSETA and the four schools. The schools that benefit from the agreement are Westview, Kwezi Lomzo Comprehensive, Gelvandale and McCarthy Street Secondary in Uitenhage.
Approximately R1,2-million was made available by Afrox Pty Ltd for the four schools, which included the supply of Afrox welding equipment and products. The welding equipment included Mig and MMA welding machines, gas welders and PortaPaks. In addition to the supply of hardware, the merSETA chair in engineering development at NMMU provided funding for accredited Afrox training for two teachers per school as well as a department representative. “Welding is a specialised field under the subject of mechanical
technology in technical high schools and re-capitalising them will go a long way in preparing pupils for careers in welding,”said Christo Basson, merSETA senior manager ETQA and partnerships. Each of the schools was assisted by the merSETA, Afrox and NMMU to ensure that their laboratory facilities were adequately prepared in order to meet industry safety requirements. Appropriate storage facilities, fume extraction, power supplies, welding bays and eye protection amenities were fitted at the schools that required them. “Safety is an important aspect of
welding and all teachers must attend the Afrox safety training before using the equipment. “Pupil training will be provided by educators who have been trained and certified as trainers,” said Johan Pieterse, business manager, Manufacturing Industries MPG. “Education in engineering is an expensive excercise, but this collaboration has provided the four schools with equipment that can yield skills to prepare pupils for tertiary studies,” said Karl du Preez, merSETA chair in engineering development at NMMU.

Willionair to launch debut album in KwaMagxaki NCEBA DLADLA ZIMBABWEAN William Magwiroto, popularly known as Willionair, has released a nine-track debut album titled Finger Print. This is a combination of R&B, gospel, hip hop and house, probably because he is still finding his sound as a musician, he explained. The 28-year-old Magwiroto of Sydenham in Port Elizabeth, who was born in Harare, is a self-confessed God-fearing man. He says his music, offered in English and little bit of native Shona, is inspired by the hardships he experienced growing up in the land of his birth and by his Christian faith. Being the last-born of eight children he never knew his father, who died before his birth. Magwiroto stopped telling people about his life experiences when he decided to write them in songs. A storyteller by birth, he is inspired by his hardworking single mother, Alice. He said he had found peace the day he wrote down his thoughts. He realised, he said, that a lot of people listened better and danced to his stories in songs in stead of feeling sorry for him. “Willionair is a combination of money and being on air,” he said, but was, however, quick to explain that he did not do music for the money. “I love music. This has always been the case growing up in Zimbabwe. I was in the primary school choir and also sang in the church choir,” said Willionair, who is married to Memory, also from Zimbabwe. Those who want to support Willionair have a chance to do so during his CD launch at the KwaMagxaki Hall on Friday, November 20. There will be more artists, like Azz Veritazz, Em Lloyd, King Meezi and Platinum Gee, to complete the lineup. The show starts at 6pm and admission is R30.

Madibaz looking to put up a fight in 2016 REPORTER THE FNB NMMU Madibaz are looking to put the tough 2015 season behind them as they start preparations for next year’s Varsity Cup rugby tournament. The squad came together early last month and have spent most of their time on fitness and conditioning in preparation for the challenges ahead. “The student athletes are heading into exams now, so we expect them to be focused on academics,” said Madibaz head coach David Maidza. “But they were looking sharp during preseason training and we have some programmes set up to get them ready for the coming season after they are done with the books.” Maidza admitted that his team was coming off a challenging season, having won only one of their seven games, especially after reaching the semi-finals in 2014. “After the 2014 season a lot of the senior
players left, leaving a vacuum that we struggled to fill earlier this year. We spent the year plugging most of the holes left after that.” But Maidza believes the structures in place through the Madibaz and the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University’s partnership with Eastern Province Rugby, and the Southern Kings franchise returning to Super Rugby this coming year, will play a big role in turning the university team’s fortunes around. “Through the Kings Academy and success the junior EP teams and FNB Madibaz Young Guns have enjoyed this year I truly think things are looking good for the Madibaz. We have a lot of young student athletes coming through the ranks, laying a good foundation for us to build on.” From a leadership point of view Maidza said he was spoilt for choice, with a lot of players putting their hands up as possible captains to lead the team. Scrumhalf Ivan Ludick was selected as team captain, with loose forward CJ Velleman taking on the vice-captaincy. “Ivan has been in the system for a while and has grown superbly as a player and a leader.
I am positive that he will bring a lot of calmness, control and guidance to the side. CJ is also a natural leader, having proven his qualities in this year’s campaign, and the two will work well together.” The coach is excited about combining some “young leaders” like Jeremy Ward, Junior Pokomela and Riaan Esterhuizen, among others, with old hands such as Andile Jho and Yamkela Ngam, to form a squad that will excite the “NMMU faithful” in the 2016 season, and for some years to come. Maidza said they would be aiming at least at a semi-final spot heading into next year’s tournament knowing that anything could happen in the playoff matches. “A very important point for us at this stage is to retain the talent we have. Our junior teams are doing very well, and with the Kings returning to Super Rugby I believe we have a better chance of keeping our players and not losing them to other franchises. “We have our own identity in top-tier rugby now, and it is time that we embrace and build on that identity,” said Maidza.
Loose forward CJ Velleman will step in as vicecaptain and play a crucial leadership role as the Madibaz head into their 2016 Varsity Cup campaign. PHOTO: SASPA

Movers lose to Cosmos at home SELBY MADIKANE IKAMVA Movers lost 3-2 to Young Cosmos during their home game in the SAFA Nelson Mandela Bay SAB Regional League at Motherwell NU 2 Stadium on Sunday. The Walmer lads exerted immense pressure on their hosts. Cosmos wingers Lehlolonolo Mokoena and Yamkela Mkele were a thorn in the flesh but Thabo Moremi did a superb job to stop them. In the 43th minute Anele Ace Madikane was rewarded with a goal when he rose high to head the opening goal. Movers came out strongly in search of an equalizer but their efforts were quite well contained by Cosmos goalkeeper Siphosethu Saliso. In the 55th minute Movers’ Anele Baxa was red-carded following a dangerous tackle to Mkele. Cosmos kept their counterparts at bay in search of the second goal. Mokoena banged in a beautiful goal after he received a perfect pass from Madikane to make the scoreline 2-0 in the 67th minute. Cosmos midfielder Simphiwe Yona un-

In the 75th Movers scored a goal courtesy of Moremi who unleashed a cracker into the wide corner of the goals with Cosmos goalkeeper Saliso well beaten. Following good play by Yako, Monwabisi Mamani scored Movers’ last goal in the 80th minute.
It was not a walk in the park because Hotspurs were well prepared for the big showdown. The game was enthralling with both sides failing to convert their clear-cut chances. The goalkeepers stood their ground as they pulled brilliant saves. The first half score was goalless with neither side being able to break the deadlock. In the second half United were fired up and they pressed hard. The long awaited opening goal was eventually scored by Masixole Mabaso in the 75th minute. Hotspurs also did not want to disappoint their loyal supporters as they threw everything into the game but United’s defence came prepared for the big game. I got my first born at 14 yrs and got married twice with no kids, so I had to give up both marriages. I spent 21 yrs looking for another child, desperate to fall pregnant again but all was in vain. I got involved with several men but it was persistent, then I decided to quit everything and go back to my mother’s place to look after my only son. I opened up a hair salon which didn’t succeed and my mom always tried to help me with this misfortune. I visited many doctors both medical and traditional, but there was no sign - a lot of money was wasted and I nearly lost hope till I met Healer Diba. He promised to make ends meet for me, he actually killed 3 birds with one stone. I am 40 years now, married again with twins and definitely booming tarven business! Life is precious now and still escalating - thank you great healer!!
